Made all the more dire by one fact - my 13 year old sister is at that school.

I'm glad no-one's injured, but Christ, this is my neighbourhood.

Glad it was defused before any injuries occurred.

People in my neck of the woods weren't so lucky last week.

For the record, if anyone does take this topic to, say, a discussion about guns and gun control, I'll be handing out suspensions and bannings.

Good to see that this threat was stopped before anything signicant actually occured.

I hear there are guns. And they are occasionally controlled. Shocker. News at 10.

So am I the only person wondering whether this was an actual threat (i.e. the individual in question was willing to commit the acts he said he would) or more a reaction to what happened in Cumbria?

Well, it's only natural the police will be edgy after a gun rampage to act on tip offs for others.

But really, as much as it's easy to get cynical about false alarms and stuff, it can be hard to sometimes let that drop and realise it's a great thing that it didn't happen, for whatever reason.

Going after threats is actually the best way to deal with potential shooting rampages- unlike all the metal detectors, ID cards, and other assorted bullshit they put in to inconvenience students, Columbine could have been averted if they'd done anything about the boys talking about killing their classmates.

Ah, logic. So wonderful, so neglected.

Most people would rather not make any decision at all if they can fob it off on a bureaucracy.

Hell, when I was going to school, if I'd known that merely *talking" about it, or even writing a list of names on apiece of paper, was all that was needed to get thrown out of school, I'd have been leaving lists in every school in the L.A. area.

The problem here is: No one listens to the kids who do this sort of thing in the first place; who's going to notice when they *stop* talking? Hell, they'll likely celebrate -- "Finally that little pussy-faggot's shut up -- now we can harass him with impunity".

But then, history is filled-to-overflowing with demonstrations of Humanity's Inability To Recognize A Threat Until It Swims Up And Bites Them On The Ass....

The Columbine kids were actually bullies, not the bullied.

Tons of myths have surrounded that case for years. It's completely fucked up any arguments about security or gun control you can make about it.

Um -- no. They were neither; they were, OTOH, severely fucked in their heads.
