Let me guess, Ill-lit and a decor that is clearly from a different era?

That's how I'd create a feeling of heaviness and unbelongingness.
Then I'd say ghosts did it.
Also, thick carpets, where there are any floors that are not just dark varnished wood.
And a human corpse in the corner.
And translucent apparitions moaning their impatience to get on with purgatory.
That's how I'd achieve that.
