"Officer, why did you pull me over?" "You were clearly preparing to perform the Stackpole Manuever at high speed, sir. Please step out of the vehicle and put your hands where the closest elements of the 157th Light Infantry Emergency Highway Support Team can see them." TO EXPLAIN ZHE JOKE UNDT THUS MAKE IT POINTLESS: Mike Stackpole wrote a Battletech novel in which one of his main characters detonates a 'Mech's fusion pile to trigger a landslide and thus wipe out an elite unit of invading forces. After publication, someone remembered that the game's fusion engines don't work like that. In the next edition of the game, the "Stackpole Manuever" was introduced to cover the screwup by redefining how the physics worked and allowing fusion plant detonations. Suddenly every screwball player about to lose his 'Mech started blowing it in place, resulting in the fannish equivalent of a galaxywide thermonuclear F*** YOU. |

God, do *NOT* remind me. 100-ton 'Mech, 400-rate engine, jump jets, max armor, no weapons -- 100-ton Fusion Suicide Bomb. Rule #1 Of Gaming: Under *ABSOLUTELY NO CIRCUMSTANCES* are Players to *EVER* be allowed access to Nuclear Weapons. Rule #2: Or anything which can be used to *simulate* Nuclear Weapons. :) |

If that actually happened in the setting, you'd think mechs would probably start getting banned. |

In the actual game setting, a bunch of religious nuts got ahold of a buttload of WMDs, built a fleet of insanely expensive and impossible-to-hide WarShips without anyone noticing, and nuked everyone into a new "Dark Age". Yeah...seems at some point the developers got together, drank a lot of Kool-Aid, built a giant mechanical shark, placed it in a vat of used motor oil, and jumped it with an assault 'Mech riding a rebuilt Challenger Shuttle. |

You could try it on Ubuntu with Wine. Granted it seems rather roundabout way to run a Windows game, but it seems to run well by various accounts: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?...rsion&iId=10515 |

Not so much "impossible to hide" as "unlikely to be hidden" -- the designers were using the "Space is big -- really, really big" trope. The problem being: Despite the fact that *NO ONE* liked the "Dark Age" setting (between the People Who Hate Collectible Games, and the People Who Hate WizKids, and the People Who Hate "Tinfoil-Hat" Game Backgrounds, and...), the people in charge decided they absolutely could not let it go to waste; so had to find some way of ramming the end of Proper _BattleTech_ History onto the beginning of ClickyTech History. Enter the Jihad -- just in time for the War On Islam^H^H^H^H^HTerror. I haven't seen shitty timing like this since FASA released _Crimson Skies_ -- a game about the Breakup Of The USA just before the most-contentious election since Hayes Vs. Tilden (look it up); *and* a game about Aerial Piracy just before The Great Lawn-Darting Of 2001. Idiots. |
