Basic jist is that the researchers are trying to recreate the same process that creates oil in the first place to offset the constant drilling, as well as finding what could be considered the first renewable fossil fuel (probably a misnomer, but whatever, it's a catchy name). Of course, the shadows of expense and time are looming. Thoughts?

I'll take the fusion if it means I can get jetpacks.

Or even just powered armour.

I counter with this. Do you really want to put the people on this forum within easy access of those devices?

No, but I wouldn't want some of you near sharp objects.

I do, however, still want my jetpack or my powered armour. Not both in one, of course. One or the other is fine.

The future certainly isn't living up to the expectations that Star Trek set for us all.

Indeed, at our rate, the borg don't even need to keep sending Borg cubes to go back in time as we destroyed ourselves already.

Oh yeah, speaking of nuclear fusion, I remember reading in the Philadlephia Inquirer that one of our weapons labs in California is running their first in a long series of test about fusion. The plan is to shot hundreds of high powered lasers at...I think it was hydrogen, but I'm probably wrong. Still, shooting things with lasers in order to get big boom.

That does qualify as some kind of awesome, right?

Which is why _Babylon 5_ includes the line: "The Future -- some assembly required".

_Babylon 5_: 1.
_Star Trek_: 0.

So you're saying that humanity will one day be beaten to the very reachs of our planet, costing millions of lives, then have a civil war, then get caught into a galactic war against an old enemy.

Yes, Babylon 5's future is much rosier than Star Trek.

Very probably. Hell, probably multiple times. :)

Too right.

As far as the oil goes, the best argument I've heard for NOT switching over to electric cars is simply that gasoline's got 80 times the energy that even the best batteries can hold in the same volume. We've come many strides along the road, but we need a couple quantum leaps here. -:P

EDIT: Obviously, we need to get back to the basics of nuclear motorization...

Not enough material to make a proper nuclear device.

However, covering most of downtown in Radioactive Debris would have a similar effect.

I'll stick with Gasoline, thanks.

Hey man, according to SimCity, we should start beaming microwave energy from space to earth in a couple years.

... and if MY SimCities are any indication, doing so will frequently fry the nearby landscape...

Annoyed that SC4 doesn't run well if you're on Windows 7 regardless of your system as it will still stutter.
