Its been a long time but I am going to paraphrase something from my college's Ethics class.

Discussions are open minded and get things done and have no real winner or loser.

Debates have winners and losers... but are essentially useless.

I always kind of liked that, but on forums you will always get debates it seems where no one cares about adjusting any of their opinions one way or the other and only care about shooting down any opposition.

Lets see if I remember any more of that... class..

Rules of a useless debate:

Take as much time as possible when speaking, more you talk the less they get to say.

Use witty salogans or catch phrases and use them often. Even if they are based on logical fallacy

Never back down from your point.

Instantly try to shoot down any arguement against it. Or try to downplay it when you can't

Attempt to discredit the other speaker.

and I can't remember the rest... I wonder if I still have that book...

Which is why they're never discussions, they're political cock-waving, and why I can't fucking stand having them on the forum.

Yeah -- the next guy'll get one for "Not Being Barack Obama".... >:)

What, Palin?

Don't joke about that.

She's too busy fighting demons with her hair and guns on her shoes.

...oh wait.

To be fair as much as I like Obama...it does seem he is getting the award because he isn't Bush. I mean he hasn't exactly proven to be Martin Luther King. That being said they also gave it to Henry frickin' Kissinger.

And Yassir frickin' Arafat.

Okay, fine. To some degree, I understand why he got it. Shifting the world's most powerful nation from rhetoric of aggression and bellicosity to a renewed commitment of diplomacy and multinational cooperation is not a small thing towards peace.

Still, I agree with the man himself when he says he does not, at this time, deserve to be placed alongside past winners.

Obama: "I really don't deserve this. I'm incredibly humbled."
US Conservatives: "MY GOD, WHAT AN ARROGANT ASSHOLE."

I'm really done now. These political threads do all harm and no good.

Actually I have nothing against Obama over this thing, just against the people who decided that he should have gotten the award.

But people can't fathom the concept of blaming people they don't know the names of.

Not just Americans either.

Hm, it seems that even a majority of the Nobel Committee didn't want to give the prize to Obama.

Also, as for how effing ridiculous it is... seriously, they gave it to him to his good intentions for something which he hadn't accomplished yet. To put it another way: I intend to finish writing my original story "Astyanax," which isn't finished yet (far from it, truth be told). Do I deserve the Nobel Prize for Literature anyway?

Hm, maybe there's method in their madness...

"Here's a Nobel Peace Prize. Now you'd better damn live up to it."
