Well, back to school and all those books... still, did anyone have any pleasure reading this summer?

Not really. Though, a new friend moved over here to Hamilton from Brampton. She's into this little book series called the Mortal Instruments, and she recommends I give 'em a read. Anyone read any of these books, can you tell me what they're like?

Well, I finally read through Frank Herbert's Dune for the first time, and wow, it's a good'un! I've also checked out George R. R. Martin's Fevre Dream, which has to be one of the best Vampire novels I've ever read, and right now I'm going through Steig Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - pretty good so far. I would have read more but a big chunk of my time has gone into goin through my massive collection of unwatched DVDs...

So, this summer, I read or finally finished reading...

Star Wars: Allegiance by Timothy Zahn
The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr.
"Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Complete Poems of Catullus
Common Sense by Thomas Paine
The Torah (yes, all 5 books of Moses)

There may have been a couple of others, but I never wrote the list down.

@ Ed Sigma:
Dune by Frank Herbert - Yes, I'm also thinking of trying to read that soon.
Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin - Hm, I never heard of that book or that author before...
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson - Saw that one at Borders...

@ SoniCalvin:
Sorry, never heard of Mortal Instruments either, to the best of my memory.

I did actually get round to finishing Star Trek Destiny Book 1 since I was a fan of the ST Titan series and apparently the newest novel in the Titan series was set after this Destiny trilogy so I figured I'd check it out.

Now I need to remember to get book 2 and 3 of Destiny. Also started rereading Mass Effect Ascension.

Lobster Johnson – The Satan Factory, a pretty dire piece of licensed pulp.
Bad Science, a scathing, amusing and brilliant attack on the terrible state of medical and scientific journalism, and the numerous realms of quackery.
The Areas of My Expertise, the entirety of human knowledge. It's suprisingly short.
Screen Burn, Charlie Brooker's early graniuad columns.
Reiksguard, above average Warhammer Fantasy novel, let down by a weak final third.
Thank You, Jeeves, one of the earlier Bertie Wooster books, and a cheerful jaunt in a simpler age. A fun read, a rarity.
Wrath of the Lemming Men, the third Space Captain Smith novel, having the same wide humour and solid plot of the earlier novels, whilst still having the obsession with pop-culture gags that sometimes just gets tiresome.
Churchill’s Wizards, a great primer for expansion into more specialist areas of deception in the World Wars.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which added kung-fu and zombies into an otherwise dry period piece.
Fallen Angels, a recent and sadly by-the-numbers Horus Heresy novel.

If it counts, I recently read the first two volumes of Atomic Robo.

Whilst it seems all good fun, the narrative seems a bit too scattered to understand in one read-through.

Bearing in mind I was tired. And in a moving vehicle.

Clearing the backlog I build up every term at uni, so a bit of a mix.

Wilt, Riotous Assembly and Indecent Exposure - Tom Sharpe
Last Exit to Brooklyn - Hubert Selby Jr.
The Prince - Machiavelli

Read Bad Science too, I've always liked Ben Goldacre's column, and the book holds up just as well.

Oh, and about 8 months of RSC periodicals, comes with the territory...

Likewise. After realising I have no taste it gets hard to pick something that looks good.

How do you define "pleasure reading"? Hell, right now I'm reading _Army of the
Cumberland_ by Thomas B. Van Horne_ -- first published in *1875*.

Prior to that, I read the Peter Cozzens trilogy on the three major battles in
Tennessee during the American Civil War: _No Better Place to Die_ (Stones River);
_This Terrible Sound_ (Chickamauga); _The Shipwreck of Their Hopes_ (Lookout
Mtn. and Missionary Ridge).

Before that was David Drake's Daniel Leary novel _When the Tide Rises_.

Before that was a two-volume set on WW2 German jet-aircraft designs.

Before that, _Causes Won, Lost, and Forgotten_, dealing with how the American
Civil War is depicted in Whollyweird. ("FUBAR" does not begin to describe it.)

There's more, but I think you're getting a sense of where this is going. :)

I read Heavier than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime. They were both pretty good. The second one may sound kinda stupid, but it was actually a very entertaining book. I highly recommend both.

Oops, kinda vague there huh? =P I meant that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime might sound kinda stupid, but it was still a good read.

Yeah, I've been recommended that one since apparently it's a great insight into the mind of someone with Aspergers, but I guess since I already have Aspergers I didn't see the appeal. It just reminds me of how dumb and awkward I was as a kid. (as opposed to just awkward now)

Kind of Star Trek-centric this summer.

Star Trek Academy: Collision Course- How Spock and Kirk met and joined Starfleet.

Star Trek: Destiny Trilogy- A fantastic cross over trilogy following the Enterprise, Titan (Riker's ship), Aventine (Dax's ship) and Columbia from Enterprise. The Borg are invading the Federation. Supposed to be

Star Trek Titan: Over a Torrent Sea- The newest Titan novel. They explore a water world and fuck up all kinds of shit. A good read, but not really fantastic to me. Basically focused on the ship's pilot Lavena.

And I'm currently reading Star Trek Voyager: Full Circle. Haven't gotten far into this. Basically following up on what's happened after Voyager returned from the Delta quadrant. Also B'Ellana and Tom's baby is kidnapped :o

How good is Shatner's Collision Course novel. Now that he's finished his recent trilogies, I wondered how he did the meetup of those 2 characters.

Also should get the titan novel.

It's pretty good, it was the first Star Trek book I'd read and I picked it up to read before seeing the new movie. The story was good and adds a bit to Kirk's and Spock's characters and also works to throw off the idea of a completely 100% Utopian future without crime.

Also Kirk gets Spock arrested for stealing a car

I'm also about halfway or two-thirds of the way through Heart of the Assassin by Robert Ferrigno, the third and final part in his Assassin Trilogy (and I just looked at his blog, and apparently now they need a second printing because it's sold so well).

Never did understand that rubbish about "a society without crime", when 90% of
what Kirk et Cie. were doing involved tasks normally left to a Police Department.

I'll have to check it out then. I kinda avoided it despite it being a Shatner novel as it felt too much like an origin story and I wondered what else you could really say.

All I managed to snag was the first Nagash the Sorcerer novel and a Warhammer Comic that is a blatant case of false-advertising (Cover promised different art, and back summary promised different story). The Nagash novel was a tolerable read though.
