Please let this be true. It's feasible from the country that brings us a lot of madness in general.

Next step, those giant tower elevators to space Space agencies are always so fond of.

Although we're a few decades away from Gundam 00 if that also came true.

In tangentially related Japanese news, they also voted out the party that's been in power for over 50 years. We might see some interesting news in the near future.

It's just like Microwave power in SimCity! Who knows, this might actually work. If not, they could turn it into a death ray.

'Fraid not -- most of the tech-folk I talk to about this have pointed out the epic
lossage involved in getting the beam from the sat to the ground station; I'll ask them
about exact numbers.

That figures, these things are always impractical in execution.

I'm not sure if what we're doing to the ozone layer would make it better or worse.

The one thing I can see this being useful for if they can get it operational and prove it works, is supplying power to the ISS and various other orbital facilities. If you dont have to have the powerplant attached to the rest of the structure, then its easier to replace when it finally goes tits-up. Coupled with the fact you could easily have an array powering a moonbase in this manner, and its starting to make more sense...

And they hope to have it ready to rock within four years.

RTFA
Bloomberg

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and IHI Corp. will join a 2 trillion yen ($21 billion) Japanese project intending to build a giant solar-power generator in space within three decades and beam electricity to earth.

A research group representing 16 companies, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., will spend four years developing technology to send electricity without cables in the form of microwaves, according to a statement on the trade ministry’s Web site today.

Go for it, guys. Lots of groundwork technology to be invented/perfected first, so you'd better get started. Also, space elevator. Lots of material to be shuttled into orbit, so we're gonna need one a' those.

That is what my (aeronautical engineer) father kept telling me. I can't count the
number of projects which ahev "looked good on paper", and failed epically when some
fool tried to build it....

And folks wonder why I'm a Cynic.... :)

Wow. There aren't any plans for an AI sentience on this thing, are there?

And only 294,000? Maybe I'm missing something again.
