Can we make membership of ALL political parties illegal? Then we might actually get something done about the mess...

I find that hard to credit. Because we'll be in the hands solely of civil servants.

How DO British free-speech provisions work, anyways? I know they're a bit more restrictive than here, and I know in some European countries it's a crime to, say, deny the Holocaust.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...
Sorry. Yes we can say pretty much what we like BUT don't say anything that rock's the boat or criticises a minority. And not just Nazi's like the BNP-even criticizing some of the less salubrious parts of say Sharia law can earn you a 'incitment to racisal hatered rap'. Of course we don't live in Soviet Russia but with as much CCTV as we have and a government that will next be telling us how to wipe our arse...

Can I have the fist, please? It's bad enough being punched, being branded by a red hot piece of metal is far worse.

Just why is shaira law given it's own legality over national law? Maybe I'm misreading it, and please, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's pretty damn well what it looks like!

I believe the caveat is both parties have to agree to it, not much consolation in a Forceful Culture but -shrugs-

Oh -- so, for instance, having a Black-Only group is against the law? Or an Oriental-
only group? How about all those Homosexual-only groups?

Leftist imbeciles.

No no no.

SOME Sharia courts are allowed but can only be used where both parties give consent.
They're actually rather interesting as they give weight to spoken word agreements more than English law courts. Anyone who said 'I will give you £10,000' for the business' and then backs out would be held accountable.

Also they can't overrule Brit law courts.

Yes, you cannot restrict membership to particular ethnic groups.

I fail to see how this is a problem for political organisations. They need to be representative of the community they intend to run, and despite what the BNP may "think" (And I use that word very loosely) the community now is a little more diverse than it used to be.

"Groups", no. POLITICAL PARTIES yes. This is like the Democrats banning all Black members, or the Republicans telling all Asians to piss off. Bet you'd love people doing things like that going by that comment.

...you know, the more I think about it, the more I realize that Canada doesn't have visible minorities in Parliament. If they do, they're in the back, out of the spotlight. It's the white population that seems to make it in. It's relatively even anglophone/francophone however...

Hmmm... need to look into that!

The worst thing about all this is that it never stops. You get someone saying 'You cant do that, because its not equal!'. Then they'll see something else, and say 'Oh, and thats not equal either, fix it!'. Then something else, and then something else... soon enough you begin to realise that they're seeing problems where problems dont actually exist, all in the name of fairness and equality. THAT is where the issues come from.

We really dont need these people trying to be the champions of everyone, because lets face it, if we wanted them, we'd ask for them. But no, we get these pompous imbeceils pratting about and telling anyone with an opinion that differs from their own utopian viewpoint that they're racist or bigoted or whatever. Blatant hatred and discrimination, sure. No-one wants that. Its when it gets all petty and snide, thats when its gone beyond purpose.

This is also applicable to many other topics, ranging from *twitch* Health and Safety, to environmentalism, to the legal system and 'yuman rites'. I say the sooner we call bullshit on all this crap, and get it sorted out properly in the first place, the better.

Right, not gonna rant anymore. Where's my damn coffee...

To be honest, 80% of the people I've heard using this argument are doing it to cover up their own racism and/or counter something perfectly reasonable (health insurance or something, I never said they were rational). The rest are usually pretty much justified though, I've seen my share of equality loons.

I'm from Australia, the land of "I'm not racist but..." *coughyesyouarecough* Man am I sick of this.

Actually, I would, but not for the reason most people think.

Personally, I *love* the idea of having parties like BNP around -- let them spew
whatever kind of rubbish they want. It would be like a store with a "No Blacks"
policy -- "fine, go ahead; and when you go out of business because no one else
wants to have a fucking thing to do with you, well, maybe you'll get a clue".

Trying to ban or otherwise suppress these idiots fails on two counts:

1) Banning them just sends them underground, and/or forces them to, shall we say,
"the next step" (the one involving explosives), and;
2) If they can be banned, who's next?

So, let the BNP say and do as they like (so long as they aren't assaulting, murdering,
raping, or otherwise harming folks). Their continuing marginalization will prevent
them ever being a legitimate threat -- and if they ever *do* become mainstream,
it should be a Big Honkin' Clue to the current powers "hey, guys -- You Are Fucking
This Up".

For good or ill, Freedom Of Speech means occasionally having to listen to something
you *don't* agree with. (A point rapidly being lost on both sides over here, damn it.)
