Things start getting a bit 1984

I thought that started happening once New Labour rocked up at the door of Parliament.

But then if the BNP did that I'd probably sod off as well. If only because that meant the nation had sold out and brought in some idiotic Hitler wannabe. But where to go...

Westminster.

Part of me just wants to sneak into a BNP rally, hide above the stage, wait for Nick Griffin to come out, then lob a jar of... Jarate at him.

"JARATE! OH NO! I HAVE BEEN SHOWN WHO IS THE BOSS!"

Question Twelve: 'The country is being evacuated in an emergency, and you may now move to wherever you like to start a new life. Where do you go, and why?'

Ed, mind if I add your answer as well? Been doing these a while, and never asked you since I don't have an MSN/AIM address for you.

Man, I'd hate leaving the place, but... probably the States, to catch up with various insane internetpeople and do some crazy things.

On another note, this thread has taught me two things: el-b is rapidly fading into white noise, and Eastwood's patriotic speeches still put a tear in my eye.

I don't understand why you guys are giving the BNP such a hard time? I mean, how would you feel if you were missing a good friend?

My Bailout Nation of choice has always been Australia. Not that it would be the least bit easy to get there, but if the US goes bust, Canada most likely goes with. Mexico...only in order to get through it as fast as possible enroute to Brazil.

And I just can't fucking handle those huge-ass spiders down there. I'd be a flamethrower-wielding sonovabitch in no time, burning down half the city until someone got a good shot in.

Aussie critters are much nastier in many ways, but the OMFG KILL IT quotient is significantly lower. Also Perth looks nice in the pictures.

Edit: Muslim Extremism. Yeah, it's there. No, it's not a Religion of Crazies as a whole or even as a basis. But I think the difference between Islam and Christianity is we in the West have already been through literally centuries of balls-to-the-wall and heads-on-the-floor warfare for the express purpose of imposing religious doctrine worldwide (or the parts we could get to, anyways).

We learned through blood and fire that it doesn't work. Tolerance was developed as a grudging alternative to beating each others' heads in war after war after war.

That hasn't really happened in Islam. To the contrary, Islam reached its peak expansion through invasion and conversion-by-the-sword. Military strongmen are still highly revered in Islam, bearing the promise of a return to glory days when loot and wine flowed in the streets, mingling with the blood of the enemies of Allah. Would-be prophets speak of cleansing the earth for a new age.

In nations where comfort is reasonably well available, this undercurrent is extremely muted by the "Inshallah" (God Wills It) idealism --- "we are in comfort, God has provided for us, we have no cause to chafe". There are still extremists but they receive little support.

In poor or shattered or badly-led nations, extremism spikes, and "Inshallah" is reinterpreted --- "we are cursed, God is punishing us, an atonement must be made...who can pay for the sins we imagine we have incurred?". The void of need is filled by the raging imams and opportunistic leaders who promise death to whatever boogeyman plays best to the crowd.

To understand how Islam -- or anyone -- is best lived beside, one needs to learn what things will prevent him from being your peaceable neighbor. This was, and is, the great failure of America in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Been there once, as I have family out there. Nice place. It's hot, but it's a dry heat, so it's rather enjoyable.

Just watch out for the spiders. THEY HIDE IN YOUR TEACUPS.

Good thing I drink coffee instead...

As far as bailing goes, always been partial to the US, or possibly Canada.

I could never live in Australia, too pissing hot, and as far as the local fauna goes, if it's not poisonous it's a motherfucking shark.

That's lucky, I kill spiders in boiling water.
I've never seen big spiders vibrate so quickly.

They hide in cups of all sorts. Which is why the relatives put the mugs away open-end down, so nothing can hide in it.

I've never seen anyone ever do that.

...I do that... Saves from having to rinse them out when you're about to have a glass of juice or a mug of tea. (Note: coffee + me = running around on the ceiling vibrating à la G.I.R., scaring my co-workers, along with not being able to shut up, causing said co-workers to forbid me from ever drinking coffee again.)

Virus can attest to the cup thing. And maybe, potentially the coffee thing. He may have experienced it via Skype. Can't remember...

I want to clean your dusty cups from the

I wash my mugs as and when I need to use them.

Pix - That's probably my favourite episode of Black Books. "Bernard! Bernard! I'm a prostitute robot from the future!"

"Right now, I'm eating scrambled egg, with a comb, from a shoe!"

Cups and mugs go open-end down in our cupboards too. I'd never really questioned the why, that's just how it is.
