I've recently been introduced to an old british show called Spitting Image. as someone whose only exposure to british comedy came from the quality programs of the Public Broadcasting System and viewers like me this was a somewhat new yet familiar show.

a few thoughts on it from a Yank.

-I raged at the south african song.
-I lol'd at the various politician skits.
-I 0_o at the cabaret/tory spoof.
-I have had that fucking chicken song in my head since I heard it.
-those muppets gave me nightmares. for perspective; this is coming from a motherfucker who's primary job revolves around kicking in doors and shooting people in the chest.

I've noticed something about british-style satire, in that it can either be dry irony or outright calling the person a babyfucking murderer, which I'm not quite sure is satire at all, really.

Spitting Image has been off the air for years. I don't even think I ever managed to watch it in it's original run.

That being said, serious satire is a dead art in the post-Hutton world, as only the Beeb or Channel 4 had the skill to do it, and the BBC lost its balls years ago, and Channel 4 are happy just to show US imports and reality shows.

The closest you'll get to satire now is HIGNFY, and even occasionally on MtW until they take the piss for 'being satire'.

This Gentleman is probably one of the better satirists working these days. Tv has lost it's balls.

Spitting Image was brilliant-I remember watching them when I was 5 and not getting it.
Now I can look back and LoL.
This is the best Spitting Image song in my humble opinion.

You're a god amongst men. Except in Rapture, but that's a whole different thing.

Eh, it's a fairly nasty song now, and I don't agree with demonising an entire country, but apartheid South Africa was a fairly nasty place. Learning South African history does make you want to give everyone a slap though, Boer and Zulu alike.

So has alot of british shows that find their way across the pond via PBS and the youtubes.

that said, I don't like it, but not enough to prevent myself from enjoying it.

alot like the pain.
