If its the less than steller acting, the obvious cheesy fights you hve a problem with....theres notihng you can do, but if you want to see it in the best quality with updated cg, then check out Star Trek Remastered. They did a pretty decent job of replacing all the background mattes with more believable scenary, new CG graphics and cleaned up the colours and such.

I wonder whether LotR fans or Trekkies would murder me first if I started singing the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.

I'm more disturbed by the possibility that they join in.

I kind of share Fry's feelings about classic Trek: "You know, eighty episodes, about twenty good ones." Best being, of course, The Trouble with Tribbles!

Finally back home, and I have to say that Abrams did a spectacular job at reinvigorating Star Trek that makes it accessible to newcomers of Trek, but also give many notes and nods to classic trek. THe actors fit the roles quite well, with the friendship between Kirk, Spock and McCoy retained in this alternate reality. The only one that is slightly off is the actor who plays Checkov, who's russian accent i think is even more heavy than original Checkov, but still comes off pretty funny. Theres a good balance of comedy, action and character development, as the action isnt the forefront of the movie as some i suspect feared it would be. The characters are the main focus, as trek used to be.

The CG is pretty stunning, with the Apple store look that oddly fits quite well, the engineering decks though giving a stark contrast in looks, having a industrial feel to everything. The engineering deck looks even larger than either TOS enterprise of the A variation.

It's on my DVD list when it arrives thats for sure.

How was Pegg?

He's the one I thought was most apart from original Scotty, and yet fits just as well. Much more humorous and as the Mirror noted, more Pegg than Scott, but thats not a bad thing. His scottish accent was convincing as well.

So yeh, he was pretty decent. Loved it when he goes "Get down from there!!" to his small collegue. XD (Slight Spoiler)

Also, the new Enterprise look works verrrrrry well. I think alot of us Trek fans were cautious on the new look, but it looks like a beaut. Same for the Kelvin, with the opening really close flyover of her at the beginning ;.

Well, I've just seen it, and I'm going to make a statement that I'm certain will cause more than a few Trekkies to come round my house and take it in turns to pee through my letterbox, but it must be said - I think it's even better than The Wrath of Khan.

It's pretty damn spectacular, a great action ride that gets the balance between action scenes and characterisation and story spot on! The cast do a great job, none of them just doing impersonations of the original cast, but being sure to include a few little mannerisms and such in tribute to them. Also, the look of the film is incredible, the CGI is some of the best I've ever seen, and while everyone may love the sleek new Enterprise, I personally was most impressed by Nero's ship, I think it may be one of the most bad-ass spaceships ever!

If I really, really had to nitpick though, there are two teeny little niggles I have with it: 1) Although it has one of the best openings of any film in a good long while, which really brought tears to my eyes at points, the rest of the movie, as good as it is, never quite tops it in my opinion, but still not for any lack of trying. Point 2), and a bit of a spoiler it's a little too convienient how Kirk and old Spock run into each other- that whole planet and he lands like half a mile away? Apart from that though, the film is damn near perfect- this year's Dark Knight I rekon (although a lot more cheerful)! Now, how about the Borg for the sequel...

Heh, I wouldn't blame you for thinking this was better than Wrath of Khan as I was thinking the same thing. Although I like to think of them equal in giving 2 different era's of Trek.

Please no Borg in the sequel though, seems its the staple enemy now in movies, episodes and even in the novels lately. Star Trek Destiny spanning various ages, and still its the Borg. I think the sequel would perhaps bring back the Klingons as either enemies or at least cold war rivals, that or some new race we have yet to see or expanded upon.

I also picked up the new Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection boxset, which packages the 6 movies of the TOS crew now in high quality sound and video. It wa that or the Remastered season 1 boxset, may get that later.

Maybe you're right, I was just thinking, since the franchise has regained its credibility, they could do the same.

Still, there's some pretty good sequel potential in there, after all Nero was cruising around for 25 years before Spock showed up, who knows what he was up, what else he may have changed or messed with while he was there, maybe the sequel could use that? But it will probably be better if they do something completely new, stick with the good old "explore strange new worlds" philosophy.

Oh, and how well did this do the classic Trek cliches? I nearly cheered when I saw them leave the ship with a redshirt, knowing full well how it was going to end!

Heh, as I said, many references and old classics that Star Trek fans will love, and newer fans will still enjoy the experience of.

As for what happened to Nero in those 25 years, it was already revealed that he was captured by Klingons and sent to the Rura Penthe penal colony before he escaped and went back to his ship. It was originally part of a subplot to reveal more of Nero, but Abrams cut it out as it apparently was too confusing. We'll prob see it in the extras when the DVD comes out.

you know, I'm tempted to get that Enterprise toy now to put in my room, lawl.

My opinions are the same as Ed and Jeff, so I won't repeat them. About Pegg, personally, this is the best I've ever seen him do. Same with Karl Urban. When he came on the screen and gave a credible performance I turned to my friend and said, "This can't be Karl Urban!? He's doing a good job!" So, yes, everyone should go see it. I need to see it more. I also need to buy more merch, and everybody totally dug my Starfleet Command uniform! :D

SPOILER: Usually, I hate time travel stories, but this is a rare exception. I really felt that Abrams and crew were basically saying, "We love the old stuff and we just going to leave it be and respect it as is. So, with that in mind, we've created a new universe that we can explore and have fun in. Plus, there's the added bonus that everything is new again and you don't really know what's going to happen now!" My hats off to Abrams for having the sheer balls to destroy Vulcan. I totally didn't believe what I was seeing. I also totally appreciated how the crew didn't come back and use time travel to undo all the interesting shit that just happened. Nope, the film-makers stuck by what they did and I applaud them for it.

You appreciate the story and Nero even more after reading the Countdown comic series as well, which is also canon, that bridges that universe to the new one.

Interestingly, the countdown series is also part of the history of Star Trek Online. and theyve still got 10 years of history to tell us which was interesting.

Just got back.

I have never seen an entire Star Trek movie before, and not watched a single episode of the series, ever. I know a few of the catchphrases and the general themes from seeing bits and pieces and compilation videos, but in general I'm totally ignorant.

Quick thoughts for now:

- It was awesome.
- I can see how people could get addicted to this.
- It was basically like having the inmates take over the asylum. It was a movie by fans for fans.
- It should have been called: "Star Trek: James T. Kirk Hangs Off Of Ledges."

More later.

I'm still weighing in my mind the decision whether or not to see this for myself. On the one hand, I'm not a Trek fan, nor was I ever really one; on the other hand, this movie is a clean slate of sorts, so maybe that could be an advantage here.

As far as Star Trek goes, I've only ever watched a few things of it...
1. TNG episode "Dark Page" - I must have been a little kid at the time, I remember going to a friend's house and watching it there on TV.
2. The movie First Contact - I must have been 10 years old at the time, and I remember my Dad bought me along to see it because he wanted to see it himself. I really knew nothing about the series itself, but I was certainly able to figure out the basics: Federation good, Borg bad, gone back in time to alter/preserve history. I managed to enjoy it nonetheless.
3. DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars" - I'd heard about it because of the whole "messing with your head" thing which is a trope that's been used in episodes in many other series, where a character can't decide what's real and what's fake. After having seen a few other said episodes (the Stargate: SG-1 episode "The Changeling," the Stargate: Atlantis episode "The Real World," and the Smallville episode "Labyrinth"), I decided to see this one as well.
4. The movie Galaxy Quest, if that counts at all. :P

No, no it doesn't.

It is if you want a parody of the original series and fanbase in general. On it's own its still a pretty good movie that stands tall in my dvd shelf.

Ok, I'll agree with that much. It is one of Tim Allen's few family movies that I like.

Just saw it with me dad, who's actually watched the original series. We both liked it, it really seemed to capture the characters pretty well. I'd like to see what a sequel does with it.

Pretty much most ppl are enjoying the film, een my friend who really doesnt care much for Star Trek and his mom, who dislikes Star Trek came out impressed.

On a side note, it seems picking up the novel may be in order for the full expereince as it apparently delves a bit more detail on character backgrounds and events. Apparently.

Oh, in the meantime, here's one guy's thoughts on the subject (Matt Moylan of "LilFormers")... Holy Trek!

I'm interested in STO, if only because I may be able to cruise around the galaxy in a blue spaceship with flames. As a Klingon, hopefully.

Mind you, it's being developed by Cryptic, and currently led by Jack 'Reichsman' Emmert. That guy's a little notorious around the CoH parts.
