New big-budget HP Lovecraft movie in the works! This could be good news, except I have a few reservations, like why the hell is Ron Howard directing a Lovecraftian story, and what damage will studio interference do? Still, this may get a few more people interested in ol' Howard's work, and it may also mean Del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness is a little less far off after all.

How young are we talking about? Depending on the age, this would be my choice for the title role. Though I'm really not so sure about this project, because how well do you think Lovecraft's stuff will sell when everyone finds out just how much of a racist he was?

He's actually a half decent director. Did Apollo 13.

Everyone knows Lovecraft was a racist kook, nobody cares, and it's not hard to excise the racism from his stories.

'and it's not hard to excise the racism from his stories. '

his cat was called nigger man lol. it would probably be quite hard to rub out all the racism from a hp movie since his books describe anyone non white as apelike 'negroid' savages and he went into seething rages if a minority even breathed near him. planetary took the piss out of him epically by having him believe black people came from eggs.

funnily enough he married a jew.

i'm wondering how theyre going to go about this in the henry ford move as well since he was a massive anti semite.

Just as well you don't have literary descriptions in a movie, eh?

True, but he's not exactly the first guy I'd think if I had to choose someone to direct a Lovecraftian horror, he's never done a horror before, and all his other "genre" films have been mostly "meh". I'd have gone with someone who's had a bit more relevant experience, like maybe John Carpenter.

i'm wishing the director luck actually. john carpenters last films have all been pretty rubbish. hes ridden his apocalypse trilogy to the bank and back a hell of a lot (my fave movies the thing) and the guy who made that decent more horror themed remake of kairo, pulse, did a pretty good job with only a career in making music videos. just hope this doesnt get meddled with by the big bosses too much.
if it was micheal bay i might be worried, hed probably make the crawling chaos entirely out of explosions lol.

id think the best guy to make a movie of this though would probably be someone whos used to creating sheer atmosphere, since the monsters would probably have little screen time, you know, with the whole see then and you go mad thing.

Let's hope that De Toro movie gets off the ground. He'd be perfect.

I'm more concerned where my 'Whisperer in the Darkness' from the HPL Historical society is.
This could be good. I'll watch any film Lovecraft related so this'll get a looky at least.
I think Howard will do a good job-Frost/Nixon was Gold.

When Ron Howard does good films, they're pretty damn good. Then again, he did also make that awful live-action Grinch movie...

Best of luck to him on this though. I'm not overly familiar with the works of Lovecraft though (aside from some vague notion that saying "C'thulu F'tagn" repeatedly is a really stupid idea).

No, it's true, he really does.
I really enjoyed "The strange music of Erich Zann," and am surprised nobody ever really mentions that one. It's possible I enjoyed it the most because of its relatively short descriptions of things and lack of "And a skeleton popped out of the closet!"* being the ending line, which might alter my perspective from that of most Lovecraft fans.

*This makes it look like I think most Lovecraft stories suck, which isn't the case.

Who do you think should play the older version of Lovecraft? Personally, I feel the only choice would be John Malkovich.
