Considering the fact that they were in "They Walk Among Us" (the place used in the "Spaced" episode Tim is fired by Bilbo) where they most likely sell parts to the game or at least the comics/books, I would certainly call it a shameless plug.

It was a joke about the geeky nature of the guy they had to get the info from. By the same logic, you could say the fact that Tim mentioned Babylon 5 in Spaced was a plug, even though they were making a joke that it was shit.

I was not impressed in the least by this three parter. They relied too heavily on pop culture, and was a shameless plug for the TV station "Dave", "Coronation Street", "Warhammer" and "Red Dwarf" merchandise. The dialogue wasn't nearly as biting and cutting as they could have been, and it was just a feeling of "What the FUCK" and "meh" all the way through the three shows. I felt that it wasn't in the least coherent, and left me feeling bewildered, and wondering why they even bothered to make this.

Well, it was a plug for Dave...because that's the station that made it. The reason they had Coronation Street in is because that's where Craig Charles works now. I've already covered the Warhammer thing and nobody has made any Red Dwarf merchandise for ages and there hasn't been any for sale in the shops even now.

Series 7 and 8 were superior to this pile of crap in my opinion (and I hated those two series thanks to the chick). Having the twit K'chnski enter the scene was merely flicking poo at the brilliance of series 1-6. Her appearance was tolerable compared to this "special". This lacklustre and inferior offering was just shoveling the shit over the series and totally ruining it's credibility.

So it's business as usual for the Red Dwarf crew? Where are the resurrected personnel? What happened after Rimmer kicked Death in the balls? Why did only Lister survive? Did they completely forget about series 7 and 8 and decide to keep it going from 6? Are they ever going to truly make it back to Earth? Where the hell is Holly? Why did they leave so many MORE threads dangling?

I'm kind of confused...you hated Series 7-8 yet mad that they kind of quietly ignored it? Thing is, I kind of like the fact they didn't answer all the questions, though they did mention why Holly wasn't working, the 2 million year bath leak. OK yes it's a cheap joke to explain basically they couldn't get the actors for him/her.

I honestly thought that this would be the "end of Red Dwarf", where they would a) get back to Earth thus ending the mission of the Dwarf, b) Lister dies thus ending the mission of the Dwarf, or c) the ship blows up, thus ending the mission of the Dwarf. Instead, they just kept it going, trying to milk a dying cow.

You realise that there's no plans for any more episodes at this current point in time. Though that could change and if this is the end it wasn't that bad, certainly better than the ending for season 8.

I expected so much better than this. This wasn't Red Dwarf. It was just shameless product placement that went nowhere at all. And the whole "Dream Squid" recycling thing? They can just fuck off and come up with something new.

Personally I though the reusing of the Despair Squid was rather clever, but eh, to each his own. I kept things very Dwarfy.

And wouldn't the episode be more of, you know, a shameless plug of blade runner by that logic, since they dropped it's name in there, as well? Not to mention parts of the plot.

Why would they leave series 8 on a cliff-hanger and then completely ignore it? I wanted to know what happened after that rather than what they came up with for this "special".

I guess my personal bottom line was "It sucked", and I'm moving on. Hopefully they won't make another. I don't want to be disappointed again.

Ah well, each to their own. *shrug* You liked it, I loathed it, let's leave it at that shall we?

Maybe the reason why I hated it so much was because I've never seen "Blade Runner". I might have appreciated the humour more then.

Coincidentally enough, I saw Blade Runner for the first time fairly recently. The homage sequences were way overblown, even to the point of name-dropping it? A pastiche should speak for itself, it was just lame to state early on: "And now we're gonna do a Blade Runner parody" and then do a massive Blade Runner parody. Blade-running it into the ground. I liked the Coronation Street bits, though.

The overall plot... was disappointing. Not epic at all, just another one of many alternate reality episodes. Which would be fine if it was an episode within a series, but I was expecting something bigger. It was Back To Reality crossed with Better Than Life - the novel version, where the BTL game hides itself from your mind so you don't remember entering, while fulfilling your fantasies so you have no desire to leave. In fact, stop me if this sounds familiar, but at the end of the first novel, Dave discovers he's in a dreamworld, but as he's about to exit, he stops to think about his pathetic life outside in the real world, and decides to stay with Kochanski, because even though he knows it's all in his imagination, it's better than cold lonely reality. It's not until the start of book two that he changes his mind and rejects it.

There were some good lines and some good character interaction, which was nice to see after so long. The image enhancement sequence was hilarious. And pushing Kremlin Kate into traffic... Oh gods. But there were plenty of scenes that were supposed to be funny but fell flat, or were funny at the start, but then they span the joke out too long til it overstayed its welcome. It probably could've been a half hour ep to be honest, and might have been more snappy and streamlined because of it.

A solid 'Meh' from me.

Yeah, I think that might be the problem.

I was just expecting Red Dwarf. Nothing special. Just plain ol' vanilla Red Dwarf. And I was truly satisfied.

For being the first new material for ten years, and for being an hour and a half 'special', something actually special would have been nice, wouldn't it? Even taken as an ordinary episode it was a derivative and unimaginative one.

One of the things that bothered me was how quickly they accepted themselves as fictional characters. They've experienced alternate realities before, they should be wise to it by now. None of them wanted to believe their first squid-induced hallucination at first. Why fall for this one so readily?
