[ZD Net Article]

Basically, this proposal states that if the college doesn't have some sort of alternative to P2P file-sharing they would lose their financial aid.

This is freakin' stupid.

The college I went had these little things called firewalls.
Problem solved.

For a college to have to provide a service seems pretty dumb.

And to punish those who don't even have a computer is ridiculous...
I guess if you're downloading files AT the college you're not exactly bright in the first place... but to just can financial aid over something like that seems like it's a bit much.

Of course the MPAA likes the idea, but this would screw over so many college students if it was put into effect. I mean... punishing the honest students if the college doesn't do something about it, just seems waay too unfair.

Pretty much akin to saying give us all your money or I'll break your legs, then break them anyway after you got it. The lower-income students will be hit the hardest in more ways than one if this goes through for you americans.

I have my doubts this'll get through, Congress is a mess at the moment. Though still, it's INCREDIBLY stupid. Students will continue to download everything for free.

The worst part is that 90 percent of students who do P2P downloading at college probably don't even realize this is presently an issue

Given I go to a community college, so my apartment pc is the download monkey. But I don't like the idea of my college deciding not to provide this service when kids are running around campus with their laptops downloading cheap pop music and porn, then losing financial aid over it....

...... I need a baseball bat and a cloaking device so bad

Is the aim of this to stop P2P filesharing, to free up the money, or to ensure that America gets less education?

Dubious.
