A very odd finding, although more odd that the Register linked to a finding that beer makes you smarter and I never posted it here.

Almost exactly a month after we learnt that drinking beer makes you clever, a Spanish boffin has proved that the golden grog is also better at rehydrating the human body after excercise.

Manuel J Castillo Garzón, Professor of Human Physiology from Spain's University of Granada, got a bunch of students to run around in temperatures of 40°C then gave half of them a half-pint of beer while the rest got the same amount of water.

The Spanish prof reckons the bubbles and carbohydrates in beer help quench the thirst and replace lost calories, according to The Telegraph.

A quick straw poll at Vulture Towers reveals a beer before exercise to be a popular option, although avoiding the risk of dehydration by skipping the whole exercise thing and going straight for a lager also made a strong showing.

I heard of this on the radio today...

It sounds like a crock of shit to me... But I'm not that scientific of a person, so really, what the hell do I know?

It's still a funny theory though.

Funny thing about beer and water... back in the Middle Ages, even people didn't know anything then about germs or bacteria, they preferred drinking beer instead of water because the bacteria couldn't live in the alcohol.

"Replace lost calories"? There was one time where I went celebrating the end of exams after eating nothing that day. After 8 pints I couldn't remember a thing and I'm forever to be known as a frickin' lightweight.

Anyway, those replacement calories were mopped up off the floor.

Casual observation of my peers seems to confirm the results of both studies, except for the part where the rats had too much. I have friends that get absolutely hammered the night before exams, and they haven't gotten dumb enough to flunk yet.

I wonder what their methods were. I assume that students who voluteer for this kind of study would not be alcohol virgins. If a person had never had a beer before, would the results be the same? Did they actually have a method of measuring rehydration, or did they just ask the test subjects what they liked better? I'd like to see the actual peer reviewed article - of course, this could just be a "look, my research has public appeal, give me money" kind of study.

Did this study take into account the obvious medium-term effects of alchohol on hydration? In that it inhibits the production of hormones to reabsorb water into the blood from the kidneys, so you urinate more? So you get dehydated again?

Gotcha beat... It takes me two pints of guiness on an empty stomach to earn me the title of lightweight. Every time... I can have three if I eat. Four if I'm talked into it.

All I can think of is that Australian ad where a town running low on water diverts it to the brewery, and uses beer for everything.

We sure love our beer. I'm not too keen on it myself though.

Can't really say I'm a fan of beer. It has no taste. Even if you completely disagree.

Wine coolers and malts, on the other hand...

Next you'll be telling us you drink Bacardis. Then I'll be forced to break your legs.

I've taken to occasionally having a cider after a heavy meal. Don't think I've had one since Lothar came down in october.

As Psychostick once sang: "beer is good, beer is good beer is good-and stuff!"

I do like a nice cold one, prefering ales to lagers. But I'll never believe it's doing me good.

Jagermeister on the other hand is made of herbs so is 100% good for you.

Never had Bacardi. I typically go for Smirnoff Ice.

You're drinking the wrong beer.

Budweiser? Miller? Shit, pretty much any cheap American beer isn't worth the effort to drink unless you're at a party doing beer bongs.

Nothing wrong with a fruity malt beverage. It's a great way to follow up a night of the hard stuff. Makes your mouth taste far less horrible.

Here's a good resource for anyone looking to drink beer that isn't shitty.

Budweiser? Miller?

I've tried Cordova (at least I think that's what it is called, can't really remember) and Jager; they all have no taste, plain and simple.

Ah, but I consider myself dubious and relatively alcohol free; I only drink in moderation and only at formal gatherings.

...You make it sound like my dubiousness is relative to anything other than the article, and my alcohol-free nature is related to anything other than "that's what I do, have done for a while, and will continue to do".
I'm not sure if that's your intention per se, but that's the impression I got.

A lager, maybe, or a glass of water that you drink. But a pint of stout?

No likey the beer. Drink cider pretty regularly. Though courtesy of Silver Lynx in Brazil, I had two bottles of cachaça. Lime, sugar, ice, and 43% Vol. sugarcane spirit: caipirinha is guud. Get kinda blasted after two... Drank it all now though.

Can't stand beer at all. And I can only handle very little cider. But I do like whine (white whine more) and I get pretty tipsy after a few cups. I do like rum but it has to be the flavoured kind. I like flavoured beverages.

I'll only have wine in a fancy restaurant. I prefer dry white. As far as cocktails go, I quite like Tequila Sunrises, Mojitos and Half And Halfs but I couldn't imagine drinking them at a bar or anything. Only when I'm just chilling at home.

Also, my brothers know how to make a kick-ass Egg Nog which comes in handy this time of year.

What about when you add the Red Bull?

I'm gonna end up sculling a Jagerbomb one of these days. I'm currently still in the 'scab whatever you can' stage of drinking. I have developed a taste for vodka though.
