Any of the British forumers here planning on watching the American football game being played in Wembley on Sunday? I've been anticipating this for a long time, considering American football is such a keystone element of the culture on this side of the pond, and I'm told there's at least a small share of fans in England, too. I'm very curious as to how it will all be received (the tickets did sell out in 90 minutes). As long as we're hoarding David Beckham and trying to pump up enthusiasm for soccer over here (it's working!), why not see if our peculiar, extremely American game can catch on elsewhere? I have mental images of foldouts in London papers explaining how to watch the game... puzzled pub-goers going, "Encroachment? What the bloody hell is 'encroachment'?"... Basically, I'm excited. We're showing off our goofy sport, so big here and so not anywhere else. How's it being received? EDIT: P.S.: There's one unanticipated problem with this game. The Dolphins are a pathetic 0-7. It might be a blowout. I hope not. DOUBLE EDIT: Here's a good article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20071026/wl_csm/onfl |

We do play gridiron down here in Australia as well, among many other sports. A few of my cousins play it on a semi-professional level. Of course it's in the shadow of our iconic game, Australian Rules Football. |

I'd rather sterilise myself with a claw hammer. With football (Real football, where feet and balls are known to meet on multiple occasions) and rugby to compete against for the nations attention, it's unlikely it'll kick off. Especially with the perception it's merely poofs rugby. |

I'm equally excited about this as I am about football and rugby! So not at all then. I heard there was some ongoing rugby event on recently? Must have been significant for me to have even heard of it. England got knocked out, right? Aww, damn, that's a real... that's really... No, I'm sorry, I cant even fake it. |

My immediate thoughts were less claw hammer, more 'drive over myself in a bulldozer' kind of way. Also, a lot of feet and balls were thought of, but it was more human feet and human balls. |

I believe I heard something about that when I was at work. I believe, at the time, I was asking if a mate of mine wanted to come round for Doubles on Halo 3 (much easier if you're right next to each other and my TV's big enough for both of us) and he said something about watching England play. At which point I told him 'we'd' lose because 'we're' English and it's sport and promptly told him he had no choice but to get round mine. Did 'we' lose that? |

Ouch. Well, heck, it DID sell out in a hurry. Fine, you rugby snobs (:P), here's a truly rugby-esque college football play for you. http://www.bevosports.com/2007/10/28/trini...ral-final-play/ I'll be watching my first sporting event ever taking place in London today, hahah. (no, not really, I watch soccer--yes, accurately named, fall-down-and-cry-and-look-for-a-yellow-card football--on occasion.) |

To be fair, selling out Wembly is an achievement. It's the second largest sporting stadium in Europe at 90,000 seats. Though in a country of around 62 million people, Lothar did say that was probably the entire UK fanbase. ;p And yeah, we did lose the Rugby. South Africa kicked seven kinds of shit out of us. To be fair to the lads, we did a good job getting to the finals. |

They said they had a million ticket requests--that's literally almost 2% of the country wanted in. 40 minutes is not a long time. Anyways, I think we gave you a pretty good game. 13-10, Giants win. Couple touchdowns, a few field goals, a fumble or two. I was afraid it'd be a boring blowout. I'm pleased. I think the NFL will be welcomed back next year. |

The Miami Dolphins will host the New York Giants in the first competitive NFL game outside of North America at Wembley Stadium on October 28 and the NFL today put the first batch of tickets on sale to fans selected randomly from an overwhelming number of registered ticket requests. More than half a million requests were received within 72 hours of the NFL’s announcement of the game. From NFLLondon2007.com. And that was just for the first sale. I wonder how well a high-profile cricket match would do in the States? |

Epic grave-dig here, but I wanted to mention the following: My beloved New England Patriots will be venturing to your shores (fulfilling a Family Guy prophecy) this week, coming off a 59-0 record-setting blowout, to challenge the utterly woeful 0-6 failure of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who should play slightly worse than the London Silly Nannies. One of my favorite sportswriters has already apologized to the UK for what should be a truly terrible display of American football. I do warn you, though. If the crummy torn-up Wembley grass does anything to Tom Brady's ankle, my vengeance shall be great and wrathful. ;) (P.S.: anyone who takes offense to that clip can feel free to mock the absolute joke that is MLS association football/soccer. And then I'll point out that the US is happily in the World Cup. Nyarr.) |

Red, the group that you're in consisted of Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Trinidad and Tobago. Out of all of those Mexico is probably the best, and the USA lost to them. The second the US goes up against against a half way decent team, like say, Romania, like when you hosted the game in 1994, they'll lose. Or Like in 1998 where they lost all their Group F matches to Germany, Yugoslavia, and Iran. Or in 2002 Where they managed to get through the qualifying stages (Won against Portugala, drew Korea, lost to Poland), and got to the Quarter finals after beating Mexico, they faced Germany and got their arses handed to them. In 2006, they did surprise people by drawing against Italy, but lost all their other matches, against Czech Republic and Ghana. I will be fair though and say while the various England squads haven't won the cup since 1966, we at least manage to get to the quarter finals most times before having our national hopes dashed against the rocks of playing better teams. We also occasionally beat Germany...in friendlies. Simply put, your team simply isn't that good at the game. |
