It does sound very much like a real life trolling attempt doesn't it?
Personally I couldn't care less-just now it'll give those slash fic writers heart palpitations.

It feels glued on after the fact to stir the pot, whip up the conservative elements of the media (I can hear the Daily Hate already) into a frenzy that these devil-books now have the audacity to have a positive homosexual role model.

So maybe she's having a little fun with the idiot brigade. What's so wrong with that? We do it all the time.

And I think this has probably been in her head for a while, not something she just spontaneously decided on throwing out there. I haven't had a chance to read over the seventh book again (or at least, the key parts), but I bet there are hyper-subtle clues in the way Dumbledore talks about Gillert (sp?). (And then again, I could just end up manufacturing those in my mind.)

EDIT: By the way, if the world worked the way I wish it did, this wouldn't have any more effect than some revelation about the length of his beard.

Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about that comic... doesn't really make me want to start reading it again.

Here's how I see it:

I don't care that Dumbledore is gay.

Here is what the potential logic is (as I'm not J.K. Rowling, and don't know what goes on in her head):

Ok, she wrote 7 books that were enormously popular. As each book came out, they were denounced for promoting witchcraft, causing bannings and whatnot. The seventh and final book has been out for three months, causing the frenzy that is Harry Potter to die down. She announces that Dumbledore is gay at this time to start another wave of interest for the books. As we know, when a book is banned and/or denounced, the interest in it increases, which makes some people think "Oh wow! The grown-ups/this-that-and-the other group hate this book! It must be good! I'm going to get it!", which in turn brings in a lot more money.

It's all about the thrill of the "forbidden", or, "what's bad has to be good".

Not that I'm cynical or anything...

To be honest, I don't think she was really intending on creating an uproar or she has any particular agenda to keep the book in the public eye. In fact, had the question not been asked of her, I doubt she would have even bought it up.

Exactly.

How do you explain what she said... "if I'd known you'd be so happy, I would have told you years ago"?

She doesn't have any reason to lie.

Agreed with RedFox. Hell, I do this sort of thing all the time with the comic. In the followup thread I'm always tossing out might-have-beens, incidental trivia that failed to get shown in-comic, and making-of anecdotes. As a creator of fiction, you always think of peripheral stuff that might never make it into the finished work, but are interesting to share with your readers as bonus factoids.

Like that time I revealed the shocking truth that Virus is, in fact, ...a wearer of contact lenses. Utterly irrelevant, never came up anywhere in the comic, never had reason to, but it's something I thought of, and one time decided to share as useless trivia.

Pretty sure you'd get a syntax error if you wrote that.

I think I left out defining variables as well....

Where'd you reveal that?

And how bad is his eyesight without them?

Please fill this thread with random useless facts about the EN crew/universe.

Pre-dict-a-bul! A big group of people who have obviously never read the books are now trying to get them banned because they promote homosexuality along with the old bollocks about witchcraft. Apparently J.K. Rowling is the spawn of the devil and she should "go back to hell where she belongs".

If J.K. Rowling is the spawn of the devil, God sure doesn't have anything to worry about.

I wouldn't worry too much about it being banned tbh. The only place where it causes such an outcry is mainly in america anyway, and even then I doubt they can get it banned without treading on some licencing of freedom of speech laws.

J.K. Rowling's to-do list:
1) Write award winning series of books -check-
2) Sell award winning series of books and become filthy rich -check-
3) Piss off Christians -check-

I don't see why others object about the Harry Potter books. It was written as a fiction book, get over it. Kids can grow up on a lot worse.

The worst part is that they all get on the bandwagon without actually knowing what they're talking about. Like when my brothers and I were watching one of the Lord of the Ring movies, my stepdad got after us for watching something as evil as Harry Potter. We told him it wasn't, and he said, "Doesn't Harry Potter have to throw a ring in a fire or something?"

Not that Lord of the Rings doesn't have wizards and magic and all that other satanic stuff...

But if they actually knew anything about Harry Potter, they wouldn't have a reason to rage would they?

Wilful ignorance is the key strength of obnoxious soccer mums and firebrand preachers hell-bent on keeping their dwindling attendance up. Meanwhile their kids are playing Manhunt and having sex at 12, if you believe the statistics.

BELATED WARNING: Massive jadedness above.

See, the funny thing is, Rowling's been preaching about tolerance ever since the second book, the first time Malfoy spat "Mudblood" at Hermione.

Why does this surprise anyone, particularly fundies?

Of course fundies can't stand anything that preaches tolerance. It goes against everything they do.

Jeez, I'm so glad at least that my Lutheran school only preaches barely veiled messages of 'PLEASE BE CHRISTIAN KIDS! PRETTY PLEASE?' and loves all that tolerance stuff as much as I do.

...man am I jaded.
