(Note to mods: I didn't see specifically a literary discussion board, the other one mentions films, TV and music but not books. And I think both books and D&D have been discussed here so I'm pretty sure it's safe) I doubt I need to link you, it's all over the Internet like Sonic in Brawl, but just in case you've been under a rock for the past 12 hours or so. I really respect J K Rowling for this, not because of promoting tolerance of homosexuality and all that crap (don't get me wrong, I'll defend people's right to be gay to the death), but because she has the balls and the wickedness to essentially troll on a global level. Everyone's response to this alone will be hours of entertainment. |

Surely Rowling doesn't need an attention grab? She's probably got enough money to buy Richard Branson's arms, legs, and non-vital organs and still have money left to never work again. |

Doesn't need to, but why just make him gay? Why wasn't that worked in or implied throughout the course of the books, instead of being glued on well after the fact? That's like someone saying the original "M" in the James Bond movies was in fact gay. It adds nothing to the character, and if announced tommorow, would reek of being an attention grab to stay in the public eye. |

To be fair, she was just answering a question about one of her characters. It isn't like she grabbed a camera and a news reporter and announced it to the world. |

You know, I have never had to read a damn word Rowling wrote beyond the Philosopher's Stone (which I thought was rubbish), but I've probably heard enough about Harry Potter to write an essay on him. Whenever I go to forums where people chat to each other about whatever, there's always this entire parade of threads with something from Harry Potter in the title, and I learn more than I would if I sat down with the books. Of course, it's like reading the tabloids to catch up on the news, but hay, it's more entertaining than the books themselves. Of course, if I want to really bugger my brain, I could always search for Harry Potter slash fiction and abuse my brain more than the last time I read the Eye of Argon. |

My views on this whole "OMFG CHARACTER IS GHEY!": If it ain't mentioned in the book, then it's worth shit to me, and/or not canon. I don't care if it IS the creator, you don't go, "Oh, it never came up in the book, but some character that I'm never going to write about anyway is gay." Her mind, as well as any author's mind, isn't worth the same as their work. If you don't note it in the book, then you may as well go, "Oh yeah, Harry's a robot, and Hermoine is secretly a bisexual. And Ron is actually a space station!" |

Wanna really destory your brain? Do a Google search for "worst fanfic" and click the first result. We're talking setting fire to your head and having elephants stamp it out sort of brain damage here. |

I did the "worst fanfic" search and found crappy Beast Wars fanfictions through the first link. Euugh. About the revelation about Dumbledore... I wouldn't label it as an attention grab right off the bat. Him being gay or straight wouldn't have really made a difference as far as the plots of the books were concerned, and I can't think of him dealing with anything romantic canon-wise, so even if it's been a part of his character design since the first book I can understand it not being obvious. Sexuality is just really another character trait, at least the way I view it. Sometimes it's really influential, sometimes it's not. In this case, it wasn't. |

See, due to how he was represented in the books, I assumed he was asexual. There were pretty much no hints that I remember to him being gay. |

Well, she did say that he was in love with Grindelwald, and it sounds like it wasn't returned. It makes sense now if you think about it, but yeah, he came off as mostly asexual. |

"Attention grab"? Look, if there is ONE person in the world who does NOT need more attention, it is Joanne Rowling. And, as Kalvaza said, she was just answering a fan question. The question of whether she would have answered the same question in the same way had it been asked two years ago... probably not, but only because she was always cagey about giving anything away. THANK YOU, Lothar. I have been reading so many things saying "aw, we never got to make pedophile jokes when the books were still coming!" First of all: yes, you did, everyone did, and secondly, GAY =/= PEDOPHILE, PEDOPHILE =/= GAY. Is that clear enough for the tiny, tiny brains of the internet? Man, people are being dumb about this. Not really here, but... ergh. The Internet does indeed make you stupid. I say it's a good thing. You have a platform, you use it to promote tolerance. Haven't the books always been about tolerance? I mean, the theme is basically stuffed down your throat from the moment the word "Mudblood" appears in the second book. A disgust for prejudice is hardly new here. Also, this doesn't change Dumbledore's role in the book whatsoever. Some say, "so why ever mention it"? Well, why NOT? She was ASKED. The casualness with which she answered suggests that she doesn't see this as being a huge thing at all, and I don't either. It's big because it flies in the face of bigotry, but in terms of the character, it's just like, "yeah, he's gay, so what"? Like she doesn't think it should be any less shocking than revealing a character had blue eyes. And I don't either. The only thing this does for me is put a slightly new face on Albus' great mistakes of the past--done in the name of love, perhaps, not just friendship, making them more understandable and the character more human. I stand by this, and I applaud J.K. Rowling. |

Again, to my mind, it adds nothing (Or takes anything away) from the character. It feels glued on after the fact to stir the pot, whip up the conservative elements of the media (I can hear the Daily Hate already) into a frenzy that these devil-books now have the audacity to have a positive homosexual role model. I call it as I see it. And given there are still people who'd want these books banned because they somehow promote witchcraft, I do feel there's more to this than simply just throwing it out on a whim. |
