Well, maybe be yelling at you for having such poor taste in literature would help?

If you must read his stuff, I suggest having words with your local library, but that stuff is terrible. Then again, I'm biased as I find a lot of that stuff to be the worst fantasy rot going.

Somebody recommended him to me once. I suffered through one out of the three I got, and it was a dry, dull, uninteresting affair, and I only just made it through.

I don't see the appeal.

Bad books are baaaaaad. The only trilogy that could be described as enjoyable is the Dark Elf Trilogy. Seriously, buy the PS3.

You already know I'm a rabid Nintendo fanboy, but by the sound of it even the PS3 is more worth getting than these.

Besides, they have these places called libraries where if you are patient you can read all the books you want for free. FREE! FREE CAPITALIST ENTERPRISE! OR SOMETHING!

Such words spoken from a fanboy or even a gamer are often blashpemous sayings, but only shows the gravity of the situation. Never even heard of the guy but I'll be sure to avoid his works when I go to my local capitalist enterprising library or something.

He created the prototypical "anti-hero". Essentially, the sole good member of a race of utter bastards. This led to unending numbers of crappy clones.

For Drizz'l alone, he should be beaten. Not an easy task, given he was a bouncer.

For Drizz'l alone, he should be eaten. By cannibals.

Sorry, East. Had to "fix" this, because it's how I initally read it when I glanced at it.

But yeah. Seriously? Buy the damn PlayStation 3. There may not be a lot of awesome exclusives for it yet, but give it time. Sony's probably going to be playing the slow and steady game; honestly can't say if that will work out for them, but... really, the PS3 is a better investment than that hack Salvatore's writing.

While it takes some skill to establish a modern archetype, Salvatore created an incredibly irritating, uninteresting character as the posterboy for it. Though other people have executed the concept of "anti-hero" fairly well, it's already become a trite archetype that is very difficult to pull off. Frankly, Drizzt isn't a compelling enough fellow to do the job.

At least with the PS3 and its games, if you run into an annoying, whiny, angsty anti-hero, you can either beat the bajesus out of him or everything else around you to let out your frustration. :P

Inferno... please. For your sake... don't waste your time on Salvatore.

Or the PS3.

Neither is worth your time.

In find this statement ironic considering you have, as your avatar here, a picture of a Drizz't rip-off. And not a particulary good one either.

Prototypical? I think the anti-hero has been around for like, centuries.

Wolverine started the modern trend if anything, though I suppose that particular trait is different.

Maybe he just likes the picture? Or how that Rip-Off is drawn?

But I loathe that "Driss" too [it's a word from german, albeit from a dialect, and sounds very much like the name. Translation is difficult, when it pops up, you could also always use Shit or similar negative nouns in its place].
As a GM, I always have to look out not to create my own (and annoying the players with that), which is a danger everyone of our trade faces. ;-)

I don't know how long that Shit on a stick (mind you, dark elves are dark to begin with) has been around, but as a player I once had a coplayer who played something similar - except that it was fun, because he was ruthless, bad and funny at that - at least for us, because he screwed up every so often. The PC's name was Vigo (like Mortensen), and for me, he is the only dark elf ever worth mentioning. For all the others, see one of the earlier OOTS-Strips.

One day, I wanna play a D&D game (well, I'd like to actually get to play one at all first, but I'll get to that) where everyone is evil and out to accomplish a villainous plan.

I bet City of Villains got this idea into me. Villains are so much more fun than heroes.

Makes for some good PvP opportunities too.
