Well, with the wonderful time that was International Talk like a Pirate Day behind us, we can look forward to other made up traditions! One of which that has turned up at this forum is December 8th, Dress Like a Time Traveller Day. Here are the proposed rules.

Quote:

Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day
Dec. 8th.

Spend the day in costume and character but don't tell anyone that you're a time traveler. Other than that, anything's game.

1) Utopian/clichι Future: "If the Future did a documentary on the last fifty years, this is how badly the reenactors would dress." Think Star Trek: TNG or the Time Travelers from Hob. Ever see how the society in Futurama sees the 20th century? Run with it. Dress with moderately anachronistic clothing and speak in slang from varying decades. Here are some starters:
• Greet people by referring to things that don't yet exist or haven't existed for a long time. Example: "Have you penetrated the atmosphere lately?" "What spectrum will today's broadcast be in?" and "Your king must be a kindly soul!"
• Show ignorance with regular technology. Pay phones should be a complete mystery (try placing the receiver in odd places). Chuckle knowingly at cell phones.

2) Dystopian Future: This one offers more flexibility. It can be any kind of future from Terminator to Freejack. The important thing is dress like a crazy person with armor. Black spray painted football pads, high tech visors, torn up trenchcoats and maybe some dirt. Remember, dystopian future travelers are very startled that they've gone back in time. Some starters:
• If you go the "prisoner who's escaped the future" try shaving your head and putting a barcode on the back of your neck. Then stagger around and stare at the sky, as if you've never seen it before.
• Walk up to random people and say "WHAT YEAR IS THIS?" and when they tell you, get quiet and then say "Then there's still time!" and run off.
• Stand in front of a statue (any statue, really), fall to your knees, and yell "NOOOOOOOOO"
• Stare at newspaper headlines and look astonished.
• Take some trinket with you (it can be anything really), hand it to some stranger, along with a phone number and say "In thirty years dial this number. You'll know what to do after that." Then slip away.

3) The Past: This one is more for beginners. Basically dress in period clothing (preferably Victorian era) and stagger around amazed at everything. Since the culture's set in place already, you have more of a template to work off of. Some pointers:
• Airplanes are terrifying. Also, carry on conversations with televisions for a while.
• Discover and become obsessed with one trivial aspect of technology, like automatic grocery doors. Stay there for hours playing with it.
• Be generally terrified of people who are dressed immodestly compared to your era. Tattoos and shorts on women are especially scary.

Stay in character and try to fit in. Never admit you're a time traveler, and make really, really bad attempts at keeping a low profile. Naturally, the dystopian future has a little more leeway.

So, who else fancies the idea of running into the local McDonalds and yelling "Where am I? What year is this? Who's the President?" while in a tattered spacesuit?

Ditto.

In which case, a trip to Argos to requisite a sonic screwdriver or a laser screwdiver if you plan on playing the Master, in which you must love tellytubbies and constantly play I Can't Decide. Also, be weary of every stone statue you encounter.

I stumbled upon this a few weeks back, and I have to say, me and a few friends have done it before ^^

We asked some bloke reading the paper what year it was, and then we all looked at each other horrified and ran off. Was a fun time =D

I could be cheap and dress like normal, but pretend I'm from the 90's and listen to Backstreet Boys on a Discman.

Couldn't that be seen as merely retro? (Xept for the BSB-bit) You could also play any techno you (dis)like.
Then you should probably get yourself a very old mobile phone (THE BRICK) and keep saying that this is the State of the Art model, or something.

And pretend to be confused when talking about George Bush, depending on which end of the nineties you'll be from.

I'd love to be dystopic. Ask any innocent/kind looking person: "How did you get the sea up there?"

I once had a phone that would qualify as one used by a time traveller. Hand-me-down.

Eh, nerds don't really change much. It'd be more fun if I had a mentor who could help me act like they did in the 70's...

Makes me think, it'd be cool to welcome a time traveller from earlier on in the 20th century and show them around. I actually had an idea for a something where a guy meets a bunch of time travelling kids from various decades and they get up to stuff.

Hm, that could be a decent comedy series. Someone call Nick.

Me! Me!

And let's face it, It's a look I can pull off. All I need is an umbrella and question marks sewed into my lapels and my costume will be complete.

*thirty years later*

"Hello?"
"Hey. So what's with this Dirty Chicken toy that was handed to me when I was seventeen?"
"...You're not one of Cathy's friend's are you? You sound drunk enough..."

Dressing Like A Time Traveller sounds like fun. I think I should try and get a few friends in on this and then go to town!

If anyone goes with a 12 Monkeys storyline, then you are very hardcore and deserve all the praise I can give you. But I might also consider acting like I'm from ‘95 and just chew everybody's ear off about Friends and then start sobbing when I "find out" what happened.

The first couple were a bit chubby, I think. Old guys anyway.

William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton weren't fat, the only one who was a bit on the large side, in my rekonning, was Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor. Hence my calling dibs on his look.

Alright.

Hmm, Tom Baker is the most famous one but also has probably the hardest costume to emulate...

I could always try those snazzy cricket whites that the 5th Doctor wore. I could do a pretty good Christopher Eccleston too.

Geek chic ain't really my thing though, so that leaves the 10th out.

I'm more in tune with McGann's Byron look. Would love to give Pertwee a go though. And Tom Baker's last costume, with the really long funky red overcoat.

I find it sad that every fucker and his mum is going as Doctor Who.

What, no Bill and Ted? There may be the possibility of some adventures of one kind or another, and I beleve they may in fact turn out to be excellent.

Or some kind of journey, which may or may not border on the bogus. It's a double edged sword.

Hey, I'm game for Doc Brown.

Fine, I'll get a pink skateboard and go Marty McFly.

I don't have the money for a DeLorean... unless I bug Matthew Reilly.
