Not true, we just have tools and a longer life span due to these tools, most creatures have an inert danger sense that we do not have, they are highly intelligent and highly instinctual, as such, our only proof of superioty in that respect is indeed that we have tools to fight. In a fist fight, Lion vs Man, my moneys on the lion. |

I was sort of talking in a more moral sense. It just doesn't make sense to put a food source above us just because it's a food source. We eat the cow, the cow does not eat us. |

Perhaps in primality, when we as humans were much like the animals ourselves were we still not superior, rather, equal. Morality is in a sense not formally considered an aspect of survival but in a sense it really is. One may see wild animals as brutal, savage beasts, but take a look at parts of humanity. Are we worse? Are we better? Are we anymore civilised even as we speak from highly developed brains? |

@Rellik: And we created these tools due to having a better brain. And humans do have such instincts. However, due to the idle tendencies most humans opt to have, these instincts tend to dull. Some people do try to sharpen these instincts ad succeed rather well. And yes, those tools show how we are superior, since we created them with our best weapon. Our mind. Why would a man get into a fist fight with a lion anyway? That's a losing battle simply because our major weapon isn't being used effectively. If said human came along with a gun, crafted due to a brain, the lion would lose. It's all about favourable odds. @Major: I wasn't aware animals had morals. |

Although dolphins and even cats, have been proven to have higher brain capacity then most humans, as such, our brain functions also do not raise to that level of superioty, it is simple, man kind kills to eat, so do animals. |

The key to our tools is the simple evolutionary step of the oposable thumb, not our brains, dolphins and cats have been proven to have more highly developed cognative functions then humans. They just don't have the apendages to make best use of them. |

No, it was standing on our own two feet, instead of four. Which lead to playing with things. Which lead to improved brain power. And if those animals have, I would like to see a source. For, as far as I have seen, they haven't. |

I have it. It's called "paying attention to your surroundings," and it is common in creatures who don't think that they're safe just because they see no immediate danger.
So are we.
I don't gamble, but I'd cheer for the Lion, because anybody stupid enough to travel through Africa without a gun deserves whatever he gets. However, there was a case where a man punched a lion in the mouth, and the lion choked to death on his hand. We are sentient and Sapient Hominids. nothing more. does this make us equal to all the other animals? yes. Does this mean we should stop having pets and eating other animals? fuck no.
They don't. We do, however. which is the root of this whole "Animal Rights" movement.
Yeah, Dolphins don't even have thumbs. what good is intelligence when you haven't the ability to fully make use of it? What good is the ability to make full use of intelligence when you have none yourself? |

That, and a trained hightened sense of awareness and/or mild paranoia. I tend to walk along the street with both a T-HSA and actually paying attention.
I have a book somewhere that teaches you how to handle most vicious wild animals. That's one of the given examples. No, we're not equal. Just as a shark isn't equal to a fish, apart from in the eyes of a yet superior predator. |

Yes, but there's a big difference between gouging a llama's eyes out for fun and keeping a llama as a pet. PETA sees these both as evil acts, anyone who wasn't an idiot or a sick fuck would see only one of them as an evil act. |

I know! I mean, keeping a llama as a pet.... Really though, PETA, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth. They all have one thing in common. Their members that are most publicised are utter morons. |

That doesn't necessarily ensure our superiority. What does is the other point you mentioned, our ability to domesticate animals. In addition to this is our mental capacity. Whilst we may not have 'more' intelligence, and our instincts are not as good as many other animals, we have a heightened awareness of our surroundings, and, more importantly, an awareness of ourselves and our very existence. Animals don't have this, or at least there is absolutely no evidence of it. |

I like the way the idea that we are superior to animals has been countered with an argument that boils down to "might makes right". In which case, soldiers and tournament fighters should rule our society. Bah. |

The very fact that PETA exists actually shows humans are superior. After all, if PETA's beliefs were true, surely animals would try to 'revolt' against their human oppressers? The fact that humans are needed to 'defend' animals surely reveals our inherent superiority? Actually, this is kind of pointless, as we all agree with each other! |

Sad, but true. Everyone on here agrees that PETA is just a bunch of collected stupidity that show humans are superior due to their having to defend animals. So basically everything that has been said or could be said, already has been said. |

Humanity's superiority lies in just one simple appendage - the opposable thumb. That humble mutant of evolution inspired our ability to walk upright, our growing brain/bodymass ratios, and become inventive enough to defend ourselves by throwing our toxic waste at predators. So next time you see a hitchhiker with his thumb out, remember it was animals like him that spawned Humanity as we know it today. |

You know, I've seen some PETA-bashing in webcomics such as Sluggy Freelance and even PVP Online. Oh, and especially the Pet Professional. At first, I wondered if the portrayals of the PETA in those were over-exaggerations. Now, I'm starting to think that they might not be so far from the truth after all... In fact, now I'm starting to think that maybe the PETA are just a bunch of idiots who wanted to bitch and moan about something in front of everyone and chose animals for that purpose. Anyone else think that maybe the PETA think some animals deserve to live just because they meet the typical human definition of "cute"? Nature and evolution don't have the word "cute" in mind... Hey, speaking of stupid people who think nature is beautiful but don't understand it... anyone else ever read that book by Gary Larson? "There's a Hair in my Dirt"? |
