I was just wondering what people thought about the recent resignation of Mark Oaten. For those who don't know, he was the Home Affairs spokeman for the Lib Dems (Britiains 3rd biggest political party), but had to resign this weekend after the News of the World revealed he had an affair with a rentboy two years ago. Oaten has placed a large emphasis on family values, so this obviously was a major problem for him. I suppose its hardly surprising or orginal for politicians to be involved in some sort of scandal. But why the hell does this stuff have to happen to the Lib Dems right now. I'm sick and tired of no one taking us seriously, when we now represent 20% of the voting public, and continue to be the only party willing to actually stand up to New Labour, to go against policies like ID cards and the war on Iraq. We work fucking tired, and then suddenly shit like this happens and we're back to square one. I already have a deep loathing of tabloid newspapers. The Daily Mail remains at number one spot, but I can't see why the News of the World feels that this classifies as news. They give journalists a bad news, and whilst decent ones are working away uncovering things like the use of White Phosphorous in Iraq or analysing the new education reforms. No, lets print the embarrassing sex life of people, you know, just for a fucking laugh. What the hell purpose does this shitrag of a paper serve. <sighs> Sorry had to get that rant out of the system. The Lib Dem leader is going to have a right state to sort out when he gets in. I hope he's up to the job. |

Dude, as you said, he places huge emphasis on family values and yet had an affair. Sorry, but if you're a politician, especially an important one, you know you're going to be under public scrutiny. It's to be expected, so if anyone is to blame it's his own fault. As for being the "only ones" against the Iraq conflict, the ID cards, that's utter bullshit. The Tories AFAIK have been against ID cards, as has most of New Labour, and both parties were split in two over Iraq. The LibDems are only in third place because the majority of people don't agree with most of their policies... Like Europe, which was the outstanding factor as to why I didn't vote for them. |

And the News of the World is by no means a decent newspaper. It's barely better than the Sun, and about on the same level as the Mirror. |

http://www.publicwhip.org.uk If you ever want to know how MPs have voted, this site keeps track of all voting records. I was wrong about ID cards, as all Tories, Lib Dems and alot of Labour MPs were against it. However, the war in Iraq, whilst it did split Labour, was backed by all but two Tory MPs (all Lib Dems were against). I don't want to argue about the war, but I question the purpose of an 'official' opposition party if they are going to support such a controversial issue. Europe though, that is a fair point. I'm pro-Europe (you probably guessed) but that will definitely lose us alot of votes. Still, it's nice to have one party who is pro-Europe (Blair's stance on Europe is a joke, as he bends ovr backwards to satisfy both sides and gets nowhere). And the News of the World is a shit paper, but unfortunately it has a large readership who take it seriously. |

Because the whole point of politicians is to do what is best for the country, at least in theory. Disagreeing with everything the ruling party does for the sake of disagreeing only slows down government and creates further red-tape. |

That may be so, but the Tories could have at least bothered to question Blair's decisions first, rather than just blindly following. When a controversial decision (such as going to war) is made by the Government, the opposition is supposed to at least question them, as it is one of only a few checks on the Government's power. Had the Government then produced a good argument, and the Tories had supported them after that, it would have been acceptable. But instead they meekly fell into line, thus allowing us to go to war on the flimsiest of pretexts. I do not think the opposition should purposefully stop the Government at every turn, but they should at least question them before doing so. |
