Bungie's Inspiration?; Bungie games and Aliens

As you can probally tell, I'm new on this fourum and I'm not sure wether this has been brought up in another topic yet.

Recently I was watching the moive Aliens (awesome movie, watch it if you haven't seen it before) and saw many, many things that reminded me of Halo and Halo 2. There were actually places that I could have sworn that I was watching a movie about Halo. Here are a few of them.

The Sargeant : This guy was a tough, foul-mouthed, and millitary minded African-American guy, kinda like Johnson from the Halo games. Heck, this guy even looked like Johnson.

The landing ships : Pelicans, nuff said.

The guns : The main weapon used in the movie were their assault rifles, burst guns and gredade launchers all in one, in a topic I just saw about the Marathon games I belive I saw this same gun mentioned.

I'm pretty sure there were other similaritys but I can't really remember them at the moment.

Maybe I'm just confusing commonly used sci-fi elements for the things in this movie, but I'm pretty sure this is where Bungie got their inspiration for many elements in their games.

Its pretty much standard fare for any sci-fi related media actually.

Most recent sci-fi aims for a 'realistic' feel just because the modern audience doesn't buy into Star Trek-esque 'science fantasy' as much anymore.

This is why more and more sci-fi is either taking place in a near modern setting, or maintaining settings with things that directly tie in to the real world. I mean, if you just look at the weapons and vehicles in both Aliens (which really is what got this trend going) and Halo, a lot of the human tech looks very similar to things we can make nowadays.

So basically, Halo wasn't so much 'inspired' by Aliens as it's in the same sub-category of sci-fi.

Ah, like I said, I was probally just confused. I was mainly just saying that Bungie may gotten ideas for designs and all that from the movie, because there are so many different approaches they could have taken to Johnson's character and the pelicans but they took one that was very close to the things in Aliens. I'm probally wrong though.

Prob explain why Enterprise was cancelled, and Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis are raking in the stats and money.

Aliens (one of my all time favs)

-is a post-modernity sci fi. which means it falls under the same catagory as Blade Runner, Terminator, total recall and so on. Its a theory that despite our success with technology man still is and will always be a idiot who will destroy and make life horrible for him self.

(Became huge in sci fi novels in the late 1960s and then in sci fi films during the 1980s)

The design of the marines and weapons in aliens was so successful and popular because unlike other sci fis the director james cameron (good reason to love canada, despite titanic) wanted to create and i quote "Vietnam in space" Hence all the weapons had to be designed for primarily practical use rather then being impressive. Hence Dropships which worked like the choppers from vietnam and weapons which punched big ass holes. THis was massivley different from previous sci fi's such as star trek and star wars which made up and explained bullshit to excuse the use of fantastical effects and weapons.

So the copy of Aliens weapon and ship design is not uncommon because it is one of the best representations of military life and battle in a science fiction setting. Watching a gun battle in star wars and str trek always makes a person with half the military knowledge of a swiss cringe because it is so very much unpractical. Unlike Aliens which is very much believable.

And when the main focus in Halo is...combat in a science fiction setting, then the aliens influence are very hard to deny.

But in Halo 2 it is clear they move away from aliens influence and took in more modern military weapons in the games design with the changing of the assault rifle (more like a rifle and less like a machine gun).

You know, I watched Alien vs. Pretador the other day, and the storyline (however different) reminded me of Halo and StarCraft. You've got the humans, or Terran who are always stuck in the middle of bigger things. You got the Aliens, flood, and Zerg a parisitical life form that just goes arounds and kills everything. And you also have the Predators, Elites, and Protoss, who represent the all powerfull Alien Race that has technology far supirior than the humans.

And as for where Bungie gets it's design for Aliens... Look at the Predator and Elites. They each have four mandibles....

99% of all decent sci fi is derived from the first two alien films because they set the par when it came to the "dear god that looks fucking amazing" factor ie. it looks belivible and real and you know no-one is invicible

except in starcraft they were 3 sides in a huge war. in AVP the aliens are turned into nothing less then dogs used as a stupid ritual for the predators...

and secondly...both halo and starcraft have better writers then paul anderson...who is only lucky that there is a worse director then him (Uwe boll.) AvP was a piece of shit...to paraphrase bill hicks. horrible script, bugged plot, crap fight scenes, and ignores totally to what the fans wanted.

paul anderson the worse thing to come out of england since the torie party.

and just to put a over artsy and scary dent in your alien comparison to the flood and the zerg, the original alien designed by H.R Gigar was to represent mans fear of being fucked by a woman. I'm not fucking kidding. The term to describe the alien design is Vagina Dentate. Which translates to pussy with teeth, and of course in aliens we get the mother in law with teeth (queen). Hence unlike most other horror films and series the alien franchise has always had a large number of male victims rather then female. In comparison the predator is penis jealousy...its more of a man then you hence it kills you. hence the whole honour element and that it took a certain austrian body builder to kill him.

note this was the theory behind the original films.

Aliens (one of my all time favs)

Aliens is till one of my all time favs too, though mid in the mid 80s it still holds up well and better than alot of more modern SCI Fi movies today, special effects and story wise.

i really hope Cameron would do another one but i have heard Ridly Scott might be interested in doing another Alien movie. it would be interesting if either two could do a Halo movie.

yes giger is a loon...and i have no intention of being a surrealist artist like him...i study film though so surprisingly enough the alien films are the most common films to show up in my course.

AW.
*rumour*
Cameron did approach 20th century fox about doing another alien film. the deal was cameron would write it and ridley scott would direct it. But their demands were that no AVP film be made and since paul w.s anderson offered to make one so cheaply...FOX made the wrong decision.

*FACT*

for those manga fans he is a huge fan of battle angel alita (which i am too) and has gained the rights to make the battle angel film...which will also be pretty fucking cool.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437086/

*FACT*

Halo is being made into a movie...currently the writer of 28 days later is attempting a script for it and it is doing to runs in search of funding, director and cast.

Given the fact that most recent game-tied movies were either poor or pretty average. Its more than likely. And thats not before it doesnt get mutliated to the director and holywoods liking. I dread to see what the finished product of the Doom movie after what I read they changed.

Uwe boll is currently doing two other movie tie ins...bloodrayne and hunter: the reckoning...and he cant afford halo anyway.

of course 28 days later didnt suck...but its only the writer they have onboard (and in fairness the script is not 28 days later strongest point) the rest of the crew is unannounced.

paul anderson is doing the driver film.

28 days later was an amazing film. British films are so good when it comes to all round entertainment.

Not sure whether 28 days later was good in perspective of the writing or the directing though
