I don't think there's a best console, sincerily. Simply because I care about the gaming library, not the console itself, altho there are things that I prefer in some consoles (mainly the 4 controller slots) and stuff.

If I had to chose, I'd go for DreamCast. Simply because it's the console I had games that made me happy, alot.

There is no "best console" as everyone has their own preferences.

My personal favourite is the Xbox. It features most of the types of games I like and has a good choice, not as good as the PS2 but a better ratio of good games. I also like the GC for some games, but Jesus, could they possibly release less? Or perhaps hope that maybe more than 2 developers (Capcom and Konami) aside from Nintendo make good games for it.

Now if I get ANY FUCKING FLAMEWARS from fanboys of any console you guys can considere yourselves put on a temp ban. Ang give reasons why you like your consoles. "Just because its sega and its great" is not a good reason. And to be even more pedantic theres never been a console called "The Sega".

There is no 'best' console simply because they've all got different strengths and weaknesses.

For example, the PS2 has the largest selection of games, and is really the only place to go for decent RPGs (I don't mean the FF series, but just that in general all the good console-style RPGs end up on the PS2).

Gamecube is a hugely underused piece of equipment, but when someone puts it through its paces it can do phenomenal work. Only real problem is the shortage of games by comparison to other consoles.

X-box... well, it definately has the best hardware on the market and some damn fine games, but I personally don't have one. Enough of the games for it come out on PC anyway that there's not really a point for me, since I have a decent gaming rig.

Out of the current 3, GCN.

This is because I feel it offers a great variety of top class games. Whereas the Xbox tends to focus on FPS, Racing and Online gaming, and the PS2 is the king of Traditional Eastern style RPG's.

Of all time it has to be the Dreamcast. There a LOT of quality for the Dreamcast and a lot of original titles. I'm still wondering why Powerstone hasn't had a sequel yet.

I'm more of a PC gamer myself, but my favourite console has to be the Megadrive, alot of the games kept me hooked and I actually enjoyed playing them.

Of the current consoles the only one I own is the Gamecube, but terrible release schedules have pretty much killed that and I've found most of the games for it droll and repetitive. I've not properly played either the PS2 or X-box so I can't fairly comment on them.

Hell no. sunshine was crap.

What I mean is it has...

Great racing games - F-zero GX
Great RPG's - Skies of Arcadia Legends, Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario 2
Unique FPS - Metroid Prime (no adventure comments please)
Great Survival Horror - Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness
Unique fighters - Super Smash Bros Melee

And Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Donkey Konga/Jungle Beat, and Zelda which are unique also.

In summary, it has a lot of titles that span loads of different genres. Compared to the Xbox which is mostly FPS and the PS2 which is mostly RPG's.

The PS2 library is a bit large to be considered 'mostly RPGs'.
What it -is-, is mostly full of crap, because - like it's predecessor - loads of people produce quick, low-quality games for the thing, expecting them to sell merely through the platforms popularity,

One game.
Two games.
Metorid isn't an FPS. It's a game that's in first person, and you shoot, but so is Rogue Squardon if you get the camera right.
Two games.
One game.

Six games? Whup-de-shit.

Pikmin, from what I've played, resembles an RTS. Animal Crossing I've yet to touch on the account it took so long to get here I doubt I'll ever bother. Donkey Konga is original, so I give it that, but whether it amuses after the novelty wears off is beyond me. And Zelda? Original? Hah.

Project Gotham Racing.
Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, Jade Empire.
Halo 2.
Project Zero 2: Crimson Butterfly, Silent Hill 2: Inner Fears.
Dead or Alive Ultimate.

Then, for the more outstanding games...
MechAssault, Crimson Skies, Burnout 3, Mercenaries...

Saying the X-Box is just FPS' is just as accurate as saying the Gamecube is just kiddies platformers. It is to a degree, but it goes beyond that.

right now the best console is probaly X-box because it does what it says it will play decent games with pissing around looking for the right memory card

but the PS2 doed have Firewarrior and the FF seris for you interactive stoiry lovers (FF is not an RPG as you do not accept a role you wander around interacting with the stroy which will unfold one way no matter what you do ) so having both is probaly the best option

Gotta say for current games, Xbox.

The online play is second to none, and it has a huge range of GOOD games. As Silv mentioned, PS2 does have a higher ratio of crap ones.

Halo series, Steel Battalion (GODLY!), Mechassault series, Fable and tons of others, it easily has my fav choice of games.

Fav of all time. Megadrive undoubtedly.

I'll change my reason, I like the games on that console ( mega drive, sega was a make) and I like the fact that it doesn't have any loading time because it doesn't use discs.

So I make sure not to mention any multi format titles (with the exception of resident evil, but the the REmake and Zero are still exclusive), yet you put Burnout 3, project zero 2 and Silent hill 2 as Xbox games. Did you forget about the PS2 Versions?

In that case add Viewtiful Joe and Killer 7 to the GCN list

Also I didn't say Zelda was original, I said it was unique. Many have tried to immitate but failed (Starfox Adventures).

While there are a few others, can you not say the list of wanted titles/titles that recently came out isn't mostly FPS? Halo 2, Doom 3, Half-life 2, Perfect Dark Zero and Timesplitters 3 (if we're not talking about exclusives)

And how can you not say the majority of top titles for the PS2 are RPG's? Sure there's the odd exception, Ico, Gregory Horror show and GTA (if we're not talking about exlusives), but the majority of class exclusive PS2 games are RPG's or Tactical RPG's.

FFX, FFX-2, Wild Arms 3, Star Ocean 3, Disgaea & Phantom brave, .hack.

Note, I was talking about the class games not all the games, and I used the disclaimer "mostly" instead of "just".

Taking apart your suggestions. PGR is crap, took the best bits out of MS-R and made it as slow as hell. Fable I hear is far too short and Dead of Alive Ultimate is far from unique. It's two old games given an online option.

How can you not say the majority of top titles for the PS2 are RPG's?

How can you say the majority of "top" GC games aren't kiddy platformers? And how can you call any of them "unique"? Sunshine, Heroes, Zelda, Melee... Basically same shit in shinier packages.

Well first of Heroes isn't GCN exclusive.

Sunshine was lame. But I'll give you that one.

Zelda wasn't kiddy, having Cel-Shading doesn't make something kiddy, neither does not having semi naked girls, swearing and a lot of blood. Plus it's not a platformer. How can you call something a platformer if it doesn't have a Jump button?

Melee is a grey area in terms of age. Again I would say it was for everyone, like Zelda. It's certainly not a platformer, it's a beat-em up. And tell me a game that's like SSBM before you say it's not unique. The closest you get is Street fighter and the Vs series, and even then they're more traditional KO 1 vs 1 fights. Compared to Melee which has up to 4 people fighting and it about hitting people off the screen.

Do not confuse kiddy games with games for everyone. Want an example of the first, try Puyo Pop Fever or Billy Hatcher (which would've been a better example to use)

Super Smash Bros. Melee is unique, but it's the whole concept of item pick/throw, blended in a 2d fighting style featuring characters from several Nintendo (and company) games. The closest you have is Power Stone 2, but seeing that it's a full 3d game things quite change.

Besides, if you're counting the unique by the amount of characters on screen, it's not, seeing that the first fighting game (if I'm not mistaken) was a YuYu Hakusho for Genesis (By Treasure, Japan only).
SSBM is a blend of fighter with, somehow, a party game (for it has a good amount of game types, yet it all resumes to fighting)

And on the whole game type subject, PS2 is known for the rpgs, for it's the majority of people mentioning them, and a good portion is Final Fantasy fanatics, yet there are others, and way better, games of that type. I find it a general console, tho.
PS2 has a good portion of Surival Horror, Platforms/Action and others, altho they aren't exclusives, yet they are still there.
Still, remarkable games like Devil May Cry, Ico, Katamari Damacy, Gran Turismo and WipeOut (and others that come up once in a while) build up the good list of non-rpg games.

I have no knoledge on either XBox or GCN (I don't own either), but Nintendo usually comes up with kiddy-esce gaming libraries for their most known stuff are usually for younger gamers (altho there is a pretty big amount of people playing them, which are adults).
One of their highest fevers is the Pokémon industry, for example. And they sold their most adult game ever, Conker (altho it was only in Bad Fur Day, since Conker was also a kiddy character).

Let me put it this way. Would you define Finding Nemo and Toy Story as "Kiddy movies"? After all they don't look like more mature movies, they don't have any mature themes, If anything their target audience is kids.

Yet Adults enjoy them as much as kids do. That's the movie equivalent of something that's for everyone not just for kids. Those nintendo franchises you keep talking about are the gaming equivalent.

In saying that Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness and the Resident Evil series are hardly aimed at kids.

I didn't say 'top titles'. I said 'library'. As in all of them.
There's a far bigger range of PS2 games than just the RPG's. Both in it's exclusives, and in the multi-platform stuff.

To call all of that RPGs is foolish.

Erm... The best console for me is Xbox. Since it has a lot of memories (50,000) and can copy music into it.:D

Second is Gamecube, for certain games such as SSBM, the Resident Evil series and the Sonic series also.

Let's talk hardware, since I cannae be arsed arguing about games right now.

Does anybody else dislike the PS2 control as much as I do? I cannot for the life of me figure out how best to hold that thing and access all the buttons/sticks. I often end up pressing the shoulder buttons with my middle fingers, for some reason. I like the Xbox controller better. The original big Xbox controller. I've used the S-type only once or twice, and while it's better than the old one, the button placement is still slightly iffy.

Cube controller > all.

Yes. Possibly more-so.
Except for Mortal Kombat, where the overriding need of the otherwise unnessecery D-pad comes into play.

Indeed, Cube controller > all.

I'm still wondering the PS2 controller has the Analogue stick in the wrong place. If only the D-pad would switch places with the left analogue stick. As for the shoulders, I only use the one finger for each side. It's too uncomfortable to have a finger over each.

I don't prefer either model of the Xbox controller. The normal one fits quite well in my hands, and strangely so does S. Though I'm not a fan of where the start button is on S.

I love Wavebirds, but buying batteries is extremely annoying. The next system should have wavebirds with a rechargeable battery. In fact all three of the new systems should have wireless controllers.

The Xbox has the best build quality. Both my Gamecube and my PS2 have broke down. I got a new cube for free from Nintendo when I sent mine in to get fixed. My PS2 only broke down recently, but I can still play on my brothers new PStwo. When I get some money I'll replace it.

I love the Xbox Hard drive but I hate that it doesn't have a reset button.
I love the GCN's Gameboy player upgrade
I love the Eyetoy, but hate the Blue disk problem (which is really annoying when you want to play Sega Superstars).
