bit of old news but didnt see any mention of it here. Started playing the two shenmues again and i got curious to what happened to the third game (which was rumoured to have been canned since 2003) a quick search showed this: http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/shen...e_preview.shtml two things caught me on this. one...is the trailer for it. which worries me because it seems to have stuffed the original shenmue concepts up its own arse. (more on this in rant) two...Sega seems to be out for blood in getting a corner in the market of mmorpgs. They are also developing matrix online and have the first handheld mmorpg on the n-gage with pocket kingdoms. They were (before it was canned) invovled in the warhammer mmorpg. Not to mention phantasy star online. Now my rant: I love the shenmue games. Yes they can be horribly tedious at points but the story and characters were amazing and the combination of beat em up and rpg worked brilliantly. My main complaints was that you never got enough chances to show off the skills you learned. And admittadly the early part of shenmue 2 when you had to work to keep your room (or so i thought before i learned he just put it on a bill) anyway when i first saw mention of a online shenmue game. I pictured the worlds first mmorpg beat em up. Go into the world and take quests under different masters of martial arts and develop your own style of fighting (in shenmue you could change what move some of the combinations tweaking it to your own fight style. expand on this for mmorpg). Visions of a mmorpg which was based in a real world system. Requiring you did a small part time job (or gambled or street fought) to pay rent and then going off on quests and deciding whether to stick to your masters strict code or become a thug (or better work for lan di). It could be the MMORPG all those who couldnt stand elves and jedis were waiting for. Where you didnt have to look up your mana, force or psi powers, you looked up how strong you were. And even better it would be suited for a console release cause everybody knows beat em ups work better on consoles. I saw they ardvertised a trailer on the website so i downloaded it. A FMV which seemed similar to the deus ex 2 intro in style. Its Lan Di and all the agent extra's from the matrix versus Ryo on his own on a roof top. O...K. Hong Kong no longer looks like the dirty 1980s version from shenmue 2. Its all clean and hi tech, then all your self made characters are introduced...in a very matrix fashion (slight gritting of the teeth here) diving in at the last moment to save ryo, another extra...this time from the final fantasy games stands up (teeth break here). A large number of players face of against lan di and his goons. Then they all decide to perform the ?kameha? attack from dragon ball z. (lower jaw pierces skull here) HUGE EXPLOSION...and SHENMUE ONLINE APPEARS. i sit there shocked. Instead of being unique in the mmorpg scene shenmue online now seems to be some bizarre offspring of final fantasy and the matrix. to make matters worse the system (once i read up on it) is very typical. 3 classes, close range fist fighters, weapon specialists, and magic users of some kind. how annoyingly predictable. The relevence to the original shenmue's concept seems to go only as far as the name. The original shenmue was the *virtua fighter RPG* not some stupid rpg with dragonball z style power moves and big explosions. I WANT BONE CRUNCHING KNEE CAPPING STREET VIOLENCE. I WANT LEVEL 20 TELLING ME I CAN NOW BREAK PEOPLES NECKS...NOT FIREBALLS FROM MY ANUS...I CAN DO THAT IN REAL LIFE WITH TEN PINTS OF VODKA 2 TINS OF BEANS AND A LIGHTER! what i cant do is kill someone with my little finger...but i would like to. When MMORPGS first appeared I thought the idea was amazing. This great chance for players to create their own stories and adventures. But now since the success of everquest and World of Warcraft game designers seem to to think there is a set formula to a massive multiplayer and are cautious to step outside the box. Oh how my blood boils, mmorpgs should offer EACH a unique experiance and freedoms, not all be about leveling up and killing the same monster over and over for that one elusive super sword/gun/flavoured condom. I wanted to get into WOW, everyone told me it is so amazing, but i read up on it and it just looks like to me (and i could be wrong) a really well polished and crafted product of these rules. I wanted it to be something i could only ever find in the warcraft universe. But what i am asking is impossible. the reason being that in any other form mmo games would be unbalanced or unworkable with 1000 of players. Maybe. But could someone at least try. I commend the following two groups. ww2online and Engima: Rising Tide. At least they are being different. They are not without their faults. But at least they are unique. So in conclusion, Shenmue which tried its most to be a wholly unique game in a flood of mass produced crap (1999...the rise of EA) has castrated itself into becoming a cliched MMORPG. Blitz's top 3 advice for MMO's FOR SEGA LICENCES number 3: ALL OF SEGA'S RACING GAMES in a persistent world: Make money buy and tune your cars and then drive them wrecklessly in SEGA RALLY, or DAYTONA USA, or challange a friend cross america in a OUTRUN race. choose whether to be a gran turismo style perfectinist, or a sega arcade driver (pay other players to tune your car) NUMBER 2: Sonic the hedgehog: A MMO game which is not complicated, which has an already creative fan base and is *god forbide* a platformer and therefore fast and fun...cool. NUMBER 1: PANZER DRAGOON. THE best and imaginative world sega ever came up with. A flight simulator AND RPG. Raise your own dragon or worm creature thing or other flying beast. Or command imperial air ships. Add in exploring imperial cities, lost technology and mutated jungles. Sega this is a winner! goodnight -the comments of this rant are the comments of me, any comments which you felt were unfair or inaccurate please do not be afraid to tell me if it is in anyway sensible i will accept it or debate it. If it is a comment of *U SUC U N00B pwned by lvl 100* then please take a rusty spoon gouge your eyeballs out and let the nearest four legged beast skullf*ck you. thank you. |

The fanbase are bad enough merely having to listen to them on the internet. Having to actually play with them? That's one of my many ideas of hell. |

My respect for you just increased by 25%. I fucking LOVED the Panzer Dragoons, and Orta was a step in the right direction (But also a step backwards as well). Unfortunately, I cannot see an on-rails engine working online, so it would have to be more RPG-based. With the current plotline of Jean Jacques Lundi (Panzer Zwei, it was prequel, remember), Kyle Fluge (Or is it Keil? Panzer 1)), Edge (Saga) and Orta (...Orta) being dragon riders, the plotline would have to be screwed up greatly (a'la Shenmue), or it could be a side-story. |

well i was thinking i have 2 choices. Either take the plunge and go to the ancient civilisation itself and have the game set around the verge of its death (hell we could after a year or 2 cause the collapse) This will allow many dragon riders and for players to play as drones. Or set it after ORTA. Allow loads of creatures,,,which are similar to the dragons but not exactly the drgaons (Like those clones in orta) and have it that ONLY 2 PLAYERS every 3 or 4 months get chosen randomly to be the riders of the blue and black dragons and they are super powerfull BUT...the blue HAS to kill the black and the black if he dies looses the dragon and it goes to another player in another 4 months or so. You can create your own panzer dragoon story with the player of the black rider alligning with one of the imperial factions and unlocking one of the super weapons (Tower...Ship...Cradle etc) and the blue has to allign with another faction to destroy it and the black.
taking this from a buisness perspective. Sega wouldnt really care if the fans are muppets there's just alot of them who keep creating their own *variations* on the sonic characters and the mutlinational buisness tycoon inside me is screaming PROFIT!!!!! i agree the hundreds of shadow clones will drive me insane. (personnally i want a nack variation) |

The ancients, that's a good one, however I would go for a Form changing system (Saga's, NOT Orta's, only with way more depth.) (BTW, OutRun is already online) |

yes outrun has mutliplayer functions...but not a massive multiplayer design. form changing system would be implemented. but would probably be more focused on how you take care of your creature (think tomogatchi with a big killing machine) |

Shenmue 3 won't be made, SEGA can't afford to make another one. I saw the trailer for Shenmue online ages ago. Not the way I would like to see it done either. A Sonic MMO game is screaming to be made. Just think of all the different characters Sonic fans have made and having the ability to create and play as them. A GTA MMO would be pretty cool as well, if they allowed you to play as the police or as a classic criminal. Though no doubt there would be too many criminals, not enough police. I would also like to see a MMO pokemon. Doubt they could pull it off effectively in full 3D, but a massive 2D pokemon wouldn't be a bad thing. |

And just on another note... Sonic Team, get off your asses, and do SOMETHING with the NiGHTS license! I don't care if you charge me $200 just to get the Christmas NiGHTS demo on my Xbox/Gamecube/DS/Amstrad, just give us something that doesn't screw with the originality that NiGHTS had!! ...Wait? Did I really just ask Sonic Team for that? Might as well ask Bush to sit down and have a nice cup of tea with Saddamm. Same likelyhood... |

Or have Moore own up that he's actually a Republican undercover to help generate right-wing support out in the colonies. :P No, Exu. They'd be called things like pSyChO32625643278 or Blazefox the Hedgebatkidna. Cinos would be quite beyond their ability. ;) |

Shenmue Online seems to be a crush on the game series, so I agree with the rant. Altho the story pretty much ends in Shenmue 2, the game shows enough potential for another game, not saying it should be a sequel, but a game featured in the same world, using it's unique gameplay. I still have a little hope on Shenmue Online, but the whole class thing is pretty much reason not to play it, altho many people would play it just because of that. But there are still things that could make it fun, who knows, Streets or Rage, Golden Axe and others in the Arcades where you would be able to play with other people, online. About Sonic and Panzer Dragoon MMO, it would work, but more likely SSX3 where you have a nice offline game where you power up your character(s) and then enter online to beat other people up. Panzer Dragoon, if MMO, would have a different gamplay (full 3d movement or whatever), which would ruin the game, alot. |

And would it really bother you that much if there were loads of Sonic recolours? You're still playing City of Heroes after saying it's full of Wolverine and other hero ripoffs. Doesn't make the ability to create and play as my own "Master hunter" any less appealing. |

Yes it would. Y'see, I like superheroes. I also understand quite a few are intentionally similar, but the vast majority are original creations. I also, deep down, think a superhero RPG could work. You can create a background easily enough, and hey, you have a cool superhero RPG world. Everyone's happy. A Sonic RPG, I feel, would never work. At all. Sonic was always about speed, up until someone had the genius idea of throwing in fishing and treasure hunting (And whoever did that deserves to be shot). RPG's are by nature slow, thinking games that require time, paitence and similar. Those are not elements that should be in a Sonic game. A Mario game, a Zelda game, a Metroid game even, but never a Sonic game. Also, MMORPG's tend to need a deepish world that you can interact with. This is probably where the concept falls flat, as the world Sonic Team have created is roughly as deep as a puddle. Also, the problem is, the games are about Sonic. An MMORPG would mean you would be unable to play as Sonic. This would render it down, basically, to a quasi-Japanese furry MMORPG. I think I'll pass, thanks. |

I think you're confusing a MMORPG with a MMO game. Imagine a 3D battle, where Action stages and bosses appear as small circles on an adventure field (just without the cursor pointing). You can team up with a powerful character/Fly character/Speed character and enter heroes style action stages as a team, or simply on your own. Levelling up has the same effect as it does in heroes just with 3 more levels. A bit closer to PSO than the MMORPG's out today. |

So a quasi-Japanese furry ripoff version of an already poor game? That I get to play with morons? Yeah. Bloody genius MH. Why aren't you working for Sonic Team already? I'm sure with they're looking for your kind of mind to help inflict whatever horrors they're cooking up against mankind. |

Not if the name spacing is reduced to seven ;). Seriously though, about 2 years ago, long before I came across what I use now, I wandered some of the Sonic community, and it was Cinos this, Cinos that, and Cinos the fucking other (all n00bs)! Fortunately it's mainly died down now, that's not to say it won't resurface. Oh, and ALL of them used a fucking inverted Sonic sprite. |
