Alright, picture this scenario: you are to slide into enemy territory and capture a North Korean official. The area is heavily guarded and you're a lone mercenary on foot. Do you roll in, guns blazing, or do you snipe out the guards from a distance and then slide in and make the capture? Perhaps you might not kill any of the guards at all and just roll in disguised in North Korean vehicle. However, as you face this dilemma, you notice something: a North Korean tank, sitting all by its lonesome with just a single gunner to defend it. Mercenaries is made for the people who see that tank, smile and say "That's my way in." It is a game where excessive destruction is not only essential sometimes, but a real perk for playing. Don't like the decor of that large building over there? A few well-placed C4 charges'll do the proper renovations. Being bothered by a large group of enemy soldiers in a small village? Call in an AC-130 strike and then watch a heavenly reign of fire, lead and mortar-fire turn the entire place to rubble. That's the type of versatiliy this game offers: a million-and-one ways to cause and maintain a state of chaos and havoc. Getting tired of that helicopter buzzing you? Sure, you could use your RPG to lay waste to it, but helicopters pack minguns and lots of rockets, which could make it an invaluable tool for you to blow shit up. Wait until it dips too far on an attack run and hijack it. Got tank problems? While an RPG can put a hurting on it, sometimes it's just better to ice the machine gunner, crawl up top, vacate the interior with a grenade and claim yourself some armor. Running out of ammo? Call in a supply drop from the Russian mafia. Need a quick lift? Call in a vehicle from the mafia... for a cost. Tanks aren't free, you know. But be careful who you piss off. The UN, the Chinese, the South Koreans and the Russian Mob are all in the area and they're all not too fond of each other. Keeping them all liking you while each faction sends you to undermine the others is a careful balancing act. But keep them all happy and you'll get the intel you need on your 52 bounties. Capture them alive and get a sweet sum. Kill them and you'll still get a sum, but only half as sweet. 'Playground Of Destruction' is an apt description. You are free, totally free, to destroy everything that you see. The missions are but a means to your destructive end. Nothing is safe from your wrath. In conclusion, Mercenaries kicks ass. My brother has it... seems interesting. Called in a vehicle and shot down the helicopter when it delivered it. It fell on him, though, so it was a bittersweet moment for him. Not for me, I just laughed at him. Also, the commercial itself is amusing. |
