Welcome to the Wherling Mentor Program master post!
You are likely here for one of three reasons. You are interested in becoming a mentor for wherlings, you are a potential wherling wondering what your character's life will be like after they bond, or you are just sharding curious what all this hullabaloo is about. So let's get started.
Wherling Mentors
The job of a mentor is to teach his or her student(s) everything they need to know in order to be an effective wherhandling pair that can contribute to the overall work whers do in protecting the Weyr, helping out in Threadfall, and hunting to help bolster the supplies (the numbers of handlers at Evergen have increased to the point where their hunting has actually made a good dent in the Weyr's supply and they don't have to press their surrounding Holds as hard for a tithe of meat and fish).
Mentors will be given a very strict curriculum of lessons to choose from and lesson outlines of all the things that need to be covered in those lessons. They are responsible for keeping track of their student's progress through wherlinghood and being available for their wherling outside of lessons as much as possible.
A mentor's responsibilities are as follows (both IC and OoC is mixed in this list):
- A mentor is to follow the curriculum set forth and have a minimum of 4 lessons for each of the wherlings in their charge. Each lesson should allow opportunity for 2 posts minimum by the student(s).
- A mentor is to give friendly reminders about lessons if and only if necessary. Notifying a wherling that their lesson is up should be enough, there should not have to be any badgering necessary. Wherlings are responsible for responding to their lesson in a timely manner as outlined by their candidate contract.
- A mentor is to give progress reports to the presiding admin (Geist) and at the end of the six months of wherlinghood decide if their wherling is fit to graduate. If all lessons have been posted in the required minimum number of times, they will automatically graduate OoCly, however if discussed by mentor and wherling, they may be 'held back' from doing certain things ICly for character development purposes.
- A mentor may have more than 4 lessons if they and their student have agreed to have more than the standard 4. Four is the minimum requirement for graduation.
- A mentor knows that any relationship over-reaching the bounds of student-teacher can be detrimental to the development of a wherling and his or her wher and will either swap students with another mentor or be responsible about the situation if one arises.
- A mentor is wholly responsible for the safety and growth of their student(s). If a severe accident occurs repeatedly, repercussions will happen ICly that may or may not result in demotion.
- A mentor is to keep lines of communication open with their wherlings. They will not pester or harass their students to post in lessons, but they will offer friendly reminders and give notifications when new lessons have been posted. It is ultimately the wherling's responsibility to make sure they post in lessons and the mentor's to respond. This will be considered when graduation time comes.
- A mentor must be able to uphold the requirement to post a MINIMUM of 4 lessons for their wherlings over the course of 6 months. If he or she has multiple students, these lessons can be combined to include each one at the same time, but each still must be able to post the 2 times minimum to consider the lesson participated in.
- A mentor understands that if they cannot uphold the responsibilities set out within their contract that they can and will be demoted back to their standard rank.
- A mentor understands that they can be demoted at any time due to numbers and interest and that if demotion occurs it is not personal.
- A mentor will not choose his or her students, they will be randomly assigned based on how many students other handlers have and/or the availability of the other mentors. Unless there is a severe discrepancy between players or characters, transfers cannot be made. If a transfer is to be made, reasons must be brought to the presiding admin (Geist) and it will either be granted or overruled depending on the case.
- A mentor must be fair and play their characters without personal bias against another player. This is more than just a rule for a mentor, but a general RP rule we advocate. If it is ever presumed that there is a personal OoC bias being applied to a character's interactions, a mentor may be stripped of their station.
- If at any time a mentor is unable to uphold their duties due to real life reasons or otherwise, they must PM Geist and ask to be taken off the mentor list and their students transferred. There is and will be no shame in stepping down as a mentor.
Wherling Pairs
A wherling knows what they're getting themselves into when they stand for a wher, but they don't know everything. Caring for and training their beast can be both a mentally and physically taxing process, especially if one doesn't know what they're doing. It is for that reason that they will be paired with a mentor before bonding to their wherling so that they have someone that can guide them through the hatching and bonding process as well as the training thereafter.
A wherling is responsible for showing up to his or her lessons on time and prepared. They will not be reminded like a group of Weyrlings with a lesson call. They must be responsible and mature enough to remember themselves. The player of a wherling must post at least twice in each lesson to have it counted for graduation and must post in a minimum of 4 lessons, whether they be one-on-one with their mentor or in a group with their mentor and that mentor's other students.
Most of a wherling's responsibilities are already defined in their candidate contract, but they are re-iterated here for the benefit of perusing candidates or those considering making a wher candidate.
A wherling's responsibilities are as follows (both IC and OoC are mixed):
- A wherling is responsible for posting in the lessons made by their mentor. Each lesson will be unique and offer different opportunities to RP, even have your character injured in the process if desired, or fail miserably and have character development happen.
- If a wherling does not post in a minimum of 4 lessons with a minimum of 2 posts per lesson, they will not graduate. It is ultimately the wherling's responsibility to make sure they post in lessons and the mentor's to respond. This will be considered when graduation time comes.
- A wherling is responsible for their wher and will be punished ICly if they act out too irrationally for any reason, as any Weyrling would.
- A wherling should keep lines of communication open with their mentor and express any concerns they have to them at any time. If the mentor is not available after several days, a wherling may PM the presiding admin (Geist) and have the situation looked at more closely if no response has come from the mentor.
- A wherling should direct any and all questions they may have about their training to their mentor, either ICly in a thread/lesson or OoCly in a PM if they have any concerns whatsoever about the development of their characters.
- A wherling is free to plot with their mentor for character altering events and it is up to the mentor to limit it to the realm of believability for the setting.
- A wherling understands that if they act out or break rules set forth by their mentor that there will be IC repercussions. It is important that they obey and adhere to their mentors and elder handlers for the sake of their wher and their reputation for the day they become part of the crew at large. If the wherling proves too disobedient, they will be switched with another mentor, and if the problem persists, they will be denied graduation both ICly and OoCly.
- A wherling is -always- busy. Whether it be chores or lessons, free time is hard to come by, just as it is for a Weyrling. Physical and mental training is almost always going on throughout wherlinghood, even if it is not RPed.
If you apply a character to be a mentor and are accepted, you will be given your own board in the wherling lessons forum in order to play out lessons with every student you are assigned. It is all right to have all of your students (if you have more than one) to participate in a group lesson and you may also have one-on-one lessons, but be clear with your students as to what you are asking of them.
A curriculum will be PMed to you, which you may post as a lesson plan if you wish in your lesson board. There will be several lessons from which you will choose 4 and each will be outlined to show what the Wherleader requires to be taught and it will be the responsibility of the mentor to make sure all these things are covered.
Wher candidates will be assigned to a mentor upon creation. All current wher candidates will be assigned to mentors as soon as there are a few accepted. Nothing is required to be done between mentor and candidate when candidacy is in place, however, the moment a character bonds, they are considered in training and will be expected to report to their lessons. That doesn't mean mentor and candidate cannot RP together! It is simply not a requirement. By all means, if mentor and candidate want to introduce themselves to each other or have a question/answer thread, that is completely allowed.
Things that have changed:
- There are now only 4 lessons required for graduation. A MINIMUM of 2 posts per lesson is required to consider the lesson complete. There are still 6 months to complete these lessons.
- A wher candidate will be placed under a mentor who will become their teacher when they bond.
- Once a candidate reaches 50 posts for eligibility, they could be given an egg at any time (they will be PMed to check their availability). They will then be told the color, name, personality, and origin of their bonded (ie, if the egg was brought to them or if they were sent to a named Hold to stand before a queen). Yes, you will still get an image of your baby along with everything else, it just will not be public as it was previously. You may also still hatch your baby yourself either with your mentor present or alone. One-shot threads in the wherhandlers' quarters are okay for this.
- Seasoned wherhandlers may apply to become mentors of wherlings. A mentor must be a bonded pair of AT LEAST 3 Turns in order to apply.

- Code:
-
[b]Name of applicant:[/b] [Wher and Handler]
[b]Age of applicant:[/b] [handler's age is the only one necessary]
[b]How many turns has the pair been bonded?[/b] [*note that only handlers bonded to their whers for 3 turns minimum may apply to be a mentor]
[b]Why would the pair be good mentors? What can they offer their students?[/b] [This may be answered ICly for flavor or OoCly.]
[b]Can you uphold all the responsibilities of being a wherling mentor?[/b] [OoCly, do you have the time required to post 4 lessons for each student and reply to their posts accordingly? Are you able to communicate via PM or other messenger in order to discuss things with the player of your students? Are you available for extra threads if your student desires them with his/her wherhandler?]
[b]What do you think your weaknesses will be as a mentor/player of a mentor character?[/b] [Be honest. If you are busy IRL, it will not stop you from being accepted as a wherling mentor, especially if you are an active poster, but it will help when knowing how many students to assign if you are accepted. It will keep us from overloading you unintentionally. Tell us ICly as well, what might your characters lack in terms of teaching their students? (can be answered ICly or OoCly)]
[b]Are you willing to adhere to the curriculum and lesson plans sent to you and keep track of your students' progress? (That also means reporting all dangerous occurrences and injuries acquired by both your student(s) and your mentor pair to Geist)[/b]
[b]If you find you cannot uphold all of your duties as a mentor, do you agree to step down gracefully and realize that there will be no hard feelings against you or your wherhandler?[/b]
