Officially Uncanon

Now! There are three un-canons: Ebonies, Peridots, Vermilions, and Silvers. Along with these come a few things we've gotta cover in relation to them. There are, however, a few quirks that must be touched upon. Let's go into more detail about all types of new dragons!

EBONY
Posted Image

The biggest males of the group, ebonies are as bronzes; large, proud, leaders. Characterized by their deep, almost abyss black, melanistic hides, the only way to tell of what they were "meant" to be is of a brilliant metallic bronze sheen that seems to glow under light. Personality traits that always seems to appear in specimens of this color is a terribly large urge to flirt (even as far as bronzes go), and the absolute addiction to causing mischief and mayhem.

+ Impresses only to Males.

VERMILION

Vermilion dragons are the happy medium of Evergen’s uncanon dragons. They are generally independent and level-headed and have a better feel for diplomatic matters than the others. Supposedly mutated from browns, these non-clutching females have hides of color that range from nearly the hue of a ripe redfruit to a ruddy near-brown color with a bright sheen of red or orange. At their full growth, these dragons can be the size of a brown, but generally do not reach the largest end of the spectrum. They chew firestone and fight thread, but do not clutch. They only arise from peridot mothers and are very rare. It is unknown how this variation came to be. Perhaps it is because of how peridot dragon eggs need to be moved from one hatching bed to another, or perhaps they only come from ebony x peridot pairings (since that is how the first arose). No one is certain, only time will tell.

+ Impresses only to Females.

SILVER

A conundrum of dragon genetics, the only low-ranking, dual-gendered metallic color ever seen on Pern, silvers are viewed with both awe and suspicion. The color of Pern's ancient enemy, these dragons are sometimes considered as bad omens like their vermilion sisters, who mimic the Red Star itself with its ruddy coloration. Despite the rumors, these dragons fly true and flame well like the blues they are thought to be mutated from. There also seems to be no true personality average for them. Where the ebonies are known for their mischievous streak, the vermilions for their independent, willful natures, and the peridots for their gentle, motherly ways, the silvers seem to balance whichever rider they choose perfectly no matter what the outcome.

Silvers are also strange in that their urges to mate are directly correlated to the promiscuity of their riders. A very sexually active rider will find that their partner will rise to mate or chase as frequently as any other dragon of their gender, however, a not very sexually active rider may find that their partner has no desire to rise or chase. Female silvers, like greens and vermilions, never produce eggs from their flights. They grow within the full spectrum of blue sizes at adulthood.

+ Impresses equally to Males and Females.

PERIDOT
Posted Image

Peridots are opposites of their ebony brethren in almost every way. Sporting hides of almost white pale green and a glassy shine, they are some of the most beautiful of the dragons. They are a tad smaller than regular greens, though not by much, and excel at aerial maneuverability. Calm and kind-hearted in nature, they will step forward to lend a helping claw to almost anyone in need.

It takes a very special female to be able to bond with one of these beauties. Because a peridot’s mating instincts are strangely tied to the golden queens, they will rise roughly a sevenday before or after a queen rises. Because of a queen’s super protective instincts when they brood, a peridot can not share the sands with their golden sisters or they’d be in serious mortal peril. The Weyrfolk have come up with a solution to this, however, and have set aside a special ground-level weyr equipped to serve as an ‘incubation’ area until the eggs can be moved to the hatching sands. This area is outfitted with a large box of sand positioned above a bed of coals underneath to warm it and it is maintained by lower caverns workers, who make sure that everything is the right temperature according to the peridot. She will relay her needs to her rider who in turn will tell the workers.

The reason it takes very special women to Impress these dragons is because of this crucial time after the peridot has risen and laid her eggs. The rider must convince her mothering dragon to give up her precious eggs so that they may be taken to the queen to be cared for in the proper heat of the hatching sands. One night, when the current brooding queen is in a deep sleep (determined by her rider), a group of bronzeriders, the peridot’s rider, and the weyrwoman will very carefully carry the eggs to the hatching grounds. The queen, because of her overwhelming maternal instinct and the fact that it was done while she was sleeping, doesn’t know the difference between her eggs and the peridot’s, nor cares.

To be bonded to a peridot is both a gift and a curse. On one hand the rider and dragon are unique and well known because of it, but on the other, they must deal with the sorrowful parting with their eggs soon after clutching. The rider must comfort and reassure her dragon heavily during this time lest the peridot refuse to let her eggs be taken and the hatchlings die. On hatchday, however, all the peridot’s and her rider’s frustrations are not for naught since the peridot can always tell which babies are hers. She shares a special connection with her children in the way that the queens share with their own offspring, and the peridot and her rider can watch happily as the hatchlings Impress to their own riders.

Peridots are also unique in the fact that even though they clutch, the mutation that created them also leaves them able to breathe fire. Not for very long like a bronze or brown, but enough to do their job in the queen’s wing where they fly to protect the golds, using their agility and quickness in the air to their advantage. Like golds, peridots are too valued for their ability to reproduce that they are not placed in any of the higher level wings during Threadfall. While most had thought the peridots were only tied to the mating schedule of the golds, they do in fact rise to mate as often as greens but they will only yield a clutch when they precede a queen flight if they are destined to have eggs at all that is.

NOTE: Not all peridot flights will result in eggs. This is in place so that people with peridot dragons may host flights if they want to, even though there are no eggs planned for her

+ Impresses only to Females.

MATING SPECIFICS

The Peridots only rise either roughly a sevenday before or a sevenday after the queens because their mating urges are strangely interlinked with those of the golden dragons. The peridot dragons do clutch, but only an upwards of 3 or 4 eggs at a time. Take into account that these specials will only appear if there are candidates deemed worthy to receive one.
