Written by the Illustrious Calli! Like other nymphs that roam the summer woods, Calliope always felt a powerful connection to the natural world around her, though this connection had been incomplete due to her Mianorite origins. That is she did, until the day came when a demon made her his slave; his influence caused her to grow ill, which caused a minor plague in Soto, where she lived. Several weeks later, Calliope passed on, and a massive, magical tree grew where her lifeless body had sunk into the mud, towering over the landscape. Deep, deep into the ground it sent its roots, high and wide it grew its branches. The Forlarren Nymph, Thaleia, was born. This new being was the offspring of the Good Nymph Calliope and Kaahn, the greater incubus who enslaved her. Thaleia helped eradicate the plague with her newfound healing power, and thus developed a revered reputation, garnering her great fame and prestige. The druid tribes in the Erth'netora began to worship her as the reincarnation of the Earth Goddess, giving offerings and taking pilgrimage to her tree every year. Two years went by and the druids established a permanent residence in the Nymph's grove. Calliope had been haunted by the soul of Jaida Treetalker, the former Mianorite Earth Goddess ever since the Goddess had lost her body to the reassertion of Elenlond’s native magic in 0AR. The Goddess grew jealous at Thaleia’s ascension, remembering how her name had been forgotten throughout Elenlond, and sought revenge against her. She took over the nymph's body, transforming her physical form into something twisted and noxious; Méadaigh. Rumors of a disturbance in the northwestern reaches of the Erth'netora spread, but stranger things have happened in those mysterious woods, and the hearsay went largely disregarded by leaders, while the populace was restless and rebels were relentless with gossip and propaganda. All sorts of explanations were put forth by citizens of Madrid, including some bizarre and outright ridiculous ones. When she heard about the strange yet persistent rumors, Councillor Rhia Terenas was keen to put an end to them; the last thing they needed was panic settling in. If nothing else, the Councillor was curious, and even somewhat disturbed. Rhia wanted to find out what was really going on in Erth’Netora and began to investigate. Soon, the threat made itself known. Several small villages were attacked by vines that were manipulated by the fairies in Méadaigh's thrall. Unable to put up a proper fight against their magic, most of the volunteers that rose up against the threat, such as Neriasis, were overcome by the fairy’s traps. Few managed to escape their clutches. The fairies rejoiced in their victory. The humans from the villages died or fled into the forest, where they were placed under an enchantment to wander until they dropped dead from exhaustion. News of a malevolent force rising up in the woods began to spread across the country. At the same time, the countryside became a war-torn hell. Unchallenged, with few to hinder their path, centaur tribes raided and pillaged half a dozen Sotoan villages. Those who managed to flee were picked apart by other beasts, while some survivors were taken as slaves. Suicide seemed to become the only way to know peace, as many families decided their own fates in such a way before the kentauroi could decide it for them. Sanctuary could no longer be found within the Erth’netora: no one dared to enter the winding, melancholy, drooping danger of Méadaigh's wilderness. The center of the woods had become totally ravaged with darkness, filled with dangerous beasts and an aura of malevolence. Driven by an possessive instinct, Méadaigh began manipulating and uniting the rest of the fae races living in the forest to rise against humanity. With ruthless cunning, she lured the unsuspecting with promises of favor, recruiting championsand spies to her cause. Being concerned with the political order of man, she intended for her agents to assist her in establishing a Kingdom ruled by the Natural Order that had begotten Méadaigh, agents who would defend it through those she endowed with authority. The war was taken up with a solemn vow to deliver the land from the grips of humanity. Human civilization was predominantly targeted, as they were the common enemies against nature. For their crimes against it, for the recovery of property that belonged to the Natural Order, and for the defense of all people who took that were dedicated to the cause. Soto's guilds were dedicated to defending the country against this assault, and were thus cut down and spread thin. Méadaigh’s plotting culminated with a surprise attack on Madrid. The Sotoan Council received warning of the army’s approach from a member of Argos, Jendrith, who as acting in place of Argos’ guildmaster, Ni’ab (who was truly Neriasis, and at that moment staging a coup against Moghul Orion de Lacey of Ashoka.) The Council decided to evacuate Madrid to the Zauber Mansion but nonetheless fight back with what troops they had. The ranks of Auberon’s Destiny, the Madrid City Guard and Mystic Occult were unfortunately diminished, and volunteers were called for to supplement the forces. Councillor Aniketos Hesperés was placed in charge of Madrid’s forces, but it escaped general notice that he was dangerously off-kilter. The Madridean Army was ultimately defeated, and beat a hasty retreat to the Zauber Mansion, where leaders immediately began plotting ways to take the city back. They also determined to send as many refugees to the Southwestern Isle as possible. Some refugees from Zauber Mansion were sent down the Falann River on rafts to Reine, where they would ideally be sent on ships to the Southwestern Isle. Other refugees made their escape to other countries on their own steam, facing the dangers of the forest and the fae that inhabited it on their journey. After the battle, the once-thriving city of Madrid was changed. The former bustling city was swallowed by the forest and overrun with vegetation. Black vines as thick as pillars grew over many of the city’s buildings and roads like tentacles, as if to choke out the energy left behind by the humans. They extended all the way around the Guildhall, on top of which grows a great black tree. The Madrideans who did not evacuate were forced to live alongside their new fae neighbours. Insurgents tried to topple Madridean rule from within, but were faced with an increasingly oppressive rule as a result. Meanwhile, smaller settlements faced constant encroachment from the magically enchanted forest. Those that survived the war were those that constantly removed the weeds that would grow up overnight. If this chore was not kept up with, the community would soon be awash in plants and its inhabitants placed under a trance that could not be broken. Bands of fae also attempted to wipe out these communities and would generally accost any human travelers in the forest. After months of planning, Méadaigh launched a siege on the city of Reine. Though the city was hemmed in by land, the port was, for a while, open, allowing shipments of food to come into the city and boatfuls of refugees to leave it. The Reineans also sustained themselves off plants grown within the city, on land offered by the wealthy and on certain streets. Méadaigh's enchantments affected these plants as well, though they fed the enemy. However, a blockade was soon placed on Reine – any ships that have tried to pass through the harbour were sunk by water spirits in alliance with Méadaigh. As such, the Reineans began to struggle to find food. Matters were made worse when the gardens in Reine abruptly died, succumbing at last to the winter cold. Forced to finally open governmental granaries, the Council ordered that the citizens be given bark bread in an effort to make supplies of grain last longer. The people inhabiting Reine were otherwise forced to sustain off whatever they could find – rats, tulip bulbs, shoe leather, whatever fish could be gotten from the harbour without sailing and so on. Auberon's Destiny also routinely arranged expeditions outside the city walls to search the farms for food. Things looked dire indeed. However, there was reason to hope. The farms around Zauber Mansion had not died, implying that Méadaigh's power was shrinking back at the edges. Meanwhile, plans were put in place to put dents in Méadaigh's sovereignty. First, the Fairy Queen Maeve was assassinated by one Qayin Graves and the fairies withdrew their support from beneath Méadaigh's defeat. Soon after that, the Angkarians broke the blockade on Reine's port. Though it was not a result of the Sotoans' efforts, another piece fell from Méadaigh's walls: the formidable commander of the goblins, Ginko, was killed by Méadaigh's lieutenant, Sabellius, sewing disarray among her ranks. Following this, a pathogen that had been created to target the fey was =released upon Méadaigh's followers by Jhaereth Valatar. The disease spread quickly amongst the fae, significantly weaking the forces arrayed at Reine. Thus they were unable to provide enough resistance when the Reineans made an attack on them. The siege was thus broken and the Sotoans pursued Méadaigh's retreating forces through the forest, which finally began to drop its leaves – though it was by now spring. Just as insurrection began to stir in Méadaigh's ranks, the Sotoans launched an attack on the newly-grown fae city of Nemetona. In the center of the city was the Pale Tree, which the Sotoans managed to destroy with the aide of airships and specially engineered mechanical beetles that drilled into the tree and ignited it within with holy fire. Méadaigh was killed, Madrid retaken, and after a year and a half of fighting, the Sotoans had taken back their country. However, the forest had just entered a long-belated autumn and did not start growing again until midsummer. What did grow did so weakly, for the soil had been exhausted by such a long and unnatural summer. The Sotoans, especially those in Madrid, also faced the enormous task of rebuilding and the decision of what to do with the Great Tree that had grown at the top of Madrid's Capitol Hill.
