The mountains were choked with snow, and for the young demon, Ersatz, such cold, wet fluffs were not a welcome feeling upon his exposed skin. Thus he had come down from the mountain passes where he had been spending most of his time. Though under the snowy peaks was not much better, it was a little less chill but no less wait, actually Ersatz was pretty sure it was wetter here. There was always the option of traveling from Morrim to Ashoka but the path there was laden with snow as well. In the end he opted to stay in the rain soaked lands of Morrim, better than freezing his toes off trying to get somewhere else. Today wasn’t so bad; the sun was out though the air was still chill. The young demon shivered a bit as he lay out upon a rock to try and dry out his otherwise waterlogged person. It was a wonder he ever survived the winters, well that wasn’t true, if he got cold enough he sought shelter in a small village or a farmer’s barn. There were plenty of places he could sneak in to, and some where a quick slaughter of the inhabitants meant food and warmth for a measure of time. Blankets, that’s what he really needed. But the sun was too warm at the moment for him to go in search of said resource just now. Greg was gone for now, the zombie having lost too many limbs to be viable any longer. Another reason to go in search of a town soon. It was lonely without a Greg around, even if the zombie was a bit of a buzz kill, always telling him not to do certain things. Like anyone cared what a demon did, they’d just as soon kill him anyways, or lock him away. Ersatz gave a low groan, he didn’t like being locked up any more than he liked sitting out in the sun with his fur and skin soaked to the bone. Rolling on to his back he wondered what to do with the day, maybe someone would come by. People were always more entertaining than rocks after all. |

A gelid freeze welcomed her, as she took the mountain path. A soft crunch under her boots would break the distant gossip of birds and the murmur of wind. A soft mist would escape her lips as whatever sweat from exertion faded before it ran as a bead over her skin as cold and white as the blankets that covered the path ahead. But it was a cold that she never felt. Ilazki would continue, her staff carving the way through snow as mountain and the road become more and more steeped. Frozen waterfalls wept, as the sun in the cloudless sky bathed them. The sound of broken twigs and branches would carry her attention as wolves feasted on a stag, the snow turning crimson, as the pack bore their bloody teeth against her. A murder of crows roosted on the trees above, cawing among themselves, waiting their turn to pick at the remaining flesh. She would disregard the beasts, climbing a series of snow blanketed boulders. Her feet now damp as snow had soaked into her boots, and whilst she had no desire to admit it, a chill began to cause discomfort. Without much thought, she climbed towards the highest boulder, gasping for air as her eyes of molten gold scanned the land below, and road she had traversed, as well as the sky above her. The Drayd turned, wishing to have the sun dry her feet and her boots. Only for her sight to be met by something she had not expected. "What... are you?" She said to the little beast, with a stoic glare. |

Ersatz had begun to stretch out his long feet and toes before he heard a voice. A spark of energy raced through him as he sat up with surprising ease. Even with his tail pinned beneath his bottom at his new posture it still flicked excitedly in response to the new comer. Sure he should have found it odd for someone to be wandering the path at this time of year, but weirder things had been known to happen. There was also the fact that he wasn’t too bright on picking out what most would consider normal happenstance. He was just glad that he wasn’t the only one up here any longer. Wait, she had said something. One grey ear flicked as he tried to remember if he had picked up on what she had said. It hadn’t been a greeting, at least not of the normal sort if it had been such at all. People didn’t bother greeting him friendly anyways, but she hadn’t sounded mean about it either. However, he was certain it wasn’t the most positive thing to come out of someone’s mouth either; it usually wasn’t. Had it been a question? He was almost certain it had been, judging by her glare she was waiting for some sort of response. Where was Greg when he needed him? The zombie was always good about letting him know what people had just said. Maybe she had asked who he was, that seemed reasonable giving the circumstance and location. People often thought it odd to find him just about anywhere really. But he was pretty sure the first word had been more harsh than ‘who’, had it been ‘what’ then? Yes that had to be it! Well that was rather rude he thought, he wasn’t a what he was a who; not that this would be the first or last time someone were to ask what he was. Demons came in all shapes and sizes after all, and there were too many classifications for him to know what to tell anyone other than just demon, seemed kind of a waste of a ‘what’ question. “That’s not a very nice question,” he decided was the best way to respond, “Who are you? That’s a nicer question. Can’t just go around asking people what they are, it’s rude. How’d you like it if I asked what you are? I’ll tell you who I am, I’m Ersatz.” |

The Drayd narrowed her golden eyes, inspecting the face, ears, tail and words of the creature that stood before her, surely damp by the snow, seeking the warmth of the sun to dry it's pelt. However the answer she had received was not the one she had demanded. Her slender fingers slid against the length of her staff as she retrieved it from the snow covered soil and stones that she had climbed. "I asked what were you." She replied as a cold mist emerged from her breath. She knelt closely to the furred creature, cold stare continuing the inspection that she had begun upon finding it. It was not a talkative animal, of that she was certain, even if his corporeal language told a story similar of that of a wild beast. There was even more to the furred creature that met the eye, that much she reckoned. Magic had a way to present itself with almost every being. Signatures were stronger in some than the rest. But the sort that resonated with him was peculiar, almost reminding her of the spells she weaved and sang in whispered tunes. Ilazki returned towards the face of the creature, looking her glare on it. "Had I any desire of knowing your name, I would have asked you." She said simply, standing tall over him once more. |

Ersatz’s tail stopped flicking in wide happy arcs and instead now just the tip flicked in mild agitation. Rude was one thing, demanding was another. Handling rude was easy, but when it came to someone demanding something of the otherwise happy-go-lucky demon things got a little more tense. Being demanded to do something or to answer in a particular way was not something Ersatz’s liked to do; it took away his freedom in a sense. That wasn’t to say he was opposed to answering questions, but only if they were on his terms. Demands were not his terms and thus he was reluctant to respond in a positive manner towards them. A soft gruff of a sound came from the impish demon as he turned his head refusing now to even properly look at the woman. It was not his fault if she could not tell a demon on sight, particularly one that looked as he did. If farm folk could tell just on brief inspection surely this woman who was getting closer than any of them dared could do so. It was not as if he hid what he was like many other demons did. In fact he did not have the ability to do so, he could not make the horns or tail disappear; couldn’t shorten his feet and hide his claws; nor could he hide the paw-like pads upon his hands that gave him a superior grasp when it came to climbing. The magic he possessed was restricted to that of the dead, and at this moment he would rather prefer the company of the dead to this demanding woman even if she had so far only demanded one thing of him. “Well then you are rude,” he said shifting on his rock to a crouching position so he could pull his tail out from under himself and out of that uncomfortable position. One might find it ironic that he would call someone rude when he found it perfectly acceptable to slaughter innocent humans and their livestock for fun. Ersatz yawned a little, stretching out the toes on one foot and picking the dirt from between the digits with a clawed hand. |

"Rude you say?" The Drayd replied, limiting herself to smirk upon her features. Slowly, more and more she was convinced that the creature before her was a form of a minor demon. A finicky and fickle sure, but one that hid power inside it's insignificant coil in this plane of existence. Albeit the extend of that power was something that she dare not to catalog. "Have you wanted courtesies I would suggest the game that men play." Ilazki found a rock upon which to sit. The bother of the cold and snow was something that she didn't mind. But even she needed a rest, with a reason behind it to study the demoniac creature before her. Her eyes looked at it, as it groomed itself like if was a cat not minding it's owner. "Or has it that from where you come, your kind treat each other with a modicum of courtesy?" A pondering overtook her mind as the silence settle between them, uninterrupted save for the renegade breeze that blasted a cold breath upon their skin and fur. What purpose could such creature take upon the world and what had brought it here? She supposed that there was always the possibility that a rift upon this reality had been opened and that this Ersatz had crawled from whatever hole it it came. "So, tell me Lord Ersatz." She said calmly. "What keeps you away from your keep and your serfs?" P.S.: Sorry for the late post. Real Life and Family claimed my time. My deepest apologies. Erstaz’s merely shook his head at her words. Mostly out of not understanding what she was saying to him. What game that men played? He liked games but she was quite vague in her wording so he wasn’t sure which game she was referring to. Somehow he could connect that by men she meant humans, or so he hoped. A lot of creatures referred to humans as men or man, usually with a hilarious undertone to it like they were something to be feared. Which he supposed to a degree that was true, but it wasn’t man itself that was scary it was their inventions. Particularly the sharp kind. Dwarves on the other hand, they were the ones with the real power of invention, or so he’d been told. She also made some kind of mention of where he came from. Well that just didn’t make sense where he was from wasn’t much different than the places around here. Clearly she was confused. Humans weren’t any different here than they were there. As for how his kind treated each other he couldn’t say, he’d never run across anyone else like him. Sure he’d met other demons, but even they didn’t seem to want to waste time on him. They were usually quite absorbed in what they were doing, though some had been okay with allowing him to tag along with their journey until the impish demon got bored and wandered off. Ersatz’s lifted his head and tilted it at an odd angle. She was talking nonsense again. Calling him a lord, that was ridiculous, he certainly didn’t look like a lord, nor did he smell like one, or act like one. Ersatz’s knew of lords, though he’d never been really close to any, he was pretty sure they weren’t supposed to wear rags or smell like dirt and death. They also certainly weren’t to be found sunbathing on rocks out in the middle of winter. His features screwed up a little trying to decipher the rest of what she’d said. If she hadn’t spoken so evenly he would have sworn she had some sort of speech impediment repeating the word keep like that, or maybe she forgot what she was saying and had meant to add more after that second keep. Also why was she asking about surf, he wasn’t from the ocean, there was no surf to be had. “Are you having a stroke? I think that’s what it’s called. I’ve been told that people suffering strokes often say weird disjointed things. The ocean’s down that way if that’s where you’re looking to go,” he said pointing off in the direction he was pretty sure that the ocean was. |
