Walking around Etruria, Loknai noticed many differences from his village. First, the trading town easily dwarfed his home. Second, it was crowded to someone grown used to wandering for weeks alone. He had somehow found himself walking along the docks, noticing the large storehouses, filled with who knows what. The possibility of finding a treasure trove inside one of them danced in his head as he watched the workers, trying to get their schedule down to aid him in sneaking in. While he was in there, maybe he will even find some food to fill his backpack, instead of relying solely on hardtack. After an hour or so of watching he felt confident enough in their schedule, and worked his way around the back of one of the buildings, hoping to find a less than obvious way in, to avoid the notice of the small group who seemed to be guarding the warehouse. Rounding the corner, he noticed a slight glow in the shadows and slowed his approach, stopping at the corner and listening for any hint of trouble. |

Bast was sleeping. That is, she was sleeping as well as any fat and contented cat that had just gorged herself on what felt like half a warehouse of salted fish could sleep. She lay on her back in the alley, little paws pointing skywards, her belly distended from the sheer quantity of fish consumed. Her tail flicked every now and then in awareness as someone passed by the alley mouth, ears swiveling to pick up on the noise, trace it until it was gone. Overall not a bad place to be, even considering the proximity of the water. She'd have said she was doing well for herself. Eldahar was pleasant enough with its exotic architecture and the sheer amount of history tied to the place, the darkness seething under the beautifully crafted exterior, just barely. Every now and then though one needed a change of scenery, a new place to explore, and she'd found it, sort of, with Etruria. It wasn't so far from Eldahar that she couldn't go back within a couple of days, but far enough that she didn't have to see the same faces day in day out. That was hard to do with Eldahar honestly, the sheer volume of people was still amazing to her. So many people to rob and so little time. In the shade of the alley, her fur glowed faintly, banked coals casting dim light on the wall she was lying against. Ears perked, turned at the sound of footsteps, softer than the purposeful ones that strode back and forth across the mouth of her alley. Well she'd been considering moving anyway, find some sun to lie in and soak up the warmth. Normally she would have told herself not to spend so much time as a cat. She started to pick up the habits more frequently, behave more like the animal and it was more difficult to convince herself she wasn't one. Furtive. That was the word. One yellow eye slid open, tracked the progress of the slippery youth slinking into the alley. She could get up, run away skittishly and make a ton of noise. She could hiss at him and stand her ground. Or she could just lie there and digest her meal. As furtive as he was, the latter seemed like a great idea right now. And for all the salted fish that the warehouse workers had rained upon her, she still didn't feel inclined to warn them about someone who might be a potential thief. Wasn't there some kind of thieves code that said they should look out for one another? Maybe? In either case she decided she couldn't really be bothered. Especially since the thief code sounded quite plausible even if she'd just made it up, and one of those workers she liked to dub 'the bastard' had tried to throw water on her. Granted she'd responded by latching onto his face and giving him some new battle scars much to the amusement of the men in there. It wasn't every day nature struck back in the form of a small ginger feline. So she rolled her eyes closed, then murmured under her breath, "Duck right and hide behind the stairs kid, if ye dinnae want tae be seen." |

Slightly startled by the voice from nowhere, Loknai figured it was decent advice and hid behind the stairs, to his left, but the voice must've been watching him. Did it come from that glowing cat? Not having time to wonder as someone walked through the alley and would've seen him if he had taken any longer getting under the stairs. Once he was gone, Loknai whispered out, "Who's there?" He kept his hand on his scimitars hilt just in case they were not friendly. |

Much to her amusement, the would-be sneak-thief failed to judge his right from his left and went the wrong way. It was enough however, to put him from the direct line of sight of the next passerby, sleeveless and all hair and muscle to her colour blind viewpoint, grunting with the effort of hauling a box of...something. The stench of fish was overwhelming, making it difficult to discern the more subtle variations underneath. Bast snorted in an effort to clear her olfactory senses, to little effect, then rolled over so that her feet were facing the doorway. Easier to see like this. "Yer other right." She muttered loud enough, yawning and attending to her face, sandpaper tongue rasping across her paws, washed around her nose, up over the ears, on the eyes. Casual as a....a...well, a cat. Was he serious? Trying to break into a store, you didn't just announce your presence to everyone! Not that she was an expert thief herself, but it was a damned sight easier when people thought you were something completely ordinary and unremarkable. It was easier to be overlooked and forgotten, and one of the top things a thief never wanted, besides being caught, was to be remembered. "Father Bloody Winter." The little cat rolled over, stretched painfully taut, then relaxed and sat, curling her tail around her feet, golden eyes fixed on the doorway. After a moment she slipped inside, and sat on the bottom step, diligently washing herself, while keeping one eye on Loknai. "Yeh might wanna stop messin' aboot kid, dallyin' gets yeh spotted." If cats could smile... |

Loknai quickly snuck into the door, wondering since when cats talked and glowed, much less helped a thief out. Sure, he mistook left for right, but it didn't happen that much. Just some days he concentrated a little less and did whatever his mind wanted to. He didn't much like taking orders either..... Speaking of which, what kind of cat is this? Quietly he answered, "I'm not exactly a career thief first of all, and second, who are you?" As he was talking, he heard a slight thud from outside, and fearing it was a dock worker, he retreated into the shadows and pressed himself against the wall, holding his breath. |

She could have spotted that he was no professional a mile off, not that she could call herself that. Professional forger maybe, and certain some sort of thief...but when you took into account the fact that she couldn't enter most buildings without some sort of permission, it made her look pretty bad, really. What kind of thief couldn't break into a building and case the joint? Actually it wasn't so much the breaking in as the entering that was the problem. Being able to change her shape made the breaking in part a doddle, among other things. So long as it was outside, she could steal it...otherwise...well, it was a royal pain in the arse. The only reason she was sitting inside now was the simple, earlier acquiescence to her presence. "A friend, with friendly advice. Thieves honor, if yeh will. Yeh ken this warehouse mostly stores salted fish right?" She could have mentioned that there was a room where the overseer kept to, his maps and documents for the shipping were in there, and takings from the ship and the dock workers too by all accounts. The money was hardly interesting to her though, though this newbie here... Her ears flattened, perked and twisted towards the thud, poised to flee at any further sign of someone entering, but nobody did. Her eyes slithered back to the strange would-be-thief, narrowed. What was his next move going to be? She'd not rat him out, but if he was stupid enough to get caught she wasn't sure she'd jump in and haul him out of the fire either. |
