Name – Barnabé Régis Béringer Age – 2 months Gender – Male Alignment – Lawful Neutral Social Class – Toy Occupation – Consulting Inspector Race – Unknown Nationality – Sotoan Weapons – None Physical Appearance – Currently, Inspector Béringer is a small (approximately half a foot) woolen knitted and stuffed toy. His skin tone is consistent with pink dyed wool and he has black short cropped "hair", simple facial features and undergarments woven on to his body. He wears small woolen clothes that were made for him when he was created, a simple shirt and pair of trousers, over which he wears a scrap of hempen cloth which acts as cloak. He has also somehow managed to aquire a small, wide-brimmed leather hat and pair of boots, which come in handy because his legs kept getting wet. His facial features, like his body, are magically animated and will change to reflect his mood. When talking his mouth opens, but only on his face, there is no split on the head of the dool to simulate it. Personality – Inspector Béringer is of the belief that he is one of the greatest deductive minds to have ever walked the planet, and happily ignores the increasing pile of evidence to the contrary. While generally quite aimiable, he is posessed of a sharp wit which he uses to condescend when he feels someone is being paticularly stupid. He is possessed of a remarkable self confidence which means that he explains away or completely disregards his failings at his job, the facts he has misinterpreted, and the resentment of those he is assisting. In fact, he routinely constructs his own narrative of what is happening around him and follows that. Béringer is something of a romantic and frequently becomes infatuated with the women he works with. He also is a soft touch with children and happily plays with them, as long they don't rip his stitching. He loves to solve mysteries and puzzles, and will happily throw himself into the job. In fact, when he doesn't have a mystery to solve, he gets restless and turns to drink, which does absoultely nothing to him except gets him wet and makes him slightly more flammable. He enjoys theatre although he's never been, frequently asks for tea and then never touches it, and likes animals even though they often attack him. He is aware of his limitations as a toy, and regarding the actual capturing of suspects to be outside his capabilities and responsibility. Despite his fascination with mysteries, how exactly he came into being is not something he is curious about, and in fact he thinks his background is quite mundane. History – Once upon a time, there was a very special girl who loved her dog, Jacques. He was a corgi, and she had known him since he was a puppy. Jacques was the silliest, lovliest dog that she had ever known, but one day, Jacques went missing. The girl went out every day to look for him, but she couldn't find him anywhere. It was a mystery! The girl had read in a book that there were certain people who solved mysteries, so she asked a guard if he could help, but he said he didn't know any inspectors*. When she asked her mother, she said that she would find one for her. A week later, she gave her a box, and in that box was Inspector Béringer! But he wasn't a real Inspector, he was just a toy. So that night, the girl sat outside and wished upon all the stars she could find that Inspector Béringer would come to life and find Jacques. When she went to bed, something curious happened as the girl slept peacefully. As if by magic, Inspector Béringer came to life, and knowing there was a mystery to be solved, set off to find Jacques. Inspector Béringer worked hard for many weeks. It's difficult to search a city for a lost corgi when you're very small and cats keep trying to hunt you. But no alleyway went unvisited, no bush unsearched, no dog-catcher unbroken into. After criss-crossing the city and back again, he eventually stumbled across Jacques living in a park a few streets away from his house. Victorious, Inspector Béringer rode Jacques all the way home, the corgi yapping happily all the way. The girl gave him and Jacques a great hug, having been so sad thinking they had both been lost forever, and he regaled her with tales of his adventures. He had solved his first mystery, but his travels showed him that the world is full of enigmas in need of solving, so now every day he sets out to bring in the criminals who would do wrong in this world, his trusty corgi steed by his side, and returns home each night to tell the girl the tales of the city. *He also said some rather profane words.
