It was nearly noon on a surprisingly warm spring day. People were emerging from their houses in the unusually clement weather, and the traders, who emerged every day without fail, rain, snow or shine, were doing a roaring trade. At least, roaring in comparison to normal spring takings. Fairin was still quiet and civilized, without the pressing throng of some other cities he’s visited, but also without feeling utterly deserted like the wilds he’d been exploring lately. As such, Vangelis found that he rather liked Fairin. There was a long, low wall that ran around the edge of the harbor yard. It was topped with smooth stones, and on one side ran a road. On the other was the wide yard, where men stacked canvas and timber and tarred ropes. The skeletal keel of a small fishing skiff lay upside down on flats. It was busy, as always. Sailors didn't stop for the weather. People would always pay good money for fresh fish. Vangelis was perched on the low wall, one foot up on it, with an arm hooked over it; his other leg dangled down by the side, limpidly swaying back and forth along it. He was, as per usual, barefoot and tapping his big toe against the stone. In honor of the sunshine, Vangelis wasn't wearing his shirt, but instead had it folded beneath him, used as a sort of pillow beneath his head. The sun felt good against his bare skin, and he soaked it in readily. He had a distant expression on his face, and was watching two people chatting in the harbor yard, his flametongue gaze currently unnoticed by the duo. With his free hand, he fiddled with a single gold coin; the first he had actually acquired, found upon the ground during his travels. It flashed the pale sunlight against the ground every time he flicked it round. For some reason he had grown quite attached to it, finding himself amused by the idle action of turning it between his knuckles, along with the light ‘ting’ whenever he flicked it skyward with his thumbnail. His gaze was fixed watching a young woman and the harbor master. They were standing near a pile of torn spinnakers, and discussing money. He saw fingers raised - three? four? - and then a shake as the deal was done. The girl began to fold up the fine canvas sails. She was evidently used to this; there was a knack to making small packages out of the wieldy sails. After they'd been folded up and tied with cord, the girl put them into a cloth bag and slung them over her back. Vangelis caught himself smiling. It seemed like a peaceful existence, and he took to letting his mind imagine what the rest of her daily routine entailed. He glanced up at the sun following this. He held up the golden coin, letting the reflected light shine on his face before moving it around to send the refracted beam elsewhere along the road. It was just about noon now. |

Penemue circled the city like a predatory bird looking for its next meal. Having only just awoken, she was stretching her wings and letting them bask in the sun, causing them to glimmer like how the ocean sparkled when the sun smiled down upon it. Truth be told, the winged celestial actually was hunting. Ever since she had first arrived in this world, there had been two powerful beacons of magic, reverberating like the beating of her own heart, urging and calling to her, begging for her to come find it. Whatever it was, Penemue had ignored it up until that very moment, when the pulsing and somewhat magnetic attraction became so powerful that it was simply impossible to continue to avoid it. The other signal was still far, far away, but first, the angel wanted to find out the source of the magical beacon. That was when she spotted him. Her eyes shone like molten gold upon seeing the celestial light which poured from his body as he enjoyed the beautiful sun's rays upon his visage. Her head spun around, doing a double take, and her breath had been trapped in her lungs for several long seconds until she had realized that she was no longer breathing. It was the first time she was seeing another being that was particularly similar to her person. His light was dim from how far away she was, but it probably also had to do with the fact that that particular celestial was trying to hide his nature, choosing to remain inconspicuous, unlike Penemue. Penemue was well aware that other Celestials had left their world to live amongst the humans, but she hadn't truly believed it -- for who could possibly want to live amongst the vermin? -- until the moment she set eyes upon him. Her curiosity peaked; she wanted to ask him all sorts of questions, and perhaps even get to know him without prying into his mind like an alien intruder. After all, he wasn't a human. Penemue swooped down in an arc until she flew over him, circled around him once, and landed beside, tucking her wings in comfortably behind her back. Her hair whipped around her face as a strong gust passed through. Penemue could only stare at him, suddenly speechless in his presence, and stood there almost awkwardly as the breeze rustled the feathers of her large blue wings. Her mouth opened as if to speak several times but the words were caught in her throat; her cheeks flushed red at the embarrassment of her sudden behavioral disarray. "Nice weather we're having," she uttered rather quickly, the words spilling out before she could catch them and say something normal. She winced when the sentence was out in the air, and desperately wished to take the words back so that she didn't sound so ridiculous. Nice weather we're having? Really? Her voice sounded strange even to her own ears, and she wanted to throw herself from the wall and disappear into oblivion forever. Edited by Penemue, May 18 2015, 06:36 PM.

With the golden coin held above his head, and his gaze firmly locked onto it, Vangelis smirked to himself. He began to wonder about the allure of the coin and what it represented. To him, it meant nothing; a mere circle of metal, this particular one only being of vague, yet temporary sentimental value due to the fact that it was the first he acquired, and the first of anything was always something special, even if only a little bit. However, he had no pockets or place to hold it, nor any need or want to acquire more, so to him it was just a transient curiosity, even if a special one. In his travels, Vangelis had learned that to the majority who inhabited this land, this coin meant so much more, and to quite a few of those, it meant almost everything, and to quite a few of those, it did mean everything. It was strange to him to think that this object - this inanimate, non-sentient creation of mortals held so much sway and importance over those mortals. Vangelis had trouble understanding the logic of their barter system. To exchange these coins in return for goods and services, but if you lacked the proper amount, those goods and services would be denied to you. Even if that denial meant your destitute or death. But, why...? Did they not see how much more valuable life was when compared to these coins? Why bother with these coins, when you could give and help simply because you possess the ability and power to do so? What more motivation did they need beside their ability to do for the betterment of all? Did they not see all the hardship, death, and destruction that they wrought onto themselves based solely on the want of these... coins? Could they not imagine the alternative? "Hmmmm...," the Celestial hummed to himself thoughtfully, before flicking the coin into the air above him, and with it, his thoughts on the matter out of his head. As the gold currency spun, his eyes locked upon it, something high above caught his attention beyond it. He blinked as his vision refocused on the newer curiosity, his hand reaching to casually snag the coin before it fell and smacked him in the face. 'Oh?' His flametongue eyes followed the form as it circled above his head, quickly descending on its way towards him. He didn't react to this arrival immediately, though there was a strange Vangelis shifted his position in response to the new arrival; sitting up slightly and using his forearms to brace against the wall, propping up his torso. He tilted his head in curiosity while staring intensely at the other as they spoke, studying them, but in an nonchalant kind of way. 'Four wings?' How interesting, and blue even! How familiar, like the other he had met before, but also... Different from that one in a way that resonated familiarity with him specifically. This one was different from them, just as he had been different from them, he could feel it immediately that they weren't from here either. The new arrival's words were a strange initiation however. To appear out of the blue and then speak about the weather without even an hello. Strange indeed, but also rather amusing. He smiled at her then, "Indeed it is." He spoke with a voice that was a cool, smooth bass, and held casual, familiar ease as if he were conversing with a longtime friend. A short, amused chortle escaped him, his lips pulling back into a toothy smirk in reaction to her awkwardness. "Though most weather is good weather, I'd say. Even if I am more partial to snow and storm, than sun and clear skies..." Vangelis continued pleasantly as he took to rolling the coin in his hand forward and back in a slow steady motion against the stone. |

Now that she was closer, Penemue could see his inner golden light more clearly, although she wondered where his wings her, why he kept his wings hidden, or if he even had wings at all. In this way he was not quite like her. There could be many reasons why a Celestial would want to hide their true nature. That was all she had done the first couple of months she had arrived on the land they called Morrim. She oftentimes still chose to hide her wings within the Mist she manipulated around herself, but there were also many times she had chosen not to; it was a lack of caring on her part, which was not at all professional for what her mission was. Then again, she took great pleasure taking in the awe upon the faces of the mortals when she stood before them in all of her celestial glory, feeling as though she were a God amongst them. "I hope you don't mind," she began slowly," but I felt your spirit. Saw your inner light. I couldn't help but to become curious." When the strange celestial sat up and gave her a sideways glance, she nearly gasped at the sight of his burning red eyes; they glimmered dangerously, like the scarlet crystals that formed amidst the toxic smog and heat of scorching lava in the Volcanic mountains of Morrim. They were captivating, beautiful, the colors swirling together, drawing her in with a quiet violence. And yet, in all of their mysterious ferocity, they were laughing, and joyful, and bright. His voice was deep, and attractive. She noted his confidence, how he seemed oblivious to the fact that they were mere strangers, and the way he smiled at her awkwardness, and the way she smiled back. He fascinated her. Penemue ran her fingers through her hair, smoothing it out after the flight. She cleared her throat and gestured to the spot next to him. "May I take a seat?" And there it was again; the brainwashed warrior, trained to ask permission for every little movement, gesture, and word. Penemue desperately hoped that the other would not take offense to her strange disposition. It was something that she simply could not help, indefinite politeness having been deeply rooted and drilled into her mind. Penemue had been created and trained to be the perfect warrior, although she was hardly considered perfect back in her homeworld. In fact, her curiosity and independence had been hindrances at the best of times, and would often get her into serious trouble with her Teachers. Even so, a warrior was what she was and was all she would ever be. |

At the sound of her voice, Vangelis shook his head. “No no, it is fine,” he assured her calmly, continuing to absently roll his coin against the stone. “If the roles were reversed, I’d have done much the same,” he spoke with a nod. “It is not often that I run into kin, after all.” It was a pleasant surprise really, particularly because he hadn’t sensed her presence at all until she was, quite literally, directly on top of him. Even then, he had more seen her than sensed her. Granted, the lapse in his focus could be attributed to his internal ponderings and general confusion regarding the motivations of mortal society in regards to money, but still…. Vangelis could count on one hand the number of similar beings he was aware of in this land, and even fewer the number he had actually managed to meet so far. This would be a nice change of pace, he figured. A chance to not feel so entirely foreign and disconnected. He could tell that the other was studying him, and he did much the same to her. Her wings were enchanting to him; their shape, number, size, and vibrant color, though he wondered if she was aware of the attention they could bring. In the same way that she saw his light and became curious about him, mortals would in turn see her wings and become curious about her. Though their interest was generally on the positive side, occasionally they could become fanatical with fear and delusion, assuming the appearance of winged beings necessitated the arrival of end times, or divine judgement. It was partially the reason why he chose to keep his own wings hidden unless necessary - it helped with blending in, and allowed him the freedom to assimilate into mortal society, kind of, without being distracted. The other reason was the factor of sheer luminosity. He had found that it was kind of hard to really interact with the populace if people who looked too long in your direction were constantly made dazzled and dizzy. When she asked if she could sit, he started. “Yes, of course.” The male shifted his position again to make room, regardless of there being ample amounts of it already, this time sitting up fully while facing her, and pulling his legs inward to be crossed in front of him. He stretched his arms above his head for a moment, then rolled his right shoulder and neck. “I was tired of lounging anyway.” He flashed her a toothy grin before flipping his coin in the air. Her behavior did not come off as particularly odd to him really. Perhaps because he was just assuming it to be the normal kind of apprehension one feels when first interacting with a stranger, again assuming that it would melt away into a sort of comfort in time. Even if it didn’t, that was fine. Just as mortals were varied in their personalities and eccentricities, it was not too hard to fathom that Celestials too would be unique in their behaviors. “My name is Vangelis.” He introduced himself then as a way to continue breaking the ice. ”What shall I address you by? And what brings you to this place in particular?” He caught the coin without looking before immediately flipping it skyward once again. |

It wasn't very hard to fly around and go unnoticed. Penemue rarely flew low enough for anybody to even notice her humanoid figure, and they would easily mistake her for a simple bird of prey. The lot of them seemed rather simpleminded regardless. Oftentimes, whenever she flew, Penemue didn't have the worry of the humans. The busy streets, amass with people whose their eyes seldom wandered to the skies, choosing instead to keep a steady gaze upon the ground on which they walked, their heads hanging heavy as their minds were plagued by constant misery. The threat of death and disease and empty stomachs seemed far too an important deal to bother with some pretty birds flying around amongst the clouds. Oh, the sweeping insensitivity of their still, black and white lives. "Thank you," she said. Penemue moved to take a seat on the edge of the wall next to him, propping her knees up and wrapping her arms around them in an open and rather masculine way. At that moment, Penemue looked upon the city built from stone and wood, and began to wonder what this particular Celestial thought about humans. Vangelis seemed to be relatively right at home for one such as them, taking joy in this life, this world, where they simply did not belong. It was a beautiful world, an adulterated garden of Eden undeserving of the cruel and lecherous pests that inhabited it. It reaffirmed her convictions to continue on her mission, until the job was completed, and all of the life that she beheld on this world, she could behold on her homeworld instead. That was the dream in the end, and it was one dream she longed to see fulfilled. Her people deserved that and more after all they had suffered. Penemue sighed, her eyes seeming to shadow when she remembered the sights of the toxic rain pouring down from purple smog which could easily melt the flesh off of one's bones. It's lingering sense of horror was ingrained into her mind. But that would soon be changed. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Vangelis. My name's Alcestis Penemue," she said after Vangelis introduced himself, turning her head to look at him. "But you can just call me Penemue." Out of pure sheer force if instinct, Penemue's hand wrapped itself around the coin, closing it into a fist as she caught it in a flicker of motion. Then, she held out the coin to him innocently, the golden circular object sitting on the palm of her hand. "As you might have guessed, I come from a world that's far, far away from here. I was sent here on a mission by my leaders to study the people that live here." "I arrived on this world not too long ago, before the snow began to fall. I had never before in my life seen snow before. It was.... quite beautiful," she smiled, perhaps a bit too gently for the kind of person she was, but thinking about the snow, having witnessed it in its fully beautiful glory as it fell from the sky to land on the ground, covering the lands in the cold white powder, it brought a soft joy to her heart, one that she had never felt before. It was strange and bizzare and slightly uncomfortable. Shaking her head out of her reverie, Penemue turned to him with a curious expression on her face, and perhaps even a bit expecting. She wondered what he thought of the people that lived here. "What brings you to these lands, Vangelis?" |

If Penemue were a bird of prey; one to fly high above the notice of mortals until something of interest caught her attention, than by contrast Vangelis was more akin to a passerine; flying low and existing close to the mortal's daily routine, bright and ostentatious with large golden wings unfurled. He was frequently, as Penemue had found him today, perched somewhere near to them, if not actively interacting with them of his own accord. While at times it was true that their lives were plagued by misery and a necessary drive to survive their hardships by any means, he tended to provide respite and sanctuary, or at least he tried to. Tried to break the monotony with a kind of rare beauty, a miraculous healing, or some example of true altruistic kindness. Sometimes a single event like that could change a person, sparking a chain of reactive behavior that helped to make their short existence a little less drone and better the existence of everyone little by little. He nodded in return as she sat across from him, though took no notice of the nature of her posture; such differences between masculine and feminine in movement and behavior generally being lost upon him. As she looked around the city, Vangelis in turn looked upon her. He noticed the sharpness of her profile, how her strong jaw-line and straight nose worked in tandem with her sharp haircut and eyes. A bird of prey indeed. It was then that she sighed, and what he perceived as a vague forlorn look appeared in her eyes. Curious, but it was far too soon to pry about potential sadness that was not directly in front of them. After all, he could have just been mistaken and it was some other emotion. Either way, whatever it was, the look did not remain long, and soon vanished as the new arrival introduced themselves. "Alcestis Penemue," he repeated the name melodically, following with a positive sounding hum, inwardly finding the arrangement of syllables to be quite pleasing on the tongue. "The pleasure is mine, Penemue." The Celestial blinked when his coin was snatched out the air, caught off guard by the other's action which broke the rhythm of his reflexive motion. He grinned as she held it out to him, gingerly plucking it out of the palm of her hand, only to begin turning it several times between his fingertips. He liked the texture of the pressed metal, the nicked circumference particularly. As she spoke, Vangelis offered his attention, a thick brow raising at Penemue's mention that her reason for being here was due to what was basically a scouting mission. Apparently the place where she originated still had some semblance of hierarchy. Fascinating. At the other's mention of snow, and comment on its beauty, a gleam came to Vangelis' eyes. "Indeed. The snowfall on this world is quite beautiful, though I am very familiar with it from my own home." He did not bother to mention that the snowfall here was, generally speaking, a lot gentler and short lived than the month long blizzards that he was otherwise accustomed to. It was partially why he barely flinched when confronted with this world's colder weather. Of course, blizzards like those were an occurrence that he did not particularly miss or wish to transplant here. He got the feeling that such weather would not do well for the mortals of this world; they barely enjoyed the winter they had here, aside from its aesthetic beauty. Not to mention the damage it would wreak on the biodiversity of their flora and fauna. "Mmm..." Vangelis did not immediately answer the inquiry, instead shifting his gaze to look out towards the port and harbor. That was actually a very good question, one that he hadn't allowed himself the time to think much about. "A simple change of scenery and interaction I suppose..." He did not have a mission like Penemue had mentioned, nor did he have superiors to report to. There was something that he believed himself duty-bound to do, two things actually, but neither of those were why he was here. Vangelis then turned the focus of his flame-like eyes back to his new friend. "From what you've hinted at though, your home sounds quite different from this one, as well my own, Penemue. Isn't it nice to be able to visit a place that is of such contrast? From my understanding, there are not many like us who are native to this place, so to me it is quite a precious wonder." |
