SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

High Queen of the Luin Islands

The hot summer breeze blew in through the open windows of the Throne room. The sun was rising higher and higher in the sky nearly reaching its peak along with the heat. She was dressed for the weather, wearing a thin elegant green silk chiffon over a satin under gown, with a Gold metal belt around her waist and two matching pieces on each shoulder. Her long raven hair was in a half-up-do, a braid twisted up into a bun whilst the rest of her hair hung loose over her shoulders and down her lower back. Of course, the crown adorned itself atop her head, giving her a regal look fit for a Queen, although her small form barely fit on the throne, which seemed giant in comparison to her.

It was a relatively peaceful time for Angkar; there were no active threats, and its inhabitants were safe, happy, and prosperous. The cities of Ildri and Zedrin had been cleaned up of pretentious pirates acting as slavers significantly over the last several weeks, and the rest of the cities were to come, although she was already receiving news that many were fleeing their lands in fear of being hung as so many already have been.

After what happened to her and the close call she had with becoming a slave illegally herself, Eulalia was not going to take any chances of it happening to somebody else. It was not something her council took kindly to, since she had undergone giving such orders without their approval, but the young Queen was starting to care little for what they wanted and cared for. She ruled and planned to do just that whether they liked it or not.

There were several new rooms within the castle, as well as better and stronger terraces and battlements. The courtyard was rebuilt bigger and with marble, with a garden of grandeur fit for the Gods and a new fountain with stone statues of the elemental deities Eulalia and most of the native population of Angkar worshipped. Nearby the Castle, in the lower-to-middle class district, there was an affordable bathhouse built at the center with beautiful shrubberies surrounding it. The city, too, had grown, with several new buildings and homes and updated infrastructure. This was due to the rising homeless population, and Eulalia ordered new affordable homes to be built on their behalf, and for these homeless to be given work instead of being forced into slavery. These were things that had been taken care of due to petitions issued by citizens and leaders alike.

Eulalia had set up time to hear petitions for the new month. Amongst the first was a concerned citizen over the benefit of the streets, in which some were broken up and practically impassable from the potential dangers they present. Eulalia ordered for every street in Ildri to be inspected and reconstructed if necessary. No longer would there be any cracks and potholes on the roads to cause undesirable casualties for her citizens on the go.

“How many more supplicants are there?” She whispered, leaning closer to Navarez, who stood to the right side of the Throne. These days, the man clad in armor from head to toe acted more as her adviser and personal guard rather than military general. It had been his desire ever since he thought he'd lost her when she had been kidnapped, and Eulalia granted him what he wished; a place by her side.

“One hundred, my Queen,” his voice was low as he leaned down so she could hear him.

“Very well,” she sighed, before raising her voice and ordering: “Send in the next one.”

    The Nomad Idiot

There were two things that made Tom a good courier, firstly was the fact that he was fast, despite having no horse his boots traveled where no horse or carriage could, and he made sure he could hitchhike where he needed to make for time. The second and probably most important thing was that he was a self aware idiot, he would not try to sell the information, but he also would not be tricked to sell it, he would only deliver it to the person it was intended to, and if anyone wanted to take it from him they had to catch him. That was a thing that was easier said than done, not only was he fast on his feet he had an incredible luck when it all seemed grim, miraculously dodging arrows or spells fizzling when they should not.

He had been entrusted in Morrim with an important message and the person who gave him the order had paid a decent amount of money for him to deliver it to the queen in less than two days. He had probably never been paid so much to run in his entire life, and he wasn’t exactly sure why they had sought him out, but he ran, he jumped, he hitchhiked, rode boats and then ran some more. Now he was running trough the crowded streets of Ildri, the red stones felt the lightness of his feet and he sprinted through people. He was sweating a lot, maybe it was from the warm day or the fool had probably been running almost nonstop ever since he left Morrim, he was on a mission and he had been told it was of great importance. He was almost there and in time too, but just around the corner he collided with someone wearing purple.

    - I’m sorry… - He said in a hurry as he struggled to keep his balance, but when he did something caught his foot and he fell forward. As he turned around he saw a young woman with dark skin and glowing eyes, next to her was a man as big as two times his size and a furry individual, they all looked angry. The young girl was folding a whip before handing it over to the cat person and he remembered the face from somewhere. Is she the one from Madrid, in the tavern? Can’t be…

    - I said I’m sorry! – Said Tom, hoping they would not harm him.
    - Sorry? Who thy think thou are speaking with? Mister Heiglenesh, explain this peasant exactly who I am. – Tom’s eyes widened as the tower of a man came to him and with ease lifted him in the air by the shirt’s collar.
    - I have… a… message for the… queen! – He struggled to say the words as the rest of his body flailed around. – Important message… I must go! – This prompted a reaction from the young woman with the glowing eyes.
    - Then go! Mister Heiglenesh, put him down. A message for the queen is of equal importance to me as it is to my queen.

As his feet set on the ground he did not even say thanks or sorry, he ran away as fast as his two legs could carry him. He still heard that left behind there was some argument, but he was no longer concerned about it, he was already blowing past the streets, back on the mission! Castle Evermore was just ahead, it would not be long now, what he did not expect was the long line of people waiting to get in. What was going on at the castle today? I don’t care, I will charge through!!! Of course it was a stupid idea that was going to make many people angry, guards included.

However when Tom got by the castle he began to shout. – MESSAGE FOR THE QUEEN!!! – He kept on shouting it with the sealed envelope held up high. This cause a mixed reaction in the crowd, some gave way others felt he was going to cut the line and got in his way. But a swift, even if clumsy Tom jumped on top those that got in the way and when he fell do the ground he still managed to roll under the legs of another annoyed person. When the guards went to block him he stopped just in from of them, and when they decided to grab him he jumped over them, one of the guards hit the ground face first when Tom stomped on the back of his head.

It was cat and mouse until the throne room, the fool kept on shouting his way through, maybe he should have been an assassin considering how he managed to avoid everything and everyone. He bumped into the man that was just entering the throne room, probably the next one that was called and as he made it inside the room he stopped dead center in front of the throne where he found the young queen. – Message for the que… - He did not even got to finish the sentence as he was tackled by an army of guards, all pilling up on top of him, all you could see of Tom was a foot and the extended arm with the envelope.

The young Queen was growing ever impatient with how many petitioners she still had left, and the day was still quite young. There was an itch on her bottom that she wished to scratch. Her undergarments were a bit too tight for her liking. It must have been a growth spurt of a kind, for weeks before they were perfectly fitted to her body. But she dared not move to do so for fear of humiliating herself in front of her people and others, as much as she wished to scratch at that itch.

    Puñeta! Don't scratch. Don't scratch. Don't scratch!

There were sounds coming from beyond the doors of the Castle's throne room towards the entrance. Further down, the people turned to look at what the commotion was all about until eventually, everyone was looking and moving out of the line to get a better look. Guards shouted and the line parted as a dirty man ran past them all. All Eulalia heard was something about a message before the man was tackled by the Castle guards.

"What is the meaning of this abrupt interruption?" Eulaila uncrossed her legs, placed her hands on the arms of the thrones and stood up to full height, raising her chin a little and clasping her hands in front of her. She actually found the sudden entry a bit exciting, things had begun to grow quite boring.

They all threw themselves on top of the man. Eulalia winced, for surely the armor that the guards wore abundantly weighed the poor messenger down, practically crushing him. One by one, they removed themselves and picked up the slender man. The letter fell from his hands and onto the floor. They were shouting things in the Angkarian language, all in the name of the Queen as they restrained him. Eulalia rolled her eyes.

"That is enough," she spoke in a heavy accent, "Let the man go. Surely such a man cannot mean harm to the Queen?" Looking the messenger up and down as if to prove her point. The man seemed hardly capable of murder, or being an assassin. Then again, looks could be deceiving.

    "What is your name?"

Outch, outch…. Ohhh, mind your hands pal, that’s my… treasure. The guards were crushing him down, just a bit, luckily they were also crushing down themselves so the guards began to move from his person, but it was not like they were letting him go. – Outch! That’s my arm buddy… no need to break it. The letter! – He shouted as the envelope fell on the floor, but the guards would not let him go, until of course the Queen spoke. She had an accent, and heavy one at that, but it took only a few words for the guards to release his arm. –There we go, see, that was not that hard. – He felt something running down his nose and has his gloved hand went to scratch it he realized he was bleeding. However as he gazed at the blood stained glove his expression was that of ‘could have been worse’ and he shrugged it off.

With his cleaner glove he picked up the envelope and looked back to the guards. – Back off buddy. - He even snapped his teeth at them, making fun of the situation. – I have an important message. – Or so he was told. With respect and a bleeding nose he turned back to the Queen and held the envelope high. – Queen… Hum… Your highass*! My name is Thomas Windrunner and I have been assigned with a quest of great importance! To give you this letter! I have been running almost nonstop from Morrim to here for the past two days. – That last statement caused some laugher and mockery, surely the blond man was lying. - What?

Should the Queen decide to take the letter she would find the important message inside. This story however did not begin two days ago in Morrim, it actually began in a tavern on a small town in the country of Soto, eleven days ago…

    -

A group of four people were by a table, drinking and playing cards and there was a fifth person in a hood that was also paying attention to the card game. They were all being loud and brash, overall seemed like a friendly bunch, then there was some silence and the final play came. The blond man in his fifties, with hair by his shoulders, thick beard and deep blue eyes was staring at the cards, thinking on what he should do. He gazed at the scruffy looking red haired man, there was a devious grin.

    - I call ya bluff, you lying no good cheater! – Said the blond man and threw some gold on the pot.
    - Windrunner you fool, read them and weep! – The red haired man showed his cards.
    - Wind… damn it!!! – The blond man threw his cards on the table, angry about losing. All out laughter broke out. Well, all laughed accept for the one that lost.
    - Ya know Hawk, maybe it’s no surprise your son his dumb as wood. You are not too bright either! – More laughter broke out but the blond man did not find it that funny.
    - Jeke! Wind curse your salty bottom, ya don’t talk about another man’s son like that! Take that back! – Hawk demanded it, pointing his finger.
    - You know I’m right Hawk, Tom is as dumb as they come, even you said it.
    - I’m his pop, I can say what I want about my son. Tom is a good kid and there is plenty he can do. I bet he outrun any man alive!
    - Haven’t you lost enough coin already Hawk?
    - No!!! Let’s make this a wager Jeke! – With that he turned to the one standing by the wall. – Skinner where did you say Tom was?
    - Morrim Hawk, your son is in Morrim at the moment. – The hooded man said in a creepy and mysterious tone.
    - Right! I remember, let me see… - He gave it some thought as he started to ready his smoking pipe. – Ah! I bet you Thomas can run from Morrim to Angkar in two days, no more.

Of course everyone in the group started laughing, well maybe not everyone, Hawk was dead serious and Skinner did not say or do anything. After things calmed down Jeke, the red haired man, stared Hawk down, knowing he was serious, at least about the wager.

    - I’m in Hawk!
    - Meee… me t-too! – Said a chubby looking fellow next to Jeke.
    - You can also count that I’m taking part on that bet Hawk. – Said the man with the short dark hair.
    - Of course you are Glasser, we all are, right Skinner? – Said Jeke, looking at the hooded man by the wall.
    - Sorry Jeke, I’m with Hawk. I think Tom can pull it off…
    - It’s your coin Skinner. Now! How do we do this, we need to make sure there is no cheating here? I’m going to invest a lot of gold in this. And Skinner cannot be the one tracking Tom, he’s betting on him.

Jeke voiced his concern and soon after the whole group shared his opinion. There was a pause, there was drinking and they all stared at each other looking for a solution, time passed. Hawk was smoking his pipe, leaning back on the chair when an idea came to mind.

    - I got it! We have a town official in Morrim sign a letter and date it!
    - How the heck are you going to have a town official sign on a wager? – Asked a reluctant Jeke.
    - Simple, there is no wager. We make like we are a time keeping guild, something scholar like, you know? We need a name.
    - H-how ab-about t-the t-t-time guild? – Said the chubby man, but immediately he was slapped in the back of the head by Jeke.
    - Shut up Guinness!
    - Yes… shut up Guinness, that was stupid! – Said Glasser from the other side of the table.
    - No, that’s it! – Pointed Hawk to Guinness. – Why don’t we call it the “Guinness Measurements and Time Keeping Guild”? A long name like that is sure to sound official right? Now, get a parchment!!!
    - I got it! - Said Glasser.
    - Write the following, in good hand writing!

    “Queen Eulalia Astharoshe,

The Guinness Measurements and Time Keeping Guild, makes this letter reach your highness via a very special courier. It is our goal to track the achievements of this world and today we are set to measure if it is possible for a human to make its way from Morrim to Angkar in less than two days. By the Morrim’s town official signature and the date on this letter it is up to your highness to make this record official.

If indeed the courier Thomas Windrunner stands before you only two days after, please sign this letter and return it to the courier with instructions to deliver the letter back to the town official in Morrim at the pace he desires.

Also, Thomas Windrunner is not aware of the contents of this letter and therefore cannot be held accounted responsible for the Guinness Measurements and Time Keeping Guild’s actions. If possible treat Thomas to a bath and a warm meal. If he made it in time he will probably be needing both.

    Sincerely,
Guinness Measurements and Time Keeping Guild”

    -

Two days ago, Skinner handed the signed letter to Tom, and the rest is history… Now Tom stands before Queen Eulalia Astharoshe, as she reads through this ridiculous plot that a group of drunk man came up with and convinced an honest man that the message inside was important. Not to mention he did it all for a few pieces of gold, that while for him were the best payout he ever got, they came in short when in comparison for his achievement. Of course like the idiot he was, he lingered around with a bloody nose, almost out of breath but hopping to know what was to the eyes of a Queen only. Or was it?

*highness – Another word Thomas struggled with. Honest mistake really, royalty usually sits their bottoms high.

"You look a mess, Thomas Windrunner," she stated with amusement. How could such a man go through that much trouble to deliver a message? Surely it must have been of great importance. "Navarez."

A great man with dark hair and eyes wearing dark armor walked up to Thomas and held out his hand. When the letter was given to Navarez, he opened the letter as he walked up to the Queen's throne, facing Eulalia, his back to Thomas. In Angkarian, he began to read it out loud. The Queen was perfectly capable of reading her own letters, but it had been Navarez's decision to read it out loud for her, a decision that she would not take from him for fear of bruising his Ego in front of the court. She knew well enough just how much Navarez enjoyed flaunting his authority in front of a crowd whenever he could. Although it irked her that he did not let her read it herself.

She almost laughed at the word, highass.

Navarez was not even halfway through the letter when muffled chuckles and giggles and snorts came from the line of people waiting to be heard by the Queen.

The contents of the letter were disturbing and asinine, so much so that it made Navarez go red in the face in trying to contain himself from outright laughing out loud. But the Queen? No, she did not laugh. She did not even feel an ounce of humor within her core, for she did not find that what the written letter was humorous in any way. Someone apparently found it funny to take advantage of a good however simple man and mock him and the Queen and waste her time, as well! The Queen's cheeks became pink, but not for the same reason that everyone else had.

"¡Silencio (silence)!" She shouted in Angkarian, so that the courier could not understand, although it was a fairly easy word to translate even though she did not think the man bright enough to do so. Immediately, the laughter died away, and Eulalia gestured for Navarez to continue reading the letter. Upon reaching its end, there was a long silence as Eulalia thought carefully on what to do about this situation.

"Ése nombre es el mas peor formado que he escuchado en toda mi vida (that is the worst made up name I have ever heard of)," she rolled her eyes and crossed her arms as she spoke to Navarez in an irritated tone. "Who gave you this letter?"

The man looked awful, with bags under his eyes and his shoes in horrendous condition. He looked as though he hadn't eaten or slept, and if it was true that it was his attempt to arrive in Ildri, the Capital of Angkar, within two day's time, he would be far beyond weary and hungry and in dire need of a bath. Eulalia did not breathe through her nose for fear of what she might smell. Then, she walked towards him, and this time, without the thought of possibly being assassinated. The closer she grew to him, the worse she found his condition.

"I apologize for my guards," she laughed, "they can be such brutes." Eulalia managed a kind smile. "You ran all the way from Morrim to here in less than two day's time, did you?"

Esos monstruos! Voy a encontrarlos y colgar a todos! (Those monsters! I will find them and hang them all!)

    - I am glad to be a mess! My task was important and I would gladly do it again! – He said it almost like a soldier truly convicted what he had done today was great, possibly saving the life’s of many people, a true hero. He gave the letter to the man in the back armor, then man turned around to face the Queen and began to read the letter out loud. He knew that the language they were speaking must be a local one, he had heard it, and the strange thing however was how familiar the sounds felt. If he had ever dedicated any amount of time in learning it he would probably pick it up rather quickly. Reason being he was born in the island and raised there until he was five, of course he did not know this, another thing Hawk told him but he never paid attention to.

He looked around when some people started to laugh, what’s so funny about it? Can’t you see this information is important? Right? For a moment he doubted it, but when the Queen made her voice heard and silenced the room he knew that there was no reason to be concerned. The silence that followed at the end of the reading only made that feeling creep in deeper. Now what? They must be thinking hard on the information they received. Of course, they are the smart ones so they need to think hard before acting. He found himself nodding.

Queen Eulalia said something else to the man in black armor, probably the orders to carry out. Then she demanded to know who gave him the letter. – I… I… it was a man in a hood, he did not give his name and I barely had a look at his face. I figured this message was so important the man had to hide, or else they would get him and kill him. – Skinner had been quick to convince Tom to run, he had been played well not that it was a hard thing to achieve, the few lousy pieces of gold given were a fortune to him. He would probably spend it in a blink of an eye, but that was Tom, live fast and luck out on death.

Then the young Queen graced him with her presence, she was kind to him, and showed concern. – Please, don’t apologize for your guards. They were doing their job, if anything I should apologize. I was not expecting to see so many people and in panic of being late I ran through. – He nodded to her question. – I did, it was tough but when you know the best trails it is not as hard as you think. – He looked down at his boots. – All I need now is to get my boots repaired and I’m good for another run. – He chuckled and gave the Queen a stupid smile, even in the mess he was he was still that ray of sun, he did not care. What he did care was making sure it was all good. – I’m not important, what is important is that the message was delivered in time. Did it? Is everything going to be fine? – He gazed at the Queen hopping to hear the words that what he did was important, that millions were saved by his efforts, the confirmation that today he had been the hero of a nation. It was written on his face, it could be seen clearly in his yes, he was hopeful.

"Walk with me," she nodded with an amused smile and turned away from Thomas. Navarez turned pale at the words and kept glancing from the line of people to Eulalia, whom simply kept on walking away. Navarez would simply have to turn the people away for them to return another day. She passed the throne an exited through one of the backdoors that lead to the Kitchen.

The Queen's bronze heels clacked against the steppingstone and reverberated against the walls of the hall. Her regal demeanor began to fade ever so slightly as she relaxed. By this point, Eulaila's wrath had diminished to meek frustration, and yet, she could not help but feel for the victim, Thomas, whom had been played by someone ballsy enough to have done it.

The person that had delivered the letter to Thomas had hidden his face underneath a hood and made it seem important enough to make the poor man run non-stop for almost two days. She wondered if he could run faster than a horse could gallop, or swim faster than a ship could sail. Although Eulalia felt sorry for him, she admired him and held great respect for someone who could arrive in Angkar all the way from another country in so little time. Normally, the trip would take several days, and yet Thomas had done something that seemed impossible to do. There was a slight amount of doubt in the back of her mind, but he seemed too straightforward and humble to lie about the circumstances.

It must have been a strange sight, a Queen and a ragtag runner walking together, side-by-side.

“That letter… was more important than you can possibly begin to imagine, my friend,” she found herself lying, and would probably keep lying about the contents of the letter. “Such information will save many lives, I can assure you.” It was difficult to lie, but she did not wish to crush his spirits, which seemed so high. Looking at him, she could practically feel the joy that he felt in doing a job well done and also thinking that he might have done some good. He would probably never know the truth. “And it is thanks to you that it arrived in such a timely manner. You must be a celebrated courier in Morirm.”

Now he was walking with the Queen, he pumped his chest out, and held his chin high, it seemed he was important today, the real deal. Maybe this is not over yet, they need me to go out and deliver something else. Or maybe, they want to give me a fancy title, a celebration in my name. That would be the best thing ever, but it's alright if it is just more important work. A smile grew on his lips, and he followed the Queen without word or question, after all she was the Queen of an entire nation, it was probably the most important person he ever had the chance to meet, let alone talk with.

Then his keen nose picked on something, food?, and he questioned himself why was that, as they entered through the back door of the kitchen it all became clear to him. Oh man... we are going to use a secret passage to get to some secret room only the most trusted men get to, she must have me in high regard. Angkar is my favorite nation now! Thank you wind, thank you! His smile turned toothy, sure he was before the Queen but he simply could not help it. She was yet to respond to his question but even he could understand that some matters are too private. But the was read letter out loud. OF COURSE! It was one of those codhead* messages, in case they captured me. That is why people were laughing, they could not understand. The Queen is smart, after all she is the Queen.

When the Queen spoke to him again all grim doubt was swiped away from his mind, he was the hero. His effort was indeed going to save lives and his feet stopped walking for a moment. He held his arms up high, hands turned into firm fists, and as he looked up tears of joy started to roll down on his dirty face. - Thank you wind! Thank you for helping me! - He let out a good heartened chuckle and began to do a little celebration, a little tap dance of sorts, he was so high on the moment that he was about to reach out and take the Queen's arms to dance along with her. Still when he started making the motion he remembered who she was and more importantly he remembered who he was, where he was. Such was not the behavior of a hero, he cleared his throat and looked to the side, just slightly embarrassed, but you could still see him smiling.

The Queen took his little outburst in the best way possible, and he felt mentally relieved she did. - Well I don't mean to brag, but I don't like to think of myself as a courier of Morrim. I am... - He extended his right arm and pointed his gloved finger, it collided with a piece of smoked ham that was hanging from the ceiling. He quickly retracted his finger and cleaned it on the shirt, well maybe it was now more dirty than it was before considering how dirty all of he was. He made a slily shrug, “oops” like expression and redid the gesture, avoiding colliding with anything this time. - … a hero of the world. A man without a land, a traveling merchant, a running courier, a nomad that follows the wind. I am Thomas Windrunner! - He finally said, making a hero pose with his hands on his waist, looking somewhere into the distance, but finally he relaxed and turned to the Eulalia, simply saying in a more modest tone. - But you can call me Tom, everyone else does.

Even Tom did not know what his place in the world was, but you could say he was happy. His goals were simple, even if he was broke almost all the time, coin was not a concern, he could hunt for... fruit, and lean on people for ale, he did not care. A simple life, full of thrills, perils, adventures and a great deal of freedom. Tom reached out to carefully extract from the inside of his vest the disgusting thing that was his journal. - This right here!.. - He slapped the cover and dust escaped everywhere, he twitched his nose but avoided sneezing. - This is my traveling journal, it has all my adventures to date. Sure there is nothing written in it, because... well I can write my name, but anything else is complicated. Hawk tried to teach me, but it was too hard... - He paused for a moment, and then snapped his fingers. - Ah! Yes, but this is where I keep track of my adventures, using something as a reminder. Can be a leaf, a pebble... What to hear a story? - He said hopeful, but remembered the next moment the one before him was not just a young adult, but the Queen of Angkar. His eyes turned sad and gazed at the ground. - Oh right! You must be busy, being the Queen and all... Hum, am I to be bestoled** with another quest?

When Thomas broke into a little dance, almost taking the Queen in his arms, she smiled, happy to see how carefree he was around her. Other people were not so generous. They treated her like a true and proper Queen, bowing and avoiding any form of insult for fear of retaliation. For a moment, Eulalia thought that Thomas wouldn't act like everyone else, but then he retracted as he seemed to recall whom he was with. That was when Eulalia picked up the skirt of her dress, tapped her feet on the floor and did a little dance number around Thomas before regaining her composure.

"I like to dance, too," she laughed.

Thomas pointed his finger high and his dirty hand collided with a piece of ham which hung down from the ceiling on a hook. Eulalia's nose crinkled before she giggled at him. When he was done announcing his tittles to her, the young Queen clapped at the performance. "I like Thomas better than Tom," she said. "You can have that ham, Thomas. After all, you must be hungry." Eulalia turned away from him to look around the kitchen for pastries. There were several on the table, sitting on a wooden board. She took the board with the pastries on top and presented them to him just as she devoured one whole. "Have you ever had an Angkarian apple tart? They're made by our finest chefs. Quite delicious if I do say so myself. Try one!"

Thomas went on a rant about a dirty journal he pulled out from his clothes. He talked about how he kept track of his quests, even though he could not write, by simply using objects as memorabilia in place of where words would have been inked into the parchment.

"I would love to hear a story from you," she said. "Come." Eulalia took his hand and dragged him to a chair. "Sit." She placed the pastries on the table and she sat across form him, stuffing another pastry into her mouth. "Go on," she spoke with her mouth full.

    - Really I can take the ham?... – He said out of surprise, not really stopping to think that his dirty finger might have been the reason why he was being offered the giant piece of ham. Something else quickly caught his attention however and he snapped back to it. - Apple tart!!! – Oh did he want a piece! He wanted all the pieces. – Do I love, oh! You have no idea… - He said as he quickly reached out and took two pieces and shoved them in his “pie hole”. – Ah wove dis!!! – He said in between chews and when he swallowed he used his fist to hit the chest so it would all go down. – Apples are my favorite fruit and I think Angkar has the best apples! There is something about this place that I like, I wonder why… - He shrugged and took another piece.

He was of course very surprised when the Queen wanted to hear a story from him, such an important person and she wanted to listen to his nonsense. Hardly anyone would put up with his shenanigans, and yet there was a person of such prestige that did want to hear him ramble about his travels. Regardless of his pitiful state she took his hand gently and led him to a chair. She did not have to show such kindness or were the contents of the letter THAT important? Maybe they were, why else would a Queen make the time of her day to sit down and listen to a fool such as he? As Tom sat down, everyone could see it clearly how tired he really was, even himself, he felt like his body had doubled in weight as he sat, and he aged ten years. – Oh, it’s been a while since I sat down. Feels great… - he still managed to chuckle, in his idiot way.

    - Queen Eulalia… I’m sorry for what I’m about to do, but it has been long overdue. Please find it in your heart to forgive me. - And with that apology he took off his gloves and soon after he took off the worn out boots that had carried him there. Of course his feet stank, his socks were barely nonexistent from all the holes and even he was disturbed by it. – Sorry… I will make it up with a story. – His now bare hand reached out for the journal that he rested on the table so that before he could have taken a slice of tart. – What to chose, maybe I’ll just pick a page at random. – Saying this he started unwrapping the traveling journal, and when he did he carefully opened it on one page, there a lock of vivid blond hair could be found, almost golden like. His tired expression changed, and it was a mix of happiness and sadness, he carefully picked the golden lock of hair. – Oh Jessie, we could have been happy together.

After a long sigh he looked at Eulalia, and a smile grew on his face once more, he was not going to tell a story looking sad. – This story is called “The Blackest Week”! I kind thought of it back in the day. – Another idiot like chuckle soon escaped his mouth and he reached out for another piece of tart, as his freed hand motioned all around. Thomas could be very expressive when it came to his stories, he loved telling stories to people, because it was a way to make his past more meaningful since he mostly lived in the now, so telling the history behind his actions was a nice change of pace.

    - So… It all started with my stomach rumbling, complaining about being hungry and to be honest I was very hungry but even with my backpack filled with apples, I was looking for something with more… meat! So I drew my bow and knocked an arrow into it, I then prowled for my prey, my eyes were sharp, my pace steady, I was using my secret invisibility technique, nothing was getting between me and my meal! – He grinned, as if he was seeing it, but if fact what happened was the opposite of what he was describing, or mostly the opposite. – I was deep in a Morrimian jungle… - He paused. – Out of coincidence, don’t think I spend that much time in Morrim… I mean, I spend a lot of time in Morrim, but I also spend a lot of time here and everywhere else… - He cleared his throat. – Is there something to drink? – He shrugged and simply continued his tale. – So, Morrim, jungle, invisible… Out in the distance my sharp eyes saw something move, I stopped and pointed my bow in that general direction. I waited… for the beast to reveal itself. Well honestly I was not expecting a beast but then a tiger actually showed up! I have to admit I was not expecting tiger, but I also never had tiger in my life so I drew and aimed. My view was clear, the aim steady, I had the tiger in my sights, but in the moment I was going to release… BEE!!! – He said loudly, trying to scare Eulalia, and laughed soon after.

The lovable adventurer with a limited intellect was stealing Eulalia’s heart little by little! When he smiled, it was like her chest opened up and the heavens poured in. Not only was he simple and gullible, but he was generous and kind. And silly. There was something about him that made him magical and delightful in ways that couldn’t be explained; perhaps it was his love and passion of life and his undying loyalty to his duties. It was extremely admirable. Such traits oftentimes were left unseen with the wealthy, and being around such a hard worker made her want to work hard, too. He was infectious. Eulalia also took a few apple tarts for herself and stuffed her face with abandon next to the commoner; tidbits were leftover on her face and dress.

Eulalia noted how he calmed and relax upon taking the seat, such a change from his upbeat demeanor as his age began to truly sow. There was also a profound sadness in his eyes, and if his vulnerability wasn’t enough to tug so hard at her heartstrings that they snapped in half—then he pulled out the golden lock of hair from the journal. It was clear that there was a story there; a story of love and heartbreak, perhaps? Eulalia’s curiosity made her want to hear it above any other story he had to share from his book of adventures—to ask who Jessie was to Thomas—but she held herself back from being uncouth.

“Please,” she said. “Call me Lilly. That is what my friends call me.”

That is what you are, my friend.

He tried to apologize for getting comfortable by taking off his shoes and stinking up the place, but she shrugged it off and did her best to smile. She couldn’t hide the small crinkle in her bridge of her nose as she temporarily stopped breathing. The part of her that was raised as a Noble…. A royal… wanted to order him to put his shoes back up and to stand or bow in her presence. She might have been the Queen, but the girl wasn’t heartless. It was evident just how rough the messenger man had it; his life was rougher than she had ever experienced in her short life of being well fed, well rested, well educated, and well protected. It was simple; Eulalia pitied his standard of living compared to her own lavishing lifestyle.

She found herself tracing the features of his face—his large jaw, his bulky nose, and his thick brows—they were all rather familiar physical traits. Much like herself, he had the skin color to match any hair and eye color. The blue eyes and blonde hair combination were rare in Angkar, but not completely unheard of. Some locals claimed that such a combination was a sign of pure blood, dating back to the earliest ancestors of the island. Others, however, thought that it was a trait inherited from other countries. Eulalia thought that he looked far too much like a native of Angkar to be from Morrim. Or perhaps these were just the playful fantasies of a lady with a handsome, hardened man in her presence.

Eulalia mentally catalogued what pieces of clothing she wanted replaced. By the end, there was nothing she didn’t want burned, antiquated, dirty, and tattered as everything was. Yes, she would have to call forth a tailor or seamstress immediately, provide Thomas an entire wardrobe, whatever he liked, as long as it wasn’t brown, as it was the most common and most boring color….

Eulalia went to fetch a wooden cup; that is what the servants used to drink. She filled it with water from a water barrel that was in the room and returned to Thomas with the glass, setting it before him on the table before sitting back down. She was listening intently to what sounded like a grave and enterprising story, when suddenly it took a turn for the humorous as he revealed that a bee was to be his ruin, and loudly at that.

The young Queen jumped in her seat, startled, and she laughed. Normally, her laugh might have been restrained, charming, magical, as the laugh of a Queen should be, but this laugh was different; uninhibited, wholeheartedly sincere, and with plenty of snorts with nearly every breath she took. She nearly fell over on her seat and she reached out to him, placing a hand on his arm to keep herself steady and in place.

“A bee! How splendid! Oh, you are so delightful.” Eulalia took a breath and stood.

“Now, how does a hot bath sound to you? It sounds perfect to me, quite frankly. It’s about that time of the day, is it not?” She was mainly asking herself, wondering if it was past noon yet. Eulalia did not plan on taking a bath herself, but she needed to quench the urge to dip him in water to scrub every inch of him he was so dirty! Of course, that would not be of her own doing; a Queen always had others do the dirty work for her.

At that moment, a servant entered the room; the girl was young and plain looking with servant’s attire and her hair done up in a neat bun. Eulalia felt bad that she couldn’t put a name to the face straightaway, but it was somewhat difficult to remember the dozens of servants that ran around the castle day in and day out. She managed to remember who she was in the end; Harley. They had startled her, as Harley obviously had not expected anyone to be in the kitchen as of yet. The servant bowed to the Queen and greeted her appropriately.

“Yes, always with the pleasantries,” she smiled to Thomas, as if to share a joke, then turned to the survant, “Harley, ¿serías tan amable de encontrar a Luli para mí? Tengo un nuevo proyecto para ella. Y consigue a alguien para preparar la cabaña inmediatamente, por favor.” (Harley, would you be a dear and find Luli for me? I have a new project in store for her. And get somebody to prepare the bathhouse immediately, please.)

When the servant left the room, she turned to look back and Thomas, and those features of his distracted her once again.

“If I may be so bold as to ask…. Where are you from, Thomas? You do not have to share if you do not wish, but I am simply curious because you look as though you belong right here on this island, and it would not be wise of me to make assumptions.”

A friend? That was a word that Tom used very lightly, it was a word he used when coming up to a stranger and call him friend to ask him for a pint of ale, it was a word he used when battering goods with another trader, it was just a word with a loose meaning to someone that was not in the same place for more than a day. As loosely as he used the word, it was a word he often didn't heard back, however, when the Queen spoke it, it stuck in his mind, she wants to be my friend? A true friend? Then he was jumping mentally, he is friends with a Queen, not just any Queen, but the one to the Nation he just decided it was his favorite! Now there was something to brag about, he thought about it, but like many of his lies, this one was also hard for people other than little children to believe. Not only as the queen called him a friend, but told him to call her by Lilly! He decided it then, he would never tell anyone he was friends with the Queen of Angkar, he would never tell anyone he was friends with Lilly. It was the beginning of what he thought to be a special relationship, it was something to treasure, not share. He simply smiled widely and nodded at Lilly, he would treasure this friendship forever!

    - Yes a bee! It threw my aim way off… - he chuckled along side with Lilly, not really understanding he had been complimented, but he was like that, with everything but when telling stories he truly relived those moments, so when he was asked if he wanted a bath, the question caught him off guard. What was Lilly really saying? A quick look at his feet was all it took for him to understand, he stank… he was dirty and even before the journey he had probably not bathed for a week. Felt the skin on his face, he could use a shave also, and without shame or second thought he smelled himself. – Hum… you might be onto something. – The understatement of the understatements. – You think it’s alright? – He looked around, trying to see if by any chance he had no missed a bathtub, but no, nothing like that was around and they were in the kitchen. A place that may have a secret passage to a war room of sorts he might add, but that secret was safe with him.

A servant came into the room, normally Tom’s brain would go into frenzy when at the sight of a woman, but not this time around, he was with Lilly, a friend and a Queen, it was more than enough for him to behave. The woman was surprised to see them there in the kitchen and Tom just smiled and waved this woman in a friendly way, but the woman simply bowed, how pumped his chest became of course the bow was directed to the Queen but he failed to think that far. He also failed to see the joke in Lilly’s words, but he smiled back, a silly yet confused smiled. Lilly asked something of Harley, at least he thought she was asking something, he understood fragments of the conversation. Before Harley left them, Tom decided to try using the little Angkarian he knew. – If por favor tu puedes trazer lo ale, I estarey thanks!* - The water was nice, but ale was just better, Harley looked confused but because the server was probably fluent in more than just Angkarian she understood what Tom had meant and finally left them two alone, Tom was pleased.

He was going to continue with the story of the blackest week, but instead he was surprised by Lilly’s question. His first thought was to lie about it, then it was to excuse himself but in the end he decided to tell exactly as things were. What kind of friend would he be if at the first chance he would lie? No friend anyone would want, he could not forge a friendship with lies, and sooner or later it would turn sour. – I… forgot. – He said with a less than happy tone. – Hawk must have told me back then, but I was always a rascal as a kid, too easy it was to just run with the wind than stay still and listen. I don’t know where I was born, who my mother is… I don’t even remember how old I am. I guess I am… two decades old? Maybe more! – He shrugged and finished the water since the conversation about his forgetfulness had left his mouth dry. He could not stay gloomy for long, it was against his nature. – Who cares where I am from anyway, I am a Windrunner a proud family that chases the wind, like Hawk, so too are my eyes blue, my hair blond, we might not be native to any nation. I was born in this world, and I love it, that must be why I never stay in one place for long, because I am not from anywhere! – He chuckled and he was back to the usual Tom he was.

With that silly smile he turned to Lilly and whispered. – Also… this is where the story starts getting interesting. – He chuckled, leaning back on the chair. – Of course after missing the shot, the tiger saw me and I got scared. That thing was twice my size and possible as heavy as… heavy things are, you know? So when something like that starts running at you… well… I was scared and not proud to say it. I tried to ready my bow, but I trembled and I think, as that thing pounced upon me, I swigged the arrow in my hand at jabbed it in its neck. Then I blacked out. – He lingered on the silence adding suspense to the story. – But you see me here, you know I was alright. It came down dead on me, his jaw fell on my jaw and… - He reached his mouth with his dirty finger and showed Lilly that he was missing a molar. - …broke my tooth, but considering what could have happened, I take a broken tooth every day! – He chuckled once more, always so fun it was for him to tell his tales, especially when it amused other people, the shenanigans of his life. – Tiger is not a good thing to eat by the way… that or I cooked it wrong, but the pelt however I knew it would be worth my while. I was going to use the broken too, to remember my adventure but a wagon passed by, and since I was carrying the tigers pelt, I took the chance and asked for a ride to town. The pelt got me some coin, and with coin I headed to the town’s tavern… there I met her. – His smile widen, as if he was remembering it.

*If you could bring me ale, I would be thankful.

Thomas told the maid, in a broken Angkarian accent, if Harley could bring Ale. Eulalia was taken aback by his answer. The story man had no origin story to tell? That was rather... Odd and unusual. Though, once he stated his reasoning,,she began to understand just why he kept the wind at his back. He did not remember where he was born or where he is from; he did not even recall having a family! Perhaps if he did, Thomas might take the pleasure of remaining in one place for more than a day or two-- maybe then he would have a place to call Home.

Thomas continued with his story, and as fascinating the story about the tiger was, Eulalia took a deep interest in the next one.

"Fantastico! Such a grand display of courage, Thomas. You are a lucky man to be alive. Maybe our cooks here can show you how to properly cook the meat from a tiger. Such wonderful cooks we have here."

The look in his eyes captivated her for a moment; one beautiful moment in which she saw the wholeheartedly pure emotion known as love as he mentioned meeting a woman in the tavern. There was a story just in his expressive eyes, which shone in a profound way. Lucky was the woman a man had this look for. Eulalia knew that she had never been looked at in such a way. During that time, Harley had sneaked back into the room, as quiet as a mouse, and left for them a bottle of ale and two proper cups. She had even taken the initiative to fill them up.

"Who was she?" Eulalia's eyes sparkled with interest, her voice making her sound as though she were in awe, as she kind of was. It was hard not to be around an animated man such as Thomas.
