Above the rooftops of Madrid, a yellow crescent moon was on the rise. Framed by the looming mountains on the horizon, the feeble little sickle appeared to be fantastically close to the earth below. Somewhere, someone was probably trying to jump high enough to touch it. Figures outlined by golden firelight stood at their windows, looking out placidly upon the scene below. The smoke of their pipes curled like ashen serpents, entwining and spiraling in on itself unto nothingness. Some of them turned their labor-weary necks down towards the streets below. There, a shadow walked between abandoned merchant stalls and forgotten carts. At the figure’s heels trailed the dust of many travels. The stray street dogs recoiled as the visitor passed by, sensing the aura of foreboding radiating from the figure’s person. One of the dogs grew bold and started gruffly towards the figure, lips pulled back in a snarl. Before it had taken three steps, a trio of ravens swept down from the rooftops and beat their wings in its face. Bewildered, it turned with its tail between its legs and ran off into an alleyway. The ravens cawed in ominous warning as they flocked back to the roof. It had been a long time since the tiefling had ventured to Madrid, his previous appearance having been in the search of more legal career opportunities. The city had hardly changed after his last visit. The fountain in the square still bubbled in its limpid pool. Illuminated by moonlight, the stone statue of the fountain was thrown into shadowy half-light. Jey let his fingers trail across the edge of the stone and skim over the surface of the pool. He sighed, pushing unrequited memories to the back of his mind. After all, he had not come to this place for bittersweet and nostalgia. It was for thrill and excitement that he had made the journey to Madrid, hoping to stir up some mischief in the tavern. He had even come dressed for the occasion. He did not wish to make himself the object of gossip and question before he finished his task. Likewise, Madrid was not a place much accustomed to the presence of tieflings in its alehouses. Thus, as he had reached the outskirts of the town earlier that evening, Jey had donned a hooded cloak, stolen from one of the wealthier citizens earlier in the day. Now, he walked through the streets anonymously, appearing to be nothing more than a mere inconspicuous traveler. The floor length cloak flared out around his boots as he walked into the basking light of the tavern, a befanged smirk dotting his face. As he slung open the tavern door he ponderd on how this kind of mischief was now all a part of his weekly routine. The tavern was sparkly occupied with its usual patrons. Commoners lounged after a long day of work, travelers and adventurers sat telling their exaggerated tales, and the alcoholics slumped over the counters with their heads lolling. At a large table in the center of the room, several men were playing a game of cards. One of them leapt up yelling with excitement. He tipped over his glass of ale and shouted as it tipped over in his lap. His companions howled with laughter, and the sneakiest among them took the opportunity to steal gold out of the pot. Jey grinned despite himself, finding mundane amusement in the ordeal. The laughter of friends seemed suddenly so innocent, so normal. He had almost forgotten the sound of it himself. Although the laughter warmed his heart, he had not forgotten his trickster’s intentions. Commoners were very much susceptible to illusions and games, especially when intoxicated, and Jey knew that he needed only sit and wait for one of them to come to him. Slowly crossing the room, he found an unoccupied table near the blazing hearth. Laughter swarmed through the tavern, filling the bare rafters with ghostly echoes. Presently, he found himself smiling along, reveling in the sheer simplicity of this retouched past. He began to reminisce again, and almost didn’t hear the sound of voices as they drew him back into reality. Edited by Jey, May 12 2014, 09:17 PM.

It was a good night for a walk, while not the perfect moon the pale yellow of the small crescent moon made it a night dark, just like she liked it. If one was to pay attention, there were small glimpses of shadows on the rooftops, two figures jumping from roof to roof. With subtle motions the two figures jumped down, their hooded cloaks flailing in the air before settling down as the shadows landed on the ground of the city. It was a dark back alley and rising from the ground this first hooded figure had a distinct purple glow in her eyes, while the other had the predatory glow of a feline in his. They had made it inside the city without the guards learning of their presence, it would seem all was going as planned. - Stray, feeling anything suspicious? – Said Shiver, looking very wary of her surroundings. - Hum… Nothing out of the ordinary Shiver... – Replied Stray Cat that was tagging behind after sniffing out the air. He had a way with words as they seemed to linger in the air for a long time after he spoke. - Good then, all is well. They started making their way towards the main streets, the feline humanoid following the steady lead of his mistress. As they made it to the streets Shiver took the Jo staff from her back and started to use it as a walking staff. They made sure to walk every shadow as possible and only the sharp people would actually notice the pair that was roaming the streets. They were both experienced practitioners of the art of stealth and they had come there with a clear goal, after which they would leave the city as silent as they had come. That was the plan at least. - So Stray where is this tavern? - Hum…. Ahh… It is… - Yes?... – Shiver stopped at her tracks, turning around and gazing back at Stray with an heavy frown, her purple glowing eyes squinting immensely and would emit but a faint glow. - I… hum… I forgot… - What?! – Her voice rose slightly, but not a great deal as both of them were doing nothing but whispering. Shiver became more blurry from the anger felt by disappointment and knocked the other in the head with her Jo staff. – I come out here to make a deal and thou forget where we are meeting? I am sadly disappointed. - I… am sorry Shiver. – Stray looked down at the ground, scratching the head where Shiver had hit him. He was embarrassed to be failing his Lady. - Not yet, you will be however. – She tightened a fist with her left hand, blurring ever more so. Clearly the purple shade was annoyed, but then she regained her normal appearance. – This is a big city and it won’t be night for long. I shall take the south part of the city, where we conveniently are. Thee on the other hand, shalt go north. Thou remember the deal? - Of course Shiver… hum… I shall not fail you. - I know thou won’t. Saluting his mistress, Stray climbed the wall and made for the roofs, making his way north as swiftly and stealthy as possible. Shiver’s sharp night eyes followed the feline subordinate until he broke line of sight. She grinned, having great admiration for Stray she would not be too hard on him, but then again she could not go soft, not on him or anyone that she ruled over. Without further lingering, she made her way to the first tavern. An incredible sense of disgust overwhelmed her just as she entered, the appalling sight of peasants, being loud, drunk and… just plain filthy. What bothered her more, was that chances were that she had to visit a few more of these places before she found what she had came to look for. As she removed the hood from her head, revealing her girlish face, she hopped that luck would be on her side, but instead some fat drunk came to her. - What a cute little lady. So exotic… The disgusting man, with the ale stained shirt, had the audacity to start and reach out for her shoulder. It was like time had frozen, she stopped listening to what was coming out of the man’s mouth, as all she saw were his rotten teeth, the strings of saliva stuck in between them and his dirty hand reaching for her that had the fungus infected nails. She would have nothing of that and she let go of her staff, the balance was so perfect that it lingered in a upright position for quite some time before it started to fall to the right. Meanwhile Shiver performed a frontal left kick, aimed at the lower leg of the man, and he immediately feel down on the knee. Then she grabbed him by the shirt with the left hand and with only a few punches of her right gloved fist she crushed bone and sinew, considering the glove had a metal frame designed for the purpose of punching, the damage was brutal. - THOU… DISGUST… MEEE!!! She said it slowly, speaking through her almost closed lips, blurring a great deal she spat on his now poor excuse for a face, teeth and jaw broken and bloody. It was not polite at all for a lady such as her to spit on another’s face, despite social standing, but then again, tonight she was not Madgaleina Thelsote’ket, she was Shiver. After shoving the man to the corner her right hand reached out just in time to catch the falling staff. Some people turned their heads to her, to the man on the floor and back at her, surprise was the common denominator on their faces. She gazed back and most people went back to their business, like nothing had happened. Some blond man that had spilled his drink was cursing the wind and made his way out of the card table he was gambling on, and as she continued to gaze upon the room her eyes lingered on the one that kept gazing back. Was he her contact? Unsure. |

The fiend-blooded male was among those who turned to look at the commotion, his stare lacking the dumbfounded and shell-shocked expression exhibited by some of the other patrons. His vivid violet eyes were hidden by the shade of his cloak hood as he watched the string of clean hits connect with the man’s face. The sound of the human’s teeth and jaw shattering beneath the blows was music to his ears, amplified beyond normal perception by him offhandedly focusing on the action. His fan-like ears fluttered like butterfly wings despite himself, though the movement was invisible to those around him. Jey grinned out the corner of his mouth, a slow flashing of sharp canines in a half-baked Cheshire grin that caught the light of the hearth more readily from underneath the hood compared to the rest of him. His gaze slid languidly over to the man’s batterer, and was surprised by the visual that met him, even if only vaguely so. The femme looked young, small and lithe, appearing even more so when juxtaposed next to the gross, pudgy brute whom she had just laid a smackdown upon. Peculiar still was the femme’s appearance. Her eyes were a shade much like his own, yet darker in hue. The glow that radiated from them was no doubt a part of the allure which had drawn the human to her in the first place. The femme’s skin as well, being the color of a starless winter night in the countryside, was distinct from those around her, just like Jey’s own. Despite these circumstantial similarities however, Jey did not get the feeling that they were perhaps kin of some kind. She also did not seem at all wary of other people’s reaction to her appearance, which may have been due to her looking rather human regardless, even with her differing pigmentation. She also was probably not an outlaw like himself, which regardless of appearance, made it more necessary to cover up when in places with active city guards like Madrid. Perhaps the girl was simply touched by magic of some sort. Such a thing was far from unheard of in this place. As she then added insult to the battered man’s injury, the tiefling’s pierced brow rose in interest as she suddenly appeared to shift out of focus. Was his eyes deceiving him, or was that some form of magic? No one else seemed to have noticed the oddity, or perhaps no one else wanted to drawn the blurry, violent femme’s attention lest they end up a bloody wreak like the first guy. Jey continued to look at the girl, long after most others decided it was best to simply mind their business. With the slightest of movements, he tilted his head back to give himself a clearer view of her. The tiefling was curious, his vivid violet gaze scrutinizing as he casually lifted a red hand in the air and made a gesture to draw the woman’s attention, as well as the nearest barmaid. |

Regardless of the two bouts of unluckiness that marked the beginning of the night, one being Stray’s memory and the other the audacity of the disgusting peasants, it would seem that she was in the right place. She watched as the man near the fire called out to her with a hand gesture, chances were the man was her contact. Still two things made her frown a bit, firstly was the fact that the invitation had been too bold, not exactly fitting with what had been agreed on, but on the other hand she might have felt lost otherwise, considering the uncertainty. The other and even more annoying thing was the fire. Why did he have to sit near the fire? Could not be helped, she would have to move forth with some caution, but the way she made due with her steps inspired a great confidence. The tavern had a bit too much light, another great if not the greatest annoyance of this drunken invested place, so she made it so that the lighting would dim on the room. It was only barely noticeable, for her however every little bit helped, but still everyone could see far too much and she did catch the sneak peek some stole at her appearance, even if most of her body was covered by clothing, her face and eyes were still uncovered. She did not fear the exposure, the way she had her hair done made her look different enough to create deniability, but the attention received however, especially by this kind of social class, was upsetting. As Shiver got closer to the man she felt some anger build up inside of her for no apparent reason, other than feeling some hostility towards the hooded individual. It was even enough for her to stop to peek inside her left glove, only to confirm that indeed she was blurring more than she should. She took the moment to gaze upon the man once more, he kept himself hidden under the shadows of the hood, she could pick up a few traces and unusual features, but other than that, nothing that would explain her sudden annoyance. Finally reaching the man, Shiver nodded to him before taking a sit on the table, letting the staff rest on the table. - Pray excuse my entrance, but there are things that I simply cannot allow. Thou… Shiver was interrupted by the maid that had arrived at their table, for Shiver it could have not been a worse timing. Maybe she had come by the gesture of the other, confused by it since it clearly was meant for her. - Hello! What can I get ya for? – Said the upbeat maid, her voice made Shiver’s skin crawl. The lack of formality in the maid’s words made it so that Shiver would get extremely annoyed. - Some manners to start with, or are thou blind to see that my speech was interrupted? – Shiver spat out those words, folding her arms underneath her small chest and turning her head to the side, like a spoiled brat. - I want nothing of this infested hole you call a tavern. - Ah!.. It’s you! – Only now did the maid realize that the girl before her was the one that beat the man by the entrance. – Sorry about my manners. What about you? Anything I can get? Shiver tried to ignore the maid, in fact she would refrain from directing her word any further because she was very close to destroying something many would consider beautiful. The more she thought about the idea the more of a ring it had to her ears. The small grin crossed her face, which was a good thing since it made her feel more relaxed and consequentially less blurry. Speaking of ears, it was time to take a good look at her contact, and he sure had a noticeable pair of those. His eyes were the color violet, similar to her favorite color so without having a say in it, he was already creeping in on her good side. The rest of the man’s visage was strange to say the least, especially the ears, and judging by the movements they made it seemed they were picking up more noises than hers were. It could prove useful for her to keep track of those ears. However he was still a disgusting peasant, a resourceful one, but also an employed one, so it made her quickly lose her interest. She was there for one thing, and only that but for the time being Shiver had to allow for the maid to leave the area, there was too much at stake and everyone could be a potential menace. |

A cool smile casually stretched his lips when the tiefling saw the woman respond to his gesture and begin to make her way over to him. She was frowning, but that was to be expected given the unpleasant interaction she had just experienced immediately upon entering the establishment. Jey couldn’t blame her for being put off and not donning a smile after having some brute attempt to have his greasy mitts all over her. As the woman walked away from the scene, one of the man’s companions replaced her and called to the bartender to toss over some rags to clean up the blood. A half grin paired with a furrowed brow painted his face in an overall, ‘I told you so’ expression as he began to help his dizzied and bloody friend to his feet and back to their booth upon receiving them. Jey hadn’t taken into account the conspicuousness of his waving the woman to him, and why should he? Despite the temporary interest gained by the woman’s physical appearance and violent outburst, no one in the tavern actually cared, truth be told. This past week had been filled with hard labor that dragged on for far too long, the violent rainstorms during the daylight hours pounding out a person’s vigor, and making this weekend tavern recess all the more important. The vast majority of those present, as a result, were too caught up in chasing their pleasures or drowning their sorrows to truly commit what free time and energy they had to the wheelings and dealings of strangers. The change to the overall illumination of the tavern went unnoticed by him, chalked up to normal flickering light of the fire that was generally inconsistent anyway. He half turned towards the hearth then, allowing the warmth to pierce the veil of darkness cast by his hood. The heat felt nice against his skin, and the sound of the crackling fire was soothing, and easily drowned out the din of the establishment if he focused on it enough. There was a symphony of sound to be heard there, though it existed at frequencies unknown to most everyone else within earshot. A song that was being sung for only to those with the ears to hear it, and in Jey’s mind, that equated to a performance specifically for him. He could feel himself being lulled into a trance of sorts, a focus where his mind would drift to his more pleasant fantasies before eventually to sleep. Until the more interesting of the two women he had called over actually arrived at his table. She began to speak and the tiefling blinked, bright eyes flicking first to her staff then to her face, as he immediately snapped back to the present without hesitation or loss of comprehension to her words. Judging by the woman’s prim and proper command of language, Jey could tell that this one had some kind of worthwhile pedigree. This was curious given her choice of tavern, but he wasn’t one to judge. Out of his peripheral, he watched as the bardmaid he had also called over finally arrived and began speaking, cutting short the introductory speech of the other. Jey couldn’t help but chuckle to himself at the blue skinned woman’s response to the maid’s presence. He half expected her to punch out this verbal offender as she had the brute from before. She didn’t, though he was still entertained by the quick-witted tongue lash, if not vaguely disappointed on some subconscious level by the lack of violence. “Two of yuh stronges,” he answered the maid in a mix of common and patwah accent, ordering for the both of them given that it was obvious his tablemate wasn’t going to respond. If the woman wasn’t interested in drink, he’d just end up with two of his own, which was just as good. Once the maiden had taken the order and dispersed, the tiefling returned his attention to the woman in front of him with a silent, toothy grin. After a moment, he closed his eyes and shook his head with a short laugh before looking up at her again with intrigue, amusement playing in his eyes. ”Yuh a bit of a fyahstarta, ah?” Edited by Jey, May 19 2014, 11:42 AM.

Her contact had a way of speaking, not everyone is born a noble but she had heard peasants speak better. Not really an issue, at least this one was not trying to get grabby with her, she did wonder about the two drinks he had ordered. Was she expected to drink one with him, was such a costume acceptable around the commoners? She did not know and she did not care for the time being, he did call her a bit of a fire starter, it could only mean he was talking about the heated argument she had with the fat bastard as she entered. She would not really call it an argument as it had been more of an explanation, one he listened fully. - A fire starter you say? I believe that man got exactly what he deserved, the audacity of the man. The maid herself was lucky not to get seconds, and thinking about it, that was probably for the best. Beating some drunk is one thing, beating the maid and I would probably incur on the wrath of the tavern keeper and the many people of this establishment. But she best not push her luck any further, last maid that disappointed me I sent her to slavers, making sure her pretty face would be sold cheap. A grin formed on her girlish lips, and she followed with a bite of the under lip, the thought made her feel pleased, it seemed that causing others pain was one of her favorite things. That was probably why she had no interest in taking lives, because after one is dead there is no more pain to be felt, or at least there is no pain she could see. - Lets us move one to the reason I am here… - Hi again, here you go! – Said the maid, almost screaming as she came in with two of their strongest beverages in tall mugs. – If you… - NO! – Said Shiver slamming her right fist on the table. – We need nothing else from thou… I am tired of being interrupted by the likes of thee. If thou show thine face anytime soon, I will pull thou by the hair, smashing thine jaw on the table and then skillfully poke thine face with my staff as if it were a ball, hopefully breaking thine nose, if not anything else. If thou understand, then take this coin and speak no word. – Shiver reached with her left hand into the inside of her clothes and threw a few gold coins on the table. More than enough to pay for the two drinks, and quite possibly to pay for some more. The maid simply lowered the drinks on the table, took the coin and left the table before the tears stared to roll down her face. The image of a shade took a while to return to normal after blurring a great deal, if she did not have business to conduct nothing would have made her happier than to break the maid’s face. Alas, she had work to do, son she leaned back massaging her frontal lobe. She let out a sigh and looked the other in the eye. - So to business… Edited by Lena, May 20 2014, 04:08 AM.

It wasn’t simply in the woman’s handling of the male from before which had inspired his earlier comment, but also in the way she had spoken to the maid thereafter. Everyone this woman had come into contact with so far within the establishment had recieved some kind of lashing, be it physical or otherwise. Aside from Jey himself anyway, at least not yet. How long could he remain on her good side? Not that it mattered much to him really, he could take care of himself. It was just a curious thing, a mental game for himself to see what, if anything, he did offhandedly happened to set her off. The toothy grin remained on his face as the outlaw listened to her speak and explain the reasoning behind her actions, along with the consequences for the maid lest she annoy her further. The mention of slavers caught him off guard and he raised a curious eyebrow. “Yuh er bit young to be inna trade…” he spoke skeptically, turning his head slightly to give the other a sideways glance from under the hood. The mention of slavery in and of itself did not bother him at all, for he too had previous dealings with slavers. On several occasions Jey had been contracted by seedy individuals, fueled by revenge, envy, and simple cruelty, to kidnap the children of wealthy nobles for the purpose of selling them into hard labor. On several more he had sought them out of his own accord, in order to take care of captives from successful banditry activities. He didn’t always know what to do with such individuals, for he had no use for them, so selling their persons into slavery was convenient, not to mention lucrative. Generally those types tended to be low income merchants, refugees, gypsy caravans and the like. People he, for whatever reason, didn’t feel comfortable with slaughtering on the spot. Her look of satisfaction at the mere idea of causing suffering to others didn’t go unnoticed by him, yet he made no reaction to it. He made a mental note of it however, something to tuck away in his memory banks as being something to remember about this girl for future reference, if necessary. “Yes,” he hissed between fangs in agreement to the notion of where they should lead the conversation. Why was she here? This young, violent girl with ties to the underground, yet whom possessed the speech and mannerisms of one of the noble class. She had all the markings thus far of some of his other connections, though none of them, with their fancy titles and prestige, would ever deign to meet him in public, let alone a common denominator tavern such as this one. Jey’s violet eyes flicked over to the barmaid as she appeared suddenly, once again cutting off the dark mistress across from him. The outburst her appearance and bubbly personality sparked from the dark one drew the tiefling to laugh, though the sound was drowned out by the other’s speech, and was more in mockery of the antagonizer than it was in ridicule of the antagonized. Truly, he found the outburst unnecessary, even if slightly amusing on some distant level. What bother could this barmaid truly be, when her purpose is solely to serve? Jey watched while slowly shaking his head as the maid turned and breezed away, no doubt to let loose a few tears behind closed doors before returning to work. “Dis wah I mean…” He remarked quietly, referencing his past observation of the girl’s tendencies while reaching for the nearest mug and bringing it to his lips. Again, the appearance of the girl blurred, the sight distracting him from the delicious bite of his drink, and he squinted while staring. The fact this was happening again, and so close to him this time made him think that it was not a trick his eyes were playing on him, but instead something the girl was able to do herself. It was interesting, not to mention disturbing, and before he was able to move on to anything else, he needed an answer for it. “To bizniz, yeah, but first, why yuh a blur up yuh face so?” |

She raised a brow, thinking firstly how bold of a question the other was making. She on her hand was certainly not questioning him about the movements of his ears, even if they intrigued her. What annoyed her the most was the fact that they had send this man to meet her and they did not explain what kind of person she was. She was tempted to decline answering such question, but it might prove bad for business, still her brows frowned as she fixated her glare on the man. They had demanded so much and provided so little, it was unfortunate that she did not make the first contact. That was on Stray’s head, so truly a fitting punishment was needed, using her whip came to mind as her left hand reached to trace said weapon with her index finger. - I must say I dislike the question, but in the interest of business I will humor thee. It is not my face that blurs but my entire body however the clothes I wear cover that fact. I am a shade, and if thou fail to know a shade is, well that is thine fault. To answer the question posed by thee a shade’s body is directly influenced by the mental state of the individual, meaning that the angrier I get the blurrier I become. Should I get extremely aggravated, there is a good chance I may lose my physical form and turn to smoke, or fog, but I rather avoid that because my clothes are unable to turn to smoke as well. She did not like to explain such a thing to the man, to anyone really. Only those that were close knew what she really was and what her body was capable off. She glanced at her mug, considered to take a sip to relieve her of the buildup frustration. No it is a mistake Lena, she thought, should I ingest that liquid my ability to remain focused will diminish immensely. She glanced at the man once more, trying to see a reaction. The man had been cold and cool at the same, she had noticed the smiles and hidden laughs, he would think that the shadows of the hood covered his features but she could see it a clear as day, if not better. - Well are thou satisfied with the answer I have provided? I certainly hope so, because I have no intention of discussing my superior condition any further. I may be young as you have mentioned before, but that is exactly why I tire of this dance. Can we pray move on to business? It won’t be night forever might I add. The voices of the tavern had lowered a great deal, some people got up and crowded together, conspiracy was in the air. She was uncertain that the feelings that were at play were directed to her, she could not understand what they were whispering, but considering she had been less than discreet in her time spent in the tavern, the possibility that there was a plot to attack her as very likely. One needs to expect the worse of the people. She tried to act like nothing was going on, and kept looking at the individual in front of her, and his eyes, she liked those violet eyes, but her right hand casually took hold of her staff. |

‘Dat not tek long atall,’ the tiefling thought to himself while the woman scrunched her forehead and stared him down with a glare. He didn’t understand what there was to be bothered about in regards to the question he had posed. Was it unusual for one to ask another the why’s and how’s of an action or trait the latter exhibited that appeared strange or entirely new to the former? Or, perhaps he had simply been desensitized to the offense of blunt, probing questions about one’s personage. Being no stranger to such inquiries himself, in regards to his eye and skin color, least of all about his ears, their movements, and his overall heritage. Perhaps there was a time when a person asking him about such things may have bothered him slightly, but if so, that time was long since passed. Besides, it was better that a person asked, rather than just assume. So he felt, at least. Jey nodded with a grunt of acknowledgement once she had finished her explanation. He had no idea what a ‘shade’ was, but such knowledge was unnecessary for the time being. His question had been answered well enough to sate his curiosity, in addition to adjusting his previous assessment. While she had stated that she disliked his question, his words hadn’t triggered another bout of blurring on her behalf. ‘False alarm.’ There was more time yet to his little mental game; not that he was going to intentionally aim to spur the other to anger. He was just seeing what, if anything, in his normal way of being would set her off. Wondering if she would react as fiercely to one who wasn’t as easily dealt with like the barmaid and oaf from before was an interesting though. Something else that was interesting, was the mechanics of the blurring she explained to him. The fact that it was something she did not seem to have much control over was something that he resonated and connected with quite easily. His ears did a much similar thing, reacting subconsciously to his emotional state. It was something that he had come to accept about himself, but her words inspired a resurgence of memory, times when he would cover himself in cloaks and hats for reasons other than infamy. There had been times when he would sit and stare into reflecting pools for hours attempting to control them, to not have his anger or sadness so readily available for others to take advantage of. Jey’s gaze momentarily wavered, flicking down into the murky depths of his drink before the mug was raised once again to his lips. A large gulp followed, the bite of the liquid thankfully pulling him back from such unpleasant thoughts of days long gone by. The young woman would be hard pressed to receive a reaction of any kind from the tiefling nowadays if all she would do is glare at him. Disparaging looks meant nothing to the outlaw now as his entire life had been filled with them. Because of his fiendish aura, everywhere he went, whether his dark reputation preceded him or not, there was someone giving him the evil eye, or another muttering curses in direction. Even when he was a child and had no knowledge of himself or understanding as to why those around him would react to his presence that way. His experiences had hardened him to such non-physical cues. Now, it was only when people turned their words and glares into action against that he began to care. As such, Jey was fairly oblivious to the change of mood within the tavern. The lowering of voices, the sideways glances, the plotting whispers, all of it was forgettable white noise to him. Perhaps he would have been paying more attention to what was being whispered around him had he not been focused on the curiosity of the shade that shared his table.”Yeah, whateva yuh waahnt,” he spoke evenly, taking another swig of his drink and disregarding the snobbish attitude that accompanied her request. Noble types were all so full of themselves. “Yuh should ave er sip, hit will relax yuh,” he said then, motioning towards the other mug on the table, his fingers moving to drum clawed nails against his own. “Now, wah bizniz yuh look fah?” |

Business? What business, he said… What business? WHAT BUSSINESS?!! She could not avoid the anger to build up, despite her training to do otherwise. She had been a fool, and now she felt like one. Her form blurred the other knew why, she had reveled that fact in the interest of business, what a fool she had been. She gripped her staff immensely and felt a great pull to slam it on the other, not to mention there was something about the man that made her feel even angrier. In the end her anger quelled, she managed to grip that thin thread of logic that this was more her fault, or Stray’s fault than the man before her and in all he had really done nothing to aggravate her situation as it was a misunderstanding on her part. - I shall not be ingesting that liquid most foul. In fact we shall not partake in any business. It would seem I made a mistake most grave. Pray excuse my presence. She attempted to be as polite as possible, she had to as the alternative would be quite unpleasant, and it would certainly set her on the path of madness once again. She did not want that, the night was being eaten away and the last thing she wanted was to linger around this place any further. She had real business to attend to and it was clear to her she was in the wrong place. She got up and pulled her hood back to cover her head and with the staff in hand she turned away. Quickly Shiver found out that the voices she had listened to were indeed plotting against her as she found a group of three men standing in her away, prohibiting her to leave the premises. - It’s one thing for y’ to beat up som’ ol’ drunk. But the miss was just doin’ her job… I think dis little girl is deservin’ of a spanking. – The man in the red shirt and grizzly beard looked at the others, smiling and they all joined in on the laugh. – What do y’ say little girl? Goin’ to play nice or do we have to break som’ bone? - Let me ponder about my reply for a moment. – She said this as she looked back to the table where she had words with the other. – I will provide thou with reward and safe heaven should thou choose to aid me. If thine answer is positive, pray do something to put out that fire. – She looked back at the other that was quite displeased upon listening to her words. – Well it would seem my answer is… no! She was quick to plant a sucker punch to the gut, making the grizzly man sick of his stomach. If the lighting had not been so bright it would have been quicker, and would probably have made him vomit, but it had been well placed enough to grant her a distraction. The blond man from before saw this and ran out the door, disappearing from sight in a matter of seconds. She flipped backwards to put some distance between the men and herself, but her movements were sluggish so she needed to do something about that. As she landed she switched hands with the staff, leaving her right hand free to take hold of her whip, and with precise strikes any candle within range was put out, hopefully the other had managed to extinguish the fireplace. Finally she screamed as loud as possible, concentrating a great deal of energy that she used to once more dim the remaining light as much as possible, and while her ability to do so was not perfect, with the room under the influence of an inferior lighting than before, this time around anyone could see that the room had gotten darker. Shiver slowly folded her whip, a grin forming and a lick of her upper lip was soon to follow, her vision focused on her marks. Apart from those who took cover, many had decided to join in the brawl that had impregnated the air. - Now… I think the disgusting peasants were saying something about a spanking? Allow me to retort… Edited by Lena, May 26 2014, 07:18 AM.

Jey clicked his tongue at the sight of the woman blurring, presumably in response to his less than appropriate words. He watched her grip her staff as if she were to hit him, but did not react. Such a move would not have ended well, and he was glad that she refrained from going through with it in the end. The tiefling gave an exaggerated tilt of his head as she refused him before excusing herself, the violet eyed male staring at her with his face a mask of indifference. Inwardly, he was slightly disappointed, though there would be none who would know that fact. That girl was an interesting one, and he had to admit that he was curious in regards to what ‘business’ she was dealing in. With that said, and as he watched her stand and raise her hood, he noted that it was truly none of his business, and was still unrelated to the objective that had originally drawn him to the tavern in the first place. Shrugging, he lowered his eyes while raising his mug to his lips again, resigned to lose himself in a few more swings before realigning his focus to swindling what marks remained in the establishment. The brief confrontation near his table was easily overheard, but he was prepared to ignore it completely. That is, until the mention of a reward caused him to flick a sly gaze up at woman. A small grin crept onto his face after he took a big swallow, a flicker of excitement appearing in his eyes at the prospect of a tavern brawl. The punch sent by the woman to the beefy man’s stomach made him chuckle. Could not this boisterous bully handle a pretentious sounding young girl? If he wasn’t up to the task of blocking a single punch, perhaps he should have just kept his mouth shut. ”Alrite,” Jey spoke smoothly, accepting the request for assistance, then putting his mug down before quickly reaching for the other untouched one. A well timed flick of his red wrist sent the liquid contents spilling into the hearth, extinguishing the flames in a loud hiss that steamed the immediate vicinity. Taking another swig of his drink, Jey watched as the girl backflipped and begun whipping out the candle flames. He hummed in interested recognition of his skills before laughing quietly at the scene; a sign that perhaps the alcohol was beginning to take its affect. His hands instinctively went to his ears once the woman screamed, a pained expression crossing his face and making him grimace. “Ey ey ey! Enough of di screaming, gyal! I cyan’t help yuh ef I’m deaf!” Not that he was doing much to help her at this exact moment. In fact, he wasn’t doing much of anything at this exact moment. Like an tiny island amongst a storm, Jey was fairly still at his table, disconnected from the fight that was going on all around him. |

As the fire hissed Shiver smiled, Perfect, it was all working in her favor, she hopped the other had more in him than just a cool look and smooth talk. Apart from the three that confronted her, another three were also looking to punch away, and a reserved group of four were still undecided whether they should fight or flee. She could not take ten people out in such a closed up place, even if she did had the stamina to do it, witch she did not, ten people all focused on her would have been a fools errant. If Jey had not agreed to help her, she would have taken out the trio and ran for the door, of course she rather take them all out, running was such a cowardly act, but still to stay and get beat down would have been stupid. She gripped the short staff firmly, her glowing eyes closing, the last drop of water had sent ripples all over the lake, but now there were no more drops, the lake was clear as a mirror, Shiver was calm, focused. Has she opened her eyes she was no longer looking at the dirty peasants, she was looking at the striking points. She took a step forward, and made the tip of her staff fly in the direction of the disorientated man's forehead, it connected and as he leaned back Shiver made a spinning motion with the staff and hit him on the left side of the head, the man fell. Forehead frontal, ear side... down. She could hear the sounds of the other brawling, but she did not smirk or react in her usual way, she merely heard them because she had to, she was focused on her surroundings as well. The other two men were running to her, so she rolled to the side, so that the taller man of the group would have to avoid the fallen companion before reaching her, and thus isolating her current target, still crouched on the ground she made the staff hit the left knee of the man, as he stumbled on all fours and as she got up she was quick to whack him in the head, twice for good measure. Knee, he falls, two blows to the back of the head... down. The last guy was already on top of her, his arms trying to grab her. Duck, kidney shot. The man was tall, but Shiver was fast enough to avoid his grip, should she had been caught, it would all be over for her, unless she would turn to smoke, but she did not have that kind control over her body. Following the motion she landed a left hook to the man's kidney area, he squirmed, but still had the energy to fight back. Made him angry, right hook incoming. It did not happen has she had predicted, unfortunately for Shiver the man was a southpaw, so she took a strong left hook to the face, making her world become incredibly blurry, in more ways than one. She only had time to see that the gloved hand was bloody, after reaching for her mouth, not only was she almost seeing double from the impact, she became angry, and her visual appearance displayed that fact. She saw the other going for the grabs once again, but this time around she discarded her calm ways and jumped the man, her legs warping around the man's neck as she began to deliver blows to his face. He was strong, and only as the sixth blow landed did he falter. Another face turned to mush. She shook her head, it was still ringing from the blow, Shiver glanced to Jey as she reached out to grab her staff. |

To be honest, after quickly thinking the situation over again, Jey had technically considered his part of the fight to be done already. The girl had asked for help, and he had obliged by dousing the hearth; thus their verbal contract had been completed. A smirk appeared on his face as he considered this technicality, wondering how the girl would fare if he decided to simply sit and observe. ‘But das no fun,’ Jey took another long sip of his drink in the darkness, closing his eyes as the vague tickling of alcohol began to haze his mind. Despite this, he was still perfectly able to maintain general awareness of the fight and layout of the tavern overall. His ears twitched and fanned out, the various noise of the tavern brawl painting a fairly good picture of his surroundings in his mind’s eye. Judging by the sounds and their origins, the outlaw could tell that his tablemate was actually taking good care of herself, so far anyway. Every time he heard one of the men make way towards her, the sound was soon followed by the crash of them hitting the ground. He laughed at this, amused by the older men’s ineptitude at beating up a young girl, while also being pleasantly surprised by her fighting prowess in the dark. ‘ow exciting…’ He thought while leaning back in his seat, moving his foot to rest against the table, positioning himself so that he could slowly rock back, balancing on the two rear chair legs. As the fighting with the first three continued, Jey caught wind of the second group of three heading towards the girl from near his position. He could only assume they were making their way towards her to try and support the men who had fought before them. Now was probably as good a time as any to lend an additional helping hand. With that thought in mind, the tiefling gave the edge of the table a hard kick with the heel of his boot, sending the object sliding forward across the floor. The sliding table slammed into the first guy’s side, catching him and his mates by surprise, and toppling all three like bowling pins. Jey jumped up from his chair then and took three large gulps to finish off his drink, giving a satisfied smack of his lips before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. With the now empty wooden container dangling from his hand, Jey sauntered forward as the floored men scrambled to get to their feet. The first quickly turned in his direction with a nasty look, just in time to have the suddenly thrown mug smack him right between the eyes and send him floor bound once more. Jey then rushed the second, who reacted in time to throw a quick jab, but wasn’t fast enough to land it. Ducking the swing, Jey reached up to grab the man by the front of his shirt with both hands. Launching himself upwards as he yanked the man down, he smashed his head hard into the man’s chin. The cracking of teeth and shattering of jaw bone was music to his ears, and he laughed while using his inhuman strength to hurl the wounded male across the bar. Seeing how quickly his companion had been dealt with, the third turned to make for an exit, clumsily stumbling over something unidentified in the dark. Not wanting to let him escape so easily, Jey pursued, taking advantage of the stumble to catch up to his target. Palming the man’s face from behind, the outlaw gave a swift kick to the back of his ankles, throwing the man’s legs out beneath him, and making it easier to slam him head first onto the floor. Stunned, the man could barely do more aside from stare blankly upwards before Jey’s boot stomped down hard against his throat. With his foot still applying pressure to the suffocating man’s throat, he called out to the girl, “Yuh dun now? Is dis good enough?” |

She got up straight, she was not expecting to spend so much energy with those three, but she was angry at being hit and a little shaken still, her eyes now watched carefully as Jey fought and she was glad to see him make use of his fists and objects laying nearby to put down those who stood against her, you could tell a lot by a person who fights mostly unarmed. By the time he was done the last group had changed their minds about attacking them and promptly stood down in the dark area that was now the tavern. He looked at her, still punishing the last daring peasant. How fitting. – Yes, I believe this is… - Her speech was interrupted as she heard that one of the guys she beat down... got up, was up actually, with a long dagger in his hands and murder in his eyes, her mind froze for a moment, I need… I need to... parry?! Her body did not move in time to do anything, and if not from the black blade poking out from the man’s chest she would have been wounded or worse. The man did not know exactly what was happening, but with a twist of the blade all doubt abandoned his mind, along with his life. Like a doll he fell on the floor and standing in front of her now was her trusted companion. – Stray?! – You could hear the relief in her voice, she was glad on the timely arrival of the catfolk. Stray helped Shiver up and whispered. – We got to go… Hum, some fool ran out of here… and w-warned the guards. They will be here at, hum… any moment! – This revelation shocked Shiver but her mind was now thinking about the reason they had come to Soto, to Madrid, so far away from home. – What about the… - Stray interrupted her. – I have it… hum, the shard is with me. – Stray reassured his mistress that their trip had not been in vain, but the catfolks eyes trailed in another direction and out of instinct he stood between Shiver and the approaching man, blade raised and ready to strike. Shiver however placed her hand on Stray’s shoulder. – No… he is with us. Stray’s gaze lingered on the tiefling for a while longer, then he slowly sheathed his dagger and nodded to Shiver, making his way outside with graceful speed. Shiver stood there for a moment, and gazed at the man that now rested dead on the floor. – He brought this punishment on himself, had he not reached for a blade… - She shrugged like it was nothing. She was unaware on how keen the hearing abilities of the man that helped her were, there was a possibility their whispers had been heard. – Guards are coming, we need to depart swiftly. Should thou still desire what I promised then do not trail behind… - With that she too made it out if the tavern quickly, and as she got out she followed Stray and with ease climbed up to the roofs of Madrid where they would avoid the city guards if they were careful enough. Considering the tiefling might not be as agile as both of them were she reached out into her bag to take the rope out. – Pray aid me Stray… - She gave one end of the rope to Stray and pointed to the chimney. Stray tied the rope around the chimney as it was asked of him and Shiver let the rope out into the streets. Both of them lingered around for the time being, but never did Shiver doubt the other would not come after them. After all why would he help her in the brawl? Sure there were those that enjoyed the fight, but even so, would people really turn their back on profit? Unlikely, and it did not take long for the other to climb up to the roofs to meet with them. Stray packed up the rope while Shiver greeted the one that helped her. – Glad thou could join us. But let us not linger any further I am sure we can finish our conversation somewhere outside the city walls. – With that she took the rope Stray had folded up and kept it back in her bag and made sure she did as she told Jey and started moving, Stray trailed behind and probably the other did the same. |

The strangled gargling of the captive man beneath his boot reached Jey’s ears, the sound invoking from him a sharp toothed grin and vicious glint to flash in his violet eyes. Almost unintentionally, he began adding pressure to his boot, a subconscious desire for more of the grotesque sound as well as the feeble struggling motion beneath him. If left to his own devices, there was little doubt that in the next second he would have crushed the man’s throat completely. However, fate had decided to forego that outcome for the man, as without warning the pressure vanished, Jey having taken a step forward towards the Shade. His attention had been drawn by the failed sneak attack by one of the men the girl had just beaten up. The sudden protrusion of a blade from the human’s chest and the timely appearance of what was obviously the girl’s ally surprised him, but in a way that just made him all the more curious about those he was getting himself wrapped up with. The outlaw could easily overhear the duo’s conversation, sucking his teeth and clenching a fist at learning about the imminent appearance of city guards. Jey paid no mind to the cat person as they positioned themselves between him and his former tablemate. He posed no threat to her currently, and he doubted the other would attack him without reason given the circumstances. Callously, Jey snorted at the girl’s words as she referenced the dead man at her feet. “Who kyares?” he asked, his tone slightly incredulous. ” Men die everyday. Wah’s one more?” Surely this girl, if she dabbled as deeply in the underworld as Jey suspected, knew this. Could a tavern brawl even really be considered a true brawl if someone didn’t brandish a weapon, and another not take a shiv to the gut? He nodded in response to her statement to him, not bothering to mention that he had heard the previous conversation and thus already understood the situation surrounding their leaving. While both had exited the tavern rather swiftly, Jey took a rather leisurely approach, sighing and stretching his arms above his head as he made his way to the door. Before passing through the frame however, he paused to make a quick dash behind the bar and snatched an unopened bottle, just because he could. Once outside, he caught sight of the other two, already amongst the rooftops of the higher level. While it would not have been impossible for him to climb a wall unaided, the idea of having to endure the sensation of claw against stone to actually do it bothered him and he scowled. Luckily though, the end of a rope came falling down to greet him, tossing the thought of having to deal with that out the window. Popping the top of the bottle open, Jey put the opening in his mouth before gripping the rope with both hands and testing if it was secure. Finding it so, he began to scale up the side of the building, his head tilted back, and adam’s apple bobbing every few motions as he managed to chug and climb simultaneously. When he reached the top, the tiefling took a final swig from the bottle and whistled, the burn that was now lingering in his throat and blazed in his belly invigorating him,“sweet!” Jey watched as the cat man began packing up the rope and couldn’t help but smirk at the sound of the girl’s voice, her formal way of speaking amusing him slightly. ”Yuh sure kyame prepared. Yuh often get tagalongs?” He asked as they began to move, the tiefling keeping up easily enough, staying on par with the girl, the liquid held in the bottle sloshing chaotically. |

- Of course I came prepared, rope has many uses… I always have it with me. – She said it like she was speaking from a tall mountain, always so sure of things, always so mighty and powerful. However Stray seemed to frown at her behavior, it was fitting of Lena but not Shiver, and maybe he would have to say something to her in the future. – Stray, scout ahead. – The catfolk was quick to speed up and soon he was a rooftop ahead of both of them as they ran. She needed the privacy to speak with the tiefling. She jumped another roof, landing light on her feet as her cloak continued to dance at winds will. - I do not require knowing thine name, neither thou require knowing mine. I thank thee for the help back there, I mistaken thee for someone else. – She shook her head, biting her lip from that unpleasant frustration. – I did enjoy seeing thou in combat and I can also say I would like to see more. – Up ahead, Stray gestured and jumped over the city walls, Shiver was soon to catch up and she too jumped over, followed by the tiefling. She headed over to the catfolk and retrieved a pouch of gold from his belt, it was tightly closed so it would not make a noise when running and jumping, but it had a decent size. – Here, the reward I promised thee. – She extended the pouch but pulled back at the last moment. – There is something I want to ask before I give this to thee. Her purple eyes glowed from the shadows of the cloak and gazed upon Jey, a penetrating force with a stern expression, she was hardly blurring. – I can give thou this, but I was serious about seeing more of thine combat prowess. I have been training since five years of age, so I can tell when someone is above the average. – She walked up close to the teifling, her more playful nature taking over as she traced her gloved index finger along Jey’s arm. – I could have use for thine talent, looking for work? I know today was a disaster, but what brought me here today was not what thou could say, our usual line of work. – She circled Jey around slowly, the trio was all carefully hidden amongst trees and bushes so no one was coming around any time soon, she had time. She stooped before the man and reached out for his hand and placed the pouch on it. – Thou have earned that much, and some respect from me. Thou might not know who I am, but if it means anything to thee, known that thou have made an important acquaintance today. She pulled back to Stray, she gazed at a distance, Shiver had liked the attitude in Jey, in what it regarded his abilities. He was a commoner, and probably a criminal too. Still, he would be a good addition to the ranks of her guild, but one could not simply come out and say it. – If thou are ever in Angkar, ask around for this, “When it rains it ripples, when the rain comes to a halt the water grows still. Where does a lake lay?” That is of course if thou are looking for work, good work. – It is true Shiver still looked like a young adult but with the arrival of the God’s strange things had happened to this world and Shiver had been graced with powers from the shadows as well. She had childish behavior at times, but she also showed great maturity and intelligence when she was calm. – As for safe heaven. – She snapped the fingers and it was all that was needed for Stray to take a small piece of parchment, walking up to Jey to hand it over. – Thou can use that location for three days at most, what happens next is not of my concern. Thus, my business with thee is concluded. For now… - She lingered for a moment, just waiting to see the tiefling’s response to it all. |
