Hey everyone! It's that time of year again! Some of you may be wondering why the Elly Awards are only cropping up once this year, as they're typically run semi-annually. The staff team has decided that it would be best to only run them once a year, in order to avoid some of the pitfalls that the awards experienced when they were being run semi-annually (people disappearing after the winter rounds, for example). They will be held annually from this point forward, during the summer months. Once again, we're doing something of a hybrid nominating process for the awards, whereby some categories will be open for member nominations. They are:
If you choose to, you may nominate an unlimited number of characters for each category, but you may not nominate your own. Any nomination that includes your own character, whether you have nominated others for the same category, will be entirely ignored. We understand that people will have situations in which their character may say or do something that they think worthy of a nomination, but there's also a good chance that someone else will nominate the same thread or character because others will agree with the sentiment. You may, however, nominate a thread you participated in or a character that you had a thread with, provided the focus is not on your own character (ex. if I were to nominate the thread A Dish Best Served Cold, I would be allowed to nominate it not because Orion is in it, but because of a super emotionally charged moment that Razarod had, or because Ed's writing caught my attention*). This would be acceptable because the focus is not on you or your character, but on someone else's within a thread that you were in. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me or another staffer. With that aside, please fill out the form below for each individual nomination you wish to put forward and reply to this topic. Nominations will be open until Wednesday, August 15.
Note: There has not been an emotionally charged moment yet, although I was like "\o/ He figured it out!" when Raz realized what Orion had done. |

Award: Friendliest Player Nominee: Ephie Reason: I've never failed to smile or feel better after chatting with her, even if she's not aware of it! From her making art, to pms and even the occasional chats to each other in rps, she always makes me smile ![]() Award: Friendliest Player Nominee: Shadow Reason: Just like Ephie, Shadow never fails to brighten my day. I'm pretty sure every pm we've sent has about a million hearts and smileys scattered throughout. She's so encouraging and nice- yeah! I might do some more later when I've thought more about it, but this one really stuck out at me

Here's part of my nominations, I gotta figure out what else I wanna put up before I do the rest. (: Award: Best Use of Language Nominee: Sophia, in From Darkness
Reason: A very ominous moment that was well-written and also connected so strongly to Sophia's life. I love the way that her past is hinted at but never fully divulged. Award: Friendliest Player Nominee: Heath Reason: He's always so supportive and funny as well, just an all around awesome guy and great to talk to and roleplay with. (: Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Aethelmare's revelation about his past in Breaths Held Reason: I think this was an extremely well-done reveal for this kind of subject and the writing was tasteful- not too many details so that we could still feel the emotional blow of the incident. Award: Best Use Of An NPC Nominee: Dirge [Player] for the relationship she built between Dirge and Desideratus Reason: Parent/child relationships are not often dealt with in roleplaying, even in fantasy in general, so just going in that direction is an accomplishment. Ontop of that, the relationship between Dirge and her father is so complex, with some sinister implications. The whole thing was very well-written and I've enjoyed it all. (: A good example of how it's developed is in Come Dance With The Devil where Desideratus is also used to give other people's characters someone to interact with. Award: Most Interesting Thread Nominee: Shadow and Chit in Violated with Nausicaa and Matchitehew Reason: I've always been interested to see where this was going and I must admit I'm hooked on this thread, even though it's pretty new. Can't wait to see where it goes next!! |

After much deliberation, this is what I have to offer for now. Award: Friendliest Player. Nominee: Ephie (Player) Reason: Ok this isn’t a popularity thing with me, even though I’ve pretty much nominated the one of the people I am closest too. But these people have been my serious Elenlond Rock since I have got here so this is the main reason I am nominating them. Ephie- when I first joined, she practically swept me under her wing, she wasn’t a Mod back then. So it wasn’t part of her “duty”. Not only has she shared awesome music with me and pretty much REDEFINED my entire writing play list, but she also has been serious moral support during more difficult times in my life. On top of that, Ephie is selfless, despite sometimes not feeling to awesome herself, she is always willing to listen to a moan or two and takes it without making you feel like a burden. Lastly she has refined my plotting skills, I remember in my earlier weeks she asked me how long I had been role-playing, I jokingly asked her if she thought me a “noob” and she turned around and went kinda! But she explained why she thought this and the flaws in my plotting ‘’skills’ per say. From then on I wanted to try harder and fill in the gaps that I currently had and that’s the type of person Ephie is, she makes you want to try harder and I think that’s a wonderful quality in a friend. This is why I am nominating her. Award: Most Romantic Moment Nominee: Shrista (character) Aniketos (character) Reason: I’ve been following this romance avidly and I have been shipping it soooo hard. There are a few threads that I should dig up as examples. But the first that I personally noticed was in the Dance with the Devil thread. The reason this relationship just makes your melt in the middle, is because it gives an extra depth to both Shrista and Aniketos. Where both are hardened badasses in their own respect this show and display a softer gentler part of their personalities. It is so well done, so well executed that I eagerly eat up any post together, because of how it just makes me melt. The players themselves have made this an addictive romance to follow! Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Sophia (character) Reason: I am nominating Sophia for this just because of her That Woman in the Mirror is Not Me thread. When I read it I did drop tears. Seeing the great Sophia that has Soto shaking in its boots, crippled, degraded doubting herself and even her position. Is heartbreaking. Sophia is supposed to be this unlikeable character. Strong, stoic and manipulating. But because of this venerability. She isn’t just a badass she is also a person and in a way it redeems her. Softens her and makes her more human/female. AD deserves serious credit, I find it difficult to RP the opposite sex, but I think he has executed Sophia beautifully that I’ve become quite a fangirl of Sophia. After reading this post I knew I had to be involved, see how it unfurled and explore the vulnerability. I hope to see much much more Edited by Dirge, Aug 11 2012, 12:31 PM.

Award: Best Use of Language Nominee: Reid in The Cleansing Fire Reason:
I know I already did a nomination for this section but this bit here was so good I just had to. I love the way it's described, the imagery is so gorgeous, especially the urban fireflies, and when I read it, it made me think of a scene I had originally come up with in a totally new way. I love the idea of the lanterns as fireflies and the descriptions of the people really catch the flavour of the city...Dayum. :3 I've always immensely respected Reid's skills in writing and they're always getting better, I love reading Reid's work! |

Award: Friendliest Player Nominee: Dirge Reason: She's always super upbeat and has interesting stories to tell, and she greets everyone, especially in the Cbox. Award: Most Interesting Thread Nominee: I Will Never Spy Again Reason: I know this thread hasn't progressed far, but I am pretty glued to this one, and get pretty excited when new posts come in. I think it also demonstrates the lengths to which Aniketos will got to punish others for their treachery, as well as Shrista's relationship with Aniketos. I will have to sit on these a bit. I had quite a few in my head but now they've escaped me. D: Also, please note that this closes in TWO days. |

Award: Best use of an NPC Nominee: AD, via the Dungeon Master Account. Reason: For showing us the viewpoint and the mindset of the doomed guardsmen before their deaths at the hands of Razarod in Storm on the Horizon. Not only does it illustrate the consequences of Razarod's brutality, but it makes the NPC guards more human than just faceless sacrificial mooks. Which leads into... Award: Most Interesting Thread Nominee: Phantom on the Horizon Reason: Well, yes, the fighting in this thread is absurd and awesome, as should be expected of two characters of this caliber. But, point one: the fighting avoids devolving into a muscle show of abilities, or an endless back and forth. Point two: We get to see a point of character development here for both characters. Point three: Sophia's last post is excellent. Descriptive, realistic, and excellent. |

(Yeah, that's all I can get off the top of my head, sorry. I've been too low on muse to properly reply to my own threads, much less read other peoples'. But I'll be looking around probably sometime tomorrow. I wanna use my motivation for posts while I still have it) Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Your Eyes See Right Through Reason: Nevneni is amazing here, for most of the thread. She speaks up to an intimidating, dangerous figure more than once, especially despite feeling overwhelmed. She asserts herself, opens herself up. She tells someone about her past for the first time. And the whole thing is rushed too, which adds more to it all. |

Award: Most Romantic Moment Nominee: Hemlock and Dirge in Come Dance With The Devil Reason:
I think it's wonderful to see someone as invulnerable as Hemlock falling in love. Then on Dirge's side, it's an eventful night for her all around, and there's some lovely little scenes such as her leaning on Hemlock's chest when Desideratus starts playing the piano and so on. Just some small, tender things really. <3 Award: Most Romantic Moment Nominee: Vorkael talking about Nevneni in Waiting in Reversion Reason:
I'm totally biased but it's gorgeous, I love his reason for loving her, it's a total subversion of the typical reasons why a vampire loves a non-vampire (ie. I WANT TO EAT HER) and it shows how tender Vorkael can be. <3 I suppose it could be unique in romantic moments in that only one of the members of the romance is present as well, some great build up. Award: Best Dialogue Nominee: Shrista (and thus Khaan as well) and Tekun in Aftermath Reason: A very conversation-heavy thread touching on some very interesting facets of the character's personalities. Also, some occasional humour, mostly from Khaan. This is one of the most amusing parts. Award: Best Use of an NPC Nominee: Dana for using Khaan in Shrista's character development Reason: I like how Khaan is used to highlight some of Shrista's thoughts that she'd rather not admit to. Normally it would be advisable to have the character internalise these thoughts but it gets tiresome and Khaan was a good way to mix it up a bit. For example, in Parasite in You he points out: "I'd say you have a taste for humans, what with the councillor and now this one." This of course pisses Shrista off because it's totally true. : P Tells us a lot abotu her character, more than having her just think about it would. Another part of this is how Khaan is used to make scenes more intense and dramatic, like in Heart of Wax when he makes the thread much more emotionally intense by attacking Shrista and eventually leaving her contemplating mortality, a thought she brings up to Aniketos...and so on. Award: Best Quotation Nominee: Foojoe's response to a question about Angkar in A Chance Opportunity Reason:
It's an old, dead thread...but no, I will never get over it. : D I will probably come up with EVEN MORE in time. What can I say, I love nominating people and giving them the recognition they deserve! |

Award: Best Use of Language Nominee: Hemlock (Character) Reason: Ok so the first time I rped with Ed using his character Hemlock, I did think ‘what the hell is going on… this is so weird’. But then after a few posts after and watching this continue. I was really impressed. I’ve never tried to give a character a certain way of talking, or an accent. Serious props to Ed for taking the plunge and actually doing something quite unique and difficult I imagine. I’m expecting him to pop out with a few Shakespearean words or two here and there than will make me run off and have to google them. But in all seriousness Ed every post must be extreme effort to have to sit there and use such an unused way of speaking. |

Award: Most Interesting Thread Nominee: Come Dance with the Devil Reason: I remember this being the first thread I jumped into when I returned and I'm quite glad that I decided to take part. I thought it a really unique opportunity to see the many connections between so many different characters; their motives for being there, opinions of one another, struggles, thoughts, etc. It struck me as interesting to have so many characters collected into one place, yet they all appeared to be lost in their own worlds, so to speak. So much great writing from so many people! Pretty awesome, if you ask me. |

I'll do more of these when I get the time to. Award: Friendliest player. Nominee: Shadow, Ephie, Don, Dirge, Heath Reason: this is really hard to pick from so many people but each of these folks have been kind beyond my capabilities of words to express. They are there and reach out when they do not have to, and make the time and space for you. They are always understanding, and always have something sweet to say, or help when they aren't obliged. Often I've seen them bear their own weight of problems and done what I can to help ease, but these people are always there offering an ear when it's needed, and for that I think they deserve recognition. |

Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Tekun (Character) Reason: In the thread Aftermath, where he finally sheds his cold indifferent nature that we have become accustomed to and shows how hurt he is by the flat refusal given to him, and reacts in a very human way. It showed me that even though he is thought to be nothing more than a murderous criminal, he still has feelings underneath, and the bitterness and vindictiveness of his rebuttal made me feel incredibly satisfied with the result, and at the same time, feel terrible for both of them. Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Aniketos (Character) Reason: My gosh there are so many I could pick. I wanted to say the one in the raid, or maybe when he came out of his fever, but there was one that stood out above those. In A Heart of Wax Shrista throws a question at him, asking if he would take care of the rites if she died, because there is no family to do so. His reaction to the question was utterly miserable, and beautifully written, particularly the part 'He saw the emptiness of the spots where she would sit.' That part evoked something in me and this piece...just that. This piece. Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Nausicaa (Character) Reason: In the thread Violated the fear and tension as she realizes that Chit is not in a dream but really there in the physical is practically palpable. The reader can empathize so strongly with the character and understand why she is afraid, and her reluctance to meet him, and watch as the infatuation curdles to borderline terror. Award: Best Quotation Nominee: Dirge (Desideratus) Reason: From That Woman in the Mirror is Not Me, by Desideratus to Sophia, "Do not flatter yourself, I am anything but noble, But watching a cripple hobble about...As entertaining as it would be would just be painfully slow to watch; Perhaps you could give us a show inside?" Award: Best use of an NPC Nominee: Dirge (Player) Reason: Desideratus, of course. For an NPC he is extremely well fleshed out, suave, smooth and undeniably sinister. He oozes arrogance and assurance, and wears danger like a familiar coat. Award: Best Use Of Language Nominee: AD (Gozrik) Reason: I wasn't sure whether to put this as emotional moment or language, seeing as all of it is brilliant. Gozrik is just amazing. I don't think I really need to say too much more than that, anyone who has read one of the threads he is present in will see. He is a simple man, with simple wants. Oh, and uproariously hilarious! Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Sophia (Character) Reason: Here. Use me. This thread shows just how human Sophia is beneath her cold prideful front that she puts on, and how weak and vulnerable she is feeling, to the point that she wants something that would usually revile her, just to feel wanted again. <\3 Award: Best Quotation Nominee: Adelind Reason: The Cleansing Fire, "Everyone would probably be polite until it was time to kill one another." I laughed. XD Award: Best Quotation Nominee: Dalim Reason: Stand Til We Fall, '" I threw you because, let's face it shorty, you're a nice throw-able size. Just like this." Dalim chose that moment to reveal his shoe, and launch the object at the dwarf's face. That explanation wouldn't meet with approval, he was certain.' Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: Yangin, Aniketos (Characters) Reason: In Stand Til We Fall, the closing of the raid on the refugee camp is a momentous piece on both sides, both for the victory of the raiders and Aniketos' vision of glory, and his joy at winning the fight, and the fury and shame of Yangin, who was forced to flee though he was one of the last, taking a heavy price for their making a stand against Aniketos. I really felt able to empathize with both characters, the determination and stoic patriotism of Ani, and the desperation of Yangin who is just trying to hold onto the little his now abandoned people have, only to be forced from it, outclassed by someone who he underestimated. Award: Best Use of Dialogue Nominee: Dalim, Gozrik (Characters) Reason: Stand Til We Fall - There are so many amazing quotes I could pull out of this but the whole affair, while a fight is meant to be serious, was turned around and made quite humorous. Especially when Dalim responded by quite literally doing what Gozrik had suggested, and being so honest and open faced about the whole affair to boot...hehe, boot, get it? Sorry, terrible pun. Award: Most Romantic Moment Nominee: Nausicaa, Machitechew (Characters) Reason: A Second Chance, Chit is obviously head over heels for Nausicaa, and can't help stumbling over his words and actions, but he's so sincere and direct about it, it's quite charming, and endearing. Nausicaa is reluctant but not entirely unwilling, and playful about the whole thing with her naturally elusive manner that makes Chit keep chasing her, and she doesn't try to stop him as she likely would were his attentions unwanted. It shows another side to Chit in particular to his snide, sneering sarcasm and attitude, a softer and more caring one. Edited by Shrista, Aug 17 2012, 02:42 AM.

Award: Best Dialogue Nominee: Lilly (Isra) and Dextra (Nero) in Healing Takes Too Long Reason: Their talk gives a lot of background on recent events in Morrim while also showing what's going on now and what they intend to do about it. Also, their interactions are very delicate, setting up the strange relationship between the Emperor and Empress (which is not what the rumours in Morrim say it is!) and the body language described is great. After all, dialogue is not just the words coming from people's mouths but the actions surround them, and in writing, the way these actions are described are very important. And then...Nero finds out that Isra is a banshee, and takes it much better than expected.

Trying to throw up some others that haven't been mentioned yet that I like! Award: Best Quotation Nominee: Conrad (Character)
Reason: From Stand Till We Fall, this one moved me when I read it. I felt a lot of different emotions (and Shadow certainly would have like... totally understood him in that moment, had she been there), and I just liked the ring it had to it. It definitely resonated with me. Award: Best Dialogue Nominee: Dirge (character) and an NPC
Reason: A small exchange between Dirge and one of her servants in For Soto, this totally made me laugh out loud. Award: Most Interesting Thread Nominee: Wild Breezes Blow Reason: This is an odd one, but I really liked how Dalim (player) showed just how "uncivilized" his character is to the rest of society (I mean come on, teaching someone how to be polite to ladies! =P). It was really interesting to see a character who wasn't versed in proper etiquette and who doesn't quite get social norms because he's never been faced with them before. I haven't seen a scenario like that in a while. I couldn't really think of a better category to put this in, so I stuck it here. Award: Best Use of an NPC Nominee: Ed with Khanrad Reason: In A Dish Best Served Cold, Ed uses Khanrad as another body to duke it out with Orion, and since Khanrad's fire-based skills are non-magical, he's able to bypass the wards on the Moghul's room. I thought this was actually quite clever (I actually didn't see that coming, so it was fun to have to respond to something unexpected), and is a bit different from what I tend to see with NPCs. Award: Friendliest Player Nominee: Heath Reason: I know he's been nominated already, but Heath is always so upbeat and positive that I think he really brings a lot of good vibes to Elly. He never hesitates to talk to other players, and he always seems to be up for a new thread. Award: Most Emotional Moment Nominee: The opening post to That Woman in the Mirror is Not Me Reason: I found the opening post to the aforementioned thread to be really quite moving. Especially that last line. You really see Sophia's vulnerability, what being bested can actually do to you. I felt a lot of sympathy for Sophia, and I think it showcases the breadth of her character, too. Award: Best Use of Language Nominee: Dnan in The Aftermath
Reason: I really liked how this paragraph (or most of it, anyway; I shaved off a bit) really shows Shrista's conflicting emotions. And I like how it seems hopeful that she might give into feelings that she's pretty much tried to dodge for a good chunk of her life, but then ultimately seems to decide that it's not worth it. At least, it looks that way. But that post also ends on a tiny hopeful note, so you never know! Edited by MidnightShadow, Aug 20 2012, 08:30 PM.

Reason: There are so many witty comebacks and one-liners in this that just shows exactly what each of the characters feels about the other.
