(!!WARNING: Potentially triggering!! Discusses rape and physical assault sorta indirectly.) It's safe to sleep in the day. Vorkael's downstairs, you're upstairs, nothing can happen. And yet her eyes remained open, her ears searching for the opening of the door, steps on the floorboards. No, no, it didn't feel safe now, it hadn't for days. She couldn't clearly remember the last time she'd slept- had it been before all this or had she managed to drift off some time? Her body hurt, her mind was a swill of disconnected thoughts, and yet no matter how much valerian tincture she took, she could not sleep. Not today either. She kicked her blankets off and swung her legs off the bed, staring around the room. This inn wasn't helping- it seemed like it would fall apart at any moment, and the boards that separated her from the next room weren't put together well. She worried that someone could see through, but was too afraid to peer into the other room to see if there was, in fact anyone there. Sometimes she thought she heard breathing, or the rustling of sheets, but she thought she heard a lot of things when she was sleep-deprived. She stared at the wall for a few minutes, struggling through a mental fog until she finally found what she was supposed to do next. Put on your shoes. She reached for the leather boots, and in bending over to do so, she felt like the world tumbled and shook inside her head. She grimaced, paused, and then pulled them on. Fingers shaking, she just barely managed to tie the laces- they would probably just come untied but she felt like she couldn't change that, somehow. She heaved her aching body up to standing, picked up her bag, her staff, and went out the door, downstairs. Might as well try to sell herbs while you can. Out into the sun- felt so strange in her situation. Her mind lingered on that night, and on what this night would be...her arm ached most of all, but she ignored it. The bruise was hidden under a sleeve, hidden from sight but not from her mind. Mentally, she lived in the night, her hours married to shadow. The streets were full of rickety houses and places of ill repute, but other than that were surprisingly devoid of life. This place seemed more nocturnal to- people could get up to more in the night, or at least that was the impression she got. Night...Night... She sighed, closed her eyes for a moment and felt the rocking of her steps send her plunging into a momentary abyss. She felt as if she slept for a moment, but then she stumbled in her step and came back to earth. She sucked in a deep breath and blinked herself into wakefulness, suppressing a yawn. Down the street she went, feeling all the way as if the world was warping around her. She bit her lip to keep her on the earth, thinking Stupid. When you try to sleep, you cannot. When you try to stay awake- Her thoughts were interrupted by a wavering cry. She looked around stupidly, trying to locate the source of the call. It came again, louder this time, and she realized it was coming from an alley. Cautiously, she walked to the entrance of the alley, peered into the shadows where the sun didn't show her face. What she saw made her retch with a sudden wave of fear. Lying on the dirty cobbles was a woman, her face dark with bruises, her mouth open and crying out, eyes searching for help. She was like a broken bird, her bright red dress torn and dirtied, the skirts flung up to reveal scraped knees and bruised legs, a swollen ankle. It was clear what had happened here- she stumbled over and sank to her knees beside the woman, holding out a shaking hand. "I'm here, I'll take care of you." The woman saw her, looked at her face, and reached out, taking Nevneni's hand. For a moment, Nevneni was unseeing, her eyes glazing over and her mind succumbing to darkness. Memories, old and bitter, crawling in like thorny vines, drawing blood. The same old things- moonlight, crickets, sweat, alcohol, humidity, waves, breathing, shadow and she was those words that pounded in her head- Nothing, nothing at all. She swallowed back nausea, her eyes focused on the broken woman's face. This is no time for yourself, Neni. It felt as if the world was piling itself on her back, night by night, but there was no time for self-pity now, for others had worse. She drew in a long breath, steeled herself, pushed the shadows away, and began her work. Edited by Nevneni, Dec 8 2011, 10:33 AM.
