SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    Werran
A spectral shapeshifter willing to help anyone with anything

    Summer, 5 AR

Werran was visiting the island of Angkar for only the second time since it had been stranded here. The first time had been brief, mostly staying outside of the populated areas and observing, both humanoids and their fellow animals of lesser intelligence.
But today he had gone into the port city already, named Zedrin. Slavery was a terrible thing; taking a creature's free will was the worst thing you could do.
However, it had left that behind itself, now venturing into the main city.
The shapeshifter was in the form of a reasonably good-looking human man aged 36; short tawny hair, striking, long-lashed blue eyes, and an average build. He didn't stand out too much at a height of 5'9" either, and that was the way Werran wanted it.
It also had yet to pick a name for this man, but that was something that wasn't urgent, and could be decided as he went through the city.
All the man had on him was his dark, plain clothes and a leather satchel looped across his shoulder and chest, resting at hip level on his right side. The satchel had sort of come with the form; in simplest terms the man was someone who wanted a satchel.
And Werran figured that a place to keep things wasn't a bad move, either. You never knew what you'd find.

The man's sensitive ears picked up an off-to-the-side conversation about religion. Always an interesting topic, so footsteps slowed to linger, looking around as well to try and place the people talking. Since he didn't plan on joining them, it didn't truly matter if he saw them, but getting closer always helped the ears.
He did find them, though - what appeared to be two friends, twenties, male and female.
"It was quite nice, really, you should go," the man said as Werran guided his own male's feet closer, on a path to walk by them, slowly, right hand on his satchel and the other swinging loose.
"I don't know, you know I've always never really believed," she replied, her face unsure.
"Yes, but you know it's been the same way for me. I liked this. Please tell me you'll atleast try?"
    "Okay...I will. Where is it?"
Ah, the information he was listening for. The man directed her southward and named a few landmarks, and then they began to talk about something else; their relationships. The man was married, but Werran felt that there was an unnoticed (by them, atleast) spark between these two.

Shaking his head, he walked on, heading south, keeping an eye out for the landmarks the other man had spoken of. As silly as humans, and others like them, could be, their lives could still be found interesting.
His own kin did feel love of course, but it wasn't a greatly stressed thing. Loyalty and honour were usually more important. Friendship love was also more typical than romantic or sexual. Seeing as they didn't reproduce, there was no real reason for it in that department.
After some time, he spotted the large oak tree rotted in the dirt, the last landmark. He looked into it's upper branches, the leaves green and white-tinged from the sun shining behind the tree. It was just reaching noon now, and he walked on, already seeing the start of the hill that the temple sat atop.
Once he had reached the temple, he paused several feet away, looking at it and taking it in. It was an attractive building, and after a couple minutes of study, he walked in.

Here he once again stopped, this time out of the way and in the shadows, to look at everything from a distance. There were a few people here now, but perhaps this time and day were not popular? After all, this was the biggest temple.
Well, to be honest, he probably didn't know enough about religion to be determining when was and wasn't the busiest times. As he could see now, though, this time wasn't.
With a quiet five second count exhalation of breath to steady his mind, he moved to walk down an aisle that was not the main one, and sat down on a bench, still in the shadows, though less so. He wanted to simply be ab observer for now.

A soft breeze rolled in through the window, brushing across Siën's face like the cool hands of a lover. She closed her eyes and tried to imagine it was so, the corners of her mouth tilting into a small smile, her shoulders relaxing. For a moment, it seemed possible, but the breeze faded and she slowly regained composure.
She opened her eyes and sat up straighter, looking over the students arrayed before her, bent over books. She was to monitor them, made sure they concentrated on their work, and they'd been cooperative so far, which had left her with time to think.
And all she could think about was how long it had been since she'd had anyone- a few months by now. He was gone, his face fading, and he had begun to blend in with the others in her mind. Funny how that happened, every time; how they seemed so enthralling at first, but afterwards, they became just a name on that list of people who had loved her.
And she still wanted to do it again.

She looked to the hourglass on the table beside her- the sand at the top was dwindling, the final grains slipping through the choke. She watched it intently, waiting for the last grain to fall away, and then called out to the students- "Alright, it's lunchtime, you can go."
Her words were followed by a mass scraping of chairs and shuffling of papers. They crowded out the door, Siën following slowly behind, and dispersed across the walled outdoor square that formed the temple grounds.
Siën stepped outside and squinted as her eyes adjusted to the bright noonday sun. People generally didn't visit at this time of day, and so after the student devotees had wandered off to find lunch, the place was rather desolate, the only movement coming from the clouds of dust that rose from the ground.
Siën sighed; she was not hungry and at the moment could not figure out what to do with her time, so as to escape the thoughts that stressed her so. She stood by the door of the library for a moment, gazing at the white-walled buildings and the grey stone stupa that centred the temple grounds.
The place wasn't desolate after all. A man sat on a bench in the shadows, a man she did not recognize.
She approached slowly, squinting through the sunlight to see him better. He was rather nice-looking, the tawny hair and the long-lashes...
She smiled and edged into his field of view, her hands clasped loosely in front of her navel. "Hello there. I'm High Priestess Siën- can I help you?"

He had leaned back and relaxed, soaking in the sunlight on his skin. It was nice when it wasn't so hot and humid, like that jungle had been.
Werran felt the need to get up and perhaps move into the library building, since books always had good information. But something was holding him back too.
About to turn around, a woman walked into his view, hands clasped. Interesting...and spoke to him. A name would have to be come up with soon, even if priestesses didn't normally ask a name. It was simply a good idea.
He stood and smiled, bowing very slightly.
"Yes, I think you can. At the moment I don't really believe in much, but I like to learn about religions so that I can figure out what I do believe in."
Even if this was the head priestess, he believed she would be sensible. It wasn't like he was coming here to say bad things about her religion - in fact, he wanted to learn about it. But it seemed that even when, maybe especially when, you were frank, people acted all sorts of different ways. Some would take you up on it, as if it was a dare and they didn't think you would win, and some would simply laugh and internally and dismiss your presence. Some would get angry or simply suspicious; few seemed to take your words for exactly what they were.
"So," he said after the few seconds that had paused while he thought these things, "would you be interested in teaching me? As you are the Head Priestess, I figure you would do the best job."
She looked to be maybe his age, or perhaps a bit older, a few years. He threw a charming smile in to...what was it? "Sweeten the pot" humans sometimes said. He kind of liked the phrase though at best the words themselves had no actual relation to the situation. Atleast it was creative.
He could get to the books later, as he was sure they all had interesting information. There was no limit to what it could learn.
Now for a name...Calix sounded nice. Not sure where he had heard it, but he liked it.

Siën made sure to smile and nod understandingly as he talked, her face gracious, accepting. There were many who were lost, who didn't know what to believe in. She had been one of them once, sapped of purpose and left to find her own path in the world.
And so she her path had been to come here, apparently to guide handsome younger men to salvation. She wasn't about to complain...he had such a nice smile. Dimples and straight teeth.
She fell into those blue eyes and after he had finished talking, she took a moment to surface again.
"I can certainly help- I feel it is important to have something to believe in. To carry you through life. And once you accept the gods, they are very giving." She swept her arm around her to indicate the temple grounds- the ornate buildings and stone statues, the smell of flowers and incense floating through the air. "This is what they gave me."
A life without recurring unpleasant events, without haunting memories. People who cared, friendly faces, and a beautiful home. And this rather intriguing man with long lashes.
Today felt like a good day.
"I suppose I could show you around. We are largely dedicated to Desplazamiento, god of the heavens, but we have altars for and relics of the others."

    (damn it's short, sorry D:)

The smile and eyes reeled her in, and internally Calix chuckled. Someone was easy to seduce with good looks. Not that that was an insult; just something for her to be careful of, especially if the attractive man seducing her was not even truly human.
"This is what they gave me."
He had no wish to ruin what seemed to be a good mood by pointing out how much worse off other people were and how she couldn't possibly be so singularly important for them to pick her...so he didn't say anything on that. Though she was a High Priestess, so getting that position in itself...maybe it was an indicator after all?
Besides, she was moving on, talking already about showing him around. A good thing.
"Yes, I would love a showing. Please, go ahead," he said with another smile, a slightly more coy one this time, and a sweeping bow.

Siën resisted the urge to giggle like a young girl at his bow, her smile quavering slightly as she quelled her laughter. "Alright then, follow me," she said as he surfaced from his bow.
She led the way across the temple-grounds, gesturing at a few things on the way- "We believe in nine gods- there's a stupa for each here, with relics housed within. Of course, the largest stupa is dedicated to Desplazamiento, god of the heavens." She pointed ahead, to the grand stone stupa that glittered brightly in the sun. "Many years ago, a stone fell from the sky on this spot- a message from Desplazamiento. The temple was built around the Skystone to honour him."
She paused at the door of the stupa and gestured for him to go in first, her smile accomodating. Once he went in, she followed. The room within was empty, thank the gods, and slightly stuffy in the summer heat, draped as it was with brightly coloured cloths and lit by a few ornate oil lanterns. In the central altar, resting on luxurious velvet, was the Skystone, a lump of deepest black smoothed by the searching touch of millions of fingers over the years. Siën spoke in a whisper, as was customary around such objects- "It allows one to communicate directly with the god- prayers are sent up to him through the Skystone."
She paused, feeling a great calm settling in her chest, as it always did in this place. It was like being wrapped in a comforting embrace. "I can feel him now." Her voice held a great reverence, and as she spoke, the fire in the lamp flickered, and went out.

    (-herpdaderps-)

Calix nodded, looking at everything she gestured to and more, absorbing it all, listening to her voice as she spoke. A stone falling from the sky was always an interesting experience, and easily used for many different reasons - in religion, in superstitions and omens, in a cause for creativity or inspiration.
His job right now was just to pay attention, learn everything she said, and the passing of judgement would come later.
She gestured for him to go first and he did so, looking around at the decoration and colours. Once the High Priestess came in after him, he kept pace with her, slightly behind.
He was about to whisper a reply back, perhaps something along the lines of asking if he would be allowed to touch and pray if he wished, when she spoke again, and all of the oil lanterns went out.
There was no question in his mind that these gods existed - most did, and many weren't yet known, or had faded out of the minds of humans. But he still wasn't sure what he wanted in the gods that he would pray for. Certainly showing worshipers signs of existence was a good thing, maybe even necessary. The rest...
He took a small step closer, trying to find her in the dark with a hand reached out. His fingertips brushed against her back, perhaps her shoulder blade? and he retracted his hand again, addressing her in a quietly low, calm voice - he didn't want to disturb her either because she was focused on herself or because she'd been startled by the lamps going out.
"Do you want the light back, or should I leave you alone for a bit?"

Siën smiled at this sudden darkness; it seemed that the embrace of the god had wrapped even tighter about her, enforcing her full belief in his presence.
Then, a touch on the shoulder- she jumped a little and then realized it was the newcomer. An electricity sparked in her body, that familiar excitement. It felt like being a girl again- all that tension, delirium even.
    "Ah, no, it's fine."
She reached a hand up to the lantern above the altar, drawing magic to light a small fire there.
"I'm afraid I didn't catch your name before," she said as she began to go about, lighting the other lanterns, her voice quiet, nonchalant. She sneaked a few glances at him from under her lashes- oh, how childish it seemed, yet so endlessly entertaining, exciting.

He nodded when she replied to his question.
"I'm afraid I didn't catch your name before," she said after a moment, as she went to light then lanterns around the room.
"That comes as no surprise - as no one asked for it, I didn't speak it. But the name is Calix. What about you, High Priestess? What is your name?"
The shifter returned her little glances with a steady gaze, a small smile on his lips. Despite her being religious, she was still...playful, flirtatious...what was the word he was looking for? He couldn't bring it to mind.
Regardless, it was something to be used to his advantage, and he fully intended on making such use of it.
"May I touch the Skystone and offer a prayer? Or is it only allowed for true believers to do such a thing?"

"Pleased to meet you, Calix," she said, "I'm Siën Inoxia, but you can just call me Siën." It was not uncommon for her to allow herself to be on first-name terms with acquaintances, but she said it like it was a special allowance.
She came to his side and nodded- "Go ahead. The gods belong to all the people, not to one specific group."
To make an example, she knelt by the altar, her head bowed and her hands pressed together. She was silent for a minute or so, thinking, not asking Desplazamiento for anything, but thanking him for the unexpected turn to her day. That sensation of a warm embrace tightened- she felt safe, assured of positive events in the future. Finally, when she was done, she reached up and rubbed her fingers on the stone, thus sending the message out to the god, and murmured "Amen."
