SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

The four chief nations of the western side of the world—Ashoka in northern Soare, Soto in western Soare, Morrim in eastern Soare, and Angkar, the largest of the Scattered Isles—continue to experience growth and prosperity since the fall of the Mianorite gods, although power struggles within the countries—or outside of them—continue to ensue.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

Tonight was another one of those nights where her duty as a council member came far before her own desires, for she had no desire to spend the evening at the home of a fellow council member for a lavish party with many other people, and yet that was exactly what she was doing. Dressed in more color than she normally ever would, partially to play to her host’s lavish taste, she approached Aniketos’ house in a carriage, white with silver trim and designs, sitting across from an elf who was, hell she didn’t know exactly what he was. Her and Tsuki talked in circles about their so called relationship, yet apparently they had no time for any real discussion about what they were to each other aside from the fact that they both knew that they cared about each other. Well, that was a discussion for another time; it always was.

The driver opened the door and helped her down the small set of steps, something that she didn’t normally need when dressed in her own clothing. Tonight she wore a dress, a real dress (not a robe like was her usual clothing style), silver in color with little designs embroidered in blue around the skirt. Over that she wore a pale blue velvet wrap, the same color as her eyes, that laced tight around her waist. It was a bit more suffocating that she was used to, but far from ordinary for her, and she hoped that their host would approve of the change in her attire.

“Ready for the wolves?” She asked of her companion before turning towards the mansion. The click of her heels followed her as she made her way past the main gate and up the stairs into the large and extravagant house. It was nothing like her own little shack out in the woods of the Erth’netora Forest, but then few of her fellow council members lived in anything like that. There was a time when this was exactly what she wanted, but no more. Still that didn’t stop her from taking a glass of champagne from the great hall as she made her way through the house, nodding at this official and giving a fake smile to that associate, even raising her glass in the direction of Aniketos himsef. She rarely drank, as she didn’t like feeling out of control of her own body, but a single glass of champagne at such an event wasn’t going to be an issue. She mingled for a bit, but this crowd wasn’t for her, and she guessed that Tsuki liked it even less than she did.

Her steps then, after only about half an hour or so, took her out the back entrance of the house and into the gardens. The cool night air brushing past her and cooling her mind and her nerves. It wasn’t exactly the crowd that she minded, as she saw large numbers of people every day in the streets of Madrid and at the guildhall. But the lax atmosphere of the party, the crowds intoxicated by food, drink, and other things that she didn’t even want to know about, held no interest for her, and she thought that she knew Tsuki well enough to know that the crowds, and their host Aniketos, held little of his interest as well. The gardens however were wide open and the few people that were walking or sitting amongst the flowers tended to keep to themselves. It was cool, wide open, bright enough from the light of the stars, and the music was loud enough to be heard and yet just faint enough that any conversation wouldn’t have to be shouted to be heard; an atmosphere that she was much more comfortable with. They’d arrived at a small alcove which favored lilies and orchids when she stopped and turned to Tsuki. “Thank you for coming this evening. I know it is boring and there are probably plenty of things that you’d rather be doing, but it’s a necessary evil for me, and I’m glad that you came.”

((I am of the opinion that these two need to get drunk. Just sayin'. Also, I realized that we have like... six months in between Tsuki and the Sophia incident, so this is going to pan out just a wee bit differently.))

Stripped of his customary clothing, Tsuki had donned a navy tunic and a black pair of breeches, slipped into a pair of equally black boots. There was nothing exceptionally distinguishing about his appearance save for the silver buckle of the belt around his waist and the red of his irises, though he would no doubt stand out because he had taken to something so dark compared to those who would probably attend this flamboyant display. And while he hated the social scene with a passion, here he was, sitting in a carriage with a woman across from him that he couldn't decide if he loved, liked, or was simply fascinated by. Death had been his lover for much of his life, but he had grown tired of her. Not that he was exceptionally affectionate towards any one person, but that he could tolerate another person's presence enough to endure a social gathering such as this said volumes about his preferences.

"No." His tone was flat as he followed her out of the carriage, walking fast enough only to catch up to her before he settled into a comfortable pace, his eyes staring up at the mansion briefly. Such extravagant tastes. Unimpressed by the display, his mood did not improve as they entered the building and moved through the suffocating crowd. Unlike the woman he was with, he neither smiled nor acknowledged most of the officials they passed, looking towards Aniketos only briefly and nodding his head at him, the only person he would acknowledge this evening (unless someone decided to actually bother the two of them). And only because he had to.

For the hour that they spent inside, Tsuki merely stood, his arms usually crossed over his chest as he listened to snippets of conversation Sphynx was having here and there, depending on the person who bothered to speak to her. Occasionally they would inquire after him and he would answer, though his replies were curt at best, easily ending conversations that he didn't actually want to have. Finally, for whatever reason, Sphynx was drawn to the courtyard. Snagging another glass of wine before she quit the mansion proper, he followed her to the outdoors.

"Yeah, sure." It was the only thing he had really said to her since they'd left the carriage. Sipping his wine, he looked up at the stars for a moment before he glanced towards the mansion. "We will not be returning there any time soon, will we?" Aniketos' tastes disgust me, the necromancer thought. As predicted, he had stood out quite a bit more than he'd wanted to, the dark clothing choices almost drab in comparison to those who had attended with an equal amount of flamboyance as their host. Not that he really approved of most of the people Sphynx seemed to work with.

"Ah, there is something that I have been meaning to tell you and have... not." And by meaning to tell her, he of course meant an incident that had taken place six months prior. The memory had only been triggered because he'd seen Sophia, a woman whose identity he had pieced together quite quickly based on what she had actually said rather than what she looked like. "High Inquisitor Sophia paid Soto a visit six months ago and was the one who abducted the children from Deadly Silence. I pursued her, of course, but the encounter did not end well. I had meant to mention it then, but there were... other things... I was preoccupied with at the time." Tsuki said it casually enough, though he expected that she would have some sort of adverse reaction to what he'd said. That it had slipped his mind for so long would also probably be of concern, but he had his reasons, in part, for having not told her until now.

((Well, we'll see about the drunk thing, but this might help that. XP And that's ok if this all goes differently.))

Her eyes followed his gaze back towards the monstrosity of a house owned by their host. It wasn’t her taste at all, and the extravagance of it all had nearly made her roll her eyes right in Aniketos’ face each time he’d pointed out any particular feature, but she’d managed to keep herself cordial enough. That was when they were inside, surrounded by people, nobles, councilors, and various others of her peers. Now though, “No, I shouldn’t think we’ll have to go back unless someone explicitly requests it, and even then we could most possibly say no.” That both knew that she was here mainly to keep up appearances, since she tended to ignore or flat out refuse most other social offers by the council members. Yet going to one party where the majority of them would be there was much preferable in her mind than going to each one’s home for separate dinner’s in turn; that would be completely intolerable.

Still, she had to admit, that though she rather disliked such events, Tsuki’s discomfort was even greater than her own. And she had a difficult at times keeping a straight face at how obviously out of his element he was; it was the smallest bit endearing. But she was much too grateful that he had accompanied her, lest she be thrown amongst the wolves without someone to share the horridness of it all. Not that she wasn’t used to being on her own, but she was also growing used to the elf’s company. Had anyone else offered to accompany her, she would have flatly refused. Somehow though, the company of this one other individual was tolerable, even wanted, over everyone else. She tried not to dwell on that too much.

Her eyes moved from the house to the gardens surrounding it and the path that wove between the plants and flowers. “I even believe that there is a garden path around to the front of the house if you’d prefer to leave that way, rather than walking through the main hall again.” She felt as though she had done her duty, and would not argue about taking an alternate route back to the front of the house where they could send for the carriage to pick them up. Her eyes found his then as he changed the topic, apparently wishing to discuss something else with her.

“High Inquisitor Sophia? From Ashoka? What is Ashoka doing stealing Soto’s children?” The first question that came to her mind, the one that she voice, was purely political. The second one, that she hadn’t even thought to speak aloud, was personal. What was Sophia doing stealing the children of Deadly Silence? There were rumors that the woman (if she really was a woman, or had been born one), had at one time been a member of the assassin’s guild. But there were also rumors that she at four arms (which helped her wield all the blades she was claimed to carry), that she ate the hearts of victims (Ashokan tribal nonsense), and that her mother was a wraith and her father was the devil himself (hence why she could move without being seen and kill in cold blood). Sphynx knew as well as anybody that you couldn’t believe everything that you heard.

“Wait, so you saw her stealing these children? Did she do anything to you?” Her gaze ran itself up and down his body for a brief moment, though she assumed that she would have noticed six months ago if he had been hurt. Tsuki did not do well with flesh wounds. “And what were your preoccupied with?” The last question was more to do with her own curiosity, though she knew that the bigger issue here was that the children of the most prominent Sotoan assassin’s guild had been kidnapped by the second highest ranking official of Ashoka. That would be as good for social relations between the two countries as Orion asking if he could squeeze Sphynx’s chest, as he had over a year ago.

She felt as though she should be concern, yet when it came to Deadly Silence, the guild tended to have their own ways with dealing with such things. She could write a formal notice to their guild leader in the morning, though since so much time had passed, they probably already knew all of this. While she hadn’t wanted to come to this party, the atmosphere was a bit catching, and she found she didn’t want to deal with official matters at the moment. She took another drink from her glass of wine and ended up draining it. Sphynx was not one to drink often, but she also didn’t socialize often. Just down the path a bit a waiter was walking by with a tray of drinks, and she hailed him, trading in her empty glass for two shorter glasses of some golden liquid that she had no idea what it was. All she knew, upon handing one of the glasses to Tsuki and taking a sip from her own, was that it had just enough honey to sweeten the burn of the alcohol in.

He didn't give leaving much thought, though he probably would have if the conversation hadn't made a turn of his own volition. However, he would keep that piece of information—about there being an exit through a garden path to the front of the house, which would make it easy for the two of them to slip out before anybody noticed—in the back of his mind until a more appropriate time. It sounded like an excellent plan to him.

"I do not know why she took them," he said slowly, keeping his carmine gaze averted. Was it a different sort of embarrassment that he was feeling for being unable to answer her question? Shame at being unable to figure out the answer himself beforehand, unable to get answers from Sophia? He didn't dwell much on it because there was nothing that could be done and, truth be told, Tsuki was as baffled as Sphynx was on the matter.

"No, she did not hurt me. She did, however, attempt to assert her dominance by tying me to a tree, and was quite convinced that I would try to take the children by force. Ludicrous, really, because I maintained that I had no intention of doing so and that I would walk away if she refused any of the children to me, but I also be believe that she thought I would report the matter to the guilds and that Soto would be on her heels in force to take those children back." Tsuki waited for the question that seemed to be the most obvious one Sphynx could ask: Why hadn't he reported the matter? To some degree, the answer tied in with his preoccupations and her query about them, but, on the other hand, Tsuki believed that it was none of his concern what Sophia did with those children. He was not Sotoan, he had no interests in the country's politics, and it wasn't his place to call upon the guilds to direct them towards a country that may or may not try to start a war simply for transgressing its boundaries.

He found it somewhat odd that she would be concerned for his safety.

"I was just thinking," Tsuki continued slowly, still looking away from her, now because he was deciding on what it was he wanted to say rather than the disturbed feeling that had passed through him at his inability to answer her question, "about... the things I have done in the past, and if having been able to bring back one of those children with me would have proved that I have put that behind me. Or if the urge was still there. It was a test, but because she would not give me one child, I have no way of knowing what the results of that experiment would have been." In fact, Tsuki still had the child's doll that he had found that had led him to Sophia in the first place, tucked away with his meagre things. For reasons that he didn't understand, the necromancer planned to keep it, whether or not he saw the little girl again.

"I should have informed you of the matter sooner, or that I was at least somewhat involved, but, as I said... It escaped my mind." He felt slight discomfort at admitting that fault, but he supposed it was part of this awkward growth phase in his life. He sipped the red wine from the glass in his hand—his first glass of the evening, only half of it gone.
