A spectral shapeshifter willing to help anyone with anything

Today Werran had decided on going to the No'bu Jungle. It had yet to really observe the place, or even go inside. It had always seemed sort of daunting, with all the huge, close trees and not much else, as far as it could tell. In it's spectral form now, near invisible, it sped along, drawing quickly closer and closer to it's destination. Right on the edge, Werran stopped, hovering and writhing as it thought. "Now, what form to take? I don't wish to be an animal...if I can find a human with a high heat tolerance...no normal human is going to be okay in this weather, let's messa round..." For a few moments it tweaked genetics in it's mind, it's vaporous form becoming gradually more visible as it sunk lower to the ground. It didn't matter if anyone saw it; there was no one around. And what did the shapeshifter care? If anyone had a problem, it would take about five seconds for it to leave. Otherwise, both of them could learn something. Or just the other person. Or if there were more...well, you get the idea. With a twitch it shapeshifted into a slender male human with light brown skin, wearing only a loincloth. In his right hand was a staff, reaching a few inches above his head to a height of six foot two. Long, thin arms were not as weak as they looked. This form didn't even sweat at this heat and humidity, not if standing still or walking leisurely. Sweating was improved, he could run like the wind, and climb trees quickly and efficiently. He was also great at using his staff as a weapon. Agility was already spoken for. A grin with a wide mouth that showed large, off-white teeth and he was striding towards the forest edge, bare feet calloused enough to handle just about anything he stepped on. |

Ladon stood, feet braced wide apart, in the shade of one of the larger trees at the jungle's edge and watched the man appear quite literally from thin air. While he had seen many humans do many strange things, he had never seen one do that. Perhaps it wasn't a human at all? Drifting forward from the shelter of the trees, mincing along carefully on tender feet, Ladon angled to put himself between the stranger and the forest. Whatever it, he, was, he had the look of one who might belong to one of the few tribes of humans that dwelt in the jungle. He looked, as it were, perfectly normal for a human and the naga was struck by the desire to know if he felt like one or any other number of things. The concept of shifting shapes was not an unfamiliar one to Ladon, after all he stood now on two legs, clad in ill-fitting human clothes, looking for all the world like a human himself. Magic such as appearing out of midair, however, was something that was still well beyond the realm of his limited magical experiences and as always he wanted to know more. When he bent to offer a greeting, there was something almost quizzical about the set of his head as he dipped it in a cursory bow, straightening almost before he had finished speaking," Namaste?" It came out more like a question than he'd intended, but then it probably mattered little. Few, if any, humans had ever seemed to notice the significance, and to be completely truthful Ladon hardly believed in the apparently ancient concept of a god dwelling within every soul. Still, as a bid for attention it would work nicely. |

The man checked his stride when the human appeared. Since his senses were only slightly enhanced beyond the average humans', he couldn't tell that it was an illusion. If he'd been in his natural form, or an animals', he may have been able to smell it. But it was surprising that it hadn't seen the man before, or atleast sensed him in some other way. By the time he'd stopped, the man was giving a greeting in what appeared to be his own tongue. Marchal (the name it had decided this an would have) didn't smile, bowed back and greeted him with the same word, almost mimicking the accent. He figured that even if it was revealed he didn't know the language, it was still suitable to greet one with their own greeting, in their own tongue. "You are standing in my way. Do you wish something of me?" he asked after a few moments. "My apologies if I sound rude. I suppose I have the time to converse, if that's what you want. I have all the time in the world, really." He smiled slightly, a small chuckle accompanying it. That was Werran talking though, of course. Humans weren't long-lived. Spectral shifters, however, were very long-lived. This near-immortality reminded it of it's banning - they'd said three thousand years. Usually his kind didn't live that long, usually three quarters or so of that, and it was already aged somewhat along that timeline. The Group members always had a better sense of time in the physical plane than most other shapeshifters. That was a big reason they were picked. He looked back at the human, noticing now the strange eyes, the very red hair. Attractive, in a I'm-different way. |

Ladon studied the creature with new interest when it replied in his own tongue, only to assume a rather crestfallen expression when it immediately began to rattle off something in common. The laugh that followed, however, was not discouraging so he smiled back and attempted to make sense of the few words he hadn't been able to twist into some sort of sense. "Converse?" he ventured, the word rolling off of his tongue flavored with his heavy accent. Whatever it was apparently took time, possibly a lot of it from the way the human had talked even if he suspected it to be an exaggeration. No human truly had all the time in the world, after all. Freshly reminded of his own ineptitude with the language, the naga took care when he opened his mouth next to speak," I only wanted to know.... Trick you did, coming here out of nowhere. how did you do it?" "I have never seeing it before," he finished, canting his head to the side to fix bright eyes on the stranger's face without budging from his path. ((It actually sort of pains me typing out the way he talks. lol)) |

(yeah I badly want to correct his sentences xD) Marchal smiled slightly again, waiting for him to finish asking his questions before he replied with answers. "Converse just means to talk, have a conversation, chat...and so on. And the appearing out of nowhere? I didn't, not really." The shapeshifter paused for a moment, running fingers along the staff in his hand, thinking of how much he could let the naga know. He didn't seem like the type to gossip, and even if he was, what did it matter? Werran didn't need to hide. "Well, it's probably because you've never seen someone who's invisible become visible. Or my kind, for that matter. I'm a spectral shapeshifter, after all. Our original forms are vaporous, and can therefore be turned invisible if we wish it. What I did was come here in my original form, invisible, and then shapeshift into this human form. I can turn into anything, really." And to show that it could, the shifter ran through a few forms; a black wolf, a blonde-haired female human, a male drow, a red-tailed falcon, a bullfrog, a light brown-haired faun, and then back to the dark-skinned man it had originally chosen. "Well, not quite anything. I can't do mythical beasts yet because the physical plane has messed with my ability to shapeshift. The fact that they either aren't believed to exist or actually don't is part of that interference. But I'm learning." After a moment, unsure of what the naga might think mythical creatures were, he spoke again. "Things like dragons and gryphons, phoenixes, unicorns. I know for certain there are some species of creatures that are similar to dragons, and small versions, but I mean the very large ones. Same with phoenixes." |

"Ah," he murmured in response to the explanation, and might have spoken more if the young man hadn't begun to speak once more. It wasn't terribly surprising, but it was most definitely disappointing when the man began to speak of things he'd never heard of before, but all of that rather fell to the wayside when he began to change shapes. The first he had never seen before, but it had something of the look of the human's dogs, if larger and fluffier. He would have happily examined it further, but the shapeshifter was changing again and again. He could change shapes himself, but hardly so effortlessly. Even now he could feel the vague current of discomfort in the back of his head, but none of that showed on the stranger's face. The naga leaned forward, eyes wide with something very close to excitement when the man began to speak again. As before, a great deal of it simply went over his head; he'd had little experience with human myths, but he did know that the stranger was speaking of his inability to change into something from those myths. "Can do anything that is not mythical?" he demanded, rather like a child who has just discovered a particularly fascinating new toy. ((Yes, so do I. lol)) |

The spectral shapeshifter had noticed the curiosity as he changed forms, and wondered if maybe he was doing it too quickly for the man to observe properly. Once he'd finished, it had become quite obvious he was excited about the whole thing, and he'd gone on to ask a question - unfortunately a...strange one. Werran only knew two languages. It hadn't had enough time yet to start studying any others besides it's native tongue, and what was called common here. So it was always a little difficult to remember this sort of thing - that maybe this guy wasn't understanding everything he said. Maybe even not half of it. That would be bothersome. Maybe making an effort toward understanding whatever this man's native language was would be a good idea. Suddenly remembering something, he took a few steps closer and said, "I believe we forgot to exchange names. This human's name is Marchal. What is your's?" After a few ore seconds, he continued. "But to answer your question - all of those shapes you saw were not mythical. The ones I listed, and a few others, are the mythical ones. I can turn into wolves, dogs, bears, cats, snakes, falcons, eagles, fish, salamanders, lizards, frogs, songbirds and so on...and any humanoid as well. Humans, elves, anthros, goblins, dwarves, centaurs, mermaids, fairies...you name the smallest or the largest creature and I can almost certainly turn into it." Some of the largest creatures were mythical ones, though. After a moment, the man's eyes turned a golden yellow. "Hm yes, I quite like that. Goes well with the skin," he muttered to himself, stroking his chin. "Oh! And would you like me to change shapes, and you can pick which ones you would like to observe more closely? Picking forms is usually a relatively easy task, and often fun, so what do you say?" Edited by Werran, Oct 21 2011, 05:57 PM.

Blinking, long and slow, the naga considered the deluge of information. "Marchal," he murmured as if tasting the flavor of the word in his mouth," My name is Ladon." Something seemed off about the man's mode of address, but Ladon didn't delve any deeper than his own lack of familiarity with the language. Perhaps he was simply a little odd... Or perhaps he had stolen this man's life? The thought did not sit well with Ladon and the stories of shapeshifters among his own people had merely been stories, after all, meant to frighten the young. He was no longer a child to be scared of a story, or at least that was what he attempted to tell himself. Still, he couldn't find it in himself to shake the fascination of watching the man change so easily from shape to shape. He did not know most of the creatures Marchal had listed, but a few had certainly caught his attention. "Birds?" he had always loved the bright things, and often collected their bright feathers for ornaments or simply for keepsakes. Some humans had been happy enough to trade for some of his better finds, though he'd only gotten little curiosities in return. "Like birds," he supplied with a quick smile, teeth flashing white against the warm ochre of his skin. ((I'm sorry this took so long. .-. I've been having the weirdest time trying to write for him. I think it's cause he's so...peppy and I was so tired.)) |

(I'm sorry I took as long as I did too...I'm going to try and post to our other thread tomorrow...I actually didn't notice you posted in this one and I hadn't checked for some time as I've been museless, for the most part) Marchal nodded in response to the man's giving of his name, then grinned. "I can work with birds. How about some pretty ones, yes, like a peacock?" At that he shifted, turning into a male peacock. He strutted and displayed to Ladon for a few minutes, then held still for a bit before shifting into another bird - a blue jay. He flew around the naga's head for a minute before alighting on his shoulder. After that Werran went through a bird of paradise, a scarlet tanager, a mountain bluebird, a kingfisher and a painted bunting; making sure to leave enough time in each form for Ladon to observe as thoroughly as he wished. Instead of going back to his previous human form - since the shapeshifter could now see it would be kept here for some time - it chose a female form. She was pale, freckled, red-haired (not as red as Ladon's though) and hazel-eyed. Her clothes were plain and hung loosely, and at her belt was a machete and two daggers. "This human's name is...Cassie." Cassie smiled with her thin lips, showing off white teeth. Edited by Werran, Nov 1 2011, 07:21 PM.
