High Inquisitor of Ashoka

Sometimes she loved her job. Sometimes she hated it. Today was somewhere in between those two. Originally when a small group of tribesmen had begun to make a nuisance of themselves she had ignored it, left it for local authorities to handle. When that did not happen she had put out a wanted ad. That had yet bore no fruit, and she had some time to kill so she had come here herself to put an end to them. Where she was hunting was mostly a featureless wasteland, there were rocky outcrops a plenty, and enough room for groups to hide, but nothing of more than one or two people at a time. This meant that their camp was very easy to spot, even in the half light of the evening, the tents and smoke from fires stood out. As she had not been tracking them and had just wandered over more or less and relied on instinct and half leads she made sure to do a fly over at height and use her magically enhanced senses to make sure these were the right people. And they were. She had seen the leader, a man recognizable by the tattoo of two scorpion's fighting each other on his arm out in the open. Achai seemed none to worried about anything. He should be, when someone cause the High Inquisitor to need to do something, they had better have a good reason. A disagreement with the rest of their tribe over whether to walk with or against the wind was not a good reason, and resorting to banditry to supply yourself, even if it was only minor, was not a good reason either. The men sat around the fire, talking, laughing. They did not look up, the idea that something deadly waited above them was alien. Suddenly the wind picked up and swirled around causing the fire to splutter and struggle before it died. One man swore a lot and tried to get it restarted. Using the dark and distraction of the dead fire Sophia landed silently behind the nearest tent. She counted about eighteen men, although any who were in the tents would increase the number. She guessed about twenty, twenty two tops in total. She walked around the tent and straight up to one man, stripped to the waist and covered in tattoo's who turned and opened his mouth to speak. Before the first word left his mouth Sophia had drew her blade, the pitch black blade Mistolin, simple in appearance but with a slight green aura, and held it to his throat. He paused, and Sophia whispered three words "Scream for me". He complied as she stabbed him three times through the chest in rapid succession. Suddenly the whole camp was awake, alive and rushing into action. Only twenty people, thought the assassin and High Inquisitor who had been called the Mistress of Blades, not worth using anything fancy on. She did nothing as people spilled out around her surrounding and, they thought, preventing any escape. "My name is Sophia Orjtarn" she spoke simply and clearly "Are you all ready to die?" she asked without sounding cocky or arrogant, it was a mere matter of fact statement. She was going to hold back heavily, it could only go one way. Her facial expression remained dead as a slight wind blew at the the dark green jacket she wore, open showing a white shirt underneath and with black trousers. She could almost have been at a semi important meeting and came here on a whim to get out of it, grabbing the jacket on the way for warmth. |

There were times that Eli wished she was better at ranged weapons. Sure, she was decent with throwing knifes, but their range was exactly impressive. With twenty to one odds, something like a bow would be extremely helpful. Alas, she would have to make due with what she had. If this group didn't have a good sized bounty on their heads, the wanderer might have left as soon as she saw how badly they outnumbered her. Smaller bands, say ten or fifteen, were easier - pick off anyone who wandered off to relieve themselves, or any friends that eventually went to find them. Once the numbers were whittled down enough and most of those left had gone to bed, approach the camp and kill as many as possible as silently as possible. By the time anyone caught on to what was happening, it would be a somewhat fair fight. Eli had been lurking in the shadows beyond the camp for nearly an hour. Well, not just lurking. There had been two men had wandered off to heed the call of nature. It would probably be a bit longer before anyone noticed them missing though. This was going to be a very long night. When the campfire was suddenly put out by a strange wind, Eli was as surprised as anyone who'd been basking in it's warmth. Wind just didn't do that. Well, maybe wind did that to a candle, but not a campfire. Any urge to take advantage of the sudden darkness and already panicked man was smothered by the feeling that there was something very wrong with this situation. That wind was unlikely to have been an act of nature, it was probably best to stay out of the way of whoever thought themselves strong enough to take out twenty men directly. It wasn't like she was going to run away! Nothing like that. Eli just didn't want to be mistaken for a target. In fact, it probably couldn't hurt to get a bit closer. Who knew, it could end up being some idiot mage who thought that a bit of magic made him invincible. She wanted to be close enough to lend a hand if it was needed. The darkness made it easy for the half-elf to sneak closer to the camp. She stopped behind an outcrop, within throwing distance of some of the men. Another woman was walking towards them on the opposite side. Eli recognized the name, the woman was an official of the state and, if rumor was correct, more than able to take out the camp. Not rushing in had definitely been the right idea. |

There was but a moments pause as the group seemed to consider attacking her, or not. "She's only one person..." one began, and then a few looked at each other. Six charged at once. Sophia turned slightly to face one head on and her hand twitched slightly, and for a moment her arm was but a slight blur. Those with unnaturally attuned senses would have been able to see her move, but these men here could not. All six fell, two dead, three badly wounded and the last merely grazed, and thus able to continue his swing. The blade moved but Sophia simply wasn't there, again with the same blinding speed she had moved just a step to the side. Without resorting to the rapid speed of before she launched a trio of strikes of deadly precision. "Your sentence was decided the moment you opposed his highness" Sophia remarked calmly, a lie, she wasn't especially caring of what they thought of Orion. She pointed at one more, next to the leader "Bang" there was a snap as the mans neck turned in a complete circle and he fell to the floor. The others began to run, some slowly backing away, others in a panic but a sudden burst of wind originating from Sophia knocked them to the floor. Only one survived to stand, the leader, Achai. Sophia walked up to him and smiled "You live" she smiled a smile which spoke something of how much he was soon going to wish he hadn't. Sophia swiftly hit him over the head with the flat of her blade. "Anymore?" she called out. All around insects twitched and sprang into life, moving, chirping. Some where behind an outcrop, next to a certain half elf. They made no noise at all, an obvious gap in the cacophonous sound. Sophia turned to face the direction this lack of noise originated from. Her blade still drawn she began walking towards the gap in the chorus of insectoid noise. Seemed some had hid from her quite effectively. She needed to be better. She had to be so much better than this. She could see him as she walked, one body, seemingly hurt, crawling away... |

"She's only one person..." Eli wondered how much experience these men actually had in combat. One person, with sufficient skill could do a lot of damage. Some of the veteran mercenaries back on the island could hold off all of the rookies at once during training sessions. It had been a valuable lesson for all of them: never underestimate your enemy, no matter how much the fight seemed to be in your favor. Unfortunately for the men, the would never get to chance to use this encounter as a life lesson, as the woman cut them down with practiced ease. It was beyond impressive, she could not be more than a few years older than Eli, and yet the woman handled her weapon with much more skill. Clearly, this Sophia Orjtarn had superior training, and had likely dedicated much of her life to learning the art of combat. Eli might have picked up some useful talents during her wandering, but she'd never stayed in one place long enough to truly master any craft. One injured man attempted to craw into the darkness before Orjtarn could strike at him again. He wasn't a very lucky soul because he was crawling straight to Eli's hiding spot. Or maybe the man had seen something in this area and thought it was an ally. A throwing knife flew from Eli's hand, a gurgle followed and then silence. Too much silence. Why weren't there bug noises around her? The wanderer looked back towards the camp and held back a curse. The other woman was heading in this direction. Any moron would be able to guess that the dagger in the still warm corpse meant that there was someone else nearby. Orjtarn has no reason to assume that the unknown person did not want to threaten her. Eli held her position. Retreating or making a move in the other woman's direction could easily end in death. She would stay hear until the Orjtarn called out, or moved to attack. It was probably a terrible choice, but it was probably slightly better than any of the other options. |

There he was, the man Sophia could only assume was the reason the insects had alerted her to this direction when she commanded them to cry out for the all clear. She placed her foot on his back to pin him in place, and then stopped. She hadn't used a throwing knife. And yet there one was, plain as day. Maybe there was more going on here than she assumed at first. In fighting? No, this had clearly been thrown at him as he was running away from outside the camp. She stepped back, her senses fueled and enhanced by magical forces on constant vigil, and flipped him over. There, clearly on his torso a wound from her sword, unless someone else had one very much like it. Possible, but her hand and a half katana was not usually the kind of weapon the tribesmen favored. There was someone else here. Right now. Who, after she had wounded this man had finished him off. Once again she sent out a mental command to all insects in the area, and once again they erupted into a loud, discordant, song. All of them but those right in front of her. Whoever it was, they were right there. Behind her reality slowly tore itself open, a great blue mark upon the air itself appeared and then, tens, hundreds of blades of all sorts pointed out just a fraction, framing the High Inquisitor. "I advise whoever is hiding makes themselves known to me" she remarked cooly "Before I shred this entire area" she gestured to where the insects had been silent. She reached for the other person's knife, and it flew from the corpse into her hand, she held it out forwards "After all, don't you want your knife back?" she smirked slightly. The groups leader was still alive back there, she knew. But she had hit him hard, he wasn't waking up any time soon. Whoever this was... Well, she wanted to know. Partly because they could somehow be affiliated with the group, but mostly because they had avoided being seen, and she wanted to know if that was due to some gap in her abilities, random chance or their skill at concealment, or most likely some mixture thereof. And if they were not part of the group... Well, it was possible someone else had picked up the bounty, she supposed. Or they were a passer by who got involved for... Whatever reason. She reserved her judgement. For now. |

As expected, Orjtarn was able to successfully add two and two together in order to get someone was hiding in the darkness. The whole ripping up the sky effect might have been a little bit of overkill, the bit where the woman had slaughtered a camp full of armed men had kind of clued Eli into the fact that pissing this individual off would be a very bad idea. "I advise whoever is hiding makes themselves known to me, before I shred this entire area" Again with the overkill. Apparently they didn't teach things like temperance or conservation of energy at scary person school. And shredding the entire area did not sound good for the environment. . .or Eli's health. "After all, don't you want your knife back?" Oh, well that sounded a bit more friendly, unless the woman planned to sheath it somewhere uncomfortable. Like Eli's throat, or anywhere else that might cause blood loss. That sort of thing would certainly fit with Orjtarn's apparent habit of being completely terrifying. "I would rather avoid the shredding thing if you don't mind too much." Eli said as she stood and stepped out of the deep shadows. "This is a new tunic. I would be sad to get blood on it." Flippancy was Eli's mother tongue, and that wasn't going to change no matter how scary the other person might be. Predators smelled fear. Showing it just made you prey, and she hated being prey. So, she'd deflect it, bury it deep. It'd worked before, it would work now. |

Oh, so this was a flippant one. This could be good or bad, depending on just how much of a nuisance they made themselves to be. Still, Sophia was fairly sure she had nothing to fear from her, after all if she was strong enough to be a threat why was she hiding in the first place? No, she was either one of them trying to cover her tracks or, if against them, not capable of dealing with them on her own in any way other than slowly, one at a time. Time would tell which. Sophia looked her up and down as she spoke "Well, that would be a shame wouldn't it?" she replied dryly before continuing "Although you might perhaps have chosen better words. Had I been a more violent person I might have just" she clicked her fingers and one blade fired from the portal, well over Eli's shoulder "Decided to do that" She shrugged and the portal faded to nothing behind her "Perhaps you would like to explain what you were doing here? I was led to believe nobody else was around other than members of this little group." she took a few steps closer to Eli and sheathed her sword "And you don't look like a tribesman to me, if I might say" she held out the knife for her to take "And this does not look like the kind of weapon they would use, the balance and weight is off for their style. Good shot, though" she complemented, and Eli would not be aware how high praise that was, provided Sophia was not mocking her. Which she only was a little bit. Seeing as she was closer Sophia took the chance to have a better look at her. Slim build, brown hair, blue eyes, and shorter than her. Although that was more because Sophia was very tall than anything else. No, Sophia did not think she was a tribesman. "Your an assassin, I take it?" she asked, and it seemed reasonable. After all, she was alone, she seemed fond of stealth... Although maybe that was just projecting herself onto this stranger. Whatever the reason, Sophia felt herself becoming less hostile to the woman. |

Eli gave her best smile when a blade of probable death was fired over her shoulder, sure her eye might have widened a little bit, but she resisted there was no dramatic reaction. That was good, Orjtarn seemed to want to hog all of the drama for herself tonight, she probably wouldn't like it if Eli screamed like a little girl or something. "Right, canning the snark." It would be really hard to not be blatantly sarcastic, but the half-breed was willing to reign herself in if it mean not being impaled by magic blades that came from the sky. The other woman continued to speak, apparently Eli didn't look like a tribesman, nor did she fight like one. The compliment may or may not have been honest, but she wasn't going to complain about that. "I'm not an assassin, more of a vagrant Jack-of-all-trades." Eli said. Vagrant might have been the wrong word to describe herself as, she didn't have a house of her own, but it wasn't like she couldn't afford to stay at an inn when one was available. "More of a drifter than a vagrant maybe, I bath too often to qualify for vagrancy." Almost as soon as it was handed over the returned knife was hidden away in one of the many holsters concealed on Eli's person. Half a second later, she also produced a folded up piece of paper with the bounty detail written on it. Funnily enough, the wanted ad had been issued by the woman standing before her. Or maybe it wasn't funny, death was kind of a morbid subject. "I thought I would try my hand at the bounty, The wandered explained, "but seeing as two and a half tribesmen don't really count as the whole camp, it looks like I'll be earning coin some other way. |

Sophia listened calmly, although her blood was still slightly up from the, albeit, short fight. Although it had not pushed her as much as she would have liked. She wondered what kind of challenge the woman would be, but it was but an idle wondering. She had no desire to fight her, especially when it became obvious that they were on the same side, sort of. She was after the bounty, and it had been Sophia's impatience and boredom that led her to take away the chance of income away from her. Boredom largely caused by the fact her occult research was progressing so slowly. Largely because those books used big words that took her minutes to decipher each. It was notable that any official statement she put out in writing used but simple words, although if confronted that was for the idiot populace. "Good. Someone with personal hygiene, I like that" she commented "Too often the wandering types think they can go without. Although I must admit, the communal baths in Ashoka? I can understand why" Sophia turned and walked a few steps away from Eli, to the leader who was not dead, but merely out cold. "Tell you what, I won't pay you in full but I'll pay for you to have a place to crash someone nice in Eldahar tonight, hows that sound?" she offered "Well, I won't pay, I'll tell them to put you up, but same difference" she shrugged and leaned down, placing her hand around the tribesman's neck "Unless there was anything else you wanted?" she inquired, moving his head to the side "Did you find much out about these guys?" she asked "I never got the sense they were connected at all, but if they are I need to keep this one alive to question. I didn't want to make a snap decision in combat" she asked and explained, letting go and standing up once more. She looked back to Eli "I guess I seem very businesslike, don't I?" she laughed, sort of, it was more a chuckle that sounded unpracticed and wrong coming from her "I didn't used to be like that" she sighed "I too was once a wandering vagrant who made sure to bathe often, although I tended mainly to work as an assassin. Sophia Orjtarn, Mistress of Blade, assassin for the very wealthy. Sometimes I miss that" she looked up and grinned wryly. Things changed. Right now she spent her whole day either in books she struggled to read or rounding people for Orion. What a life. |

Eli's smile widened when Orjtarn not only didn't kill her for making another joke, but actually made one of her own. Or at least it had sounded like a joke. At the very least the other woman's reply had leaned more towards witty than completely serious. If the communal baths bothered the woman, then she it was unlikely that she'd grown up using them. Weird considering that she was a state official. Having grown up with more half-siblings than she could count on one hand, Eli hadn't found them very strange. "Communal baths, just like home. Only with less splashing." "A place to stay sounds more than fair." Not spending money on a place to stay was almost the same as making money. Plus it was going to be a nice place. Eli usually stuck to the moderately less expensive decent places. Still more expensive than bad places, but it was a small price to pay for not getting disemboweled in her sleep. One must have standards. "I didn't exactly have a conversation with any of them, but I did hear one say something about finding pretty girls nearby for some fun. My guess was they were planning a raid." Eli's voice lost much of its humor when she said the last bit. One of the men had shouted out some pretty lewd suggestions when he'd been searching for his missing friend. Their idea of fun didn't involve consent. Cutting that bastard's throat had been a mercy to the world. Sophia Orjtarn's laugh didn't sound right coming from her, she seemed more the type to chuckle sinisterly as she plotted to kill you. Though, that might just have been Eli's general distrust of people with power. She suspected most of that sort to be evil chucklers. "Eli, formerly of Angkar. Also formerly a mercenary, I don't miss it." |

"I'll take your word for it" Sophia replied simply, although the obvious implication was she had never had a home, it did not sound like that was something that bothered her. Her past shaped her into who she was, but she wasn't haunted by the fact she missed out on a normal life. Technically she had shared a bath with someone... But the fact her supposed guardian was making a lot of money out of it and the fact she had do some things which were clearly not family activities somewhat dulled that. She regretted not knowing more, not knowing that some things were wrong, when she was a kid. But missing a typical family? No. She may have been forced into all kinds of situation, beaten and broken before she was even in double digits age wise, but it made her who she was. It made her strong and it made her who she was. She nodded as Eli continued. Seems it was a good thing she hunted them down when she did. Not that she didn't trust Eli... But it was good to know herself. "So they were bandits and scum, not activists?" she asked rhetorically, and turned to where she had left the still unconscious leader "Guess there is no reason to leave him alive then" she gestured to the man and he raised up until he was suspended in midair. She looked at him for a moment before asking "So, do I just kill him, or do I do something worse? Unless you feel like doing it. If this was a focused political group then I would have tortured him... It seems unfair he dies comfortably when what he is was worse, wouldn't you say?" "Anyway, your choice on how he goes. after that I can take you to Eldahar, sort you somewhere nice to stay and perhaps we could share a bottle of wine, if your interested?" she asked, seemingly not worried about the man hovering in front of her doing anything if he awoke. "I managed to steal quite a lot of the old King's wine cellar when I became High Inquisitor. There some stuff there I could never even dream of affording. Naturally I am not going to save or treasure it all." she smirked. "Consider it an extra bonus, if you will. Some of those bottles are worth more than what I would make in a year" she declined to add that her salary was reasonably modest for what she did. She figured it was needed more to build the Inquisition, and anyway, she had enough stolen wine and confiscated goods to last her. She could just requisition whatever she wanted, so money wasn't a great need of hers. |

Eli's stomach turned at the suggestion of doing "something worse" than just killing the bandit leader. While she was no stranger to killing, torture wasn't something she'd ever been party too. If any of the mercenaries back home had ever felt the need to cause that sort of pain, it had happened well above her pay grade. It just seemed wrong, especially since there was no purpose to the act beyond a vague since of revenge. "Just kill him and be done with it." Eli's tone was serious, betraying her unease with the subject. The prospect of wine moved Eli's thoughts away from the whole killing thing. Wine was good, rare stolen wine was even better. In general she was a pretty big fan of any luxury that was free. Not that the woman went around stealing things for fun, or at all when it wasn't absolutely necessary, but it was nice to occasionally enjoy something without worrying about not being able to afford bread later. "That sounds lovely, thank you." Her gaze flickered back to the unconscious, and soon to be dead, bandit. There was no reason she needed to be there for his execution, really you see one man loose his head and you've seen them all. "Right, I'll let you finish up here, I need to go grab my pack. I left it...near some other dead people." Near was a bit misleading. It implied that the Eli's small satchel of worldly possessions was just lying on the ground next to a pair of cold corpses. That would have been sloppy. She'd made sure to hide it a short distance away so that anyone who stumbled across the bodies wouldn't be able to jump to any conclusions about actually being up against a lone fighter. |

"Just kill him and be done with it" she said. Very well. With a slight flick of the wrist the man's head simply imploded as Sophia pushed at it from all sides with massive amounts of telekinetic force. That marked them all dead. That meant now, she could take all their souls for herself to use for her own purpose. She reached to a small device, which locked almost identical to a pocketwatch and clicked it open. A mist collected from all the corpses, swirled around and collected above it, before dissolving into it. The minute hand moved slightly forwards. Good. She was getting close to being able to progress. In some ways she was glad Eli had walked away for that. She didn't like the idea of what she was doing spreading, in case it passed to somebody with the same Occult research as her who would know what she was doing. She waited for Eli to get back, hand on her hip "Do you have a horse or anything? I can fly back quickly, or can run alongside any animal you have." she offered. She could offer her a lift, but that would be very close and personal, and she was not overly sure that she wanted to do that with someone who was a stranger who might want to kill her. It was never a good idea to take that risk. "Up to you really" she shrugged. |

It took a few minutes for Eli to backtrack all the way back to her pack, but the bag was right where she'd left it. The pack wasn't all of her gear, just whatever she might need for a mission that would not fit on her person. Also some food just in case she couldn't make it back to her ride. The small pack attached to Sunil's tack didn't add much to her world possessions, really it was more of his toiletries than hers. And his food of course. Once it had been recovered, the woman cupped her hands to her mouth and let out a lark-like whistle that pierced the air. The sound of hoofs pounding on solid ground soon approached. Sunil, was hard to find in the dark, his grey-blue coat blended into the darkness well, however the restless stallion could not sneak for the like of him. It was always best to leave him back from her intended targets. In this case he was close enough to call if an escape was needed, but not quite close enough to hear from the camp. Unless he decided to rush the camp, again. The horse had a streak of male gallantry that popped up at the worse times. If he weren't so good on long journeys, Eli might have been tempted to at least consider trading him for a beast that would actually listened. Maybe something less tall, not a pony certainly, but smallish-er. So she wouldn't have to jump just to get a foot in the stirrup. Or she just needed to learn how to fight in those tall lady-heels that were so popular in the higher classes. Perhaps that was some magic that let one defy physics when wearing those things? The ride back to camp was quick, and Orjtarn had thankfully already finished with the bandit leader. "You don't need to need to wait for me. I might not be a one woman army, but the road back shouldn't throw anything at me that I can't handle. Besides, I'm sure you have state-type things waiting for you." |

"State type things... Yes, probably" Sophia responded in a tone which made it evident that conducting business of state was not something she was overly keen on. She had this job for the opportunity to become stronger herself, and for the power it brought her. She did not want it for all the little, stupid things she had to do. Ashoka could rot for all she cared, as long as she had an army to use if she needed it (and Orion could be convinced) and a ready supply of materials, originally in the form of knowledge, although now the main thing that she was after was living souls. Well, recently dead ones. Still, she did get plentiful resources, she did get highly skilled soldiers to train with, ones who could challenge her if she thought with her martial skill alone and left all her superhuman skills behind. She supposed there was always a price to pay. And in her case the price was a bunch of tasks she cared nothing for and dealing with Orion when he was not in a mood that suited her. Was it really all that bad? No, just a little annoying. "Well, head back and go to the 'Moghul's Crown', I will have the landlord informed that you are to stay the night on the Inquisition. Do you know it?" it was one of the nicer places, although if you were to go all out there were better. Sophia liked it, there was no pretentiousness or snobbery, it was a good place and was content with that, it was not trying to be the best, it was content with doing everything well. "I will go on ahead, let them know and sort the paperwork out for this" she gestured around her at the corpses "And probably meet you there for a bottle of wine later. If you want a drink before I get there, put it on my tab. You will be stopped when you start taking the piss." She turned and jumped into the air, hanging there and turning back to Eli to see if there was anything that the mercenary wanted or felt she needed to add before she flew off back to the capital. |
