SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    Meryn

The notice dangled loosely from her fingertips and fluttered in the faint breeze that blew through the square as Meryn peered up at the building, contemplating her options. Pegleg Bill was notorious for - well, Meryn didn't exactly know what, but he was certainly causing problems in Ashoka, what with all his raids and whatnot. Apparently his activities had finally reached a breaking point with the respectability around here. They were offering quite a hefty reward for help in 'finding his location and any of his cohorts'. Meryn knew roughly where Pegleg was now. Getting there was the only issue.

In and of itself, the reward was enough to attract Meryn's attention, but there was a bit more going for decision of taking the job than that. The guild. Apparently Pegleg had somehow gotten his hands on a highly magical device capable of storing life-energy. The user of this device would be able to place life-energy inside it, and then take it out and de-age himself whenever he wanted. This device was something that the guild head wanted, and wanted badly; he'd very politely demanded that the young thief go and get it for him. Considering the nature of the device, Meryn couldn't blame him.

And there was always the little fact that pirates tended to carry treasure around with them, and there was nothing that Meryn liked more than treasure.

Still, that didn't mean that she wanted to work for some respectable that was likely to use her, hand her the money, and then toss her aside without allowing her the chance she needed to get at the device - and whatever other little treasures laying about that Meryn could snitch.

In the end, it was the transport that decided her. Boats weren't her favored mode of travel, and she knew it would be difficult to find even one that would be willing to take her, a lowly little thief, exactly to where she needed to go. A respectable, however... They'd be able to get whatever they needed, no problem. With a sigh, Meryn went inside the building and made her way up the steps, wondering exactly what would meet her at that second floor. She'd heard tales of Sophia, that much was certain, but it didn't mean much. She wasn't likely to come across the lady herself. More likely it would be a secretary or some such person who would then relay her offer to take the job to Sophia.

Meryn pushed open the door and entered.

To her surprise, Sophia was within. However, she easily masked her shock and instead of reacting to the presence of the respectable, simply held up the notice that she'd torn off of a wall. "I know where he is," she said without preamble.

    High Inquisitor of Ashoka

The High Inquisitor sat behind her desk, a book in her hand. Slowly she scanned over the words, trying to link the marking on the page with a word she knew. It was taking time, but she was getting better, the written word was making more and more sense to her as time went on. Which was good, it was embarrassing to need to get people to write letters out for her, or to read mission statements and whatnot. She sighed as she placed the book on the table. She could learn how to move buildings with her mind, but this was by far the most difficult task she had... She was too old to pick things up quickly. She was occasionally deathly afraid of aging, she was only 27, but she was well aware that with the amount of magical force she pumped through her body all her muscles and organs would give out before she was old, and that was if someone didn't put a sword through her neck sometime.

Her ears, heavily magically enhanced, heard someone walking up the stairs. She turned her head ever so slightly so she was facing the door, slightly adjusting her sash. She wore a plain white sash over a black shirt which had her personal symbol of the spider in red on her left breast. Her hand reached slightly for one of the swords that lay on her desk, and she placed it down by the side, next to the Mistolin, her own personal blade, made out of the twenty melted down Ashokan relics and then with part of her own soul inside. Although it didn't look like much other than a simple blade of dead black with a slight green aura and purely functional in appearance.

The woman came in through the door "I know where he is". Sophia looked her over, and decided to at least give her a moment of her time.

"Which one?" she asked, and pointed to the wall behind Meryn, upon which five wanted posters were hung four of which were men. "And take a seat" she considered letting her sit at the desk, but decided against it and stood up, taking a couple of steps to the window, where an armchair and a sofa lay looking out over the fountain in the square below. It just seemed nicer. Assuming the woman indicated who and then walked over she would take a seat in the armchair and proceed to ask her "Can I get you anything to drink? And tell me where, and if you can reveal how you know" she paused "Ah, I am getting ahead of myself, I am Sophia" she offered her hand. A lead was always worth having.

At the question, Meryn had to resist rolling her eyes. There was a reason she had the notice with her, after all. It wasn't just so that she could contemplate her next action with the job offer in her hands. Instead, she snapped the notice paper with a flick of her wrist, forcing one of the golden bracelets she'd taken off of some unsuspecting rich lady to jingle. "This one," was her rather mild reply, a hint of tartness in her voice, albeit keyed down so that she wouldn't end up full of sharp, pointy objects for being uppity.

She bit back a sigh and made her way over to the chairs indicated and sat down on the sofa, perching on the edge so that she could move at a moment's notice. Meryn wasn't stupid. She'd seen the notice below that warned people not to waste the respectable's time or get a knife in the face. Somehow she didn't think that being antagonistic would be helpful in this situation, despite her great desire to be difficult.

Ignoring the offer of drink, Meryn accepted the Inquisitor's hand and gave it a quick, firm shake before letting go. This was a business transaction. It was time to be serious. "Meryn. He's near the Island of Daro; there's a hoard near there where he stashes his booty."

She paused for a moment, and couldn't help but let her lips turn upwards into a slight smile even as her eyes took on the glint of mischief that was so characteristic of the young woman. "As for how I know, well..." she shrugged. "If I told you that, my trust would be compromised and I'd never get any information ever again, and then where would I be?"

The handshake was firm and over quickly, which was good, Sophia wasn't one to waste time with frivolities such as that. "Right down to business. I like that" she responded, slipping into a more businesslike style of talking, as oppose to before where she had been slightly absent, and generally looked like she wasn't really concentrating on the here and now.

"The Island of Daro?" she asked aloud "Interesting. That might be a difficult place to assault without being seen early..." she mused "Anyway, that's no concern of yours. For payment we tend to work on ten percent now, with the rest being paid once it turns out your information is correct, and can sort out how you wish to be paid. Is there any further information you have ran into that may be of use? I am willing to reward anything that turns out to be correct. As for your source, if you wish to keep it to yourself that is fine, I was an assassin until recently and know the value of a source"

As she was speaking a blue tear in reality opened behind her, and a bag of coin flew out, landing in Sophia's hand which was then held out to Meryn. The whole process was as quick and painless as possible, to encourage people to share information. If they lied then Sophia was confident on her ability to track down and enact vengeance upon them.

"If not, then I believe the easiest way to sort this out is by myself so I better get on with it." the idea that Meryn might want to come along did not occur to her, after all it was not usual procedure. But, it wasn't as if she would be against the idea of Meryn spending more time around, she was businesslike, and if this information was correct useful. "In which case I should be back and can sort out the rest of your payment in a couple of hours"

At the question of other information she debated telling Sophia about the device, but decided against it. That was strictly guild business, and she doubted the head would appreciate her spreading that information around. However, there was some other information she could give, and so when the reality tore and money was tossed into her hand, Meryn skillfully ignored it and spoke. "Not much else, but he does have several ships with him. Three or four, in fact, but I can't be sure as to the total number."

Her informant had been rather vague on that score, but Meryn figured that any information was better than none. He definitely had more than one ship, at any rate, and that was all that mattered to the thief. Having imparted this information, Meryn finally accepted the sack of coins, and poked her nose into it curiously, wondering as to the exact amount. She didn't count it, but the gleam of golden coin within the leather was enough to set a spark of excitement within her.

Her attention was quickly diverted, however, by the Inquisitor's next words, and Meryn jerked her head upwards to look at her, tousled curls falling into her face. Irritably, she pushed them back (one of these days she would have to invest in some sort of tie to keep the dratted curls away). "I'd like to come with you," she said bluntly. "There's a few things I need to take care of."

If the lady thought she was just going to ditch Meryn here while she went and ruined Pegleg Bill's life, she was sorely mistaken. Meryn's eyes hardened in determination. "I'll take that as payment if necessary."

    High Inquisitor of Ashoka

Sophia had stood up and reached her hand over to her desk, causing the Mistolin, the black blade, to come flying to her landing in her hand perfectly sheath and all before it was swiftly attached to her belt on her left side. She needed no other weapons, not when she had the gate and could call forth a near infinite number of temporary blades in addition to the many she stored in there, an amount which now ran into the hundreds. It was safe to say she did have something of an obsession, although perhaps it was more accurate to say that since she could store as many weapons as she wanted, she tended to store every weapon she came across. It paid to be cautious.

"Three or four ships? That's all? I am disappointed" Sophia tutted "Whilst I admire his skill in making it seem more like he had five or six, I don't think he will give me much of a challenge. She turned back around to face Meryn just in time to see her push some hair out of her face, a gesture which she found...

Her mind focused. And then for a brief moment stopped. "You want to come with me?" she asked, almost as if Meryn had asked Sophia to streak through Eldahar. "You realize I can't just let anyone come along with me based on a whim. This is serious business of state. If I take you along just because you want to go, what next? Before long I will be running a vigilante group as oppose to an Inquisition. If you think I will do what you want just because you ask then I assume you are a very foolish individual". Her tone immediately changed. She had taken something of a liking to this woman off the bat for no real reason, but she wasn't going to let that intrude into her job. "Especially as, for all I know, you are part of some grand plot to lure me, or my people, into a trap. Even if I accepted you had a good reason to come why wouldn't you just slow me down?" she spoke with harshness and just the hint of threat in her voice. Sophia was many things but not one to be taken for a fool. Any favor Meryn had by bringing information had been spent when Sophia did not throw her out the door for merely asking to come with.

"You have given me something useful, but I don't trust you as far as i could throw the palace, and if you want me to do anything other than throw you out you better start explaining fast whats in it for me to bring you with me and why I would. And please don't think the trifle sum you are getting paid is anything compared to the amount I can now requisition". Her eyes narrowed into a dead glare "So I would make this a good answer or take that all back, say thank you and scurry away"

Meryn rose as Sophia spoke. The bag of money lay on the sofa still, not forgotten, but momentarily discarded in favor of preparing an explanation for her desire to go along with the Inquisitor. She wasn't stupid; she hadn't expected to get an immediate 'yes, by all means, we'll go at once' from the lady, but she'd rather hoped that threats wouldn't come into play. "Less of a want, more of a need," she corrected in light tones, keeping all thought of sharp retorts out of her mind. That was the last thing she needed.

Now, how to explain without giving the entire game away? Certainly the Inquisitor wouldn't take anything less than a very good answer, something she made very clear in her last statement. So, in the end, it all came back to verbal play. She was up against a good opponent, that was true, but words were where Meryn excelled, and she was sure that, barring being able to go with, she would at least get out of this confrontation unscathed. Still, best to have an escape route just in case.

"I happen to have some business myself with Pegleg," she started, taking a brief look at her mental map to see if there was a decent escape route. "He's stolen something of value, and I want it. It's really that simple." Contemplation passed across her face. "I can't give you any more details than that, but there's absolutely no scheme involved here. Just a job that needs doing."

Her mouth curled into half of a rueful smile. "As to my slowing you down - well, perhaps, but I'm sure he's got all sorts of useful trinkets. Would you really want all of those lovely things to be lost at the bottom of the sea?"

The words were said, and escape route set in her mind if needed. The game had truly begun now. It was time for Sophia to play.

"Useful trinkets?" Sophia repeated, the one phrase that really stood out to her. If there were valuable things then, well she could take them. She supposed she would have to make a show of giving some to Ashoka for the good of the country or whatever, but mainly her. The more she could put a safety net to protect her either from Orion turning against her or the people managing to mount a large scale rebellion and dispose of the whole system. Every penny she had to insure her from that was welcome. Money was power, or at least part of it, and she needed as much power as she could to be safe. She needed it.

"Why would I need you to confiscate everything of value there? I am quite sure I am capable of taking anything I want myself and not needing to divide it with you. Even if it was lost underwater I can go long enough without needing to breathe I could still recover some of it, I wager" she clicked her tongue, as if to say 'must try harder'.

"As for your personal vendetta, why does that influence me? It makes no difference if he is your best friend or worst enemy to me".

She paused "But, if you really want to come along, how about we strike a deal. First of all, you forfeit all payment from me in return for a share of whatever he has, including that" she pointed at the bag of money she had handed to Meryn earlier "secondly, whilst there you follow every word I say to the letter, and thirdly you will act as an informant for the Inquisition... No, for me. Any information you find out about a small list of subjects you will pass on to me" she maintained her gaze. A way for Ashoka to save money (it wasn't massively needed, but every penny helped) and a way for her to increase her only personal web of information was useful. And in reality, what this woman could do did not really scare her, even if she did side with the pirate it wasn't as if Sophia felt particularly threatened. Also, this offer would be a good way to sound out just how important whatever this thing was to her. If it was really useful, well Sophia could kill her there and say she was a pirate... Although it would be a shame.

When the Inquisitor paused, Meryn held her tongue. There was a time for talking and a time for being silent, and though Meryn generally managed to mistake those times, there was no doubt in her mind that if she spoke now, it would not be regarded favorably. As it turned out, she was right; Sophia started to give her a list of conditions. A deal.

A deal that Meryn had to carefully consider. Could she afford it? Honestly, giving up the money wasn't that big of a deal - a little disappointing, perhaps, but not a big deal - and the obeying was something she could mostly do.... but the other two conditions were the ones that had her hesitating. "As long as I can get the object I need, you can have the entire boat for all I care," Meryn replied, not at all certain she'd said the right thing. Then again, it did need to be said, and if the way she phrased it was wrong, well then, she'd know soon enough, wouldn't she?

As for the spying.... That wouldn't be incredibly difficult, considering her line of work, but it meant several things that Meryn wasn't at all sure she wanted. For one thing, it would mean a permanent tie to this woman. She disliked dealing with respectability at the best of times, and though she did admit that this one was more tolerable than most, it didn't change the fact that the idea of reporting to her was incredibly distasteful. There was also the simple fact that by taking such an agreement it could get her in serious trouble, depending on what the subjects were, and she could also be allying herself with someone here. That probably wasn't the best of plans.

But did she really have a choice?

"I... It would depend on the subjects," Meryn finally said. "As with most people, I do value my life." Meaning that if certain information was going to get her killed, Sophia could forget about her ever going near it. However, if she managed to overhear something on one of those dangerous subjects, then, well, it wouldn't be too difficult for her to relay that information somehow, would it?

With Meryn, it was nearly always the unspoken messages that were more important than the spoken ones. She would actually make quite a good politician.

It was almost as if she could see Meryn thinking her offer over. That meant then she seemed to have stumbled across a good starting point, too quick an agreement would make her think she was getting a raw deal. "That suits me fine. It make dividing everything up easier." or meant that Meryn would point out the one special thing for her. That would be nice as it would save her the trouble of finding it herself, and once she knew what it was she could decided whether to honor their agreement or just take it herself.

"Oh, it won't be any special subject, and if it really would put you in danger, then you don't need to do it. But anything you here on any of the issues I give you, I want to know. And maybe I would handle a more specific mission your way from time to time, if I needed it. Consider yourself as being in reserve, day to day all you will have to do is pay attention if certain things are mentioned" she made sure to make it sound quite light and easy, which it was. Any official subject she could cover with Inquisitional resources, but someone not as confined to Ashoka (well, her Inquisitors weren't, but when found there would be an incident with them) might pick something up, and having someone in your pocket was always handy, if any problem ever arose. Although she was getting along better with Orion now than before, so that avenue at least seemed to be reasonably safe. She still wanted to have some information flow outside of his influence though, and that was what Meryn would be to her, when needed.

"So, do we have a deal?" she asked, eyes watching intently.
