High Inquisitor of Ashoka

It was an insufferably warm day. The Mistress of Blades had dumped most of her usual clothes instead for a loose fitting white shirt and, unusually for her, a long khaki skirt with nothing but a simple pair of sandals. Such a look was most unlike her, but wearing something cool was what took precedence, and it was impractical for her to keep creating a breeze all day just for that. Although she wore no weapons on her, she still had her personal symbol, the spider, sown onto the left breast of her shirt. She tended to always wear that symbol when she was about in Ashoka, as a kind of visual shorthand to represent her power, and to make sure people were used to seeing it. She had made sure it turned up a lot, carved into walls, on paving slabs... All over the place. She was trying to promote the idea that it meant the area was being watched, and so far was meeting some limited success. Admittedly part of the issue is often she wasn't, but still, reality didn't need to be common knowledge. She was stood in the shade only a short distance from the palace, watching the comings and going and generally letting the world pass her by, at least it would appear. In truth she was making sure she was close at hand should something go down between Orion and the Sotoan who was here. She lived in fear that one day Orion would think it fun to murder someone of importance. Whilst Sophia did not make many movements, she was quite noticeable, every so often a guard would come up to her, say a few words and leave, or something else. It was as if the whole ebb and flow of the square was centered on her, like she was the eye of the storm: calm, still and serene whilst everything around her was a constant hive of activity. After some time she pushed herself off from the wall she was leaning on and took a short walk to a small fountain, lent over and splashed the cool water over her face and ran her hand through her hair. "Ms Orjtarn" a soldier came to her side and saluted, continuing only after the High Inquisitor turned to face him "We have another group leaving the Underground Prison, they want to confirm your orders before they leave" A blue rift appeared behind the dark haired woman, and a water flask flew out and into her hand before it closed. After a long sip the reply simply came "Tell them no change, I will fly out and meet them tonight for the rest." she made a hand gesture to shoo the woman away. What a terrible day it must be to be in armour. Still, no matter. She took a gentle stroll in order to take her closer to the entrance to the palace once more. |

When the doors opened for Aniketos, the hot air stormed through like an angry mistress and slapped him in the face. The assault was so physical that he had to step back, squinting in the glaring sun. "By the gods-" One of the guards by the door gave him a look which told him to stay in or get out, just hurry up and decide already, so he stepped out into the sun and frowned across square, concentrating for the moment on directing magical energy into the air to cool it down around him. Curse this weather, he thought, Reine never gets this disgustingly hot. The sun would turn his skin to leather, but there was nothing for it. He couldn't hang around inside the palace forever. Once the air surrounding him was at a comfortable temperature, he tugged his white, gold-embroidered shirt to made sure it covered as much skin as possible and tried to keep his face down, out of the sun. In this awkward, slightly hunched fashion, he walked. It was a surreal experience- the heat rose up from the pavement in waves, and yet he had created a bubble of air around him that was almost like Soto at the beginning of spring. Others around him were streaked with sweat but, aside from the sun, he was almost comfortable. Of course, the sand somehow managed to get into unspeakable places without his permission, and his clothes were forever covered in dust...how he longed for home, his familiar bath and a garden of lush greenery rather than this wasteland. He had only taken a few steps from the door when he noticed someone- a woman, taller than him, dark-haired, dressed in loose clothes. On her chest was embroidered that spider symbol he saw everywhere, and in a flash he realized who it must be. He stopped in front of her, his face splitting into a smile almost as bright as the sun. "Ah, it must be the High Inquisitor!" he said, for one of Orion's attendants had explained what the symbol meant only earlier that day. He hoped that this woman wasn't someone else- which would be uncomfortable- but, based upon Orion's descriptions, he assumed this must be her. It was no wonder why he wished to bed her, Aniketos saw that. They rarely came so strong and tall in Reine, and the fact that she did not giggle in his presence made her seem to be quite the challenge. Orion would kill you, he thought, and suppressed a small laugh- All the more exciting, he told himself. He offered his hand, sticking it out of his little aura of cool air- a strange sensation to say the least. "I have heard quite a bit about you and your work and I must say, I am impressed." |

She had noticed him almost as soon as he left the building, after all part of her purpose here was to make sure Orion didn't do something to cause an incident. Although he generally had shown himself to be quite shrewd, she lived in terror of when he would get an impulse to do something that would cause a major international incident. That was her job. Although she had managed to avoid doing so when she kidnapped and returned a large number of children from the assassin's guild, Deadly Silence. Their secrecy really did work against them. She turned her head towards him as she spoke, and glanced him up and down "Ah!" she replied, mimicking his accent and tone as best she could "It must be the councilman from Auberon’s Destiny, elected at the tender age of 24 after doing almost nothing of note as a general" she spoke calmly and without much in the way of tone or emotion, she simply was communicating a message, a simple one really: that she had been finding out what she could about him, although quite how was left unclear. She had been temped to tell him more about himself, but she trusted what she spoken to be enough, she did not want to push it too far, just a simple reminder than she had been watching him, and that she knew who he was. Did he know who she was, beyond Orion's High Inquisitor? Time would tell. She was very secretive about her past, and often confounded it by outright lieing when asked about it, but still. She tossed her drink back into the blue void, which closed as the flask entered as quickly as it had opened just in time to receive it, and took the offered hand, although she did not bother to move from her position slouching against the wall. "Well, its nice to know my name travels" she commented wryly, her hand falling back to her side. "Although quite what work have you heard about?" she asked, partly to see if anything about her work in Soto, either recently or from years ago had snuck through into council consciousness, it was unlikely though, she recognized her own paranoia. "My skill at being hidden? With a blade? I do many things" her voice still lacked much in the way of tone or emotion. Whether this was because she was uninterested or to show Aniketos that she wasn't impressed or awed by him was unclear. "So, is there any special reason you decided to visit the good king?" she inquired, sarcasm evident in the last words "Curious about his harem, perhaps? Or is this an official visit by a foreign dignitary, in which case you will have to excuse me whilst I fetch a red carpet from somewhere." she smirked a little. "As a military man I suppose you might want a division to line the parade route and salute?". She was being short, and a little rude, she knew. But it was too hot out to put on airs, besides as an ex military man, of sorts, she was sure he would be used to it. |

Her greeting- if it could be called that- took him by surprise momentarily, but he didn't allow himself to show it other than in the slight raise of his eyebrows. So this was why Orion could bed his Inquisitor- her tongue was a whip that would make a lion cower. "The Sotoans wouldn't have it any other way!" he said with a little laugh, pretending to be unaffected slightly unsettling fact that she'd bothered to research him, "Better than General Creon in any case!" Creon had been Aniketos' predecessor, corrupt and infamous for embezzling wherever he could. Pandering only to the short-term desires of the Sotoans with no consideration for the future...Well, that was not how Aniketos was doing things, that was for certain. He watched her strange use of magic with seeming indifference, considering the fact that information about his rise into politics could be found out from any one who knew even a little about the state of the Sotoan government. The Inquisitor wouldn't have to dig deep to find out such things. Well, he knew a bit about her as well, just gossip from a few years back...he'd attempted to find out a bit more about the Ashokan government before coming here, and on the way, although that had proved easier said than done. But this would have to do all the same. And so he leaned forward a little, his eyes lit up like embers by the glaring desert sun. "Yes, your name does travel, but not so much since you left Morrim. Strange that you should go from leading rebellions to crushing them." He then stood straight again, the polite smile returning. "I only come for an informal visit- I believe Orion and I get along quite well, I think. He has mentioned you, thus why I am interested to make your acquaintance." He stood contrapposto, his hip jutting out slightly, his head tilted to the side to accentuate the curve of his neck. Blast this sun he thought, hoping he wouldn't have to be out here for long. He resisted the urge to grimace and only smiled and looked pretty, as he was wont to do. |

"Is being better than your forerunner your only claim to success?" the assassin asked with eyebrow raised, her face turning away from Aniketos slightly to continue surveying the square. Sure, she partly might have been here to make sure that nothing bad happened to him in the palace, but she wasn't going to let him know she cared at all. Especially because, as soon as he had got away from the palace a little, she wouldn't. She did pause when he mentioned rebellions. Did he know that she had led the Morrim revolution? How? She had been so careful about making sure that nobody found out she was really Anna... It must be something else, surely... Her face turned back to him. "Oh?" she asked "What has Orion said about me? Or do I not want to know? Me and him have very different outlooks on life, and are very different people altogether" she spoke truthfully. Sometimes she wondered how they managed to work together. She guessed it was his wanting someone of her caliber to do a lot of the work. And in turn she wanted someone she could scapegoat if anything went wrong, someone to distract attention away from her whilst she was trying to increase her power around the world, someone who could give her access to resources she could otherwise only dream of. Access to things money couldn't buy. "You realize that I am Sotoan?" she asked, although it was... Well, it was not entirely true, although she had the paperwork to prove she was born there. Or in Ashoka. Or Morrim. But she grew up in Soto, the things that shaped who she was all happened there. "A guild woman, through and though, for a while anyway". She was curious as to what his reaction would be, if any. She did not typically look Sotoan, although her accent did have a slight inflection that suggested that, although you could equally conclude she was Angkarian if you were to decide based on audible evidence alone. "Was never part of your guild though. Frankly I think the way of soldiers is so often dull and uninspired. You guys just break everything. Not that sometimes that kind of thing isn't needed." she deftly turned herself onto a subtle questioning on military strategy. He was the councilman who was a soldier, and a likely opponent in any war. It was good to know who you may face. Of course, it would be better if he and Orion became best friends so there would never be a war. She couldn't rely on her hidden partial control of Deadly Silence alone to stop any hostility if it occurred. |

(Oh wow I forgot she was in disguise for that I'm so sorry. I read it and then failed to remember. xD -feels terrible- Uhm...well. -asspull- Also I'm sorry if it's not terribly coherent, this took me like over an hour simply because I was getting distracted by EVERYTHING. Like the impulse to dance. And grapefruits.) "Oh, no. But it's what every good politician tries to do, isn't it?" Perhaps not including you, he thought, and he resisted the urge to glare at her. She clearly found herself superior to him and yet he wondered if she had any really noble aspirations for her political position. "Perhaps you'd prefer not to hear what the Moghul has said...he is Orion after all." Another little laugh, all though his resentment grew as he found out her origin. "Perhaps the Morrimian thing was only a rumour after all," he said, with an airy shrug, "Something I'd heard from an old man who claimed to know things." Though the man had some good arguments, though he'd seemed to have struck a nerve with the comment, he didn't really care any more. This woman had abandoned her Sotoan origins- people like that bothered him. Aniketos was of course, prone to all sorts of indulgence and sin but he was loyal, forever devoted to his homeland. "Though you hardly seem Sotoan. True followers of guilds do not renounce their loyalty to their homeland, and their people." He seemed blithe enough, taking on the tone of merely making a comment on the situation, though inside he could feel a sort of disgust coiling up in him like a snake. To make matters worse, he realized he'd have to relinquish his air-cooling spell soon, just for a while, and the sun was getting on his nerves. But he must be polite, the same Aniketos as ever, seemingly unaffected by the environment and by any insult or comment thrown his way. "Yes, well, some would say that," he answered ambiguously, pulling his smile back up to standard. He was truthfully a bit distracted, wondering how the weather in Reine was today- no doubt better than this, even if it was raining fireballs and locusts. |

(Don't sweat about it) "If you say so. I am not a politician" Sophia shrugged "I am given my tasks and I complete them in the most efficient way possible, beyond that I am free to do what I like. To say I influence policy is grossly inaccurate. I just make it so." She laughed when he talked about hearing a rumor, her mind dashing to plans and conclusion, and then ignoring them all to fly on whatever felt right "People say a lot of things about me, depending on where you look. You could probably find people claiming I have done all sorts of things I could only dream of. I... Do not suit a leadership position, I know that and have no delusions otherwise. I am a follower" She seemed to grow a little angrier when he suggested she had voluntarily left Soto, however, her eyes narrowed to a glare "You think I renounced my loyalty?" she demanded "That it was my choice?" she snarled a little "Fine, believe what you want." she waved her hand dismissively "Soto spat me out, I don't need to dance around it. I am here now, I need to make the best of where I am. And that includes trying to get along with all sorts of people, and ignoring anything that looks like a lecherous advance from my boss. We are bear our troubles." "I am going to head somewhere a little cooler, if you want you can come with" she stood up and took a few steps "You'd think I would get used to desert heat, but I never do." she added, not speaking to Aniketos so much as she was musing aloud. "I'll let you make the choice if we turn the topic of conversation to more important topics of state, or if you just want to get to know each other. After all, as I said people say a lot of things about me, and a lot of them aren't true. The bit about me going to a bath house in Madrid every day, that's true" |

The anger in him softened- why had she been forced to leave? She wasn't happy about it, he wondered if she had done anything wrong or if she'd been convicted of something wrongfully. He let the smile fall away and said softly, "Ah, I'm sorry." Normally, he would have reached out, taken her hand or touched her shoulder but with this woman, who was rather like a hissing snake, and on a such a hot day, he decided against it. "I'm afraid I misunderstood." Perhaps kindness would soften this woman more than mildly threatening conversation and witty comebacks. And if then that didn't work, maybe nothing would, except maybe a meat tenderizer. He suppressed a giggle at the rather nonsensical thought and followed her. "Anything to get out of this heat," he said, and it was at that moment that he was forced to let his spell go. The cool air around him swiftly dissipated, the heat closing in like a great sweaty fist. He frowned as he tried to breathe, and felt like his airways were on fire. "I am rather tired of politics, to be truthful. Enough of the oh so 'important' conversation about tariffs and the like." He let out a little laugh. "I'm afraid that my image is mostly rumours as well. Aniketos who defiled the statues of the sun god, Aniketos who cut off his dog's tail, Aniketos who snubbed so-and-so. The things people come up with." He paused for a moment and then asked, rather hesitantly, led on by curiousity, "Why did you go every day?" Edited by Aniketos, Oct 2 2011, 08:48 AM.

Her eyes darted back swiftly as he apologized. Did it matter to her? Not really. Was it nice that he at least tried to make an effort? She supposed so. At least he was prepared to honestly admit he may have been wrong, unlike people who either became fully convinced and majorly apologetic on but a couple of words (which came across very insincere) or were actually just plain insincere. She honestly was not entirely sure what to make of this man. She did find herself slightly more curious now than she had been when first she saw him a minute ago, however. "You jumped to a conclusion. Everyone does." her response to his apology was quick and blunt. She had no desire to relive her days at the guild, and even moreso those which caused her to leave. And even thinking about the days leading up to going there was out of the question. In some ways she technically had left Soto behind her, after all she was chased out for killing a senior guild member and leaving his head as a rather gruesome display on a spike, and it was something only more gruesome when the finders realized quite what she had cut off and stuffed into his mouth. But, she felt she was in the right to do so. At that point her greatest flaw was that she did not look to what the consequences of her actions would be. That man had been her second kill, but the first since she had become a trained and dangerous killer. Her first... She had been but a little girl, not understanding what it was people were doing to her until it just... Happened, and she was left wandering the streets of Madrid naked with a bloody knife, scared out of her mind. Did she abandon Soto? Maybe. If she was honest she could not say she didn't at all. But was she pushed to? That was the real question. Still, she didn't really care. Despite the paperwork she had made up for her on that day of her first kill, she was not a Sotoan by birth. And Madrid held a lot of bad memories for her. She had never fitted in at the guild, at all, although she partly brought that on herself. Noticing he dropped that little aura of coolness around him was simple. She was an assassin, used to spotting tells much smaller than that. With a smirk he would not be able to see as she continued walking away towards her office she summoned a light breeze to cool them both off. He owed her, not that she would admit to doing anything. "Good. Politics are not my favored topic either." she admitted "Believe it or not, I am not exactly educated. And as it has been shown to me I often end up with gaps in my arguments where I cannot just argue against things." her voice broke into a light laugh at the end as he mentioned his supposed deeds. "Defied the gods, eh?" she asked, evidently liking the sound of it "I think I could say I do the same, although in a very different way" her voice darkened a little. She may have come to term with that, but she still thought of it as being fundamentally wrong. Some lessons you were forced to learn stuck with you. "Still, me and Soto, why do I go everyday? Surely you have seen what the heat is like here, and the desert dust also, surely you have noticed it gets everywhere?" she glanced to the light sand at her feat "I think bathing everyday is necessary. With how hard I train I usually end up sweating like a pig, too" she added. The daily training she put herself through to try and improve her martial skills was nothing if not overly harsh, and only increased as she rapidly continued to gain power. Even as she was starting to hit the upper limit of what her body was capable of, she did not slow down, quite the opposite she increased her effort. "Beyond that, I just plain like to bathe, is that so wrong?" she didn't answer quite how she was able to go so far and back every day without significantly affecting her schedule. To her the fact she could fly to Madrid quicker than most could walk out of this city was a mundane thing. "Either that, or maybe I just like to stay pretty" she added, her voice losing some of its tone once more "What do you think?". |

The soft breeze was a bit of relief, though Aniketos lent no thought as to where it might come from. He was busy considering the fact that she seemed to approve of his supposed sacrilege, though he had not actually done that to the statues, someone else had, wasn't his fault. But she had at least refrained from insults, which was good, so he decided against saying anything. He nearly asked her why she didn't just go to the bathhouse in Eldahar- and then realized that she didn't seem the type to put up with the lack of segregation there. "I wish I could simply stop by in Reine every day," he confessed, with a smile, "There are those out there who say that frequent bathing is a detriment to one's health, but I fail to see the reasoning behind staying covered in dirt and sweat." He paused and drew in a breath of the hot air, "Especially in this climate." He spoke without much thought, distracted by thoughts of home once again. The differences between Ashoka and Soto were so glaringly obvious at the moment that he almost asked if she would take him with her next time she went to Madrid...such nonsense. He held back a sigh, and tried to turn his mind back to small talk. "Do you come from Madrid then, as you visit it so often?" A bit pathetic really, but he simply didn't feel like himself here. Gods, I could do with a drink. |

"It takes me about the same amount to time to get to Madrid as it would take me to walk across town to the bath house here, so it really is no competition. Besides, because I am a much less public figure in Soto in grants me an anonymity which I am denied here" she explained as they got to a building. With a wave of her hand the door could be heard to click itself unlocked, and then opened as a result of telekinetic manipulation on the High Inquisitor's part. "Partly though, I just like spending time in Soto. As I said, I grew up there, and I do have some pleasant memories" precious few, but some. Most of her life was trapped within that one guild owned complex, wit no family she had nowhere else to go, and she did not feel safe walking around the city on her own at first. And by the time she was old enough... Well, circumstances had changed, and she didn't want to do anything than sit in her hiding place in the loft. But, over the many years she was there she did make a few ventures into Madrid. "But no, I am not a native of Madrid, I just..." she paused, not really wanting to talk about the details of her past, but not wanting to make things weird by purposely stopping any inquiry "Ended up there" she settled on. It was true, she happened to be near Madrid that night, seeing as that was were the transaction was to take place, and so when she ended up like she had been... She supposed in some ways she was lucky. But then again, how long would they have jailed a child that young for, and if the circumstances came to light, would they of at all? "How about you?" she asked, although she knew the truth "From Madrid, or has Reine always been home?". She continued walking, going up some stairs and then repeating her trick on another door, which led into what had become her office. It wasn't much, a desk with a couple of chairs in one corner, a cabinet with a heavy duty padlock, a small table with a collection of swords and daggers on, a couple of books she was trying to use to teach herself to read properly and an empty wine glass and finally by the window a small sofa and an armchair, with another small table which held a lamp. Other odds and ends were lying about, a map of the city with pins in it at various points, a damaged looking training dummy and a couple of sets of clothes which were scatted on the floor in one corner. It was evidently a well used room, although only the area by the window looked fir for guests. "Take a seat" she gestured to the seats at the window "Can I get you anything?" it was unclear where she would get anything asked for from, although memory might reveal the blue portal she used earlier as holding at least a flask of water. "Actually, if you don't mind I might give us a bit more of a breeze" she added, and the elements complied, the wind flowing in through the window, out the half open door and away. |

Once inside, Aniketos drew in a deep, pleasurable breath, sucking in this air while, not perfect, was at least cooler. He could still feel the sunlight on his skin, even in the shadows. It felt like warm wax on his skin, this residual heat. "I see," he said, but decided it would be best to avoid further inquiry into her past. He fancied he could feel her becoming brittle again, flinging up walls to keep him out. "I am a native of Reine," he said, as he always did, "Born and raised." He put his hand over his heart, partially because it was a motion used by many Sotoans to show their respect for the gods when bringing them up in conversation, partially because he felt could feel it twinge out of longing for the place. Not even affection for another human could do this to him- he allowed no such weakness. "My family is native to Reine, has been for many generations," he said after the pain faded, his voice blooming with pride. They were soon in what must be the Inquisitor's office. He looked around the room critically- it was a bit messy, and he observed with a certain smugness that his was much nicer, though he wasn't one to point out such things. He sat on the sofa, assuming that Sophia might prefer the armchair, and found himself sinking in gratefully. He tried for a moment to retain some sort of decorum but the breeze that came flowing over him was too much. He slouched with a sigh and a smile, his muscles relaxing. After a moment he looked up, asking, "Ah...you wouldn't happen to have any specifically Ashokan drinks? Perhaps of a stronger nature." He refused to say outright that he wanted alcohol, that seemed indelicate. "People assume that since I'm a stranger to the land, I am afraid to try anything new, when in fact, the situation is quite the opposite." |

"I am quite fond of Reine myself" Sophia volunteered, although she neglected to add that it was because, as a general rule, Reine was much less involved in the guild system than Madrid was. One of her greatest secrets was the small art gallery in Reine that she had bought some time ago now, originally to help her launder money from the Morrim revolution, but now used to get anything out of Ashoka she wanted and generally to act as a hidden safe house for her. And, it gave her an opportunity to examine fine art whenever she wished, which was certainly a plus. "It must be nice to have a family history. I know I do to, but I don't know it. My parents died when I was very young, and frankly its not important enough for me to look into, I doubt it would interest me at all. I guess my brother might care" she shrugged "who knows?" it felt weird to mention Mjor. They still had not properly met, although she had spied on him, and had considered talking to him, but it would was not something she had done. There were good reasons to, she wanted to get on with him or ignore him, and she was certain he would possibly even try and attack her on sight once he saw her, before he realized who she was. Still, she was glad she did ultimately still have family, and that her bloodline wouldn't die with her, because there was no way she was going to have a brat. As for Ashokan drinks, and something strong... Well, Sophia did have a couple of ideas. With a wave of the hand the lock fell of the cabinet and she walked over to it, grabbing a few shot glasses and two bottles, which she placed on the small table and then set herself down in the armchair. She took the first bottle and poured them each a shot. "This is Mezcal, it is a very acquired taste but lets see what your think" she picked up her glass and slowly drank the liquid, the taste was something that was growing on her, but still was a little strange for her palette. She finished and placed the empty glass on the table "I also have Tequilla, and do have some Ashokan wine's if that interests you" she added. "Anyway, what prompted you to become a councilor then, may I ask? It is not the most typical path to take for a Reine native, and certainly isn't the kind of thing everyone would go for anyway. And I imagine rising in a military guild in a country that has been at peace must be quite an effort." she relaxed back in the chair, making herself comfortable and crossing one leg over the other, and then adjusting her skirt slightly. "Although I suppose there are always ways to rise for the truly ambitious. For those with enough desire to rise lack of opportunity is but a minor problem. Opportunity can always be created, and with cunning it can work for you even it fails" she spoke as if she was idly letting her thoughts wander, but in truth that was much of the story of her rise to High Inquisitor. She started a revolution with the intent of putting herself in charge of Morrim, albeit in disguise as Anna Vollney, or else if it looked like the revolution would fail going around various parties as Sophia and seeing what she could get in return for killing Anna. It was very useful to have multiple identities at times, even though in that case it almost ripped her apart. But now the side of her that was Anna dwelt safely within the pitch black blade of her personal sword, Mistolin, which lay in the corner, a blade which looked simple and unassuming in every way but its perfect blackness and the slight green aura around it if you concentrated. |

"Yes, I suppose so," he said, his face revealing nothing. Of course, having next to no family would be lonely, though in the end he had only really had a fraction of a family himself- his father had always been absent and his mother had failed to bring any siblings into the world. So he didn't exactly know what it was to have a complete family, but it wasn't something he discussed with anyone. At least he had stories of his ancestors to entertain him, myths of which gods he was related to, which made his claim to power more valid in the eyes of some. And eventually he'd have to conceive a legitimate child to pass on the traces of ichor that ran in his blood. When Sophia's back was turned, he winced, thinking, Gods, I need that drink. Family life is not something to consider now. When she turned back to face him, he smiled, and took the shot glass. "Finally, I've heard a fair bit about this...Mezcal. But I couldn't find anywhere to acquire it." He tipped the liquid back into his mouth and godsdamn did it burn, no wonder it was an acquired taste. It was good. He swallowed, making a face, and grinned. "Now that is a good drink." He swirled the remaining Mezcal in the glass, letting the burn of alcohol fade away. "I've had a fair bit of the wine, and in honesty, I found it sour in comparison to that produced in Reine." He shrugged and looked at her with his head ever so slightly tilted, his face bright with interest. "Cunning and opportunity are quite important, yes. Getting people to accept a native of Reine into a Council based in Madrid...well. Let's say bribery and scheming were necessary. But they elected a necromancer, so they learned to accept me. Of course, the first step was easy. I was practically born into the position of general, as that was my father's occupation. Kyrillos Hesperes, perhaps you've heard of him. He was largely viewed as a good, honest man, in comparison to those who were corrupted by their power. There were no wars for him to win, but he wound up settling several guild disputes without unnecessary violence." He drained his shot glass and placed it back on the table, wincing in a combination of pleasure and pain at the taste and the burn. It was obviously quite a strong drink- it was beginning to tickle the back of his brain already, and he was quite resistant to the effects of alcohol. "The military is quite dull in times of peace, yes. Well, it is if one has a desire for glorious battles. Otherwise it's just backstabbing and scheming." He paused, wondering if he should go on, viewing Sophia critically. Talking about his ambitions and his love for Soto with a random traveler was one thing. But the High Inquisitor of Ashoka? She was an interesting person but it didn't seem wise to trust her- she was almost certainly smart enough to be able to pull out the meanings behind his words and actions, even if he wasn't talking directly about sensitive information. He cleared his throat, saying, "But then again, so is politics, which turns about to be more about who gets killed and who sleeps with who these days." He frowned, as if he smelled something distasteful, and said simply, "Well...In short, I thought I could benefit my country better as a politician. So far I think it's working." His charming smile returned, for he realized he'd been frowning for much longer than he usually did. Must keep up appearances, Aniketos is not one to brood. |

The High Inquisitor raised her glass and drank, the liquid like fire. It was an acquired taste, and she was only part way to having acquired it. "It is not an easy one to find, I admit. I usually have some from my dealings with the tribes people, they tend to make it. Of course, that means every bottle I get is pretty different" she shrugged and finished, slamming the now empty glass back onto the table "Each tribe does things a little different. Still, I don't know it well enough to really tell the difference, they just told me I should so" she shrugged "It's an easy lie to keep them happy" "I know who your father was yes. I was quite surprised when I found out. He had some friends in the Assassin's guild. We turned down a contract on him at one point. she tilted her head "I am still not sure why, but then again, Deadly Silence was and is pretty ingrained in Soto, I doubt they would want to rock the boat" she thought it was the same person, anyhow. And if she was wrong, well she would have given Aniketos something to think about it. Whether she was right or wrong there would not be any negative come back for her. "But the military being full of backstabbers... The same as everywhere else." she spoke with a slight bitterness. Although quite why seeing as backstabbing was practically her hobby was a mystery. "You should try Ashokan politics" she chuckled "it is all about who kills who and who sleeps with who still, but the answer is either I killed someone or Orion slept with a whore. We streamlined the whole process" she waved her hand and reached for the bottle "Another? Or would you like some Tequila?" She gestured to the cupboard, which opened once more of its own accord as a result of a slight amount of telekinetic force. "So, I have to ask, what do you as a Sotoan think of Ashoka now? What are your thoughts on how the Inquisition operates?" she expected condemnation of the Inquisition. Dragging people away in the middle of the night and so far a confession rate of one hundred percent, which didn't speak of their detective work. They were hidden, and she had done well at making it feel as if an inquisitor was on every corner. But... Maybe Aniketos wasn't as self righteous as many others. Who knew? |

"Yes, well, I didn't say he always say he always settled the disputes without violence." He'd heard about these dealings- after his father had died he'd spent a few years trying to find out as much as possible about this man, and while some things had remained mysterious, this hadn't been difficult- he too had friends in the Assassin's Guild. Knowing all this made him feel even more distanced from his father- his actions still gave him no insight into who he actually was. He was still like statue, cold and distant. With a small jolt, Aniketos realized he was brooding again. He sat up straighter and made sure to laugh at Sophia's joke, a flash of teeth and a polite request for the Tequila please, explaining "I thrive off variety." He pushed his glass across the table for her, and sat with his elbows on his knees, a polite little smile painted onto his face. "Oh, Ashoka is certainly a new experience for me. It's hot and rather harsh, unforgiving, but the landscapes are certainly impressive. And this city, like a gem in the desert. It's quite lovely, despite the climate." Her question about the Inquisition...well. He couldn't tell her that he didn't support the repression of the people, that he didn't approve of the way they killed innocents and people who had simply spoken a word or two out of line. These things had to be hidden if he were to curry favour with Orion- who knew if Sophia would pass what he said onto him. He spoke brightly, leaning comfortably back into the couch, smiling widely and looking Sophia in the eye. "You've done a wonderful job. It's difficult to keep a country under control- the gods know that we have so much trouble with the guilds in Soto. From what I've seen, this is rather a historical accomplishment- such an organization is unprecedented, I believe." That much was the truth, just said in a positive tone of voice, especially since he hated the violence in the guilds. If only there were a way to stop it. He could sense that she wouldn't take well to sycophantic behaviour and so he let it rest. |

"I didn't say he did" Sophia held her hands out apologetically, all her tone spoke more of a lack of interest "All I know is that once when a contract was mentioned it was denied. Everything else is conjecture on my part. I was only... Twelve?" she tilted her head "Maybe a bit older, when that happened. Who knows what happened after or about it, I just happened to overhear that discussion when..." she broke off immediately, not wanting to be drawn into mentioning anything that happened at the guild, and even worse what happened to lead her there. However, with a request for Tequila that discussion seemed to be over. Which was good, she had made a comment about some minor detail she heard once and it seemed to have led both of them to thoughts they did not want to share. She choose to walk over to the cupboard this time, taking the mezcal with her and switching it for another bottle, walking back to the table but remaining standing, for now. "From what I know the two options are in a cocktail or with salt and lemon" she explained "I can sort out either, although don't expect anything fancy" she warned. It was nice at least to meet someone with a similar interest as her in regards to alcohol. Maybe she would get on well with Aniketos after all, she originally had been resigned to tolerate more than anything, being talkative as she was more out of good manners and wanting to make an impression with an important man. She was quite happy about what he said next. The things about Ashoka were neither here nor there, she held no special attachment to the sandbowl, but rather about what she had done. He looked her in the eye as he spoke and she soon found herself needing to look away and fetch a couple more glasses. A historical accomplishment. Her eyes broke from their usual emptiness to, for a moment, smile as a grin crept to her face. Some compliments she hated. But ones about how she had done something well, she liked, she liked that people noticed she worked hard, and when they said so because they knew, not because they thought she would like it. She composed herself in a couple of seconds. "Thankyou" was her response. "It's nice that someone notices what I do." she seemed unaware that some of it might be considered... Cruel. "I have spent almost all of my life hiding. It would be nice to be appreciated" she sighed slightly and slumped back into the seat. |

She had been involved in the guild at...twelve? Aniketos paused and blinked at this, perplexed. Guilds didn't normally accept members in full until they were adults, how had she managed to bear witness to these details at such a young age? Very strange- he reminded himself to look into this later if possible. At her question, he waved his hand, saying, "It doesn't really matter, whatever works best for you." He was mostly eager to get to the alcohol, to dull the unwelcome thoughts that kept creeping into his head, prodding painfully at his mind. Well, she had smiled, that was good. It seemed a meat tenderizer wasn't necessary- most preferable. He hadn't even expected to wring a smile out of her, though it seemed he had now discovered a way into her favour. "It always seems that the people most deserving of recognition are overlooked," he said, watching her face for a reaction. He understood her- that desire for attention was forever gnawing at him. He didn't want to be just another Councillor, a politician, he wanted to be remembered. He wanted to be known for great things, his being still shining like a flame many generations after his death. Death...the threat of it chilled him, made his heart jump and ached as if to prove that it still lived. No, don't think about. Better to engage in conversation, to ask her something, though he worried that asking the wrong question would have him shut out again. He considered it for a moment, and then said, "What in is worth seeing in Eldahar? Other than the Bathhouse- that seemed to be what His Majesty was most interested in showing me." There. Impersonal and beneficial to him, it would have to do to keep his mind off darker subjects. Edited by Aniketos, Oct 17 2011, 05:54 AM.

Sophia poured two shorts of Tequilla, and swiftly produced salt and a lemon from the cupboard also. Admittedly part of the reason a cabinet that looked like it housed official documents of state was used for drinks and such was to be a wonderful decoy. She still would hunt down anyone who stole from it and peel off their fingernails and hammer them into their foreheads, however. Even if they took nothing, on principle if nothing else. She threw the Lemon in the air and with a slight twitch of her arm it fell into four before she had even visibly drew a knife which she placed back away. That was just showing off, it was true. This was the man in charge of Soto's army, sort of, the more inflated his view of her power was, the better. If she had it her way he would believe she was capable of taking every soldier in Soto on at once. Although she doubted anyone would ever believe that, she doubted it was physically possible for anyone to be even a one percent that good. Still, she placed all that was needed on the table by the Councillor and retook her seat. "What's worth seeing in Eldahar?" she repeated after it was asked "Your speaking to the wrong woman, I fear. I don't tend to go out and take part in revelry, and when I do something I tend to not do it in Ashoka. I fear the type of enjoyment Orion likes" whores, mainly she thought, dirty, disease ridden whores. Associating with Orion was part of the reason she made sure to go to Soto to bathe every day, for fear she would catch something by association. "Is not exactly something I would be so fond of" she chuckled "Why, what you say are the main attractions in Reine? What exactly makes it the superior cousin of Madrid if your willing to indulge me". |

Aniketos raised his eyebrows to see Sophia toss the lemon into the air and then slice it without seeming to move. Impressive, he thought, and for a moment he was envious of her skills. But actual combat had never been his forté. No, he was much better behind the scenes, organizing tactics and manipulating people, using his tongue to alter the balance of things...in more ways than one. A slight smirk appeared on his face at the thought, though he quickly replaced the smug little smile with a more placid expression. He took the drink, played with the lemon a bit while she talked, and then placed it on the rim of the glass. The mention of Orion's preferred activities made him laugh a little- he could guess what she was hinting at. And then, of course, she bounced the question right back at him...Soto. He took a sip of the Tequila, finding it smoother than the Mezcal, the flavour greatly enhanced by the salt and lemon. He could feel the alcohol in his body inciting further tingling in his brain. Things had started to hurt less, this was good. He could stop brooding. Talk normally. "Well, I've always found that Reine isn't superior in the area of specific landmarks. I mean, there's a few statues and fountains here and there, in the good parts of town. Some nice buildings. If I may be vain for a moment, I'd say my own abode is one of those remarkable constructions- for I have an exotic garden which is quite the sight in summer. But Madrid will always trump Reine in the area of landmarks and buildings." He took another sip of his Tequila here, knowing he was about to get to the part that he missed most. "No, to enjoy Reine is to explore it. I have grown up there and I am always discovering new things- alleyways and shortcuts, quaint beauty in small things. Like ivy growing over walls. Or dusty windows. Historic buildings. The kinds of things that are beautiful in ways that I cannot put into words." He paused for a moment, swirling the Tequila around absentmindedly, and then went on. "And then the weather- the seasons aren't so harsh by the sea, I've noticed. Summers are humid but scenic, winters are mild. There is simply something about the way the light falls on the streets at each point in the day, or the way the flowers bloom in spring, or the smell of the sea that is...entrancing. I don't know how to explain fully. It is the kind of thing that you must live to understand." He found that he was staring into space, and he quickly brought himself back to earth, bringing Sophia's face into focus. "Madrid simply does not compare in these respects, I think. I often feel that Reine even has better people, as dirty and common as they can be. Despite the piracy and the insolence present in the general rabble, I find them to be...preferable." He was worried that he'd insult Sophia somehow, if he outright criticized Madrid, although her loyalties were a confusing mystery to him. Better safe than sorry, he thought, and he finished off his drink. "I'm sorry if I rambled," he said, adopting a sheepish demeanor. "I'm not much of a poet, I must confess, I'm afraid that I'm prone to long-windedness when trying to explain these things." He placed the glass back on the table and thought for a moment. "I suppose it sounds like I find many faults in Reine, but I tend to view those faults as part of her perfection. Does this make sense to you?" |

Much like the man sitting across from her Sophia drank slowly, savoring the drink as oppose to rushing it. She probably would not have another after this, she had plenty to do today. She had heard of a fresh book on Occult rituals was free and she much desired to read it. And that, for her, would sadly take a lot, lot longer than it needed. Still, perhaps in the rituals needed to summon and bind demons she would learn something useful. "A garden?" she asked when it was mentioned "I might have to come and see that, if you don't mind. I am currently having a manor built myself, perhaps if your house is such a marvel I might be able to take some tips from it" she needed somewhere to live away from all the chaos and hustle of the cities. And she wanted it to be a place of beauty, not functionality, she was growing in power at great speed now she had access to the resources of all of Ashoka, and parts of Soto in addition to the fact she was sure that, if she wanted to, she could call in some favors from Hemlock. She reckoned with four, maybe five times her current power and influence she might, might be comfortable, she might feel safe. She didn't know how wrong she was. However, with that she reckoned making it defensible need not be a primary concern. Instead, she was going to make something to be proud of, a work of art in the middle of nowhere which could grow to a great size. She nodded as he spoke of Reine "I agree. I much prefer Reine as a place to be. The winds are good there. Although, you do realize if it ever came to war I would make a beeline right there?" her voice gaze a very different impression to her words. She sounded friendlier than she had at any point, and yet the smile on her face was chilling in every sense of the word. She let a pause ring out and broke into a small laugh "Perfection is imperfect, yes. I think I could raise a drink to that" she raised her glass as the violent glint that had appeared with the smile faded completely away. |

"You're welcome to visit whenever you please then. In fact, I was planning a bit of party in a few weeks' time, though I haven't planned the details yet." He put on a warm smile, which froze on his face at her next comment. Invade Reine? he thought, Is this something Orion has up his sleeve? His mind was filled with a bright flash of anger, and he was tempted to attack her or yell or something, he couldn't really think what, but a rational section of his mind recognized that it would be a bad idea- though he was not so concerned about his safety as he was for that of Soto. He showed little outward expression of this, save for a brief flash of fury that charged like electricity through those golden eyes. The next moment he was calm, nonchalantly saying, "I'll take that as a compliment." He sank back into the sofa, apparently relaxing, though his mind was unsettled, a whirlwind of thoughts. This only heightened the need for friendly relations with Ashoka in his mind. Though he was afraid that it would come to war some day- they were the two most powerful states on the continent, constantly rubbing shoulders. Such things generated intolerable amounts of friction in time. He smiled at the toast, having no drink to return it with, and no desire to do so anyway. He wanted to leave. Get away from this woman. But it was necessary to find out more, if he could, more so than it was before. He paused for a moment, and then said, "I suppose we'll have to hope it doesn't come to conflict." |

A party? That didn't sound like her kind of thing. She chose to politely nod as oppose to outright saying that she doubted she would go. Although that depend on quite what it was going to be like. And free wine, that might be enough to swing it for her... She supposed there would be. She would leave it until the time, after all it might be a chance to see some people she really should be aware of. After all, she may end up needing to kill them, and that was a lot easier when you what they looked like already. And free wine, that would be awesome. "Oh, no soldier wants conflict" she commented, although neglected to add she wasn't, technically, a soldier "But I imagine Soto has plans ready in case it ended up at war with a whole variety of people? I certainly do for Ashoka, its just good planning. Its a good defense, nobody is going to attack someone who has detailed plans ready for when they do. Ironically it is quite an effective way to ensure peace, I find." she smiled as she explained what she had said, although in reality she had relished that look he had given her. No doubt Orion would have been very angry if he found out what she had said. "Now you know I am ready for any Sotoan attack, aren't you much less likely to agree to any kind of warfare?" she asked, looking at him over the rim of her glass. "War isn't really my thing though" she admitted "Hell, there is a reason I am a High Inquisitor and not a general. I do much better operating in the shadows. And, if I say so myself, I can torture almost anything out of almost anyone. I have this wonderful drug which leaves you unable to move, but fully aware of everything... It is handy, although I think by far its more fun when you force people to do something to themselves. Don't you think?" she was, again, curious for a reaction, to see what this man was like. |

Sophia's words did little to relax him. He was as protective of Reine as a mother dragon over her brood, and the very thought of enemies marching into his home set his mind aflame. He managed an appearance of indifference quite well, though his eyes still retained that wild look. "I'm certain such plans exist but it's not my place to decide on them." He met her gaze with his ember-like eyes, his face defiantly unsmiling. His stare was something of a burning brand, in contrast to her cold gaze, and it said clearly that no, if it came down to it, he would not hesitate, even as he spoke in a pleasant voice: "I'm afraid it's not my place to cause or deter a war either, as much as I'd like it to be." That familiar frustration flashed through him briefly- he wished he had more power, more recognition so he could make the Sotoans realize their potential, bring them to greatness. But he reminded himself of the need of patience, reciting that saying in his mind- Plan through the winter and you shall have a bountiful spring. Relative calm returned as she went on. At least it wasn't Reine she was threatening now. Though he wondered what it was with the Ashokans- they certainly had a thing for torture. "You certainly have a creative flair when it comes to torture," he said lightly, "Something which I'm lacking in, not that I need it. Politics is about verbal rather than physical torture." He brought back his smile, though now it had a sardonic edge to it, a look that spoke of some non-specific threat. |

She listened to him calmly, still difficult to read. She let him speak his piece before finally placing the empty glass down on the table. "Tell me, Aniketos" she began, looking him directly in the eyes "Do I disturb you?" she smiled slightly "Talk of wars and plans of wars and an odd fixation with torture" she flashed her teeth briefly. "If so, it is because I am not a politician. I can be nice, when it suits me. But when it doesn't" she trailed off, and broke eye contact. "Well, most people tend not to like me much" she added, with a slight hint to her voice which said that maybe, just maybe, that upset her at times. "Anyway. Let hope that we can be on good terms" she said, loosing the slightly darker edge her voice had taken on "I don't think it is in either of our interests yet for Soto and Ashoka to not get on. And you seem much more willing to try and repair the gap that exists than many of your fellow council members." she stood up. "But now, I have things I need to be getting on with. It has been good to meet you, Aniketos" she used his name to try and imply familiarity, but wasn't sure if it worked or backfired. She offered her hand. "And if you ever want someone killed, let me know" she added with a smile which made it seem as if she were joking. |
