SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

Elenlond is an original free-form medieval fantasy RPG set on the continent of Soare and the Scattered Isles, which are located to the south in the Sea of Diverging Waters. The four chief nations of the western side of the world—Ashoka in northern Soare, Soto in western Soare, Morrim in eastern Soare, and Angkar, the largest of the Scattered Isles—continue to experience growth and prosperity since the fall of the Mianorite gods, although power struggles within the countries—or outside of them—continue to ensue.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    Fytha
A superior Ophite cast from her kin

They were still in Ashoka, their homeland, but Fytha was personally interested in seeing all of the other countries. She'd never seen the ocean, or a proper forest. Jungles, alright, but not a...deciduous, forest. Or evergreen.
Though she hadn't seen many jungles. In fact, only one, and briefly at that. They were too humid for her tastes, thought the warmth often accompanying that was always welcome.
The two Ophites were at the gates, then through, their forms towering above everyone else, and getting more than a few looks, or outright stares. Especially towards her brother, because he was naked. Not that it was particularly indecent for an Ophite, or at all, really, but it was certainly strange to humans, or anything humanoid. She herself was wearing just her pants, as well as the gold collar, which she almost never removed anyways. Everything else was in the pack on her back, and her golden, bladed staff in her left hand.

She got off the main path and walked over to the wall, watching the colours through the alabaster, then leaning her staff against it, placing her palms against the stone. The lizard closed her red eyes, taking in a deep breath.
The air and structures themselves seemed filled with magic, and it murmured and hummed around her, caressing, trailing like fingers across her scales, through her fingers, over her eyes and ears and nostrils.
She let out the breath and called out to Zygus.
"Hey Zygus, come here! Can't you feel the magic? It's everywhere."
She murmured to herself, "Yes, this is a good place."
Opening her eyes, she took the staff again and turned around, searching for her brother, wondering how far he'd wandered. Though truthfully, she'd wandered off this time.

Zygus felt small in comparison to this city. The walls towered above him, the alabaster turned pink and orange by the dawn. And above those walls were towers, buildings whose purpose he couldn't understand. The Ophites of home never built things this large; he had never seen anything like this and found himself intimidated. This wasn't helped by the fact that there were people who flowed in and out of the city, despite- or perhaps because- it was morning. He didn't know, he didn't understand the way these humans did anything. There were those who could be hunters, with bows and quivers of arrows, some in ragged clothes whose purpose he could not determine, then ones who watched him with a suspicious eye, fingering sheathed swords. Zygus held his own spear tighter, tried to ignore them and restrain an instinctive hiss that was building up in his throat.
However, as they approached the city, he was distracted by the carvings in the walls- runes, their lines flowing so elegantly that even he could appreciate their craftsmanship. He wandered off to go touch them, and felt a little thrill of magic run through him, a shock that buzzed up his arm and diffused into his bones and muscles. He let out a hiss of pleasant surprise, but the moment was interrupted by a guard, who yelled at him from a distance, "Hey! Scaly! Move on!"
Zygus growled low in his throat and pulled his hand away from the wall, breaking contact with the flow of energy, glaring at the guard. He was probably only doing his job, but still...
He looked around through the flows of people and realized with a sinking feeling that he'd lost Fytha. He squinted through the bright light, looking for her, and found her easily- she was much taller then every one else. She stood close to the wall- he went to her and stood by her side. "Perhaps it's best to leave the walls alone...the guards are a bit touchy about their wall," he said, his deep voice sardonic.

"They haven't said anything to me, but you're right, it's a good idea."
With a hissy chuckle, she took a better grip of her staff and looked more closely at him.
"I always like the way you express yourself. But hey, I'm sorry this place doesn't seem as good for you as it does me. What are we going to do now, though? You know I'd love to travel all over, find the best place for us to get jobs or eventually set up a shop, and just see what everywhere else is like."
She exhaled breath, looking up at the sky and the walls and higher buildings further on.
"You could go find some commissions to do, while I go to the magic school that's supposed to be here, watch the other ways of magic. See if I could do any of them, though I doubt it. We should stay here for a little while, unless we prove unsuccessful."
Fytha was sometimes very chatty with him, simply to make up for his lack of talking. It was an unconscious thing, and she'd never really noticed it. He probably didn't either or he would have brought it up at some point.

Zygus thought, his tail swishing in the dust. He really just wanted to return home- the way people here stared at him...He held back that hiss rising in his throat, seeing the guards glaring at him suspiciously again. "We won't be getting anywhere unless we have money," he said finally, focusing on his sister's face, "We have a long day ahead of us."
He began to walk, leading the way through the gates and into the city.
His first impression was of claustrophobia- the buildings crowded in around him, and the people flowed about him like sand on the wind, jostling him and giving him odd looks. He didn't know where they were going, really. He assumed that human cities must be laid out something like the Heiroan village, with the stores in the centre, but he felt disoriented by the buildings leaning over...Oh, how he longed for the oasis, where the only enclosed spaces were in simple huts and in the shade of trees. There, the desert stretched to the horizon and in light like this, the rising sun, the day was still cool and sand glowed like gold.
The recollection calmed him, and he looked to his sister, stepping closer as if to lend further protection to her by his mere presence.

Fytha agreed with a slight stamp of her staff against the hard ground, then followed him.
It was definitely crowded, and she didn't particularly like it, but it was a new experience and she'd be damned if she didn't try to get something out of it. The smaller humans shoved against her, not on purpose/maliciously, most hurrying to get where they were going. Wherever that might be, which she had to assume was either home or to get food or other necessities. Some gave her and Zygus strange looks, but she brushed them off. What else could you expect?

If two humans decided they suddenly wanted to traipse around, she supposed she would do the same. Of course, much of the situation was entirely different, but...
She arched her back as she walked, cracking a few vertebrae and looking up at all of the buildings. With her height, she was nearly at roof level for some of them, as was her brother. Since they were only two inches apart.
The Ophite flicked her tail in irritation at a fleeting thought on what Zygus had said of guards, and it caused a stir - a human cried out, stumbling. Had she really done that that easily?

A sigh escaped her scaly lips and she glanced back. The person was glaring at her but didn't seem to be ready to call guards on her.
"Stupid clumsy scaly," the female human muttered, pushing through people to get away.
Fytha looked away and hissed quietly to herself, gripping her bladed staff harder.
She looked over at her brother. "You know, we should get some information about Ophites into a book or something. More easily digestible by the public. Just so they aren't as eager to be afraid of their ignorance and accuse us of something we didn't do, or grossly exaggerate it. I don't like these humans pressing in so close when they could potentially be dangerous."

(Lol the woman she tripped had such a great comeback...!! xD I giggled a lot and idk why.)

Zygus stopped at the sound of a yelp from a human- Fytha had tripped her, apparently, although he could hardly understand the woman's annoyance. The humans were bumping into each other and tripping each other up all the time, and yet no one showed anger.
Why couldn't these people be more accepting? He had managed to accept their society- he'd have to if he wanted to live a reasonably comfortable life. He gave up his culture, his tradition to accept theirs. He'd be stuck making weapons for humans, buying food from humans, relying on them for his wellbeing, but how was that even possible if things were going to be like this?
Anger grew in him, it tasted like the air before a sandstorm, but all he could do was breathe in deeply in an attempt to calm himself. He put his free hand on his sister's shoulder briefly, to show her that he agreed, to reassure her, without words.
The crowds soon began to thicken- Zygus assumed this meant they were coming closer to some sort of bazaar, recalling how the Ophites tended to congregate to trade on certain days. A man shouldered him in the crowd and then was gone; perhaps it was an accident, perhaps not. "We must restrain our tails, but they need not keep their shoulders to themselves," he remarked to his sister in an undertone, and let out a sour little laugh, a rocky, hissing sound which made the people surround him stare. He stopped and glared down the street, trying not to make eye contact with anyone.

The touch was an assurance as he meant it to be. It didn't, even often, require words for the intentions and thoughts to pass between them.
She gave a small nod in response, and proceeded to keep her staff and tail close.
His remark set off her own laughter as they were practically carried through the streets, her's smoother but drawing still more stares when she joined him. However, he stopped pretty quickly, and she was forced to try and stifle giggles with her clawed hand.
As soon as she noticed the higher mass of the people, she also noticed the university, still a little ways away, but she could tell with her more acute eyes.
"It's up there, pretty much straight ahead. I don't know if either of us could get any sort of job there, but we can atleast look around. It's the centre of the city, after all."

It was amazing how quickly the crowds had carried them through nearly half the city. Was it not very big or did she underestimate the speed at which they travelled? Or perhaps, did time just feel faster than it really was, out of touch?
With another sigh and a blink of her dark red eyes, she didn't have to wait long before they were at the school building.
"Come on," she hissed in her brother's ear, and waded through, gently pushing aside those humans she needed to, and arriving after a few more moments to stand in front of the entrance way, feet apart, shoulders back and staff set solidly in the ground at her feet, left hand holding it firmly.
Her eyes blinked slowly as she surveyed it, then sniffed the air this time for his scent. Very close, atleast.
    "Let's go."

The university towered over them- it seemed more a monument than a school. Zygus was glad he wouldn't be going in there; surely it must feel like being crushed by a rock to be in such a massive construction. He shivered, and touched his sister's shoulder again.
"I will go see the marketplace. We can find each other afterwards. Good luck." He looked her in the eye for a moment, a look that conveyed all his care for her, and then headed off into the crowds.
He lost sight of her and could still smell her for a time, but then all the various stenches of humanity pressed in around him. Sweat, piss, the stench of a tannery and Merasin knew what else. He wondered how they could bear it- living in this city of oppressive buildings and smells and people. He wondered if he could learn to bear it.
He assumed that the general flow of people would heading to the market and so he followed them, at times half-carried through the streets by their relentless movement. They were like blood rushing through a vein, heading for one central purpose- the heart of the city.
Finally the crowds deposited him in a place that must be a bazaar- rows of stalls, people yelling about the vegetables, meat, dates, jewellry, cloth, spices, enchantments, curses, papers and pineapples they were selling. Zygus' head spun with it all, his senses overloaded. "Alright," he said to himself, eyes wide as he took in the chaos, "This will take longer than I expected."

She nodded to her brother, since she'd known he was going to go to the market here rather than with her into the academy.
With that she started walking again, quickly. It wasn't a long walk at all, and there was only one person coming back the other way, who strangely gave her a glance without seeming to care she was a seven foot lizard.
Hissing lowly with pleasure, she arrived at the open double doors and the guards posted in front. They paused for a moment, looking up doubtfully.
"You won't cause no trouble, right?" one asked, looking at the staff.
You better not," the other stated, glaring her full in the eyes.
"Don't worry, she said, lifting her right hand with the palm out. "I won't cause any trouble. Just here to observe and learn."

The second grunted while the first just looked away, and she took that as a yes to her entrance. She found she also had to duck...a whole foot. What a bother.
Doors were going to be a bad thing for both of them wherever they went. Luckily he wouldn't have to deal with them yet, not in a market. Assuming this one was open - most were.
Fytha also had to tilt her staff forward, glancing behind her to make sure it didn't hit anyone.
The ceiling was luckily higher than her staff, though not by too much.
With a sigh she walked through the school. The walls were thick, because the inside seemed to be stone and wood - depending on what room it was - but the outside had been alabaster. Which seemed silly because you could usually see through well enough to see the stone and wood on the other side. But maybe alabaster had some sort of magical weakness? Or too much proclivity?
There were study rooms, practice rooms, and various private rooms; she assumed those were for teachers or students who stayed overnight occasionally.

There were a few teaching rooms too, closer to the back. How odd. Wouldn't you want to take lessons first? She traced her steps back to the front, where there was a desk and a man who sat behind it, with papers and quills. Some cards and pamphlets sat at the front, as well as sign-in sheet of sorts.
No wonder he'd given her a look as she went by...
He glared at her when she came back within view, and she shrugged and went over. For a moment she had to think, because she couldn't write much at all. But her name was something she had learned first.
The too-small pen was awkward in her grip after she'd transferred the staff to her right hand, but she managed to get out some scrawly handwriting onto the lines proclaiming Fytha.
Keeping it simple. She didn't care for them knowing where she came from. If they needed verification, she'd tell them, but otherwise...

Placing the pen down, she dipped her head to him. He grunted like the guard and looked back down to his papers, writing. She was tempted to peek over in curiosity, but that would just be strange in this situation, in more ways than one.
The female Ophite let out another sigh and went to the back to check out the rooms where lessons were being learned.
    ~
It hadn't taken long to drive her from the first teaching room to the academy's library.
A young student, probably in their teens, had let out a shriek when they'd seen her, and the teacher had first apologized, then told her that the class was full. She'd peeked in, then asked if she could just stand and listen, but the teacher shook her head.
"The teenagers are already hard to deal with...a very tall lizard would be distracting, honestly, even if you minded your own business."
Fytha respected that, and decided to just go read.

She'd been taught to speak and read much of common, but not to write it. It seemed like it should be easy to figure it out, connect the three, but it would take time. A lot of time, probably.
Her skimmings told of a completely different way of magic, atleast for the most part. Some ways were similar, but most other humanoids simply tapped a natural reserve outside their bodies or connected to something within. The latter wasn't that different but...her's came from a physical organ inside of her body, and her faith.
There was a small section on general history and culture of Ashoka, and much smaller on the world. She updated herself slightly on that too, mostly culture, learning a bit about humans did things. The lizard found herself having frequent problems at some points, and tried to see if a dictionary and attempts at pronouncing the words out loud would help.

She really needed to get better at the reading stuff. Writing wasn't as important; it could come later.
With a light thud she closed her current large tome closed. Now she had a headache, which was just...fantastic.
She was finally getting funny looks from people who had happened to hear her muttered words, and with a quiet groan she rose to her scaled feet, picking up her staff. After replacing the book, she decided it was time to leave. It must have been...nearly, two hours or so? Something too long. She assumed her brother would have finished whatever he had gone to do by now.

Fytha walked out, nodding her head again to the two same guards on duty. The first smiled slightly and the disagreeable one just grunted a second time and glared at her.
She smiled slightly herself, showing much of her needle teeth.
He blanched, and she spun around and left.
"Hey! You're not allowed to threaten guards!" the man shouted, now red-faced as she turned around again. He reached for his sword.
The taller, more complacent guard took a step forward, a hand out.
    "Calm d-down, it didn't do a-anything."
"I'm a she! Look at the hips!" she said, gritting her teeth, violently pointing her index finger at her right hip. "That's something your human females have! I'm female."

"Hey stop being angry, put your weapon down!" said the shorter one, still red-faced. Now he drew his sword, slowly.
"Really. Are you serious? Of course you're serious."
Fed up, she started backing away.
    "IT'S GONNA CHARGE!!"
    "What the grys-"
She shoved her thoughts at Zygus, trying to convey a message of her state of danger. It wasn't like she really was, she could kill these people with ease, but that would be problematic, to say the least. They were going to try and arrest her, most likely, but if not then the short guard wielding the sword was probably going to start trying to chop at her. The other guard was looking scared and confused, hands still empty and extended towards his companion of this round of watch duty.

    (Finally...ugh.)

It would be best to approach this systematically.
The market appeared to be arranged in something like aisles, and so Zygus headed down the one furthest to his left. His tallness was an advantage here- he could see over people and look at each stand from a distance, and so did not have to do as everyone else did- pushing through crowds of people to catch a glimpse of what everyone was selling.
For a city in the middle of a desert, there was certainly a wide selection of oddities here, including many things he did not know the words for. New scents filled his nostrils, curled their way through his brain. People played music in nooks on the street, and the sounds mixed together with the roar of voices all around. The resulting discord came down upon him in waves. The continual bombardment of his senses began to make him feel dizzy, and he tried not to lose control of his body and wind up causing some disaster.
The first aisle of stalls seemed to be dedicated to raw food and spices. What a waste of time, he thought, a barely-restrained hiss rising in his throat. It took him some time to swim his way through the crowds, and all the while flies buzzed through the air, often landing on him and trying to suck at his eyes and nostrils. The annoyance combined with the madness all around was almost unbearable.
But he calmed himself- imagined that the people and sounds were like a sandstorm. They would sometimes descend upon the Heiroans at home, and sometimes they could last for days, but he always knew that eventually it would end. This was much the same.
Finally, after what must have been fifteen minutes, he rounded the bend and entered the second aisle, which was thankfully less crowded. People here seemed to be selling mostly fabrics and clothing- useless to him, since he wore none, but he went all the way through anyways, and couldn't help but admire the bright colours and intricate designs. He thought briefly that Fytha might like to see this- she did adore the Cualyma robe, though that was more for a sentimental reason. He shrugged away the thought and went down the next aisle.
Finally, he found what he was looking for.
The stalls here glimmered with metal and gems- jewellry in all sorts of shapes and designs. He smiled his needle-toothed smile and plunged in.
He stopped at every stall he could, admiring the craftsmanship of these humans. For beings that generally made their wares without much magic, they were not bad. He had usually made weaponry amongst the Heiroans, but he had enjoyed making jewellry a fair bit- more room for creativity, though the opportunities to do so were few and far between. This work inspired him- if humans could do this then what could he do?
I could make a good living here, he thought, But how do you start? He considered asking one of the stall-owners but every time he stopped to look over their wares, they looked at him suspiciously.
He paused in the middle of the thoroughfare, imagining what it would be like to own a stall here. Perhaps people would come to know him and accept him, perhaps he'd be renowned for his work, and his name would be slipped into conversation, a name emblematic of quality and beauty.
I could change things- people could learn that we are not a threat, we are not merely animals.
At that moment, someone bumped into him and looked back, glowering. Right. Don't stand in the middle of the road. Got it. He glowered back and went on.
He spent a long time lingering over the stalls, checking the sun every now and then to monitor the time. Now that he was doing something he enjoyed, time passed swiftly and it seemed he had only spent five minutes there (when in fact it was well over an hour) when he arrived at a stall draped in purple and gold. It was very fancy, with a painted sign showing ornate letters he could not read. A group of richly dressed humans gathered in front of it, gabbling over the prices of the jewelry.
They fell silent as Zygus approached, giving him suspicious looks, but he didn't really notice because oh this work lovely- smooth and intricately patterned. Thick armbands of what must be electrum showing scenes of lush trees and stretching deserts, necklaces shaped like mythical animals which Zygus had never even heard of, intaglio brooches and gleaming rings. He gazed at this work with admiration, a smile coming to his face. He reached out to touch one of the necklaces, showing something like a snake combined with a human. But a voice interrupted him- "Hey!"
It was man behind the stall, glaring at him. "What do you think you're doing? Scaring away customers and now trying to fondle my work? Can't you read?" He pointed at a small sign which Zygus could not make head nor tail of. He drew back his hand and gripped his spear in both fists, trying to offer a conciliatory smile. "I apologize, it was not my intent to-"
The man's eyes widened at the sight of Zygus' sharp, gleaming teeth. "Guards! Guards! He's going to attack me!" he cried, backing away.
Zygus looked around wildly and saw men in gleaming armour pushing their way through the crowds.
He ran, nearly knocking some people over but it didn't matter any more. It was clear enough to him- he'd never be accepted here, his only option was to get out before they locked him up in a jail.
He soon managed to lose himself in the crowds of people still trying to force their way into the marketplace, but he didn't imagine for a second that he'd be able to hide here- he was probably still very visible due to his height, and the fact that he gleamed white and red in the sun. He hissed in anger and continued to push his way through the crowds, making his way towards the shape of the school looming over the surrounding buildings.
It was then that a panic forced his way into his head- Fytha! She was calling for him and from what he could tell, she was still at the school.
He rushed even more, receiving many glares as he went on. He was nearly there, and then found himself tripping over someone's leg, stumbling onto the steps of the school spectacularly. He cursed mentally and then got up, hissing in anger and pain- he'd hit his knee. There, in front of him, was Fytha being menaced by the two guards. He ascended the steps, his eyes gleaming with rage, his hand clenched around his spear. "Leave her be," he commanded, his deep voice rumbling like thunder.

Fytha was frozen still for a few moments after she'd called out to her brother, completely unsure of what to do. She couldn't kill them. She couldn't go to jail.
He'd asked her to put her weapon down, and so that seemed to be the good thing to do.
Just as she was about to move again, the nicer guard still by the door suddenly looked past her, his eyes widening even more.
Then Zygus was there, being intimidating. She had registered his hiss of pain, but nothing could be done at the moment.
She saw the flicker of fear in the angry guard's eyes, but then he just waved his sword in front of him and shouted.
    "Put your weapons down!"

The other man in uniform finally decided to say something, coming several determined steps down to his companion and grabbing his shoulder.
While they bickered - still keeping enough attention on the two Ophites to not let them run off - Fytha decided to put her bladed staff down, gesturing to Zygus that he should do the same with his spear.
After another minute, the shorter guard shrugged angrily out of his companion's grip, and huffed, slowly putting his sword away when he realized they were no longer armed.
He glowered at them for many long seconds before finally speaking.
"I think I got something wrong here, but you two need to go."
The other guard picked up where the tempermental one had left off. "You may take your weapons but keep them in a position that does not look like you are considering attacking. I'm informing the rest of the guards of your presence, and that it is not wanted in this city for much longer. You have an hour. Then you must leave."

Fytha nodded to show her consent and understanding, then slowly bent and picked up her golden staff.
Once they had left the walls of the academy, she stopped, leaning against the outside of that same wall, not too far from the entrance.
    She looked to Zygus.
"I think we'll be okay. Did you have trouble too, in the market? Or not find what you were looking for? Either way, we should head back there. I'm a better reader than you, and there are things I might want if you couldn't find what you needed. Let's just be careful, silent even, if we must."
If he had had trouble, it might have been with reading something about a product he wished to buy. If that was the case, she could atleast read it for him. Otherwise, she'd understand if he just left her with some directions and waited outside the city walls.

The female Ophite looked around once again. Her headache had gotten worse with the tension, and she put a hand to the side of her head, closing her eyes as she thought.
When she opened those dark red orbs again, she realized that the city had lost much of it's beauty, in her eyes. The argument with the guards, the prejudice. It had stained the city of the Oracles.
With a sigh, she realized now how much warmer it was, as well. It was sometimes past noon. The sun was at its highest right now, and for a moment she smiled, feeling the warmth soak into her white and red scales.
"I should treat that knee, Zygus. And if you wish to just give me directions to the market and wait outside the city, I wouldn't mind. If you wanted to buy something, you should let me know what it was, though."

Slowly, grudgingly, Zygus put his spear down. It clattered against the stone and nearly rolled away, so he had to trap it with his foot.
He suffered the indignity of this with his arms crossed across his chest, clenching at his skin with his claws. The guards told them off like they were children to be ushered away, commanded to consider what they'd done wrong. And this stupid, metal-encased human was smaller than him, less powerful...but he had to restrain himself. He'd go. Violence wouldn't get him anything.
He picked up his spear and held it as a staff. He stood for a moment and looked down on the two imperiously, and then said slowly, "True men think with their brains, not their swords."
With that, he turned to leave, following his sister. They stopped- he merely stood there and glowered as his sister talk. "My presence was not desired in the marketplace," he growled, "I don't need anything. I'd like to get out of here."
Back to wide open spaces, not narrows streets crowded with people and filth. This place certainly wouldn't work for them- they'd have to find some other place. He hoped to Merasin that other cities were different, perhaps more accommodating.
He began to walk, brooding, pushing his way out onto the busy road. Things seemed to have calmed down a little- that was good. They'd be out of her sooner.

    Fytha
A superior Ophite cast from her kin

At her brother's comment on "true men", she surprisingly found herself feeling bad for the more reasonable guard...the one who had, indeed, been far more reasonable. In fact, that one had used his brain. Calmed down his companion, then taken over so he couldn't be allowed to mess up even more.
Not that it mattered at all...she narrowed her dark red eyes, then blinked slowly as Zygus talked, angry, then stalked off.
Well, she could get to the knee later. It wasn't bad but...well, she supposed it didn't matter too much. It seemed he was too easily discouraged, but that was not something she found surprising; shoved from their homes...though...she shook her head. No sense pondering over the details she'd thought a dozen times or more before. Not now, at the very least.
She caught his arm for a moment to tell him to wait outside the city and that she'd be back soon, then headed to the market.

She took care of the humans, but also did her best to hurry, getting there in a decent amount of time. She browsed quickly, mostly just waiting for something to catch her eye.
Purple and gold, just like her robe, and a well-dressed man. The stall was there where she'd almost passed it.
    "Hey..."
The voice was loud, spoken by the stall owner, the tone and face suspicious.
"Me?" Fytha questioned, pointing to herself.
"You weren't here before were you? Yeah, you're different. Where are you guys coming from all of the sudden anyway?"
The man's tone in the last question was annoyed, mostly.
Fytha hissed quietly, but did not speak further. Saying anything, especially about her brother, could easily be a big mistake.

Instead she just looked - first at the sign, which read "Stand back and no touching" and "High quality jewelry" and something else...she could only read the word "unwelcome". All in fairly small script. No wonder her brother couldn't read - he would have tried to touch something here probably, and gotten yelled at or worse.
Then she looked over all the things the stall possessed, making sure to keep back like the sign said.
"Sir," she said, "how much does this necklace cost?"
She pointed to a certain necklace that consisted of a silver chain that's length could be adjusted, and a gold-plated...naga? at the end. He blinked and told her a price that she felt was a little exorbitant.

Fytha suspected her further attempts at haggling didn't go so well because he was already wary of her, but in the end she purchased it for a little lower than his first price. It wasn't like they were horribly lacking for money - as a Cualyma, she'd had plenty - but paying as little as you could was never a bad thing.
So long as you took care of it.
She adjusted the length so that the golden naga was almost touching her same-coloured collar, then headed out of the city.
As she walked, she remembered how good she had felt about this place, and how Zygus' feelings compared. Those two guards had been a small matter, so for her this day had gone quite well. But for her sibling...with a flick of her tail she looked to the sky to check the time, happy that the sun had not moved. She had made sure to be quick, but when looking at pretty things many beings tended to...well, they lost track of time. Similar story with anything else one loved doing.

It wasn't long before she was outside of the tall, alabaster walls. She spotted her brother and went to him.
"So, where are we going now then? Eldahar is back through our previous footsteps and beyond. Keep heading this direction and we'll hit the coast. Or there's that small town, but after that's we'd have to cross the Tamarind Bay into Morrim and the mountains..."
She'd studied a map a few times, and picked up a few things from talking to people. Her focus had stayed on most of Ashoka and the edges of the other countries, though, so if they ventured past that...they'd have to pick up more information at some point.
Fytha leaned her head against her bladed staff, watching Zygus.

Zygus made his way outside the city and breathed a sigh of relief at being out in an open area, away from the crowded streets and angry eyes. He looked out to the horizon- the dunes that rolled all the way out and brushed backs with the sky. It calmed him, this sight.
However, he became aware that the guards were staring at him, so he walked a distance away, off the road, and crouched in the dust, looking out across the landscape, one hand still gripping his spear. He thought about what had happened, and wondered how much was his fault. People certainly weren't used to Ophites but what could he do about that? He tried to imagine what it was for them to be faced with these tall creatures who they couldn't truly understand.
Were there points where he'd acted out of line, things that he could fix next time?
He sighed, closing his eyes for a moment, thinking I don't know, I really don't know.
He heard footsteps behind him and stood, turned around to see Fytha. He pondered her question- he didn't know so much about the layout of the land, though he had a rough idea of what was going on. "Perhaps we should go southwards. I've heard that some of the cities there are more...diverse."
Maybe they'd be more openly accepted in such places, no more fiascos such as this.
His eyes caught on the necklace his sister now wore, and he immediately recognized it one from that stall where he'd been yelled at. A mix of emotions rose up- resentment for what had happened with another wave of appreciation for the delicacy of his work. However, he said nothing of it- he didn't know what to say. He just wanted to walk, get away from here.
