SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    Reid

"All in due time," Reid remarked as she observed the change in his visage. That radiant charm Reid had grown to associate with Aniketos had left his face and was now replaced with a frown. Silence soon followed and after a while the lack of dialogue began to cause a state of unrest in her, unknowing of what to say. Consolation was something she never excelled in. Digging her bare feet into the sand she watched absentmindedly as the digits scraped and burrowed into the cold sand, nestling cozily into the earth. It was only when Aniketos spoke that she looked up again to see him sporting a grin. Reid nodded a bit as he thanked her, and listened as he went on.

"Well I know next to nothing about politics, but I'd guess it's better if people are talking about you rather than struggling to remember your name," she began, shrugging a bit as she sifted the sand between her toes. "And either way I wouldn't call anyone running for a political position sane. More like...sensibly challenged," she said teasingly. True she had distaste for the political scene and politicians but the unexpected encounter had changed her mind about at least one of them. It was progress at any rate. "Well I'm not much for gossip but at times it can come in handy. I mean, when you arrive to a new area and want to know what's going on just listen to what the occupants are murmuring about. It truly can be handy at time," Reid stated in thought, and paused before adding, " You can learn quite a bit, if you take the time to really listen." A few moments passed and the traveler shrugged a bit before making her way back to the fire, taking a soft seat on the earth as the flames lit her face with its orange glow. She welcomed the warmth openly, her posture becoming slack as fatigue from the long day began to set in.

"That is...an accurate assessment," he said with a laugh. Of course, some politicians were so obsessed with the idea of a nice fat salary and some prestige that they lost touch with what the job was supposed to be about.
"In any case, it's a matter of picking out what is rumour and what is truth. Some people aren't too good at that, I'm afraid."
He watched her move to sit, and turned to face the fire. She seemed tired, slouching there. He was weary as well, he realized- the conversation and the excitement he got from a flare of patriotism had distracted him from that. He yawned, hiding it behind his hand delicately, and then stretched, rolling around his sore muscles with a sigh. "It grows late," he said, which was really a statement of the obvious, but it gave him an excuse to get up and take his blankets from his pack. He unrolled them but chose to sat there for a few minutes, with one wrapped about his shoulders, watching the bright stars dangling above.

"It's getting there," Reid replied, wishing away the sleepiness that nagged at her eyelids and weighed down her bones. She watched from afar as Aniketos retrieved a blanket from his things and wrapped it around his shoulders, and gazed at the glittering stars above the two of them. Reid had yet to wander back to her tent and instead leaned back to lay on the cool grass with her arms crossed below her fiery crown of curls. There she rested admiring the positions of the stars that nestled into the inky darkness. "I was always rubbish with the constellations. Only ever knew that one," she suddenly remarked, and extended her arm, pointing upwards towards to point it out. "The sea serpent Ecrede, from those old myths." Her pale finger traced the curved shape of the celestial beast, only to rest on top of her stomach. "Then again most everyone I knew around the seaside villages spoke of those legends - sea monsters and what have you." Her voice was a bit of a murmur as her mind delved into memories of old. Growing up near the sea - fearing it at first, then slowly growing to love it in spite of its blind wrath. In all these years she still hadn't really forgiven it for taking all those she cared for most - her father, her shipmates, her friends. But that was the nature of the ocean - blind and vengeful - and Reid had accepted that long ago. Still, the memories of people seemed to linger in the places she visited, even if parts of it had changed over the years. Even here, at the banks of Navale Lake, they floated about like specters along the sand.

Her expression melted from the softened and approachable state that Aniketos had managed to mold it into and reverted to its usual subtle scowl. Furrowing her brow, Reid continued to stare upwards yet said nothing. Her touchy mood had appeared to have gotten the best of her once again, and the warm and pleasant person she had been for a few shining moments seemed to disintegrate in the darkness on the banks of the lake. It was only when she heard the dull sound of hooves on earth that she turned her head in the darkness. Tobias, her horse, had wandered back into camp, making his way to the fireside only to stop near Reid. He was nothing special in terms of ability or appearance but he was always there when she needed him. "Fed up with the grass, eh?" Reid inquired as she ripped a bit of the vegetation from out of the earth, only to let the broken blades fall between her rough hands. "Well you're going to have to get over it. I have a feeling we're going to be in Soto for a while," Reid said matter-of-factly.

"I'm afraid I don't know any constellations at all."
His parents hadn't really cared for the stars and neither had he. Strange, that anyone should try to make sense of the jumble of lights above. He considered this for a while, mentally drawing shapes between the stars- triangles and squares, then long winding paths across the sky. The weariness of the day made his mind wander, and he imagined what it would be to walk across the sky, following a road of stars. As he travelled, Reid's voice echoed across the nightscape, pulling him out of his dream-like state and back into the conversation.
"We never had...Ecrede. In Reine. It was always Skyros, bringing storms to shake the men off boats so he could have a feast."
Even as he talked, he could tell that she was no longer malleable. It was a feeling, as if the air between them had lost its warmth, becoming brittle and icy to touch.
So much for that, he thought, peering at her through the dark. He couldn't see much of her face, and so was left without clues as to this sudden change of mood. He wondered what went on inside that head, but she shut him out quite effectively.
He turned around at the arrival of Reid's horse, his eyebrows raised. He watched her converse with this Tobias, realizing that she seemed to have quite a close relationship with him. There was something he didn't understand- why talk to something that wouldn't talk back? But he made no comment, only turned away and swirled his fingers in the soft sand, thinking of the feel of skin under his hands.

Didn't know any constellations? She furrowed her brow slightly in the darkness at such a notion. True she herself was ignorant of most all of them but to be unable to point out even one? Yet there seemed to be a tone of indifference in Aniketos' voice - as if he thought them to be silly creations of man's nonsensical thinking. At this she said nothing, for Reid had always had a romanticized perception of the stars. The notion of beasts and men roaming about in the endless expanses of the heavens...permanently remembered as sparkling gems; to live on when others had long since been dead. To her she found the notion to be curious and invigorating. Like the sky itself was her own personal story book and all she need do was glance above to recall all the old myths she'd been told over the years.

The one that Aniketos did mention, however, was one that certainly rang a bell with her. Having stayed in Reine for a fair amount of time it had seeped into her mind only to remain dormant over the years, for no one had mentioned Skyros in quite some time. Yet she didn't verbalize this, and instead began to pluck at the blades of grass beneath her fingertips as Tobias hovered close by. The soft earth was beginning to lull her to sleep and the crackle of the fire was like a dull lullaby. It was time to retreat to the tent and call it a night.

She got to her feet sluggishly and whistled sharply at the horse. His ears perked up a bit and he followed her as she walked towards the tent, only for Reid to tie up Tobias on a tree near the makeshift residence. When she finished she turned her curly head towards Aniketos who had turned away from the fire. "I'm turning in. If you need an extra blanket or something of that sort, let me know," Reid said plainly, only to duck into the darkness of the small tent, the flaps closing behind her.

Aniketos had just begun to slip into that trance-state again when Reid spoke. He opened his eyes to watch her retreat into her tent. "Good night," he said, "Sleep well."
He felt a vague disappointment that he hadn't managed to slip his way into the tent with her, to share her bed, even though he was currently too tired for that in any case.
He stared up at the moon- this was about the time that he'd wake from his first sleep, normally. At home this meant that he'd get up to record his dreams or read, here he hardly knew what he'd do with that hour of peaceful wakefulness in any case. Tomorrow he'd feel like hell...too bad. He'd survive.
He laid himself out on the grass, his eyes turned up to the sky. The night was the last thing he saw before he was lulled into sleep, and dreams of nude, pale-skinned woman adorned only with stars.

Sleep came slowly for Reid. For the first hour she lay awake contemplating the remainder of her stay in Soto, her blade resting next to her left hand as tired eyes stared at the dark canopy above her. She longed to leave the south before the first snow fell - although the inevitable rounds to Morrim would more than likely follow soon after her business here. Rubbing her eyes roughly the disheveled woman grunted in annoyance at the thought of trudging through mounds of heavy white powder and the freezing environment that would soon cover the area in a few month's time. She'd take raging heat and the threat of dehydration over snow any day. Yet as the crickets chirped merrily outside her tent and the minutes passed by sleep closed her heavy eyelids and sent her off to the realm of dreams. In the morning she'd be woken by the soft rays of sunlight and greet the day with fresh zeal.

It wasn't the sun that woke her up.

Usually its rays had a way of pouring into the small crack in her tent . The gold light often woke her as it beamed on her fair face, but not on this particular morning. In the early hours she continued to lay still, her features softer in slumber than they ever were in her waking hours. But the bliss of sleep was rudely interrupted as a shrill sound pierced her eardrums, sending her to her feet, but not before she armed herself. Equipped with bow and quiver, her eyes narrowed in an untrusting glare as her ears probed the silence for a sound - any sound. A series of shrill and distinct neighs soon followed and Reid rushed from her tent, an arrow drawn and ready to strike. Her feet carried her swiftly to the spot of the ruckus and with narrowed eyes she observed a large bear lumbering about strangely. Its tufts of dark brown hair appeared haggard as it continued to approach, its heavy skin rippling with each moving of muscle and large limbs. Small dark eyes locked onto its target as the beast stalked closer to Tobias. The steed let out one final shriek before tugging away from the tree that held him there, and the knot came loose in an instant. Hooves pounded against the earth the animal took off from camp, yet the agitated bear did not run after. Instead the great beast pushed its front paws off of the dewy earth, forcing its torso to tower high above the rudely awakened traveler. With a fire raging in its beady black eyes his powerful jaw opened to reveal a mouth full of frothing saliva and large yellowed canines and tilting its head back, emitted a terrible roar, its reeking breath propelling its reckless fury on its red haired target.

Panic. Her hand gripped her bow intensely, causing her knuckles to turn snow white as Reid began to slowly creep backwards, her green slits of eyes never leaving the thundering creature as it emitted another terrible roar, frothing saliva flying from its festering mouth. The creature was diseased - that much she could tell. Yet this would only make it harder to kill, for in every fiber of her bones the stubborn woman knew it would not back down.

(-listens to Verdi's Dies Irae for epicness- :D)

Aniketos dreamed that he stood in the docks of Reine, at the end of a pier, looking out to sea. There was nobody to be seen, even the boats were missing, though Aniketos paid no more than a cursory thought to this. Instead he was preoccupied with the thought of a liason- it was the correct time, he thought, but what if he'd been late somehow?
He confided these thoughts to yellow-haired Xanthus, who was suddenly next to him, but said nothing. He had just finished when the ocean began to boil, and a shape rose from the water, pale and glistening with water. A woman, pale as the foam on the waves, with streaming dark hair, who walked across the waves towards him.
Xanthus was forgotten- Aniketos' eye was drawn to the curves of her naked body, her elegance, and he knew, suddenly, that the woman he had come to meet had been the goddess of the ocean all along; she had merely been hiding it from him.
She climbed onto the pier and kissed him, pressed into him. They laid on the ground, which became grass, and as she climbed atop him, there was high scream from somewhere nearby. She tried to keep him there, this goddess, but at a second sound, recognizable as a terrified neigh, he pushed her away-

He woke, his heart thudding with the sound of a commotion. He sat up and stared around into the dark to see Reid pushing her way out of the tent and standing to face the forest. He couldn't tell what was happening at first- Tobias stormed away into the trees, but why? He stood, reaching for the bow which he had strapped onto his pack, and then saw what it was- a bear, distinguishable as a dark shape amongst the trees.
Fear struck his heart- facing a man was one thing, but a bear, a great mountain of muscle taller than he was, was something he'd never had to defend himself against before.
His eyes flickered to his own horse- a fair enough distance away that the bear hadn't seemed to have noticed it, straining against the rope that bound it to the tree.
He raised his bow only to remember it was unstrung. The bear roared and Aniketos quailed for a moment, the urge to run nearly overcoming him.
But Reid stood there, her bow at the ready, right in harm's way. What a coward he would seem, he would never forgive himself if he ran.
He narrowed his eyes and dropped his bow, held out his hands and summoned up magical energy from the spring that flowed in his chest. He let the energy go with an involuntary shout, and dark cords, formed from shadow, wrapped about the bear. He couldn't see what happened next- he didn't have the time, for he was already ducking down to grab his bow and hurriedly string it. At the very least, the spell would make the bear pause for a few precious moments, or trip it up. Hopefully that would be enough time for Reid to strike a blow, and if not, well, his bow was strung, and he now scrabbled for his quiver in the dark. He wouldn't run.

( Initially I thought of the Pokemon battle theme but I have to say, that song is quite epic. :3 )

Fear surged through her like the very blood in her veins as the lumbering animal fell to all fours and began to charge her. Maintaining her composure and hiding her terror Reid pulled a pale arm backward on her bow, ready to shoot, when a shout resonated just behind her just as the animal began to propell itself towards her. With her attention focused on the mad beast in front of her, Reid's narrow eyes observed strange dark chords flying towards the animal, wrapping around it and holding the frothing tyrant where it stood, ceasing its charge. Too intent on killing the beast to bother wasting the time allotted to her, she pull back on her bow and released two arrows at close range - both aimed at the bear's small dark eyes. To her resounding relief both her marks hit, thanks to a stillness of the beast and years of target practice. But nothing would have prepared her for the agonizing sound the animal made, now blinded by the arrows. Loud and unrelenting its cries ripped through the air like an unheard plea, unable to paw at the two slender arrows that had wedged deep into its eyes and, hopefully, damaging its brain.

Further abusing the precious time the dark chords had granted to her Reid, thinking quickly, bolted into her tent to retrieve her abandoned scimitar. Snatching it with her free hand, adrenaline rushed through her as she exited the small shelter and charged at the animal, letting out a terrible yell laced with her own fury as her brows furrowed. With one swift motion she raised the weapon above her head and plunged it down onto the beast's matted crown. Immediately jumping backward Reid watched as the dark chords vanished and the animal began to lumber forward in a drunken manner, its face disfigured with the arrows, her jeweled weapon sticking out from its head. Reid backed up swiftly, her feet now sinking into the sand as she observed the bear's awkward and powerful motions. It roared once again, clawing at its face to break off the arrows and charging blindly about, breathing heavily as it did so. The animal had not much longer to live yet was arguably as threatening as ever.

(Hahaha! A wild URSARING appears! :D)

Aniketos heard a pained cry from the bear just as he laid hands on his quiver, and he stood up to see the bear's eyes had been shot out. And Reid was running somewhere, no time to consider that for he had to sling his quiver over his back and retrieve his bow, taking a few moments to find it again in the dark.
He heard yet more roaring and cries, and when he stood up, an arrow knocked, he saw the bear charging around with Reid's scimitar lodged in it's skull. "What the fuck?" He couldn't help himself, the sight was simply so impossible. But there was no time to wonder at it- Reid was forced into backing up, leaving Aniketos to fend off the creature.
He drew back his arm and let an arrow fly- it lodged itself in the bear's side. Aniketos cursed himself for poor aim and sent another arrow into the beast's nose, and then, finally, one into its ear, where he was nearly certain that it would hit the animal's brain.
He didn't wait to find out whether the blow was fatal- now that some of his energy had returned, he held out his empty hand and sent the cords of shadow curling around the bear. These ones would be weaker, and he didn't think he could cast the spell again- he could only hope that it was enough.

((Usaring kabob. A lesser known Pokemon delicacy. :B ))

As Aniketos' arrow lodged itself deep into the animal's ear, no doubt piercing its brain, the beast let out a bizarre guttural sound and its movements began to slow as the seconds passed. And just a moment later that familiar dark ribbon of energy curled around its form and the beast was glued to the spot - immobile, nonthreatening, and nearing death. Reid watched from a ways away, heart pounding loudly in her chest as the animal released one final grunt. It was then that the haggard beast finally embraced oblivion, and its heavy head fell. Exhaling heavily Reid stood and stared at the animal for a moment - in truth it barely seemed to resemble one. Its eyes, both pierced by arrows. A scimitar planted upon its crown, and an arrow sticking out of its ear - the whole sight looked darkly comical and Reid couldn't help but chuckle from a few feet away, her face sporting a grin. She placed her hands upon her hips, as if admiring her bizarre handiwork much like a craftsman might. "Well that's one hell of a wake-up call. I've had worse though," she added as an afterthought, proceeding towards the corpse of the beast to retrieve her scimitar. Her pale hand gripped the hilt of the weapon, and bracing herself, pulled hard and swift at it to free it from the animal's head.

Successfully freeing her weapon Reid inspected the fluids that clung to the blade before snatching a piece of cloth from her person and cleaning it off, sporting no strong reaction to the sight of such a thing. This procedure wasn't exactly foreign to her. Once its metallic shine was visible Reid deemed it good enough and took once last glance at the animal before turning to Aniketos. "I never would have pegged you as a student of magic." She paused before adding, "Then again I never would have guessed you were a Politician, either. Where'd you pick that little trick up?" She inquired, a hint of curiosity ringing in her voice.

    (Delicious. :3)

Aniketos watched as finally, the bear expired, carried away the gentle embrace of death. He stood for a moment, his mind still trying to process what had just happened, his eyes wide. Finally, he managed to force out a word: "Damn." He let out a little laugh and a grin and made his way towards Reid, watching with a mild amusement as she pulled her scimitar from the bear's skull.
He couldn't help but admit a certain pride to himself- he had not killed it single-handedly but he was sure Reid wouldn't have been able to do it without him. It was the kind of story that he normally would tell people about, though he wouldn't be able to with this one due to the secret nature of his trip. Pity.
He found himself smiling stupidly at her; Gods, get a hold of yourself, you look like a fool, he thought, but he couldn't repress it. It took him a moment to comprehend her question and formulate a reply, but he managed to force out some words. "Was taught a few things as I was growing up. But I learned that spell in the army. Came in handy." He let out another little laugh again and said, "Sorry, I feel...euphoric." He drew in a deep breath and tried to look her in the eye, see something of the same feeling in her.
