The sun dropped beneath the horizon and, in its wake, night began to creep up like a prowling animal, with a coat of indigo and diamonds. The light of day went out with a last flare of colour, which was reflected in the water of the Navale Lake, rippling like flames across the water. A shape stood in the water against the apparitional blaze, a dark shape when viewed from behind, with his wavering ghost reflected in the lake. But, seen from the front, Aniketos was like a sheet of paper splashed with watercolours, from vermillion to crimson, his lips like a rose petal and his eyes like twin jumping flames. He watched the sun contemplatively, standing waist-deep in the water, completely naked, the light painting itself across his chest and arms, tangling golden in his hair. He could see why many thought this place was sacred- human noises were non-existent, only the night-insects humming in the forest and gentle rippling of water all around. And despite being surrounded by solitude, he didn't feel alone. The life of the forest around him seemed to cradle him like a great hand while no, it was not Reine, it was definitely nice. Not the same as a sea breeze and crowded streets, but good enough. He took another step into the water, frowning momentarily at the mud squishing between his toes, then sighing with contentment as the cool lake caressed the sweat and dust from his weary body. He wasn't accustomed to such dirt- he didn't usually have to move around so much, and when he did he had servants to fill a bath for him. Exercising often was one thing, riding horseback all day was another. But it had to be done. He had to travel alone because no one was to know of his business in Ashoka- if anyone was curious, he was with his mother, who was supposedly ill and unwilling to see visitors. And so, travelling alone, he had to cook his own meals, keep himself company and sleep under the stars. It reminded him of the times he'd had to carry messages for Auberon's Destiny, riding across Soto alone. He'd always hated it before but this sunset was nice, he liked this much of it, if not the solitude and exhaustion. But now, it'd hopefully be worth it. Those days...they were years ago now. Aniketos looked down at himself disparagingly. "I feel so old," he murmured, running hands across his chest and his face, checking for wrinkles and sagging. He was growing stubble but there was no use shaving now. No wrinkles yet. He did always worry. If he lost his good looks, he lost his power. His ability to manipulate others hinged upon that. He took another step into the lake, and the water slid up past his bellybutton. Tried to relax. He did not like being alone- better to be drinking with a group of friends, or with someone in bed. But no, his bed was a pile of blankets and his company was the chestnut steed grazing amongst the trees. He sighed, took another step into the water, and then began to hum to himself, a bawdy drinking song. He smiled to himself and sank himself deeper, before ducking under the water entirely, kicking off the bottom and swimming with his eyes closed. He hummed under the water and came up laughing to himself, floating on the surface with his arms spread out, a pale doll lying on a sunset. Edited by Aniketos, Sep 22 2011, 06:18 AM.

It didn't feel right, being here again. The soil was alien beneath her feet. It was thick, hard, and immobile - unlike the rolling sands of her beloved Ashoka. And the grass - it licked her boots with every step - roused such an indescribable stir of a memory. Like the echo of something once loved, now scorned. Yet still the flame-haired traveler trudged onward making her way through the dense vegetation and towering trees, knowing full well where she was headed and longing to turn back and go another way. Yet night was beginning to fall - it had been too late to change course. Reid had to find camp and settle for the evening whether she liked it or not, and the bank of the lake was her ultimate destination. Thrusting herself forward the unforgiving underbrush tugged and scraped at her leather trousers, as if clawing at her to turn back, yet she sliced through their protest with her loyal companion, Khalil, a scimitar that glittered with curious stones. Even in the light of the setting sun the colored jems flickered brightly, as if inside their forms lived a roaring fire. "Finally," her voice broke the eerie silence of the forest as she stepped into the clearing. Behind her a cool breeze flew past, causing her curls to fly about in a violent manner - one might say they almost looked like many restless snakes. Above her head the vibrant green of the treetops began to whisper among themselves as another push of wind slid past - the only sound in an otherwise vacant forest. Her lungs expanded slowly, siphoning the lake-scented air into her form as she allowed the scene to soak into her vision. And so it was - Navale Lake. It looked to be set on fire by the sun itself as the orange globe sank deeper and deeper below the horizon, boding the heavens above farewell as the emerging stars lulled it into slumber. She had been here twice before - once to say hello, and once to say goodbye. Ah, but how she had adored this place the first visit. It had been a place of great mystery and wonder to her then. Now it just another worn memory stored in the deep chasm of her memory to lay dormant. The woman folded her arms roughly, as if to defend herself from such thoughts. This was no time for contemplation - she had work to do. In a quick motion Reid broke her stance, bringing her hand her mouth and whistled loudly through her fingers . The echo of the shrill sound shattered across the lake and resounded throughout the area, and just as it cleared the soft thudding of hooves slowly built up in the distance. The redhead grinned at the sound as it grew louder still until finally the shape of a horse could be seen as it made its way through the forest path she had cut. "Well hurry up and get over here, Tobias. We've got a camp to set up and I don't wish to dally any longer than necessary," she spoke frankly, a bit of a snap in her voice. The horse was now standing near the sandy bank of the lake, where the grass ended and the sand began. He nudged Reid in the elbow softly at her words, and in return she simply patted him on the nose before gathering packages and items tied to the steed's back. It didn't take her that long to set up camp, in truth. All she needed was a proper tent and a fire pit, which she'd managed to dig easily enough . She made a point to stand upon the sand strewn shore, gazing back at her quaint little camp. Reid had picked a grassy spot just about ten feet away from the sand, and made a note to prop her tent up underneath a small cluster of trees - just in case it rained. The fire pit found its home just a few feet south of her tent - she'd even decorated the rim with large and small stones she'd scavenged from the lake. Smirking slightly at her handy work the woman retreated back to her tent and disappeared within. Merely seconds later it burst to the rims with light, and she exited holding what appeared to be an assembled fishing pole of sorts. "Time for dinner then," she murmured to Tobias who snorted in reply, proceeding to wander about the surrounding area, grazing here and there. The woman tossed off her boots before she went down to the stagnant, black waters of Navale lake. Not a ripple in sight - like a giant mirror it was. The colors of the sky seemed to bleed into it. She took a tentative step into the cool water, feeling the grainy sand conform to her pale feet as she walked a foot out into the shallows. It was there that she had finally noticed him. A male figure floating on the top of the water in the lake, as pale as the moon that would soon hang above them. How long has he been there? she wondered to herself, caught completely off guard. A bit unnerved by the sudden discovery that she was not the only person in the vicinity, Reid decided to leave the stranger be, and instead cast her lure into the depths of the lake, hoping to catch herself and Tobias a decent dinner. |

(:D Yay! Loved your intro~) The sky changed colours slowly- night encroached upon the remaining glow of daw, chewed on its edges to to produce a final flare of bloody red. Aniketos floated for a while, his mind drifting away. In Reine he was so often preoccupied with what he wanted next and how he'd achieve it that he didn't know what peace of mind was actually like. Well, this must be something like it, despite the nagging homesickness. He felt the coat of dust and warmth from the day's travelling dissolve. Goosebumps began to appear on his skin, a shiver ran through his body. "A fire would be nice right about now," he said out loud, thinking no one was there to listen, and plunged under the water, swimming strong as a fish back to the shore. He crawled out of the water, shivering as the air touched his naked flesh, and dried himself with one of the blankets he didn't think he'd need that night. He hummed to himself, and then stopped mid-melody when he looked down the shore. There was a woman there, standing in the water with a fishing rod. "What the-" When did she get there? For once in his life, the wily Aniketos was unsure what to do. At the very least, she didn't seem intent on killing him- she could have done that when he came out of the water. Did she want anything to do with him at all? Was there some sort of protocol for interactions between travellers that he'd somehow never heard of? Well, she had a fire, and while the night was warm, he was chilled by the water on his skin and too shivery to be bothered to make one by himself. He dressed hurriedly, concealed a knife in his boot just in case and walked tentatively in her direction, leaving his things behind just in case. When close enough, he said, "Ah...hello. Would you mind sharing your fire with a fellow traveller?" He felt an uncharacteristic blush rise in his cheeks- he was out of his depth here. In all the social situations he had known in Reine, nothing had ever been so...awkward as trying to introduce himself, unbidden, to a stranger, who may or may not have been watching him bathe for a while. He smiled sheepishly and pressed his hand to his thigh, closer to his knife, just in case. |

Reid's emerald eyes remained planted upon the still inky mirror that was Navale lake, opening her senses to any rippling water or sudden splashing in the distance near her bait. Yet so far it appeared that the wildlife within the lake either found her offering to be unappetizing or they had evolved beyond such trickery. Yet in the shallows she still stood, her pale feet peppered with grains of sand. She squirmed her toes, allowing the grains to rub against her skin, feeling the pressure of the water as her feet moved within it. How she'd missed the feel of water on her skin, the smell of it - lake or salt alike, and the sudden breezes that had once been so familiar to her. Eleven years later and a part of her still longed for the sea. And then, without much announcement, a sharp tug pulled her arm toward the left - she'd gotten a bite. Pulling the rod upward she soon began a small struggle between animal and man that ended in her victory. The fish splashed energetically in immense protest, its scale covered body glittering in the small bit of light that still tore through the sky. But Reid had no pity on it, for all she saw was food to fuel her until morning. She trudged back to shore with her now eerily still fish, rippling water irrupting around her as she did so, and after a moment or so gathering the tools for doing so, Reid began to prepare her freshly caught fish to be cooked upon the open fire. Yet just as she was about to set the fillets upon a fair-sized pan a strange man approached her - the one she had spotted earlier, floating upon the lake water. Her cat-like eyes glanced over him in curiosity, for he looked to be nothing of the traveling sort. His skin was unscathed, as pale as porcelain, his hair was short and only slightly ragged, and the fair bit of rogue that had irrupted upon his fair face seemed to indicate uncertainty to the worn traveler. Indeed, he appeared to be completely non-threatening. Although Reid was not about to label the young stranger as harmless just so soon. For all she knew, his fair appearance could very well quite indicate a noble birth and in the past she'd known such people of high social standing to have other ways of posing a threat. "I don't see why not," Reid replied, only to kneel next to the fire herself, holding the pan over the open flames. "I've only just caught dinner. If you're hungry you're welcome to some," she offered, trying to be polite and and welcoming compared to her usual reclusive and harsh demeanor. He did after all, at first sight, appear to be quite timid in nature. "Although, if I might ask, what brings you out here all on your own? You seem a bit...out of your element." And with that she glanced upwards, an eyebrow slightly raised in question. Edited by Reid, Sep 24 2011, 04:23 PM.

"Why...thank you." He glanced back at his supplies, left further back on the shore, and shrugged. The horse seemed quite content for now, he'd get them after he ate. His mouth curved into a wide smile and he sat cross-legged by the fire, across from her, breathing in the smell of cooking fish. This was obviously a different fish from what he usually had in Reine but still, it was a reminder of home. He grinned roguishly at her question. "Oh, I used to travel more- I used to be a military man, but it's been a while since then. I am from Reine, but I have, ah, business in Ashoka." He warmed his hands before the fire, watching for a reaction. He didn't want to disclose his identity, though he may as well tell her his origin- his accent made it clear enough. If she knew anything about the popular figures in Reine, she might know who he was- but he couldn't place her accent from what few words he heard her speak. She was quite lovely, he realized, with red hair that seemed to glow in the firelight, pale skin, cat-like eyes. He tilted his head thoughtfully and asked, "And may I inquire about your destination? I wasn't expecting to meet many on my journey." |

The strange newcomer appeared to be quite happy at Reid's permission for him to join her, sitting cross-legged across from her as the fish sizzled merrily upon the pan. She proceeded to poke the flesh with a stick, before flipping over several pieces. In a few minute's time they'd be nearly done and ready for consumption. But in the mean time she had to deal with this unnerving situation - at least it was for her. Reid was a stranger to having guests, let alone entertaining them. Especially strange guests, whom she knew next to nothing about. A part of her knew that she would not be sleeping a wink tonight and at the thought the corner of her mouth twitched into a slight frown. Although, oddly enough, the stranger soon began to speak vaguely of himself. Quite taken aback from the strange similarity that the two shared, she fumbled with a fillet as she attempted to flip it, and her expression appeared rather hardened after the formation of his words. Reid herself had served a brief stint in the Sotoan military as a young woman, working as a sailor that apprehended pirates in the waters near Reine. Her perception on the Sotoan military however, had turned immensely soured after a dismissal based on false grounds. Ah, and like she he had - as he stated- business in Ashoka. "I wouldn't have taken you for a military man," Reid stated, her eyes still gazing at the fish as she removed the pan from the crackling flames, setting it down on the cool grass nearby. Then again, she just might have. The people of the Sotoan military were not well known as athletes, but instead as schemers and plotters. Indeed, they did more back stabbing than actual fighting and an honorable person was quite rare. Even if such an honorable person did exist in such a setting they would undoubtedly turn sly if they wished to survive. And soon the inevitable question was posed. Where was she headed. At this she concealed her irritability and instead managed a short and informative reply. "I'm not quite sure where I'm headed quiet yet. I've got trading business all around Soto I'd like to clear up before heading back up north," she explained, and proceeded to pick what appeared to be a vibrant green leaf from her wild curls. "What's your name, by the by? What kind of business do you have in Ashoka?" She suddenly inquired, her eyes planted firmly upon the figure from across the fire. The question was posed partly out of curiosity, yet mostly due to the fact that Reid did not wish to remain in the company of a mystery. The phrase 'business' was a bit too general for her taste and if she was compliant enough to share her fire and her food, he might as well be compliant enough to admit to who he was, where he was going, and why he was going there. "I hope this won't be your first journey there. It's not exactly 'friendly' territory," she said curtly as she grabbed the pan that rested to her side. The food had more than likely cooled off by now. With a steady pale hand, Reid stuck it out to the side of the fire, gesturing for the young man to grab a piece of his dinner. For good measure she shook the pan a bit to get his attention and raised both her eyebrows, as if to ask 'well what are you waiting for.' Edited by Reid, Sep 24 2011, 10:22 PM.

Aniketos drew in the smell of the cooking fish and breathed it out with a contented sigh. The sun had fallen behind the horizon by now, and the stars were just beginning to appear. A lovely night in many ways, though Aniketos realized that this lady seemed tense. He couldn't blame her- he wasn't quite prepared to trust her entirely either. He was just good at appearing constantly at ease- it was a necessary skill. He laughed at her remark- many had said before that he didn't seem to belong in the military. Perhaps they thought he looked too youthful and innocent, not hardened and selfish like many. And no, he had not been much of a military man. There wasn't enough excitement and backstabbing- that's why he turned to politics. It was a story he couldn't tell now though. "Well, it's been several years since I was in Auberon's Destiny. You could say I never quite fit in there in any case." He did not elaborate why, hoping that she'd assume something positive about his character from that. At least they were heading in opposite directions- she didn't seem to like him at all. "I'm Arsenios," he said, using the alias he'd adopted when running messages so no one would guess at his noble heritage. "Trading business. Some of my partners in Ashoka are squabbling and want me as a mediator. Politics- it's worse than the army." He laughed at his own joke, realizing he must sound obnoxious to this woman. "I've been there a few times," he continued- this much was not a lie, "but mostly on the borders. I can take care of myself, but have you any advice?" He was then confronted with the problem of the fish. How was he supposed to eat it? He was used to utensils of some sort, even if they were crude wooden plates the like, but he didn't see any around. He hesitated and then, hoping he wasn't making a fool of himself, gingerly picked a slice of fish up with thumb and forefinger and maneuvered it to his mouth. It was delicious- filling after a long day of travelling. He swallowed and told her "This is marvellous, I cannot thank you enough," with a wide, sincere smile. |

Reid nodded at the mention of Auberon's Destiny. To her, the guild had always struck her as a bit stuffy and elitist. In fact most appeared to her that way. One of the many reasons she had chosen to remain solitary. "Well, it's probably for the best. Assuming you prefer your present lifestyle," she remarked casually, shrugging her shoulders a bit. Yet as her exterior remained cool her mind was churning. This fairly young man had once been a member of the Sotoan military, yet had left. For what reason? Her large eyes continued to watch from behind the firelight, her face lit up brightly as it crackled periodically. She watched him calmly, collecting her thoughts as he appeared to struggle with the concept of using his hands as utensils - another odd quirk she picked up on instantly. Most travelers she'd encountered found eating in such a manner second nature. This man was no traveler - perhaps instead someone of high rank, high connections, or wealth that had been summoned to or pushed into such an errand. And Reid was certainly not buying his story or his name. And he had the nerve to saunter into her camp, all sheepish and tentative. Yet she did not speak for quite some time, and instead nodded curtly at the compliment and thanks she received, growing ever the more wary of his presence. "Squabbling traders?" Reid finally inquired, arching an eyebrow in scrutiny of such a claim. "That's a bit odd, if I might say so. Can't they sort it out themselves? It must be high profile, if someone with a political mind is being summoned all the way from Soto to Ashoka. Do you dabble in politics, Arsenios? Well. Assuming that's truly what you go by." That being said, she abandoned her meal on the grassy ground below and rose to her feet. The veteran traveler then folded her arms in defiance and gazed down upon the young man. "Who is it that you truly are? For I've never met a traveler so dainty and so tentative in my decade of wandering, and I shall not be played as a fool. And certainly not in my own camp." With that she finished, her facial expression having hardened, yet her voice lacked anger. Instead it possessed a commanding and forceful tone. Indeed, she was quite the sight in front of the fire light - her tall elegant figure standing defiantly in front of him, her wild curls framing her oval face in a lion's mane of fire, her arms folded across her chest. |

He had managed to finish eating quickly, which turned out to be a blessing, because she had unravelled his little bundle of lies, and so elegantly too. Oh well, he thought, At least I was fed. Aniketos looked unfazed, not bothering to stand up to face her- he had expected this to happen sooner or later. He was much better at schemes if he had time to think them through. "Ah, you've found me out. Unfortunately, there isn't much truth I can give you. My business is of a more...private matter. Politics as you guessed. I applaud your intelligence, dear." He looked up at her, his eyes turned into golden embers by the dancing light of the flame. His pleasant smile faded, until he was left staring into the fire, speaking with a tone of frustration that was not directed at Reid. "I do what's best for the Sotoan people, but I can't tell because they don't know what's good for them. They know what the want in the short-term, but in the long-term? From the way the mob carries on, you'd think planning is a bad thing. You'd think that striving to be more is a bad thing. So no, I can't tell anybody about this mission, but I can tell you my name if you promise to keep it secret." Now he looked back at her, his lips curling into a slow smile, his eyes half-lidded and practically glowing from underneath long lashes. "Or you could kick me out. I don't blame you. I have exploited your hospitality and lied, though the second one was quite necessary. But I don't like leaving on bad terms." |

Ah, and so she had been right in her suspicions. Sometimes she considered her untrustworthy thinking to be her undoing, and yet it was times like these that she was grateful for her doubtful ways. She watch him from across the fire, eyes cold and unnerved as he spoke, explaining his deceitful ways to her. However mysterious the person, she had to applaud his loyalty to his mission - whatever it was. If he had been all too willing to spill his secrets she would have honestly thought far less of him, and in that sense he redeemed a bit of himself in her mind. And yet suddenly his simper appeared to fade as he continued to speak, his expression hardening as he spoke on, only for a small smile to curl up the corners of his full lips once again. "Exploited my hospitality? That you certainly have," Reid began, shifting her weight to her left leg. "Although it's the nature of a politician to scheme and withhold information and in that respect I'm sure you'll do swimmingly in the next election, whenever it is." Obviously the woman knew little of the political events of Soto, in spite of being a native. The life of a wanderer left her grossly out of touch with the events of elections and the like. She then proceeded to sit back down, and snatched the pan on which her meal lay. "And yet in spite of your shortcomings you're welcome to stay. Mostly because I'd rather keep such a trickster in my line of sight," Reid spoke openly, her eyebrows raised in a stern manner as she grabbed a piece of fish and ate hungrily, chewing swiftly as she did so. In a matter of a minute she had consumed her meal, and brushing her fingers on her knees wished she had caught more, for her stomach growled disobediently. "I'll tell you what, politician," she then began, a bit of fire behind her voice. "The only honest thing I'll expect from you this evening is your name. If you wish you can weave any sort of fireside story you wish about yourself, I won't think twice of it, and in the morning we'll part ways - you to Ashoka and I deeper into Soto." Her cat like eyes stared back, quite content in how she was handling such a person. She of course had the upper hand in the matter, and despite her bitter temper raging to burst through Reid calmed the inner hellion. Into the deepest corners of her mind she was quite pleased to have company, for loneliness had been stinging at her as she had left Ashoka to return to Soto, yet the stubborn parts of her psyche, so used to solitude, were protesting against such a notion and denying her longing for company. In truth, she had not shared a fire with another for nearly a few years. |

Standing over him, with the firelight twining in her red hair, this woman was like some sort of fire goddess, imposing and beautiful. Aniketos took the sight in without fear- he'd passed being afraid of what any one could do to him- but with a distinct pleasure. Not that he expected to have any luck here, but there was no harm in admiration. "The difference between me and a trickster is that I do not always use deceit to cause harm- I use it for the betterment of Soto." He watched her eat silently, thinking. It was clear that she wasn't concerned with Sotoan politics, and she didn't seem to be from Madrid, so what motive would she have for telling the world who she'd met by the lake? Whatever he did, he couldn't lose her vote because she had none- not that one vote would really matter in the end. He glanced back to check that his horse and possessions had ben left untouched and then turned his attention back to her. "I am Aniketos Hesperes of the Sotoan Council. Perhaps you've heard of me- they like to gossip about me in Reine. If so, then the stories you've heard are none too favourable and half of them are probably untrue." He laughed a little. "The things they come up with! I promise with all my heart that I never defiled those statues or had the party where everyone dressed up as priests and pantomimed certain profane rituals. However, the story about the pheasant is, unfortunately, entirely true." He gave her a bright smile and another breath of laughter. "It would be rude to force you to tell me your name, but I may as well ask." |

Aniketos Hesperes. The name certainly rang a bell yet Reid still couldn't quite place where she'd heard it before. Perhaps she'd heard it floating about the tavern she'd stayed at near the borders of Ashoka the week before. Indeed, she'd heard that name some point among the hushed whispers and crass dialogue of the natives as they sipped their mead and gossiped openly. Yet the vague murmurs she recollected were certainly most unflattering. She recalled the word ' deviant' used quite excessively as the fragile young man before her began to profusely dismiss some very colorful and outlandish rumors. The ragged woman raised her eyebrows at the mention of a pheasant, not entirely quite sure on the details of such a story - although quite frankly she didn't wish to know them either way. "Well. You must be quite the target of attention, judging by such...interesting rumors," She replied gruffly, sitting now cross-legged upon the soft grass below her. She then proceeded to wrap her cloak - a vibrant maroon- around her toned form, hoping to gather its warmth in her arms. "I'd hate to be you during election season - I'll say that much." She then shook her hair back and forth rather swiftly, a bit of debris falling from it as she did so. Reid had managed to run into a sand storm just a day away from Soto, to her dismay. Ever since the small grains had been spilling from her curls with every twitch of harsh movement - souvenirs from the land she christened home. Strangely enough, for a person of her gender, she appeared to have no hesitation in displaying her lack of pristine hygiene in front of Aniketos, who she noted had no marked fear or apprehension against her like most did. Indeed, in spite of her frank way of speaking and fiery temper he appeared to be quite pleasant in nature. His laugher chimed merrily across the dimmed forest, bringing warmth and friendliness to the vacant atmosphere. As if laughing back the creeping blackness, amused by its encroaching shadows. "Assuming that's your true name I suppose I'm in no position to withhold mine," the woman spoke matter-of-factly, a bit of a tired sigh in her voice, as if wishing to get such social nuances out of the way. Her expression seemed to mirror the same sternness that her voice did, a stark difference compared to her sudden bought of cold anger she had displayed just moments ago that had gotten to admit his short comings and reveal to her his identity - thus quelling the mystery that had so bothered her about him. At least, for the most part. "I'm called Reid - Terrowin to some and Malone to a few. Take your pick," she finished, her large eyes planted on him for a moment before glancing upwards. Thick clouds had migrated above them, blocking the light from both moon and stars so that the two were now surrounded by an inky darkness. Yet the fire burned fiercely in defiance of the darkness, holding back the shadows as they crept closer towards them still. |

(-bonk- Sorry, it's a bit short. x_x) "Political opponents always try to attribute every scandal and mystery to you somehow, that's why it happens." He grinned widely. "Election season is a circus, I tell you. That's how the statue rumours came about. Some man went about defiling statues of the gods and apparently it was my fault." He shrugged and watched her thoughtfully. She certainly would have interesting stories, better than a bit of gossip from the city. "Well, Reid," he said, "It's nice to meet you. Despite everything." He extended his hand delicately, for a handshake, and said. "AS I mentioned before, I haven't been very far into Ashoka. Is there anything I should know? I must admit, I feel a certain amount of trepidation, I'd like to arrive in Eldahar with all my limbs still attached." |

(That's alright - no worries. ;3) "Well they certainly cultivated a good enough rumor to smear your name," Reid reply, recalling the strange amount of Gods that Sotoans were known to worship. Indeed, in her travels Reid seemed to forget the odd peculiarities of her homeland, in particular the one regarding the odd amount of Gods that were worshiped. "Gods forbid they'd ever smear your good name and accuse you of defiling the door God's statue," she added, recalling her mother's overzealous interest in that one in particular and for a moment the echo of a smile nearly formed upon her chapped lips, yet it instantly fell into a hard line, her face stony once again. How the waves of time had eroded her. Aniketos however appeared to be as cordial as usual and proceeded to extend a pale, delicate hand towards her as a sign of good will. Ah, bodily contact with another being. This most certainly was going to be a long evening and not in a pleasurable manner of speaking. Attempting to mask a slightly unpleasant expression Reid begrudgingly extended her own pale hand and clasped his firmly, shaking it downwards towards the earth as she did so. Their hands, while both milky in shade, seemed to personify their own personal roads. Aniketos' appeared soft, his nails rather well minded, and with lack of any callous she could take note of. Reid's however had seen better times. Small bits of scar tissue appeared on the edge of her right thumb, as well as a long gash upon her palm; they felt slightly calloused to the touch. And while her nails were short small amounts of dirt had nestled snuggly underneath them - undetected stowaways on a never ending journey. Yet as soon as he'd extended his hand to be clasped she had already let go, resting her worn hands upon her knees as she sat cross-legged upon her spot on the soft dampened grass. They rested there like rusted axes - a reminder of battles past, ready and waiting in the shadow. "Ashoka is dangerous country - for anyone. Experienced traveler or otherwise," Reid began, gazing out past the lake as she spoke, digging about in the vaults of her memory. "The days are hot and dry, the nights will chill you to the bone, the sandstorms rip the dunes into the skies, and the jungles are merciless," she spoke, only for an odd light to flicker behind her green eyes. "And I wouldn't have it any other way." With that she planted her eyes back on the young politician, before opening her mouth again. "You'll need a horse if you don't already. Canteens, blankets, foodstuffs, and proper clothing. And stay away from the tribal people. They're hard to communicate with and difficult to befriend. That's how I got this," Reid stated, only to display her forearm freely to the young man. Etched into her pale skin lay thick, white scar tissue in the shape of a half-circle. Strange, how casually she seemed to display her scar - as if she regarded it as a badge of honor. But as quick as she displayed it she then withdrew it, hoping her mark would reveal how trying the northern desert could be. "Ah, but quite frankly I'd have to say you'd be better off outside in the wilds of the rolling dunes than anywhere near a place like Eldahar," Reid remarked, piecing together a patchwork quilt of elaborate guesswork. "I've heard and have stories from that place that would make your stomach turn and your bones shiver." She gazed at him with an intensity of some sort - whether it was a warning or a knowing gaze was another story. "But within its walls is where your destination lay, I wish you the best of luck, and I know you'll do the right thing. Not just for the Sotoan people, but the Ashokan as well," Reid finished finally, her eyes piercing as she stared across the firelight at the pale porcelain man. |

Aniketos laughed at her jest about the gods. "Now now, don't make fun of Tersiam, he is a very important god, for he not only controls the domain of doors but the passages between things- between stages of your life and stages of history. Even the passage between countries." He hardly paid attention to the feel of her hand- he'd talked with many sailors whose hands were admirably rough, it meant little to him. He was more interested in her face- the smile that had flickered across it and the hard look that stayed put now. He liked that smile, it made her prettier- couldn't she do it again? Smiling, as if to set an example, he listened to her description of Ashoka. Oh, this would be...fun. He stopped himself from sighing. How much he'd prefer to be in Reine right now, with all the rumours and scandal. "Yes, I have a horse, it is over there. Perhaps I should go get him soon." He gestured behind him, checked briefly to make sure that everything was safe. "Well, it is to Eldahar I must go, and for a while I am to stay there. Thank you for your sound advice, it eases my fear. I wouldn't know how to repay you." Her final words seemed something like a threat, though Aniketos merely went on smiling. "My work is for Ashokan interests as well. I believe it will benefit traders between Ashoka and Soto as well. I believe I will redeem myself in your eyes in time. Now, I should go get my things, before something terrible happens." He got up and made his way down the shore, lifting his bags onto the horse's back again and untying him, leading across the sand. He looked up at the dark, cloudy sky, humming that same bawdy song to himself as he went. He continued to hum as he tied up the horse, and murmured a few words absentmindedly as he removed the bags. "...and she was seldom clean..." He soon sat down again, holding his hands up to the fire for warmth against the cooling night. |

Reid didn't seem to react visibly to Aniketos' irruption of sparkling laughter and instead interpreted his remarks as purely serious comments. "All the same, it's pretty ridiculous. If I had a gold piece for every time a house wife prayed to the God of bread mold that her loaf would keep for the week I daresay I'd have just enough wealth to keep myself alive for the rest of my days." She paused for a moment, before adding, "I suppose Tersiam isn't as useless as I'd thought." With that she proceeded to extend her rough hands towards the fire, warming them gradually. She listened attentively to his words as she did so, although said nothing. Her thoughts had been planted upon the Ashokan ruler, Orion, for quite some time - ever since the mention of Etrutia had sprung to her ears. If ever a man could make her blood boil in rage, it was Orion and while she was not well versed in politics she cared enough about her self-proclaimed homeland to know of what a psychopath that vicious thing was. In the corner of her mind she truly wished that her new acquaintance was deeply adept in his craft, for reasoning with the mad would certainly be quite the challenge. She nodded curtly as he left to gather his things, along with his steed. The appearance of the animal soon sparked the remembrance of her own horse, yet no worry lined her face at the thought of where Tobias had wandered off to. For he always came back when he wished to, or when she called him. In the mean time she decided to tend to the fire, for she noticed it had stripped most of the small bits of lumber down to ashen sticks. Rising from her seat upon the soft earth, she took it upon herself to gather dried branches from the canopies below as Aniketos quietly sang to himself before taking his place beside the now dimming fire once again. It took but a few minutes of rustling in the edge of the thick forest, but she finally managed to scavenge so decent sized tree branches. With great ease and strength she gathered them up in her arms - fairly thick they were in size, and no longer than 6 feet long. The muscular woman walked a few steps towards the fire before letting them fall to her feet, and snatched her jeweled scimitar from her hip. Gripping it comfortably in her right hand, with the left upon the lumber she proceeded to chop at the knotted branches. The sharp snap of metal on wood echoed throughout the area as she continued to work, a fair bit of sweat dripping from her furrowed brow as her pale arm continued to swing with precision and power until the wood she had dragged from the forest formed neat logs. Stepping back to admire her handy work, she tossed her scimitar into the air in one swift motion - it spiraled in place with deadly grace, the metal and colors of the jems shining brightly - before she caught it expertly, her eyes never moving from the logs. Sheathing the weapon once more, Reid then proceeded to toss a few onto the fire. Instantly the starving flames began to devour their new feast and the orange light soon doubled in its power, casting long shadows on the two of them as she reclaimed her throne upon the earth below. |

Aniketos watched her with curiousity- chopping wood with a scimitar? Wouldn't that dull the blade? Though perhaps it was out of necessity, he realized. Who was he to berate her? Getting her angry would certainly be of no use at this stage. And at least he got a warm fire out of it. He watched her sit again, tilting his head in thought. "Do you believe in the gods? You talk about them with such distaste, and yet even the god of bread mold, Yersos, is important because our bread is important. Is it such a sin to pray that we be fed?" He hadn't ever really prayed to Yersos himself, but he knew that many of the poorer classes did. He didn't pray much because he didn't want for much, but there had been once or twice where he'd found it in himself to pray for the sake of some one else...that flame of compassion had jumped into existence and flickered about for a bit, but always went out. He didn't know how much praying accomplished anyway- it was just something he'd been taught to do by his minimally committed mother. This woman...he wondered. |

Reid continued to soak in the warmth of the fresh fire when the question was posed. Taken aback at the bold inquiry she raised her eyebrow. Reid cared little to discuss the topic of religion yet Aniketos seemed interested in his interpretation of her past spoken words. "I never said it was a sin to pray that one is fed, nor did I openly berate any of the Gods," she began, prodding the flames with a nearby stick with great force. Her statement before had been in jest, although once again her hardened exterior had not allowed it to translate. She had traveled too far for too long and her friendly mannerisms had managed to disintegrate along the way. " I don't care about the Gods. I care about the people of the nations," she said simply. Which was essentially true. Reid had never had a personal interest in religion or the Gods and what they represented to her personally. She had instead adopted a 'live in the moment' mentality throughout her life; fighting for what was right because it was right, rather than fighting for what was right because the Gods deemed it to be. People were too quick to consume themselves in them, or so Reid had always thought. Especially in Soto. "Any way, there are so many Gods for so many specific things. It seems to cheapen the notion of what a God is, when there are so many. Doesn't it?" she asked with a tone of genuine curiosity, glancing upwards as she prodded the flames once again. "What about you, Aniketos. Are you a religious man, or do the Gods not concern someone with such a deviant reputation?" She smirked ever so slightly at the last question, waiting for whatever reply he might come up with. |

A thoughtful moment passed- Aniketos rested his chin in his hand and watched the fire, experiencing one of those rare moments where he seriously considered the conversation rather than making some innuendo out of it. "Perhaps, though I have no less respect for the gods despite their abundance." He looked up at her, finally, saying, "But they seem closer to us for that, they have faults. Whereas some of the other religions, where they worship fewer, people revere them so much that they are forever in fear, and they forget to live." Of course, there were some who took even the Sotoan gods too seriously, restraining their actions until their existence could hardly be called a life at all. Aniketos did not understand it- what was living without enjoyment? But nevermind, his words had come to a convenient place for him- "They do not know the satisfaction of a good meal, they do not understand the beauty of passion." He sat up straighter, lifting his head so he could fix his shining, firelight gaze on Reid. "Should really deny ourselves these things?" He smiled, leaned forward intently, his somewhat over-large shirt sliding off his shoulder to reveal his skin, the muscles of his neck and arm. The firelight stained him, turned him gold, so he seemed a statue of a god himself. |

Reid soaked in Aniketos' words for a moment yet didn't reply. But Aniketos did have a solid point - people certainly forgot to live. Yet she didn't voice agreement on this for she had said her part and didn't care to drag the topic along any longer than need be. To her the Gods would always a subject of indifference - at least in terms of her belief or lack of belief in them. Just her luck she'd been raised in Soto, where religious devotion ran rampant more often than not and the expectation to conform to certain social expectations were immense. A flicker of a smile played on her lips when she recalled informing her mother that she had no plans to join any of the guilds and the outrage that followed such a statement. Although either way Reid thought herself much better off, thank you very much. The young man continued to speak of the topic however, much to her dismay, and she proceeded to rest her chin in the palm of her hand - an elbow propped up upon her knee as she gazed upon the glassy stretch of dark water just past his left shoulder. A faint breeze stirred along the shore line spraying the scent of the lake water about. It did not compare to the salty spray of the ocean yet stirred pleasant memories all the same - the vast open waters, the creaking of the ship, the screeching of gulls above her. It had been some time since she'd last ventured onto a proper ship and sailed across the horizon. And as much as she loved Ashoka and its people a part of her heart longed to be reunited with the deep waters of the Sedokai once more. But her thoughts were shattered by the sound of Aniketo's voice, and soon her sight snapped back to him, vaguely wondering if he'd noticed her lack of attentiveness yet was too worn to care much either way. His eyes seemed wide with firelight and his stare eerie. Taken aback her brow furrowed slightly yet she continued to rest her chin in her palm, her long fingers resting on her cheek. "Of course not," she replied, a bit of a snap in her voice. "Although I'd say one shouldn't get carried away with such nonsense either," Reid went on, taking note of the peculiar body language Aniketos seemed to have adapted. His shirt was askew, revealing his shoulder and a charming smile was painted upon his lips. She didn't speak for a moment and instead appeared to be studying the fellow. Indeed, Reid had encountered many a character in her day but in terms of relentless charm and flamboyance this guys certainly was something else. "Careful. You might catch a cold," she noted, nodding to his shoulder before getting to her feet. Her legs were beginning to feel restlessly stagnant and the new change in posture was a welcome change. Exhaling sharply, she rested her hands on her hips, gazing out at the lake once again. "So, tell me. Where were you from again?" |

It hadn't worked- oh well. He felt like he was flinging all his charms at a brick wall without much success. So he just laughed lightly and pulled up his shirt like he hadn't noticed- if he left it down he'd probably get bitten by mosquitoes anyways. This one is more resilient than Shrista was, he thought, and he was lost for a moment in sweet recollection, Although she was loosened by the bite of a spider. Reid got up and so he was left to contemplate it, and he found himself swirling his finger in the sand absent-mindedly, as if it were skin. Reid's words pulled him back to earth, and he twisted around to look up at her, a shape almost lost in the dark save for the flicker of firelight in her hair, dancing on her back. "I'm from Reine," he said, "born and bred." He sat up straighter with pride, but decided against elaborating on why he thought Reine was the best city in the world- this woman seemed aggravated enough. "And yourself?" "Reine you say?" Reid asked, a clear tone of excitement in her voice as her it floated through the fire-lit campsite. Her face had begun to glow with an inner light and a distinct grin had bloomed across her pale face. Indeed, the transformation from cold and fiery to passionate and glowing was deeply disturbing and probably an indication that he should get as far away from her as possible for certainly nothing good would come of this. However she went on, an eerily lovely smile plastered across her face as she did so. "Wonderful place. Quite frankly I have no idea why Madrid is Soto's capital. Reine is just so much more..." she hung on the word for a moment before finally finding it, "...alive." Which was true. The hustle and bustle of the ports of Reine were always active, traders passed through often, fishermen came in and out of the harbors all day and the constant scent of salted air was both invigorating and lovely. During her sailing days that city had taken as much of her heart as the dangerous land of Ashoka had presently. "The piracy certainly is a problem though," she remarked, her expression now contorting at the thought, her brow furrowed with a bit of tell-tale anger. For Reid honestly loathed pirates - deeply and stubbornly, for many a reason. "That's how I got this," she remarked and exposed an forearm to him - a thick scar in the shape of a half-circle had been etched into it. "Raided a pirate ship just near the waters of Reine. They got one of my best men and sliced me open pretty good. But I cornered him on the bowsprit when he had his guard down," she remarked a bit darkly, a glimmer of a smirk playing upon her lips. This of course, was not the true story behind the scar, but it sure as hell made for a good fireside tale. "I didn't grown up in a place as large as Reine," remarked the curly haired firecracker proceeded to stroll towards the sands, and kneeled down slightly to snatch up a smooth stone from the light grains below her feet. She continued to speak as she did so, tossing it in her palm a few times. "I grew up in one of those smaller fishing villages in the north west of Soto," Reid replied, crouching slightly only to propel the stone straight along the water, watching as it skipped thrice before it plummeted into the lake water. "Quite a bit of traffic from travelers as well," she remarked, recalling the strange desert folk that often came down to trade with her mother and the origin of her curious and adventurous spirit. |

Aniketos grinned widely- yet another person who agreed with him! He had never been able to understand why Madrid was the capital of Soto when Reine was such an important city to the country's livelihood. "I think so too!" he exclaimed, turning around so he could see Reid better. "There's so many reasons why, one being that it is actually easier to get to Reine from the north, despite the fact that it's not in a central position. By boat, you see...though I'm sure you know that." He realized he was falling into the arguments he used when debating the subject- the ease of getting to Reine, its position as the economic centre of Soto, its potential as a military base- et cetera, et cetera. "It's a pity also that the people there are restricted from voting for Councillors. Well, it's an outrage really. Something that should be changed." One of the things I'd like to change. That old flame in his chest was kindled again; just when he wondered why he was still in politics, what on earth he was aiming for, the little fire would leap back into life with a conversation like this. People had given up on the idea of making Soto greater, and they had no confidence in Reine...but they had potential, and Reine was growing, and it was essential that Reine become the centre of Soto, the people had to see this. "Yes, well, it's a problem that could be fixed with a bit more funding. Some law enforce-" he cut off at the sight of her scar, a shiver running up his back. "Gods above." He stood up and leaned over to get a better look, and then grimaced. He had am orbid desire to touch the scar but realized it would be rude. "Stories such as that only strengthen my desire to stamp down on those scum." He watched her pick up a stone and skipped it, still standing, unsure what to do with his hands. After a pause, he decided to sit back down within the circle of firelight, the warmth banishing his goosebumps. "I'm afraid I haven't been in the northwest as much, mostly in Reine and Madrid...and the south when I was in the military. I carried messages a few times but..." He trailed off and, after a moment, said, "And yet, wherever I go in Soto, I find something more to love about her." He stared out across the water, which looked like a lake of ink the darkness. He had fallen into that contemplative state again, his charming smile replaced by a distant stare. |

((Sorry if it's a bit short. I'm so drained today. x_x)) "It truly is a civic crime," Reid agreed, her expression shifting into that of concern - something it usually could not achieve. "Perhaps a more...progressive politician would sway their minds in due time?" she hinted, her voice rising in question as a small smile curling up the corner of her lip. In truth it looked more like a smirk but for Reid it was a huge improvement of her character to even pull that out of her hat. "As far as the piracy goes I'm sure the military will continue to be the go-to force to quell that beast of an issue. That's all I did during my time in the military. Sailing around the borders apprehending pirates - although to be fair I was usually in Reine more often than not." Her voice had since died down and her eyes gazed past the horizon. "Although...I do miss it some days," Reid admitted aloud. "More of the sailing than anything else. The spray of the water, shrieking gulls head, the scent of the ocean...You can't get more alive than that." Shrugging off such sentiments she then turned to face Aniketos, watching him intently. As young as he was he did appear to truly care for Soto with a kind of rare passion that the old myths were based on. Beneath that sly smile and burning charisma lay an honest spirit - something far too rare to slight. And it was in that moment that Aniketos redeemed himself in her mind. "I don't think I've witnessed such animated passion in quite the while," Reid remarked, taking note of the young man's distant stare. "I suppose I'll have to wish you luck once next election comes. You've seemed to have found your place in life quite nicely." And with that another genuine smile appeared on the hardened traveler's unkempt visage. Edited by Reid, Oct 3 2011, 02:26 PM.

(No probs. <3 Your reply was nice in any case.) "If only other politicians were so progressive," he sighed, "I'm sure I'll convince them that extending the vote is the best course of action some day...if only with the appeal of increasing their voter base." If only they could see what it would mean- a state led not by oppressive leaders, but by the people. A state that would bring them happiness. He nodded at Reid's description, closing his eyes to imagine it. There had been times, when he was young, when his father would come home (an occurrence so rare that he had forgotten what Kyrillos looked like but a year after his death), he would get a friend from the Kraken's Rage to take him out on a boat, to spend the day in the sea-spray and sun. The first few times he'd become awfully sick, but he'd grown to enjoy it after that, although he knew that this was no life for him. When was the last time I went out on the sea? He must have been seventeen, soon before his father died. He frowned and was silent for a time, unsure of what to say, before looking over to her and witnessing a genuine smile from the hardened traveller. He grinned back impulsively. "Thank you, Reid," he said, making sure to use her name. "The fact that we must be re-elected every year is ever so stressful, but I've been lucky so far." He winked, though he wasn't sure if she'd it in the dark, and carried on, "Sometimes they nearly turn against me over some supposed scandal or other but they always seem to fail to find someone...sane." He laughed at the joke. "Like the whole statue affair...I still have people asking me about that." He shrugged and said, "Though I don't suppose gossip and politics are terribly interesting to you. It can get to be so petty. Though it's quite fun to watch others running around like headless chickens over what Lady Horsebum said about Sir Ticklish at Lord Festering's party." That tinkling laugh again, followed by a mischievous grin. |
