SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

((I had no idea really where to go with this thread, so I hope you at least have something to work off of. If not, I can easily change any of it.))

The streets of the capitol were winding down with their daily business as the sun neared the western horizon. People were making their way back home, having had their fill of shopping of gossip, at least for this day. A different breed of people was coming out of the woodwork now, moving not to the shops and vendors but the inns and taverns. One person in particular made her way down the road a dark street draped in a long black robe with the hood thrown back to reveal her cool blue gaze and dark hair.

She walked with a confidence through shady streets that few women would have, except perhaps those who made their living in the company of the men who also walked these streets at night. She had no fear, and yet wore no weapons openly. Perhaps this was because she was known to some of the tavern owners, and a few of them called their greetings as she walked by, knowing that while she didn’t drink and ate very little, she had money to spare and tended to pay well. This was her city after all, in some small way, and she did what she could to help the local businessmen, at least those that were kind to her in return.

Tonight she only gave them each in turn the smallest of smiles as she kept on her way. It wasn’t food or drink that she was interested in, though on a fine night such as this several of the outdoor tables looked inviting. Tonight there was a different merchant that she sought, a wax candlemaker who made the longest lasting and highest quality candles in all the world, at least that’s what he tended to tell anyone who would listen. Sphynx herself, knowledgeable in the ways of fire and many of its vessels, didn’t agree nor did she disagree. Her own preference for this candlemaker had more to do with the fact that he still made plain candles in few colors when the latest trend among many nobles was purchasing candles of the most garish colors with scents that filled whole rooms with fumes so thick that it made breathing difficult. In such matters, Sphynx was a woman of simple tastes, plain colors, and absolutely no scent whatsoever. That was why this particular merchant was her favorite, despite whatever claims he spoke.

She entered the small shop and began her browsing at once, giving the owner just the smallest glance. He knew very well by now that she preferred to shop in peace without whatever recommendations or new products that he may have to show her. She picked out a few pieces as she went, candles in solid colors black, blue, and red; simple to serve her purpose of light. She wasn’t one that really needed candles for light, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t enjoy having them around. The more fire in a room the better, in her opinion, and she went on picking out her pieces as the door opened in closed a few more times, letting several people out and only a few in. Soon the shop would close, but not before a good customer such as herself had finished her shopping.

((Is cool. Hope you can get something going... Is difficult to get two quite independent chars started. Like you, I can change stuff if needed. Hope its okay.))

Sometimes you knew it was going to be a good day from the moment you woke up. Today was not one of those days. Luckily all of her major plans seemed to be in a lull at the moment, otherwise she would have seriously had to worry about what quite would go wrong, as it was it had just been an unusual day. But there was a good side, she guessed, with all the magical power she was gathering it was good to know that she was still human, and it seemed like a hassle to employ someone to stand behind her and, at her greatest moment, whisper in her ear that she was, after all, mortal. That was taking it too far, she was acutely aware of her limitations, and that while she had gained great power, she was paying a price, or would have to in a few years.

As such she felt in major need of some time to relax, and as such naturally had flew to Madrid. There were ways to relax in Ashoka, but she didn't want a whore, so Soto it was. Of course, this day being what it was she had collided head first with a bird on the flight here. But when she arrived her first port of call was a bath house. She got in just before closing, and was glad that it meant she at least had some privacy. It was a smaller place, a little off the beaten track and she loved it, letting her body melt in the hot waters and feeling all the overworked muscles in her body unwind. It was bliss, pure and simple.

There was one thing that took her notice as she was getting out, and that was the candles. She wasn't one for some of the stupid styles which occasionally came into fashion, but she did need light, and was currently decking out a small villa she had decided she wanted in Ashoka. She doubted Orion would mind, he had a palace full of harlot's after all, and she didn't like going there for fear of what she might catch just from breathing the air. One of the few things that was missing was candles in the amount that would be needed, and these ones had taken her fancy. So she asked where they came from, and that led her to a candle shop which, apparently, made the highest quality candles in the world.

She was unarmed as she walked down the street, and dressed in a loose, light blue fabric that seemed to flow along with her augmented with a belt with a silver buckle which looked like two rose, their stems entwining. She realized it was probably not wise to wear something like that out at this time, but if she was attacked then she could kill them and take their stuff, so she didn't worry. If they were too many, or stronger than her she would have to outrun them, and then pretend she was sweet and innocent. She didn't like that act, but had done it with some success for short periods of time before. Looking as she did it probably would not be too difficult to get away with, she did not look at all like a battle hardened mass killer, save for that certain deadness in the eyes which gave away a murderer.

She got to the candle shop shortly before it closed, and browsed absent mindedly, on occasion stopping to pick out something, which then held itself in midair at her side as she continued, one hand hovering a short distance from the candles to hold them there.

Despite the fact she had taken time to make sure she knew who all of the councilors were, she did not recognize Sphynx at first, due to the fact she was not really paying attention. But as she was paying, she noticed. She watched her, and without thinking opened the blue tear in reality she could open to hold her purchase, closing whilst her gaze was still locked on the necromancer.

She had heard a lot about her, in her times, both from idle rumor and as the result of intent prying, but had never seen her. Apowerful mage and necromancer, a close ally of the man who almost tore the world asunder and yet now a Councillor of Soto. How did she do it? What kind of person was she?

Her eyes still locked on the woman, she exited the shop and waited in the street, watching the entrance like a hawk as she waited for her to exit, wanting to talk to her, but not sure how. She wasn't sure, partly she saw her as a rival, but she was also aware that she did have a certain, begrudging respect for her, or at least the version of her she had heard about. Maybe she was a little afraid?

She waited, and watched. She did not realize it, but her concentration caused a variety of bugs and insects from in the area to gather, all of them focused on the entrance.

"Good evening, Councillor" she said to herself slowly. That would serve as a start. As soon as Sphynx left, that is what she would say. And hope that she didn't look to much like an assassin.

Her eyes continued scanning the shelves as she maneuvered around the small shop. The smell of the beeswax was comforting in the way that it reminded her of fire and warmth. Though she would never admit it, for fear the shop owner would use her words to his advantage and possibly cause an unfair gain in shares of the candle market in the large city, this was her absolute favorite shop in all of Madrid. She was drawing close to finishing up, having already made a decent selection and likely having picked out several more than she actually needed. One last look among the various sizes of dark toned sticks, and she should be about finished. As her eyes moved across that final shelf, the hair on the back of her neck stood up, and with it came the feeling that she was being watched.

Her movements remained casual as she finished her browsing, though her guard had been raised. When she finally turned, ready to make her way to the counter to pay, she threw her gaze around the small room, as if making one last visual sweep of the merchandise. At first no one stood out to her as very obviously watching her, which unnerved her just a bit more. She was no stranger to being watched, but her instincts and time spent studying human nature could sometimes alert her to the spy, and if she did get the feeling she usually could at least pinpoint the watcher; it was surprising how many of them were just too obvious about it.

This woman was no exception. It had taken her a moment, partially because she wasn’t actually looking for a female. There was also the small matter that just because someone looks when another turns to them, doesn’t make them a spy. It’s when they don’t look away, even when walking through a door and leaving a shop, that one’s suspicions get roused. It had only been for a brief couple of seconds as the other patron of the shop left the counter and exited that Sphynx was even looking at her, but the entire time she felt as though the woman’s eyes were staring, locked on herself in a way that was atypical for two strangers who’s paths crossed in a store. Maybe it was just her position that drew the woman’s eye, maybe it was something else altogether.

Perhaps she was simply being paranoid; it wasn’t the first time and likely wouldn’t be the last. She had too much baggage in her past to not walk with one eye looking behind her. From what she had seen of the woman in those brief seconds, nothing really stood out as ‘spy’ or ‘assassin,’ but she of all people knew that looks could be deceiving. Internally rolling her eyes at herself, she waved such thoughts away; if the other woman was anything more than just a customer to this shop, then Sphynx figured she would find out soon enough. But until then, she would continue on with her evening without dwelling on the ‘what if’s;’ that had never really been her style.

She made small talk with the proprietor of the establishment for a few moments as she paid for her candles, making arrangements to have them delivered to her office in the Guildhall. She hadn’t purchased such a great quantity that she was unable to carry them herself, but she knew that he tended to throw in an extra candle or two if he brought them by, always saying it was a mistake but that she should simply keep the extra. The candle maker, on the other hand, knew that her assistant had been directed to tip him well any time he came by with a delivery, so the arrangement suited the both of them well.

Sphynx exited the shop then, appearing much the same as she had when she’d gone in, except for the small smile that now rested on her lips. Though she normally wasn’t the type of woman who enjoyed shopping like many of the noblewomen that she’d met did, there was something about such trivial, material objects, candles, books, etc, that she rather enjoyed. At the stoop of the shop her eyes swept the street in both directions, more out of habit for observing her surroundings than anything else. With the day drawing to its close, there were few people about, so the other woman standing in the street and looking directly at the candle shop she had just exited stood out more than just a bit. Wasn’t that the same woman who had been staring before? She honestly couldn’t remember enough details from the brief moment earlier to be certain it was, but she had her suspicions. She did not appear to be any threat however, at least she wasn’t waving a weapon around or making threats, which was good enough. If she did mean Sphynx harm, well she’d find that out soon enough. Instead of turning back down the street the way she’d come, she walked right up to the other woman, her small smile not exactly fading, but not exactly friendly either.

“Might I help you with something?” Her tone didn’t necessarily seem helpful, but rather questioning, as if there was more to the question than was really asked.

“Might I help you with something?” the necromancer asked her. Now, that was something difficult to reply to. Because technically, the answer was no, there was not anything in specific that Sophia wanted from this woman. She just wanted to meet her, to know who she was, and she wanted to do that whilst avoiding explaining who she was if that was at all possible, because that would just lead to a bunch of political talk that, honestly, she wasn't that good at or even especially interested in. If it came to it she could always use the name Rachel de Mattiano, who now was a oddly vacant but still sort of around the high ranked guild member of Deadly Silence. She could work with that if pushed.

"I guess you could say that I was curious" Sophia replied "Although I realize this has probably made me look a little suspicious" her head titled slightly to one side for a moment as a gesture of half apology, but not enough for it to look like she actually felt sorry at all, more was just doing so because apparently it was what you were meant to do. "I am not one in habit of making useless conversation, but I guess you could say I was curious. About you, specifically". She didn't back down just because Sphynx had walked right up to her.

"Partly about how you ended up in council after... Places beforehand" it seemed polite not to mention either of the positions in Morrim, although she supposed it wouldn't be to bad to talk about how she had revived Isra. "On another angle entirely I guess I find it weird you get along with Tsuki. I met him and became severely tempted to throttle him" she left out any details of why and how, although she was quite willing to believe that she would be asked. The elf wasn't the most social. She suddenly became very afraid that the necromancer would do the same mental gymnastics that made her feel foolish and stupid as he did.

"I guess, generally you could say I just wanted to know who the councilor was, seeing as her name gets mentioned to me a bit. Frankly your reputation makes me believe I am going to have more time for you than some other of your fellow councilors. And if I have to add more, necromancy is something I find curious to"

"Is that enough?" she asked, her voice dull and empty "Or do I need to find a better way of doing it?"

Sphynx waited for a reply as patiently as she ever was, meaning with only a slightly annoyed look on her face and her arms crossed. She was a little curious about who this woman was and why she seemed to be somewhat transfixed on herself, but then again it could simply be that she was just another crazy lady hoping that being nice to the councilwoman would actually get her something in exchange; power, respect, influence with the council. Some had tried in the past to get such things from the council woman, but they all found it to be impossible, at least from this one. She did what was best for her country and that was it, no matter how much gold she was offered.

She could feel her own head tilt to the side when a reply did come, as it was not at all what she’d expected, and she rather liked that. This woman seemed straightforward and honest; traits that seemed to be sadly lacking in many people. The woman’s words only widened the small smile that had been on her face, and by the time the other had finished saying what she wanted to say, Sphynx couldn’t help the small laugh that followed. It was the rarest of things, but she found that she liked this woman who stood before her.

“Well I sincerely hope that you did not, in fact, ‘throttle,’ as you put it, Tsuki. That would make any conversation between us most unpleasant and over quite quickly.” The last time she had seen Tsuki he appeared to be in perfect health, which was a necessity given his condition, though it was entirely possible that this woman had met him since the last time she herself had seen him. If anything had happened to the elf, then Sphynx was more than willing to show the other more than a thing or two about necromancy right here in the streets of the city.

“Come, I think I should like to have dinner with you.” With a brief glance around them, she motioned to a tavern just down the streets. It wasn’t the closest, but it was the brightest at this time of night and most likely the cleanest. “What say you? I shall anser your questions, and more if you have them, but not here in the street; over dinner.” She had no problem with having such a conversation in the street, but it was the time of day that she normally ate dinner, and she had a feeling that their conversation would be over as soon as she answered the woman’s questions, without giving her a chance to ask her own, unless there was something else to keep the woman here. And she had plenty that she wanted to know about the type of person who would be so forward with her, as so few people did so, and they were the people that annoyed her the most. “The choice is yours. Walk away now or eat with me and get the answers you want.” There was of course the chance that the woman would simply walk away, but that was just fine with Sphynx. It would be just another conversation ended on her terms.

She laughed. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Sophia could not tell if she was being laughed at or with. She bit her lip ever so slightly. Luckily it seemed that whatever it meant, it was something good. That was a relief at least.

"No, I didn't hurt him" Sophia replied, her demeanor loosening up "I merely felt like it". It was true, she didn't actually hurt him. Technically. It didn't seem like a good idea to say 'I tied him to a tree'. Well, it could be if she wanted to go on the line of goading Sphynx into showing her what she could do, but frankly that sounded a lot of effort, and Sophia had come to Madrid to relax. Just because she had spied an opportunity it did not mean she was going to change the fundamental reason for her visit.

"Dinner sounds nice" she responded quickly to the invitation. Well, if anything was going to say that they had a chance of learning something, it was that. "Lead the way" she let the necromancer go first, falling into step beside her. It seemed reasonable, it was her city and it was her offer. "So, do you dine with everyone who talks to you in the street, or am I a special case?" she remarked dryly, although didn't mean it as a slight, more as an observation that counted for humor, from Sophia at least. "Usually people only offer to eat with me if there is somebody they really would like to see dead" she assumed the mention of death wouldn't get any particular reaction from a necromancer, of all people, and it told Sphynx what she did. If she choose to believe she meant guild, then that was on her. Although she supposed she sort of was now... Well, she was loosely affiliated with. "Not that I wouldn't be willing to listen to an offer if you had one" she added, although that was more to see know the councillors enemies where than it was to make any money. With strained Sotoan- Ashokan relations any little thing could end up being relevant, and Sophia liked to be in a position to know more than either side, if possible. It was her way of making u for the fact that, chances are, there would be plenty of smarter people around, so she needed to be better informed.

For now, Sophia thought it was best to keep who she was hidden, or at least not be forthcoming with that information. Truth be told she felt more kinship with this woman she had just met than Orion, although she felt she had more in common with a potted plant than Orion so it wasn't saying much. If she could get along for now that would be good. When it came to necromancy and the dead, Sphynx was Queen. And that could be useful information for her to have in some of the things she wanted to achieve.

“Splendid.” Whether this was in response to the woman’s words about not having hurt Tsuki or her acceptance of the dinner invitation was a bit ambiguous. Perhaps it was in regards to both of those things. Either way Sphynx started down the street towards the place she’d motioned to before, the flickering lights outside of it seeming even more inviting now as she thought of the food inside. Perhaps they would revisit the topic of Tsuki later.

“You are most definitely a special case.” Sphynx actually grinned at the other woman as she assured her that this was most unusual. “Few talk to me in so straight forward a manner, but I see little value in other, more drawn out and pointless manners of speaking.” If this woman had approached her with fear or respect like she tended to get, muttering compliments over and over, then the conversation would be over already. But this woman had acted in an exact opposite manner from what she expected and she asked questions that few dared to ask, and the combination of these things actually gave Sphynx a desire to answer them.

She raised an eyebrow at the woman’s words about typically only dining with others when they wanted someone dead. Was that supposed to be an obvious hint that she was some type of murderer or assassin? Or was it a slip of the tongue? She doubted the latter, as few people in the profession made such slipups, but it also told her that she was probably perfectly safe. If the assassin did want her dead, than she wouldn’t approach her so directly in the street. So there was the possibility that the woman was in Deadly Silence, but there were plenty of freelance artists out there as well, and at this point there was nothing telling her that the woman was even Sotoan. “I appreciate the offer, but I usually handle my problems myself.” Perhaps that was the reason this woman had approached her; certain assassins did well by selecting one particular client in high places, the type that had plenty of enemies and plenty of money. Sphynx wanted it to be perfectly clear that she had no use of such a person.

The tavern to which she led them wasn’t the seediest of places, which was probably why it was only about half full of people at this time of night. That was the first thing that she noticed as she led them inside, selecting a booth off to one side of the room. She settled into one side of the booth and her eyes scanned the room for the nearest barmaid, whom she flagged down with a mere wave of a hand. The maid came to their table almost at once, apparently rather bored at the slowness of the night and glad for something to do that wasn’t wiping up tables and doing dishes.

“A bottle of your best wine, bread and jam to start, and I’ll have the shepard’s pie.” A bottle of wine; Sphynx herself didn’t drink often or in very large quantities, but getting a full bottle for them to share seemed like the polite thing to do. If the woman didn’t like wine or even wanted something stronger, she was more than welcome to order something else for herself. She turned to her guest then, giving her the opportunity to order whatever food and drink she wanted for herself. “My treat, of course.”

“So have you a name, or shall I simply call you Lady?” She had waited just long enough for the maid to get both of their orders and walk away before she asked the question that was at the top of her own list for the woman across from her. At this point, she wouldn’t be surprised if the other did refuse to give up her name, and after being told that the other was an assassin, she doubted that she could take whatever name she was given as truth. So why not just give her a fake one to begin with? At least then they would both be on even footing with knowing that the name was fake.

It seemed Sphynx shared some traits with herself, namely the distaste to long, drawn out meandering prose. It was something Sophia avoided partly because she could not always keep it, and she only tended to employ it when hiding something or trying to confuse someone, usually by admitting the truth amidst a lot of stuff she didn't actually understand. Or, more likely she would speak bluntly but make sure it was a complete lie, perhaps with a grain of truth so she wasn't technically wrong...

"I guess I am flattered" Sophia responded, slightly dryly, when told that she was something of a rare example "I did not expect to find someone who wanted to talk in such a manner on the council, if I am honest. At least not if I hadn't done my research" she shrugged a little. Whether Sphynx took that to mean Sophia had reason to look into who she was since she got onto the council, or from before was up to her. Seeing as Sophia had mentioned what happened before, she supposed it wouldn't be difficult to understand that Sophia had looked into her not recently, but during the Dark Conquest. It seemed natural then, Sophia had been on both sides for almost all the conflict. "And you like to sort your own mess out, impressive. I had thought as much, Isra's return seems to speak as such" she spoke, but did not continue the topic yet, she had things to ask, but she would get to them.

She grew silent as they entered the tavern, and dropped into step behind Sphynx, her light footsteps practically inaudible, even though the place was quiet. She took her seat when prompted and barely had time to think before Spyhynx ordered. "I'll join in you in the wine, if you don't mind" she spoke, seeing as that part was obvious. If someone else was buying the best wine in the house she wanted in. Much better that than use up some of the old Mogul's, her personal favorite thing she had looted in the string of tomb raiding and the like she undertook when first taking office in Ashoka.

"As for food... I'll have the soup, and then" she paused, and thought, wondering if this would sent any sort of message. Probably not. She also thought over what else she had to do today. A couple of hours training, at least. So she probably wanted something to give her plenty of energy. She immediately wondered what they had in the way of spicy food. "The fish" she decided based on nothing in particular, and watched the order be taken away.

"You can call me that if you like" she responded to Sphynx's question, turning back to her "But most people just call me Sophia" she thought it would just get overly messy to lie, and she didn't exactly spell out who she was. There was more than one Sophia in the world, it wasn't as if it meant she had to be who she was. Besides, she was running about all over the place in Ashoka, so if Sphynx had heard any of that she might be disinclined to believe she could be here. And if she did connect the dots? Well, then she would just have to hope they could remain civil. It didn't occur to her, but there was also the possibility it could have been seen as a sort of joke.

"So, I guess that makes it my turn to ask a question, does it not?" she ran her hand across her forehead, brushing the hair to one side and out of her face.
