SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

WHAT IS ELENLOND?

Elenlond is an original free-form medieval fantasy RPG set on the continent of Soare and the Scattered Isles, which are located to the south in the Sea of Diverging Waters. The four chief nations of the western side of the world—Ashoka in northern Soare, Soto in western Soare, Morrim in eastern Soare, and Angkar, the largest of the Scattered Isles—continue to experience growth and prosperity since the fall of the Mianorite gods, although power struggles within the countries—or outside of them—continue to ensue.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

Nevneni's shoulders relaxed when the vampire's eyes were out of sight. With the shape of the lion's face now distinguished, she began to smooth out the curves all over its body. "No, I don't think I will sleep. But there's...lots of reasons."
Her mind was plagued- the memories seeped in and swarmed about her. There was no sleep like this, especially not when there was someone else around. She paused her knife and closed her eyes for a moment, breathing in deep to steady herself. She saw now her mother, still young for her race and her father, the wrinkles that fell about his face. The way they still loved each other, laughed at each other's jokes. Her heart ached with missing them but there was no going back now.
She let out a long sigh and resumed carving. "You can watch if you really want to," she said, "though I'm close to finished, I think."
She looked up at him and laughed a little- a rare occurrence. "No, sand is not very nice." She hesitated and joked softly, "I've always preferred the taste of dirt."
Smiling to herself, she carved lines to represent the hairs of the lion's mane. He was alright, she realized, and she began to feel that perhaps this Vorkael was genuinely kind, not pretending so he could take his next meal.

    (Woo page two! :D)

He laid there for a moment or two longer, then sat up, back to the fire.
    "Actually, dirt is less gritty..."
The vampire laughed himself, glancing over at her again.
Vorkael kept looking at her then, for a few more moments, thinking. Had she indirectly said no to teaching him? He could watch, yet she was nearly done? Would she not carve another? Otherwise, he'd have no way to learn.
Well, there was her timidity. It seemed to be getting better, though of course that was the blood at work.

"What are you going to do with all of tonight to go through, then?"The man knew he himself would have to go hunting soon. A small lizard and snake were not much to go on and it had been over an hour already.
In fact, he knew a few places back along his route where some antelope and sheep had been. They could have gone somewhere else, but certainly not at night. It was cold, and getting colder; they'd be sleeping.
He sighed and sat up straighter. Maybe he could bring her some food so that she could not possibly run out for some time. He'd hate for harm to befall her right after having met him - it seemed to happen eerily often, regardless even of how he'd felt about them.

(If anyone ever gets the reference in this they get $28,323,232,938 in imaginary currency.)

Nevneni laughed at his comment, her eyes closed and her nose scrunched up in her smile. It had been a while since she laughed like that- the last time was when she had watched a donkey, staggering with wine given to it by its drunken owner, attempting to eat figs. The thought made her giggle to herself, before she regained her sensibility and quieted herself.
In response to Vorkael's question, she chewed her lip in thought. Usually, when she knew she couldn't sleep, she walked or prepared herbs, and if not that, she whittled. But it seemed rude to simply walk away and she had no herbs or oils that needed shredding or decanting. She had one piece of wood left, though she was reluctant to use it right away. "I don't know," she admitted. She put down her carving and searched through her bag, just in case, and discovered some rags to be cut into bandages, but nothing else. She shrugged and resumed carving, saying softly, mostly to herself, "I'll figure something out."
She was absorbed in her work for a time, engrossed in the details on the lion's mane. After a minute or two, she remembered her etiquette and asked suddenly, "And you?"

(*flail* sorry about the crapsy reply)

Vorkael watched her carving the details into the lion's mane, then stared off into the inky darkness as he waited patiently for her to talk again, because she had set a trend of doing such things.
Sure enough, a minute later she questioned him about what he planned on doing.
"Well, I was thinking I could bring you some antelope or sheep, so you'll have no chance o' runnin' out. There are other animals as well. I'd just have to see what I found."
He turned around to face the fire, and crossed his legs. Then his eyes were on her face again and he asked, "Does that sound good?"
He thought another moment, then added, "Oh, and if you have another vial or two, I could always give ya more blood. I'll have plenty once I've fed on something larger."

(Crapsy is a good word. :D)

Nevneni looked up at him curiously. "I can't eat an entire sheep," she said simply. There was no way to preserve it without salt, and she hated to see life go to waste. She'd been taught to pray over every animal she ate, offering thanks for its suffering. Waste was not part of her way. Though, at the mention of more blood, she sat up straighter and tilted her head. "You would?" She thought, chewing her lip. "Hunt only for yourself, I think I will look around here for food." She gestured at the trees around her. "Surely there's something."
He was surprisingly generous, for a race so often reputed for its cruelty and coldness. He was more generous than most living beings. Perhaps time does that to a person, she thought, idly running her thumb over the carving, checking for lumps.

(Yeah I thought of it on the spot xD)

"Well, I was thinking you could cure the meat and perhaps the hide, but that would take too long, looking at it now...and yes, there are rats, snakes and lizards at the very least. Might be a wild cat hiding somewhere, I haven't been here long enough to know."
Then again, any prey he caught would just be drained of blood...food for the vultures, he supposed.
Vorkael sighed and stood up, leaving his shirt. He didn't feel like putting it on - besides, it felt nicer having it off.
"Well...I'm going now. I'll see you after the hunt."

A little less than two hours later he came back, blood around his mouth and splattered - in some places quite heavily - on his face and torso. Nodding to Nevneni, he washed himself off, then reclined by the fire. He'd happened to miss some blood high on his left cheek.
The man had indeed found an antelope, drained it, and left it out in the open. Of course his ambush had startled the rest of the herd and sent them scampering off. Some would probably die for various reasons.
The vampire took in a breath and asked shortly, "So, ya have some vials?"

The bigger the meal, the longer its effects. And one of them was being a little more curt, more short-tempered. One reason why he had human-walked most of the way back here, instead of going at a faster speed.
He'd be of a normal human temperature for some time though, which he honestly found nicer. It was bittersweet; but more of the sweet than the bitter. He focused on the happy memories of human life, making sure to keep the taint of future happenings out.
Vorkael let a breath out slowly, then looked back to the female half-elf, his grey eyes edged by something that hadn't been there when she'd first seen them. Knowing this, he only looked at her for a few moments, then looked away, into the warm, dancing flames of the campfire.

    (GENIUS!!!)

Nevneni watched him go- walking out into the darkness and then disappearing entirely. Now sure that he was gone, she began to move about, feeling more like herself. She hummed as she picked dates off some of the trees, eating a few in between strains of the melody. The rest she put into a bag, to save for later. She added more kindling to the fire, finished the carving of the lion and tearing up the rags into bandages, all while singing what words she remembered from a song about a fox and the moon. She was glad to be alone, and for a time she simply sat by the fire and luxuriated in the warmth.
It was then that Vorkael returned. She watched him wash himself and then come back, her head tilted and her lips slightly pursed in thought. When he asked for the vials, she over three without a word, and then sat with her knees close to her chest to watch the spectacle. After a few moments of thought, she asked, "Does it hurt? Can you feel pain?" People never talked about that when they discussed vampires, and she became more and more accustomed to the realization that perhaps vampires won't so beastly after all.

Vorkael took them, also without a word, and bit into his wrist, filling them up one by one.
Her questions came in the middle of the second and he paused, letting the wound heal as he thought. For a moment he had believed she meant emotionally, as he'd just been avoiding the thought of some memories.
Maybe she did mean emotionally, too, but it didn't really matter.
"Of course we can. We're more desensitized to it though. This biting into my wrist doesn't really hurt; partially because I'm a vampire and therefore biting is my nature, but also because of the higher pain tolerance."

He looked at her again, his eyes softer now, but farther away. He filled the third vial and after a moment, spoke again.
"Of course we can feel pain," he murmured. "We are still human at our core. We generally have heightened emotions and senses, and are stronger and faster in body, but still human. We're also able to turn emotion off at any point..."
The man glanced to her again, let out a breath and looked away, once again into the fire. Almost as an afterthought, he gave her back the vials, and then continued.
"And that can happen sometimes when we feed anyways, especially the more blood there is...I have fallen a few times into that oblivion, and all it leads you to is mass murder because the urges are the only thing left. I hated it. I've worked hard...hard to..."

Vorkael faltered now, pushed his palms into the sand, almost glaring now into the flames.
"I've worked for decades to curb the impulses, the temptations, the added nature of the vampire, and...it still plagues me. Too much."
The vampire curled his fingers tightly, the gritting noise it made of the sands rubbing together and against his skin audible to his ears, and not to her's unless her hearing was enhanced. He crossed his legs in front of him, laying his hands flat, palms down, on his knees.
And he waited for her response - a tightening in his stomach, in his throat - and he found himself afraid. Afraid of another rejection.
Brows pushed together, he stared into the fire, refusing to look over at her pale, brown-eyed face now.

She took one of the vials, felt the glass warmed by the blood, and watched him from under her hair. People didn't often talk like this to her- unlacing themselves to show the bare emotion underneath. There were people who, dying, confessed; they spoke of love, they spoke of cheating, drinking, murder, they spoke of home until they were drained of secrets. But beyond that, she was in the background, a creature in the corners and shadows.
Nevneni couldn't bring herself to look at him properly, though she knew she should. There was much more he didn't say. She could tell because she also curbed her mouth, even when the secrets pressed against the wall of her lips. Even when she was in agony with the need to scream. She thought it and saw him, from behind that curtain of hair, twisting silently with the same sensation.
What could she say that would mean anything? With all those dying people, she'd held their clammy hands silently, then watched them breathe out. With dying people, there was no social obligation, she only had to listen. But he waited for an answer.
Her mouth opened and then ran of its own accord. "A man told me, on his deathbed, that he had never been able to leave the bottle. He always had a flask with him, hidden in his boot sometimes because life was too much to face. And there was a woman who said that she had taken many men because it made her feel alive. Many who confessed to being in love secretly, addicted but never speaking the words." She faltered, her lips forming words that didn't come out immediately, then burst out in a rush. "A woman who felt she couldn't keep on with life. Wanted to die." Her next words came out as a whisper, inaudible over the crackling of the fire: "Die, die."
Nevneni sighed deeply and shook her head, as if to clear it. "What I mean...I think that people have their vices."
She hadn't talked so much to another person in so long. Her throat closed suddenly, and no more words came out. She bit her lip and looked down.

There was a reason people didn't do such things often...he felt exposed, bared. He wanted to curl up. But instead he forced himself to lie back in the sand, feeling the grains adhere to his back because it was still slightly damp.
He uncrossed his legs and bent them, keeping them away from the fire, then laid his arms out above his head. Breathe in, breathe out.
Vorkael had really never gotten out of the habit of breathing...many didn't. But it wasn't necessary. It still worked, still filled your chest or emptied it, of course, but it wasn't required for living anymore.
He had indeed heard the two words whispered, but like the rest he just took it in, silent and thinking.

The man knew she must have clamped up, but he didn't look at Nevneni still, not even with only a simple turn of the head to grant him a view.
He took another minute to reply, but he did get to it.
"I know...but not only are my human faults still there, but now this too."
Shaking his head, his stretched his arms way out, flexing them to get the little kinks out.
After another moment he thought of the lion.
"Hey...did you finish that lion statuette?"
Just like that, he felt closer to her. But who wouldn't when you shared such things and bared yourself? Vampires were never seen as vulnerable, and yet here he was...

For a time, Nevneni was still wordless, her throat clenching around something unspeakable. Her lips twitched and finally she voiced a few words. "But no one can blame you- for being a vampire." It was all she could say- there was nothing else.
She picked up the little lion in one hand- it had been sitting next to her- and put it beside Vorkael's prostrate form silently. She was quite proud of it- how a slip of the blade could become a creature. She thought about how not all mistakes were unfixable- they were sometimes blessings in disguise. Sighing, she pulled her legs back up to her chest and rested her head on her knees, watching him. Perhaps, she, in turn, was supposed to show something of herself, but the thoughts hurt too much to voice to a stranger. But she remembered, always remembered, and now found herself plunging into thoughts of autumn and the falling of leaves like the graces that dropped from her being. She thought and could not think of anything to say- her eyes became glazed and she watched the vampire unseeingly.

He had nodded, knowing she was right - but he had become grateful. His view of the world had been changed, not necessarily for the better, but to reflect the truth.
The man sat up a few minutes after she had set the lion next to him. Picking it up, he ran his fingers over it. It was quite smooth, no parts that could come off in splinters, prowling across his warm hands.
Looking over at her, he realized they were only two feet away. Not a big deal for him, but he was somewhat surprised.
Dismissing it with a blink of his eyes, he took the little wooden carving and put it in his shirt, rolling it up. He bent his knees in front of him and put his forearms on his knees, clasping his hands together.

After another few moments Vorkael looked to her face again.
"Nevneni," he said, then paused for half a second, realizing it was the first time he'd actually said her name out loud. "Do you think we could travel together? I know...it's probably a lot to ask. But I have vampire blood for those you heal, atleast."
He was about to continue, but he decided against it. He'd rather not lose the opportunity by saying something too sentimental that could be misinterpreted as anything besides basic friendliness and longing for company.

Nevneni saw her sisters in the leaves, throwing handfuls at each other and calling her over. She remembered that smell- the dead leaves of maple, oak, beech; so different from the smoke from the fire and the cool breeze coming in from the desert. She closed her eyes, losing herself in the thought; the crunch of leaves in her hands, the laughs of her sisters, the elation, the youth.
Vorkael's voice snapped her back to the earth. She jumped a little and stared at him, wide-eyed, questioning. No one had ever travelled with her- she had always been alone, walking with only her steps and her thoughts to keep her company.
Paranoia set in- he was a vampire, she was prey. But if he wanted to eat me, he could do so now, she thought. The offer of his blood was tempting- how funny that she should be thinking that- but what incentive did she have? She reached for her staff and ran her fingers over the pattern of ivy carved into the wood, processing the offer.
"Why would you want to?" she finally asked, after a few minutes. She forced her face into blankness, her eyes into dullness, and she turned to look at him.

His eyes drifted to her staff as she reached for it, then went back to her.
So it appeared that he'd need to use those reasons anyways. He couldn't have come up with a lie even if he'd wanted to.
"I..." he started, trailed off, then crossed his legs once again, his hands on his ankles as he thought. His eyes found the sand.
"I want company. It doesn't look like I'll be finding either Beinv or Yuna any time soon, and I haven't had a traveling companion or friend for...more than five years. I may be immortal, but time still passes the same for me as it used to, or nearly so. I cannot slow down because I could still die tomorrow."

Vorkael's eyes rose to her's and he continued talking.
"And you're the first person in some time that's even accepted me for who I am. So you're certainly the best person for traveling with."
Then he looked away and chuckled quietly.
    "Pretty close to not happening."
After a few seconds, he thought of another reason, but he definitely didn't want to scare her off with that. Maybe it wouldn't, but the risk was too high. And when he had stayed...stuck around the person, then they hadn't seemed to run into bad things.
The vampire thought about that - it was like he was a factor, once introduced, led to either good or bad luck. If kept in place, good luck would ensue. If subtracted from the situation...he laughed at himself. If there was such a thing as fate, it was quite bipolar around those he met.

Stories of those who had achieved immortality often spoke of the loneliness that followed- how passing years cursed the immortal to watch others die, one by one, untile there was nothing else. Nevneni was reminded of this, and a spark of sympathy fell into her chest.
She was not prone to loneliness, at least not often. But there had been times that she wished there was someone who would actually listen. But she was invisible and sometimes hated for being a mutt. To be a vampire would mean almost total ostracism. She thought for a moment that maybe people's opinions of vampires could be changed.
She chewed on her bottom lip, considering. She'd have to get something silver, maybe a necklace, at the next marketplace they visited, just in case. Until then, she'd have to keep her knife close. The irony of these thoughts nearly made her laugh.
"Alright then," she said finally, looking at him. "We'll see how it goes."
She thought for a time and then asked, "Where to go next?"

Waiting patiently for her to reply, he sat staring into the flames. When she'd asked her question he thought for another few minutes, his mind feeling sluggish.
"Well...I haven't seen much of the coast, except down around Reine, and near the mountains...I haven't actually been to most of the major cities."
    He paused, scratching his chin.
"I assume you already have an idea, but we could go to Eldahar, or along the coast for now. They're the closest options."
Silence again for a few minutes, and then he stood up.

"You should get silver jewelry. More than one piece, mind you. If I'm that lost, it doesn't matter where I bite. I'd suggest a necklace and bracelets for your wrists as well. Maybe even a belt, or anklets? I'm not that old so...not much is required to harm me."
He blinked then amended what he had said quickly.
    "By belt I didn't mean..."
He sighed. "I just mean you should have as much silver on you as possible. If silver wasn't expensive at higher quantities I'd tell you to get clothes with silver embedded into it, or even a very light set of silver armour. By the way, do you get paid for healing others?"

It was as if he'd read her mind, telling her to get some silver. She struggled to hide her surprised before replying, "Well...I just came from Eldahar, but I suppose it's the only place." She hesitated, having lost the sentence to thought. "To get silver that is. But I get paid."
She reached into her bag and pulled out a green cloth purse, decorated with a rainbow of glass beads. She tipped the coins into her hand and counted them out. There were just enough, she calculated, for a small silver necklace, if she didn't get any food. It would be difficult, but she had that sack of dates, hopefully it would last a few days.
"Yes, Eldahar would be good." She sighed a little and dumped the coins back into the purse and put it away. Then a problem occurred to her- "You can't travel during the day, can you?"

Vorkael watched her count out her money. He had some too, and he was hoping he could maybe pay for a bracelet. It depended on the prices there, and if she would even accept that; he didn't really know.
    "No, I can't."
He crouched to pick up his shirt, unwrapping the lion from it and then putting it on.
"I'll be back in a few minutes," he told her, vamp speeding off to the area he'd been before, by the small pool of water.

Behind the boulder was his longbow, quiver and a belt with two small pouches and a small knife hanging off of it. He ripped the sleeves off of his shirt and used them for padding the carving into one of the pouches, then strapped the belt around his waist. Picking up the unstrung longbow and quiver in each hand, he headed back towards her.
He set them down, and himself, on the opposite side of the fire from her.
"I know most of the way, but you probably do too, seeing as you came from there. And if we are going to actually travel together...well, you'd need to travel at night too. By the way, I need to be underground when I sleep, so you have no need of worrying about yourself when you go to sleep. I also burn in the sun, so..."

Vorkael left it at that, then took a bow string out of the other pouch at his belt, running his fingers along it to test for weakness. The other pouch contained sharp stone or iron arrow heads as well, so that's why he'd needed the padding.
The thing was, he knew fairly well how to carve. It was rough-hewn, but good enough for arrows. She was much better at it though, and he had hoped to learn.
Well, practice would make perfect, right? And he had forever.

Nevneni watched him speed off- he was a blur between the trees, barely visible, leaving the undergrowth shaking in his wake. In a matter of seconds, he was back, bow and quiver in hand. She looked at these weapons with interest- her father had tried to teach her archery once but her arms were weak, and never seemed to get better.
She sat silently, resting her chin on her knee and watching him test his materials for a moment before replying.
    "I can do that."
She took to staring into the fire, eyes glazed, remembering her feeble attempts to shoot the painted target her father had made. She remembered how her mother had laughed at how the arrows skidded across the grass, and for a time Nevneni had been frustrated. But now, she would have given anything to be able to laugh with her mother again, even if it was due to her own embarrassment.
After a few minutes, she got up and began to add more kindling to the failing fire. When it had flared up again, bright and warm, she sat down and peered at Vorkael. "How will you get underground here?"

Vorkael nodded. That was good. He was traveling with her for company mostly, after all. To be stuck on completely different schedules would not help him get that.
Once he saw Nevneni retreat into her own thoughts, he let himself as well. The bow string was left unattended in his fingers. He chose to remember good things this time. His human life before, the good times, his childhood most of all. The hard work of tending the farm. Steady, assured, knowing what he was capable of and what he was not, and learning more every day.

The spring and summer...autumn had once been his favourite season, but now it was summer, for the heat. Sighing, he then noticed the woman getting up to refuel the fire. He watched her for a few moments, then as she sat and asked him a question.
For a minute he didn't answer. A thought occurred to him - night time was when people were sleeping, and shops closed. Once they actually got into the city, she'd either have to switch back to a daytime schedule, or simply go on less sleep. As far as he could tell, though, she didn't need that. She had already been up for atleast twenty hours now. He shook his head. None of his concern. She could take care of herself well enough, he was sure.

"Well, I have to either find a cave, or burrow under the sand."
He smiled wryly. "I'm sure it paints a strange picture, a person digging into the sand and covering themselves with it."
The man chuckled, shaking his head slightly.
"It is what it is. I start to bleed too, if I stay aboveground. Out of my ears and nose mainly."
He looked back down at the string, then put it away and tested another. He had yet to use the first one more than a few times, so the rest should be fine, but there was no harm in checking. He did have nothing better to do at the moment, after all.

Nevneni imagined him burrowing into the sand and laughed. "Won't you be uncomfortable?" She imagined sand in her nose and mouth and grimaced, but then started to laugh.
She remembered her sisters in the leaves- falling into the piles, the smell that surrounded her, the way they crackled about her. Her sisters covering her up, blocking out the world, until she found herself in a cocoon. It had been peaceful, despite the crunching of the leaves, and her sisters had to pull her out because she stayed there too long.
Her laughter subsided; she now sat there with a weary smile, playing idly with a stick, drawing lines in the sand.
After a time, she asked, "How long will it take you to bury yourself?" She looked up at the sky, checking for the moon. Night would be over in a few hours, and when Vorkael was vulnerable, she could finally trust the situation enough to sleep. The first time she'd slept in the same area as someone else in a long time. And he was a man...this was not what she'd expected.

"A bit, but I'm used to it by now," he murmured, glancing over at her as she laughed. It brought a smile to his lips, but he let that go after a few moments, absorbed in thoughts of the coming day, and what the future held now, so different than before he'd met her.
Vorkael scooted a little closer to the fire and watched her drawing in the sand, grey eyes following the slow movements. It left him feeling sleepy, almost trance-like, and he snapped out of it as she spoke.
"Oh, not long at all. Thirty minutes if I take my time."

He followed her gaze, knowing night would be over soon. He moved until he was directly next to the fire, and raised his hands to heat them more too, in anticipation of the cold he would feel when he went to ground. It would slowly creep in on him, the warmth slipping away like tendrils, sliding off of his skin.
"I can go to ground now. I'm tired, and it will give you more time to sleep too. Surely you will be tired soon, as well, if you aren't already."
The man looked over to her again, watching her face. After a few moments he sighed and looked back into the flames, staring into nothing as he awaited her reply.

Nevneni stopped drawing mid-line and looked up at him. "If that's what you'd like to do." She shrugged and started to draw spirals in the sand, and was reminded of the snails at home. Her sisters had been disgusted by them, while she let the crawl all over her hands, fascinated by the fact that they lived. A sentiment hard for her to put into words, but it now applied to this vampire. She had seen many dead, closed their eyes and covered their faces with sheets. But he was somewhere in between, without the flow of blood or the need to breathe, but he still felt pain, he still thought and he still seemed to savour the warmth of the fire. The world was full of wonders.
She peered up at him, and asked, "Do you need help?"
The way he had to hide himself away under the sand reminded her of the way the snails sealed themselves to rocks, trees, fenceposts, anything when the air became dry again. This made her smile- the more she looked, the more similarities she found. She suppressed a giggle, biting her lip to keep it down.

(Given permission for tiny bit of powerplay up ahead xD)

Vorkael nodded, glancing over to her once again, then to the patterns in the sand. The hand holding the stick seemed pale; by the firelight it was warmly toned of course, but under the moon it had looked far more grey. Same with her face; it was vaguely orange-hued.
He looked away, and didn't look again when she spoke.
"Well...no. It's fine. I'll go get a small meal and bury myself by that pond."
The vampire paused, then looked to his bow and quiver, then put a hand on the belt as well.

"Normally I'd take these with me, but it's difficult and risky with the bow. Would you put them with your things?"
He waited a moment for her answer and smiled in response.
"Good day then," he said, and abruptly got up and sped off, leaving the bow and quiver. This time he nabbed a large rat, draining it and throwing the carcass out from under the trees again.
Finished that, he crouched and began digging into the sand, disliking the feeling of the grit getting under his fingernails. Dawn was not as far as he'd thought, and he sped the process, mind entirely focused on his task.

She took the bow and quiver and watched him go, a flash speeding about the lake, before putting them beside her pack. Tiredness had overcome her, but she was afraid of sleeping until she was sure that the vampire was asleep himself. She rested her chin on her knees and stared ahead, glassy-eyed, at the dancing flames. Thoughts flowed through her slowly, sweetly, like treacle- her mother teaching her about poultices, the benefits of Hypericum tea, how to calm a terrified patient. Her father helping her pull back the bowstring, the arrows skittering hopelessly across the grass.
Before long, Vorkael was back, and she watched him dig for a while with mild interest. Dawn would be coming soon- the moon had disappeared from sight, leaving the stars as the only source of light. She began to unpack some light blankets, them both down on the sand beside the fire. There was no point in using one to cover herself- it would be warm soon enough. She laid down on her stomach and continued to watch the vampire digging at the sand- the last thing she'd have guessed she'd ever get to watch a vampire do. The thought made her laugh softly to herself again, and this time she was too tired to hide it from him.
