Angkar's Fallen Lord

|
In the days following his assassination, Razarod fled Angkar. He could see the writing on the wall: He was not welcome. As much as it hurt him to do so, he was forced to abandon his country. That morning he had stolen a boat in Zedrin before word had even gotten out who the next king was. He would have loved to stay and find out, but it wasn't safe. Whoever wanted him dead had been serious enough to hire the best, and they had been serious enough to fabricate a body that had fooled everyone. As far as everyone in Angkar was concerned, Razarod Evermore was dead. And had he made any attempt to go back, he was pretty sure he would be dead before he had the chance to do anything about it. Sophia had either been kind or careless enough not to kill him once. It was best not to push that kind of luck. However, his journey had not been easy or pleasant. Only a few days out of Zedrin, a storm blew the tiny boat he had stolen off its course. Lost, he sailed on, crewing his boat alone, with the exception of his phoenix, who was not much good at sea. It was everything he could do to keep his vessel away from that other continent, Esiria. He had never been there himself, nor had he met anyone from there, or known anyone to venture there and return. It was even doubtful among some if there was still anything there at all anymore. But finally, his boat torn asunder by the wind and rain, he found what he needed: land. Unfortunately, he had not reached the mainland. It was the island which no one inhabited, the island which contained the Ruins Of Storms. A torrential rainstorm poured down upon the island, day in and day out, the sky so dark at all times that he quickly lost count of how many days had passed. Luckily there was life there: Several varieties of plantlife flourished in the water-heavy environment and there was the occasional animal as well, and fish could be found not far off shore. But this wouldn't last him forever. He needed to get out, and back to civilization. But how? With the sky blotted out and the time of day obscured, he didn't know which way to go. What if he wandered into the mysterious Esiria, which may or may not be accesible even if he could make the journey. Or what if he simply ran into an endless expanse of ocean? Or ran straight back into Angkar, where the new ruler probably wouldn't be as welcoming as he'd like? None of this was important anyway. He had no boat, and Khanrad could only carry him as long as he could stay awake. And even immortal firebirds need to rest. The time continued to pass as the former king wandered the island, the forests and ruins of which seemed to have become his home for a little while. A home which was beginning to wear on his mind, as he spent his days only with Khanrad and that sword, Badimo. He felt like it was staring at him, or talking, sometimes, but he could never confirm it, and had begun to be plagued by nightmares. Nightmares about Kenna, Elina, Sophia, Orion, and Angkar... All his money was of no use to him now, and his strength could keep him alive here, but could provide no means of escape. But finally, one day, while he was out trawling the waters for fish, the rain seemed to let up a bit... Just a little, mind you. Nighttime. A full moon, even, that just barely managed to illuminate the earth and bathe the sheet of cloud cover in a silver light. Exhausted, Razarod drug his catch back to the shores before stopping suddenly. A noise. Another feral beast? Perhaps a demon? Or maybe... No, no way it could be another person. Spinning around, he drew Badimo from its sheath at his waist. "Who's there?!" |

She'd been on this island for awhile now. Though it was often wet and made her fur tatty and smell funny, she liked the peacefulness of this place. It had plenty of forest life and well, she seemed to be pretty alone. She spent most of her time as a wolf, only being a human when she had to go off the island to get supplies. One day, she was out for a casual stroll, her tail held high as she sniffed the air to see what was around. She could smell some sort of bird to her left and... and a human? Well that's odd. She wasn't aware that anyone inhabited this island. Crouching lower to the ground, she followed her nose to where the mystery person was. As she snuck closer, she was shocked to see... well, him here. Facing her direction was none other than Razarod, King of Angkar. She couldn't believe her eyes. She'd spent a lot of her time finding out about the different authorities of this world, but never did she think she'd meet one of them. Thinking that she might never get another chance, Makira walked into view. She let out a low growl as the fur on her back stood up. Large teeth bared, she let out a warning growl telling him to leave. |

Razarod spun around to see a big gray wolf staring him down, golden eyes locked on his own. He could tell from its behavior that is was not an ordinary feral beast, but a sentient one, possibly some sort of werewolf or demon. And therefore, it was possible that he could reason with it. Stepping towards Makira, he gripped Badimo tightly in his left hand, wielding the bizarre flesh and bone blade menacingly. "Demon, you are not the first of your kind I have met here and you will not be the last. Neither of us can get off the island, but I daresay it's big enough for the two of us. You don't have to die today if you don't want to." It was true, he had met many horrible creatures during his time here, and been forced to slay most of them. It wasn't something he enjoyed doing, even now, simply something he had had to do. Which is why he tried to avoid it, especially since he didn't want to turn himself into a target for all the angry spirits on the island, a group with severely outnumbered him. Against one or two he could handle himself easily, but against a much larger group... He would find himself quickly overwhelmed. Ceasing his steps, the former king sheathed the sword once again to show he meant no harm. The gesture was more symbolic than anything, as he still possessed enough magic to keep the wolf at bay at ease if it chose to attack, possibly even enough to dispatch it without need of a weapon. But it showed that he was willing to drop his guard, at least in part. It showed a lack of aggression. And that would hopefully be enough to dispel the tension between them. |

Makira, teeth bared and back hunched, was very surprised when Razarod sheathed his sword. She cocked her head to the side and pondered the gesture. Makira knew she could never trust a King, or anyone high up in the power ranks for that matter, but if he was willing to talk then she would hear him out. Slowly, she relaxed her body and shifted to human form. She gave a slight nod, recognising his gesture, but she refused to get any closer to him until she knew exactly what he was doing here. Though she wanted to question him, she became sidetracked. "Demon? I'm no demon. If I were a demon I imagine I'd have some cool horns or something. Maybe even a tail. I haven't actually met any demons yet, or at least none that I know of. I think they would be sca…" she snapped her head back to look at Razarod, suddenly remembering his company. "I'm not afraid of you. You may look tough, but everyone has their weaknesses. I bet yours is some female. All lot of men have that problem… Onto a more pressing matter though, what the hell are you doing here of all places? Don't you have, I don't know… a kingdom to run?" She scrunched her nose as she sniffed the air. She thought she smelled something odd in the air, but she said nothing. If anything, it could be something that would like to kill him. She grinned at the thought, knowing she would probably enjoy watching… or joining in. |

Razarod watched, bewildered, as the wolf changed into a young girl. There was someone else on the island. Who wasn't some kind of monster. Well, not all the time anyway... It was quite a bit before she said anything of real substance, her rant about not being very demon-like because she didn't have horns or a cool tail not being entirely convincing to Razarod, who considered a woman who turned into a sentient wolf just another thing on the island to be wary of. "Really? I've seen them all over the place. I'd say I've seen one just about every day, but I'm not even sure how long I've been here anymore..." She went on about how his weakness was probably some woman... The massive man's head hung and eyes lowered as she pushed his thoughts back to Kenna and Elina... Where were they now? Were they safe? What were they doing? He snapped back to attention when she finally said something he could actually respond to. "A kingdom to run?! Ha! Wouldn't that be nice. But that's not going to happen anymore. Since you haven't heard the news, I thought you should know: King Razarod Evermore is dead." He stopped yelling for a bit and caught his breath. He didn't need to go off on her. She didn't know. "I'm sorry... It's a touchy subject. I've lost everything. Everything! My family has been taken from me. Angkar has been taken from me. I have nothing left. Nothing. Sometimes I don't know why I don't just-" What he thought he should perhaps just do, however, he never got to say. He too could sense something watching them from the dark. His hand darted to his sword again, resting on the hilt as he stared into the void from whence he had felt the disturbance, and thought he even heard a sound... But nothing came. He could have continued his sentence, but he didn't have the courage to. For he had been ready to say that he sometimes wondered why he didn't just give up and die. He'd lost the country he had spent most of his adult life building and growing. Kenna, the woman he had believed to be the love of his life, had left him. And she had taken Elina. His daughter. His only child. He might never see her again? What exactly did he have to live for? |

She would have laughed if it wasn't for the harshness in his tone. She almost felt sorry for him, then remembered who it was she was talking to. Makira watched him, and saw something in his eyes she could only describe as a mixture of loss and defeat. She hated herself for what she was going to do, but he did seem like he needed help, and she knew she would hate herself more if she just left him like this. She took a cautious step towards him, ready to shift again if need be. He did not seem like he was going to attack her, so slowly she walked all the way up to him. She raised a wary hand up and put her hand on his shoulder, hoping she was not overstepping any boundaries. "Razarod, I think I know what you were going to say, and there is nothing in this world that could be worth loosing your own life. I have been on this island for awhile now, but if you are supposedly dead and no longer king, I can only presume by your sadness that it was not your choice to be this way. The mere fact that you are alive and walking today is a grand thing, and you should treasure it." She dropped her hand again and turned to face the opposite direction. "You know, I still don't really like you, but I really do hate seeing people in pain." She quickly whip around to face him again. "Maybe I can help. Tell me what you need, and I'll see what I can do." |

He sat down on a nearby rock as she made her way over to him. She didn't seem like she was going to attack him. And she didn't. Instead, she just slowly made her way up to him and gentle placed a hand on his shoulder, while he simply sat there, the downpour washing over his body and matting his hair to his face, as his head hung low. He didn't answer her at first. He knew she was right. He knew he should be glad that he was alive. That he still had a chance to walk the earth, to make himself a new life in the world. But it was so hard. It was too hard to actually look at it that way. Not when he had lost everything that was most important to him. Kenna, Elina, Yorishine, and all the people of Angkar now... All left without him. And he without them. What was going to happen? How was he supposed to go on? What was he supposed to do with himself? But finally he answered that sentiment with one simple, empty statement: "... I know." He felt her hand slowly slip away as she turned around. At least they hadn't had to harm each other. But then... she stopped. And she turned around... Was she... offering to help him? But... what could she do? Then again, she seemed to be at home here, but she couldn't possibly be a native... maybe...? "All I want is to get off of this island. After I got shipwrecked here, I haven't been able to find a way out... I can live off the land, but no one could live off this land for much longer than I already have. Not that I know how long that is. I don't know how long I've been here. I don't know how much time has passed. If it's been days... Or weeks... I just want to get off of here and go back to civilization. I know it's risky there, but it's risky here too. I'll take my chances on the mainland. At least there I know where I am, and what day it is." He stopped talking suddenly, his breathing heavy, before he broke down sobbing, indicated only by his body language and the sounds emitting from his mouth, the rain concealing all his tears. "Why did this happen to me? I loved my family, and only wanted to help my people... What did I do to bring this on myself? Why?!" |

She hated it when people cried. She hated it with a passion. Even worse, it was a man and a king at that! She couldn't actually see him crying, but she had been around people enough to tell when they really were upset. She felt a sharp pain in her cheats when he mentioned his family. She knew what it was like to loose her family, and it was one thing she could really relate to. Collapsing on a nearby rock, she put her elbow on her knee and rested her head on her hand. "Trust me when I say I know what it's like to loose family. And you're going to hate me for saying it, but your situation could be a lot worse. I bet you know your family, right? You know what they look like, you know what the sound, smell and feel like? Well thank your lucky stars you do. I have no family, and probably never will." Suddenly feeling angry with the world, she shot up and faced him. "Well come on then. You want to get of this island or whatever this place is? Well I just the thing you need." She started walking away from the man, sure that he would follow. She made her mind up that if she turned to find him gone, she would take the boat herself and find someone to tell of his whereabouts. She marched on, not caring for the rain, and eventually came to a cluster of short, thick-leaved trees. She'd crafted the boat hidden here from a fallen tree not long after she arrived here, but so far she had been content to just live on this island. As she pulled away some of the foliage, she started to feel a longing to leave here too. She had been fine living here for some time, but now that she knew there was some weird things apparently going on in the outside world, she longed to know more. Still unsure if he's even followed her, she spoke to no one in particular "Well, this is it. A one way ticket out of here." |

His head snapped to stare at the young girl. On one hand, he felt bad for her. He really did. On the other, in his current state, he didn't believe she could ever really understand how he was feeling. How abandoned he now felt by everyone. "But in a few years, will I? My daughter it going to grow up without me. What if by the time I see her again, I don't even recognize her? Or what if..." He could not bring himself to say it. To suggest the possibility out loud that he may never see Elina again. As likely as it was appearing right now. But enough of that. And berating Makira wasn't going to help anything. "I'm sorry... Yes, I do want to get out of here. And if you can help me, I'll be i your debt... Lead the way." Quickly he followed behind her, holding one arm up to keep the rain out of his eyes to make sure he didn't lose her. His mind jumped all over the map with anticipation: He was going to get off of this island. Back onto the mainland, back to civilization, out of this hell. But there was also fear: Would civilization just be one more hell? Where would he go? What would he do? It was then that he made up his mind: Soto. He must go to Soto. But he must go the long way around, through Morrim, in case anyone is trying to follow him. Reine and the main roads he would expect people on. If he followed the river through the wilderness, he would be able to spot anyone tailing him much better. But he had to get there first. And there it was. The boat that could take him back to a new life, for better or for worse. But at least it was a life. "Let's go." |

She stared at the boat. She didn't know why she paused, she should be happy to leave this place. For some reason, she had stayed here on this island for so long with no real reason to, but she could never bring herself to leave. It was peaceful here, and she could forget everything. She stared at the boat, weighing her choices. "Fine, let's drag this to the edge of the island." Not waiting for Razarod, she grabbed the rope attached to the front of the boat and started dragging it to the shoreline. It wasn't too long before she could sea the dark water at the edge of the island. Luckily the water didn't appear to be to angry today, so it seemed as if they were in luck. She carefully pushed the boat in, and watched it float for a few seconds before jumping in. The boat rocked a little, but didn't tip or sink, which made it fine in her books. Grabbing one of the paddles she'd hidden under the seat, she threw it at Razarod while grabbing the other. "Well come on then, this thing won't steer itself." |

Razarod's strong hands wrapped their thick, powerful fingers around the boat and helped the girl in hauling it to the edge of the shore with relative ease. The boat hit the choppy waters, the seafoam rising around the edges but never quite spilling in. At least not much of it, anyway. As Makira hopped into the boat, so did the former monarch, from the other side, ensuring he landed in the center as not to tip the boat. It did not tip over, or capsize, but actually held its position quite well. It looked like there was a good hope of finally leaving this place after all! The moment was here! Following the young girl's orders, Razarod grabbed an oar and began matching her, stroke for stroke. The waters weren't too dangerous today, and leaving the island was actually possible. Khanrad perched himself on Razarod's shoulder, looking out over the sea, his sharp eyes taking in the vast horizon before him. He, too, was glad to finally be leaving an area of constant torrential downpour. The constant rain wasn't dangerous to him, but it did make it much more difficult to fly, as well as making it nearly impossible to use his fire-related abilities. Razarod turned to Makira as the two of them rowed their way away from the island, aiming towards the shores of Morrim. It suddenly occurred to him that he didn't even know what to do when he got there. What could he do? He was dead. So to speak. Revealing himself to the wrong people was not safe at all... Perhaps Soto was where he should go. To Sphynx. Yes, that was the best idea. Until he got there, though, he would have to make the best of his situation now. "You know, Makira... There's something bugging me... How, and why, did you come here in the first place?" |

She sat there enjoying the silence, each stroke of the oar requiring less thought and concentration then the last. Gradually, they had been at it for so long, that she could neither see where they came from, or where they were going. She remembered when she was going to the island, and could recall the very moment she first saw the island from the little boat she was in. She thought it was magnificent, a salvation, but she knew it that she was doing the right thing by leaving and going back to reality. Razarod broke the silence, snapping her out of her thoughts. "Well the how is easy. I found a man with a boat and asked him if he knew of anywhere where I'd have less of a chance of coming into contact with people. He said he knew a place and it was on his way to where he was going, so he took me to that place. The why is..." She paused, thinking of the best way to put it. "...Slightly more difficult. You see, I've never been good with... people. I spend most of my time as a wolf, and have grown accustomed to their ways. I love being a wolf, and love it more than being a human." She paused again, wondering whether she should tell him or not. Turning to look at him, she took in a deep breath and continued. "Razarod, I was being hunted. No matter where I went, I always felt like someone was following me. Actually wait, I know someone was following me. Sometimes I would change into a human for awhile then back to a wolf, but whoever or whatever was following me never missed a beat. I came here because if they were tracking me by scent, they could not follow me across water, and if they were tracking me from the sky, it would be too hard to get through the storms." She stopped rowing and turned her whole body to face him. "Razarod, I'm scared. I don't know who or what is trying to get me, but I know that they probably will. They seem to always be right behind me no matter what I do" She looked up at the sky and sagged her shoulders in defeat. Turning back around, she continued to row. "Now enough of the depressing talk. Let's just focus on getting back home." |
