Silence. Nothing could be heard in the dense trees, save for the occasional rustling of branches. If one listened closely, one could hear soft footfalls, and the breaking of twigs. Yet even with these sounds, not much in the forest was touched or changed. At least, nothing since that night. Evalee could feel the tension in the trees, the silence of the animals a clear indication that, even now, even with how long it had been, everyone was still on guard after the event that transpired. Her green eyes scanned the surrounding foliage, looking for any sign of normal life. Every bird, every squirrel, every rabbit, mole, and deer. They were all missing from their normal habitats. The girl felt a strange absence. Part of the forest was missing, hiding away underground and in trees, or masked between bushes and brush. And yet even with her enhanced senses she couldn't sense anything. Anyone. Her mind met an unwelcoming silence as she tried to reach out and touch those of the animals. It is said that they can feel when something isn't right, when there's death, and judging not only from the lack of fauna but also from the smell of it, something had gone on. She could almost taste the copper in the air, could feel the cold sting of death against her skin. Walking around a large tree, Evalee scanned the area, hoping to maybe see some sign of an animal, be it a feather, or track. Hell, even feces at this point would have made her feel better. But nothing littered the ground. A sigh escaped her lips and she closed her eyes, turning and sitting on a rock. Her hands raised to her head and she put her elbows to her knees, cradling her head as if hurt. If only she were hurt, for a headache was far better than the silence she heard almost echoing throughout her body. Her arms dropped to her side and she put them on the rock, immediately recoiling her hand as her fingers touched what was far different from the texture of a rock. Lifting her pale hand up, Evalee's green eyes moved slowly to look at her hand. She could feel something on it, though upon closer examination, nothing was there. Her eyes left her hand and focused on the ground beside the stone she sat on. The crimson color was the first thing to catch her eye, a long trail of it that seemed to stretch forever. The shifter stood and turned, her eyes following the trail to its origin. What she saw astonished her. The crimson trail lead from the rock to a slumped body set against a tree, its head lolled over and barely attached to its body. Its arm had been removed from its body and now lay at its side, the hand in now an odd position as if broken. She slowly moved closer, her eye twitching as the soil beneath her shrank down more like mud than normal soil. As she moved around the body she gasped and jumped back when she saw the lack of flesh on the man's face. The red of the muscles stood out against the white bones, the jaw open in what seemed to be a scream. She moved further backward and away from the horror before running into something at her back. She turned and almost let out a scream, the blood draining from her face at the scene before her. Hanging from a sword was a leg, hanging almost perfectly balanced between the two trees with the foot outstretched and toes pointed outwards. The foot was facing her, and as she backed up, Evalee caught something out of the corner of her eye. Regretfully she turned her head. Slowly. Her eyes lifted and took in the sight of the legless body, her feet almost slipping out from under her as her body moved before them and out of the way, bile rising in her throat as her eyes traveled to the empty abdomen and the intestines that now hung the corpse. She turned her head and found herself scanning the ground, grimacing at the loose bits and pieces of body parts, skin, and muscle strewn across the ground. "Who would do something like this...?" |

"Hell of a way to find the body. You should probably look where you're sticking your hands from now on." Another girl made her way into the clearing, one almost the same age as Evalee, just a year or two younger if at all. She stood several inches taller though, just shy of six feet. Her build was curvy in places, but also quite muscular, and it was clear that she was accustomed to a lot of athletic activity, although exactly what kind of activity was anyone's guess. Her long locks of raven hair were tied back into a simply ponytail, and she was clad in very simple attire: Tan slacks, and a white top, the sleeves cut off for ventilation and mobility, not by seamstress but by knife. Speaking of knives, she wore two rather large ones on her belt. Gingerly, she took several steps forward into the clearing and looked around. "You tell me. That's exactly what I'm here to find out." She had decided that it was better to investigate these sorts of things unmasked during the day, after that angel had interrupted her the first time, assuming she was some sort of murderer. Which, she had to admit, wasn't entirely inaccurate... But she was not the kind who would do this, and not the kind of person everyone was looking for. Besides, there were still ways to protect her identity: A fake name, forgettable attire, fabricated details and history, convincing but not too detailed as to give herself away with mistakes... And this was Soto, not Ashoka. Her true identity was not wanted here. "You should probably be going now... You don't look like you've got the stomach for this kind of work. Unless I'm mistaken, and you were looking for them after all. In which case you found them." A smirk spread across her lips, almost mocking. "But, if this was a total surprise to you, then... It's no surprise to the authorities, and you can run along home." |

Standing in the middle of the gory clearing, Evalee could understand why there were no animals to be found. Even now, she could smell the putrid odor radiating from the pieces on the ground and the decaying flesh on the bodies that had been posed around her. As the scent filled her nose it clouded the rest of her senses; her eyes focused on the deep red of the blood staining the surfaces that surrounded her, her ears were filled with the ever present silence that haunted her mind, the air tasted of spoiled meat and making her gag. She was so absorbed in the scene that she couldn't focus on anything but. The approaching being that moved through the forest around her slipped her senses, and Evalee almost jumped when she heard the voice that broke her thoughts. Though the words that came out were far from welcome. Eyebrows pulled together in slight irritation, the average woman turned to face the new figure in the clearing. It was another woman, taller than herself, and darker, her skin carrying a tan glow to it much unlike Evalee's fair features. The animagus' hand flexed slightly and moved toward the belt around her waist, where her dagger sat in its holder. Instead of concealing it as she normally would in her boot, she had it attached to her waist, having chosen no boots that day and tight pants that would have done nothing to hide her weapon. The loose shirt on her upper body blew slightly in the breeze that picked up between the trees. Her green eyes traveled down the body of the woman before her as her temper got the best of her. "I'm sorry that I don't pay attention to where I place my hand every second of the day." Her voice was all but pleasant, and the irritated tone stood out. As the woman started walking toward her, Evalee's eyes shifted to watch her and only her, trying to deduce whether she could trust this new person before her. Her movements seemed to be that of confidence. "If I knew, don't you think I wouldn't have asked that question in the first place?" Evalee's temper was getting the better of her, the situation she was in making her uncomfortable and in turn making her brusque. Her eyebrows relaxed when she heard mention of the authorities. She took a moment as her mind sorted through the images that had forever been burned into it, and realization hit. "So this was murder." Her voice was low, almost a whisper, as she turned around and looked at the scene behind her again. Her eyes scanned each body and its position, as if subconsciously searching for clues somewhere. It was then that she remembered the eerie silence that had welcomed her to that part of the forest, and she turned to look at the new woman. "I don't think so. I can't leave the forest the way it is. If you hadn't noticed, something shook this forest deep in its core. Close your eyes for a moment and just listen. Try and focus on what you hear around you." She paused for a moment as she felt her voice wanting to crack. She swallowed her next words before she tried again. "I dare you to hear anything in this forest. Even the crickets are absent from the dense foliage. Now go ahead and tell me that's normal." |

Ignoring the redhead's angry reply, Nomad nimbly made her way around the scene, eyes and ears taking everything about the area in, not bothering to answer her until she got to the point. "Yes, it was murder. I'm surprised you haven't heard about it yet. There's been a man running around Soto for a while now, he's on some kind of spree... These are his first victims. There have been two more scenes like this, both near Madrid. Each one more disturbing than the last." She wandered around a bit more, looking for any disturbances. "This is actually a strange scene for him. Judging from the other scenes, he clearly prefers girls. Especially very young ones..." Nomad turned toward the young woman, much paler than her, once again. "I've noticed the forest is unusually quiet. It's my job to." That last part wasn't true, but if she wanted to hide her identity, a few lies were going to be necessary. "I belong to the Swooping Falcon Hunter's Guild. I noticed the silence a long time ago, and I know it's not normal. The Council hired me to apply my tracking skills to trying to find the killer." Well, at least that last part wasn't wrong. Mostly. Sphynx had hired her. The fact that Sphynx had no idea who Asrar was, and would probably deny any association with Nomad, wasn't really that big of a deal, right? "So you think you're going to help find him? What exactly can you do to accomplish that? Because when there's a murderer on the loose, a nudge in the right direction is always nice..." |

Green eyes followed Nomad as she moved around the scene, blinking in almost shock at the mention of more than one murder. So there were other places as barren as this out there? Other places where the animals and creatures seemed to have just disappeared. Her head turned as she took in the scene again, still listening to the woman before her. She seemed to know a lot about what was going on. The fact that they were centered around Madrid was reason enough that she didn't know about it. "If you're wondering why I haven't heard about them, it would be because I haven't been around this part of the country until recently. If they center around Madrid, then who's to say word gets out everywhere? Besides, I tend to stay away from large cities." She said the words more to herself than to the woman wandering the scene. The animagus looked up at the woman as she spoke about being in a hunter's guild. Eyes narrowed slightly, knowing that a lot of times hunters went for birds for their feathers, and sometimes would forgo using the meat of an animal just to get something they believed to be a high price, like the fur of certain cats. Her anger bubbled again and she couldn't stop her next remark. "What do hunters care of silence? Because it makes it harder to find their prey? I'm talking about the natural sounds in any forest, of carefree animals enjoying their life like was meant to happen. The birds in the trees speaking to each other in joyous tones. The squirrels running through the underbrush and burying their nuts for the winter. You're missing the whole point with the silence. You just can't understand how devastating it is to the forest." Evalee blinked back her fears and turned her eyes downward slightly before hearing her again. When had she said she wanted to help find the one that caused such a disturbance? When had she offered to lend her abilities to find a murderer, who can come after her, especially after what the woman had said earlier about preferring girls. And yet, it seemed that no one could figure out what this murderer was up to. They couldn't find him. Without being told this, she could tell. The way the woman was acting and walking around the scene made Evalee believe that they just didn't have any ideas about the murderer. Her eyes turned down as she thought about how she could possibly be of help. This woman before her seemed to be asking for help without outright saying it. "I can find them." Was all she said for a moment, looking up and through the trees around her. "It wouldn't be too hard. I can find someone, something to ask about what happened. I'm sure someone would tell me." She didn't explain, instead turning and looking at the woman beside her. "But first, you need to tell me what you know about the murders. Information for information. I won't go snooping anywhere else, but I want to know what I'm getting myself into before I jump right into things." |

Nomad ignored Evalee's rant about hunters, for the most part. She didn't really have much of an answer, as she wasn't really a hunter. At least, not the way Evalee thought she was. She was a hunter of people, and a tracker of marks and targets, not animals. Unless someone really needed to find a particular animal. She could do it, and for the right fee, would. But it never really happened. But she had to play the part, right? "You might not like it, but it's true. I depend on the state of the forest to make a living. And despite what you might think of us, any serious hunter knows not to over-hunt the area. Everything being dead is terrible for business. And for everything else. I might not feel the same way you do about the silence, but I see it as devastating all the same." But it was becoming clear she wasn't going to get a lot out of her visit here. That was nothing visible here that she couldn't have already figured out from the more recent scene she had already visited. If anything, there was less to offer here, nature having had its way with the area for far more time, leaving the evidence left behind an absolute mess, destroyed, or shuffled off to another location entirely. She didn't even know if the other woman could be much help. She'd told her to get out if she wasn't going to help, and she hadn't left yet, but... what could she see that she couldn't? Anything? Doubtful. But maybe she was about to get an answer. She could get someone to tell her? Who? She was sure she'd heard about all the witnesses... All two of them. Nomad stared at her incredulously, asking "How? Only two people saw anything. How do you plan on finding just anybody to to tell you?" To be honest, it was worth a try though. She'd tried other things, even scrying, and nothing had worked out enough to provide her anything more than a few vague details. "Fine. What I know... The killer's a man. This was his first kill, we believe. The next two were both girls. Very young girls, practically children. There were barely any witnesses at all, in fact, only one has been tracked down. He's surprisingly good about not leaving evidence behind, especially since I believe he has a certain fetish or ritual involving laying around in the victim's blood for an extended period of time, maybe even cuddling with them... Needless to say, you don't want to leave this guy running around your forest. Or in town. Or anywhere, really." |

The words the woman spoke about the silence in the forest made her scoff. She didn't understand as well as Evalee did just how bad the silence really was. But she didn't press the matter further. It would only lead to anger. Her eyes scanned the trees, searching for any signs of life she could. Just because it was silent didn't mean there wasn't any animal around. They were all hiding, perhaps worried something like that would happen again. It would take some work, but she'd find them. Maybe she could convince them to lighten the forest with their voices again. Her thoughts were interrupted by her question and she turned to look at Nomad. A small grin appeared on her lips as the woman questioned her talents. Granted she didn't know about them, but it was funny all the same. "There weren't just two witnesses." She murmured before Nomad began telling her about the murders. As the woman spoke, Evalee made her way about the scene, noting where it was possible the murderer had laid beside his victims, as Nomad said they believed he did. She scanned the ground for something, anything, telling her where all the animals had gone and it didn't take her long to see the small, almost unnoticeable pile of droppings at the base of a large tree. She knelt down to examine them closer, ignoring the fact that Nomad had stopped talking. The droppings were fresh, which meant there was an animal, if not more, just watching and listening. Or ignoring them completely and pretending to not be there. She had to find out just what kept them quiet for this long. She stood and turned back to the woman. "So basically you know nothing?" She surmised, not even trying to butter it up. Her hand nodded for a moment before she looked up at the tree, finding a small alcove in the trunk just higher than her head. As she looked around for something to prop herself up with, she spoke again. "What you said about there being two witnesses is wrong. There were, in fact, many more, though not many know how to contact them. Fortunately..." She put her foot on one of the roots that stuck out of the ground much further than the rest. "Ah." She stood on it and was then eye level with the hole. "Fortunately, you came across someone who is able to communicate with them." Her eyes swept through the hole and there she found huddled in a corner two squirrels, both very quietly munching on a nut. How they were being so quiet, she didn't know. But she would find out. Evalee hopped off the root and turned to look at Nomad. "So do you wish for my help? Or would you rather I leave you to it?" |

Her look became immensely puzzled at the utterance by the redhead. "What are you talking about? More than two witnesses? What do you know?!" She did not get an answer though, as the other woman turned and began looking around, as if she were searching for something, or perhaps someone. Was there really a witness this close by still? No, that was crazy. A small explanation came next, but all it did was raise more questions. "How many more witnesses can there possibly be? Wouldn't we have known about them already? Unless..." It occurred to her at almost the same moment that Evalee found them: there were two squirrels huddled inside a tiny hole in the tree, being as quiet as was humanly, or otherwise, possible. Of course Nomad wouldn't have thought they were particularly important. But this woman clearly had a special connection to this place. Maybe she could communicate with them? Ah, she could! This was perfect! "I hate to admit it, but all the work I've done so far hasn't turned up much that I hadn't already guessed on my own. I need all the help I can get. So yes, I want your help. Anything that you can do, anything you can tell me, anything you can get the animals to tell me, I need it. If I could do it without help, well... I guess I would have done it by now." She smiled a bit, although it was a rather sad and sheepish one. She hated asking for help with anything. But it had to be done if she going to find this man. |

The lips on Evalee's face turned up in a grin as the other woman admitted her need for help. Even just talking to her for the few minutes she had, it was very apparent that this woman before her was an independent soul, and did not take help from others so easily. And in a case such as this one, what choice did she really have? Having gotten no answers from this scene in the first place, what other harm could Evalee really do? "Good. I'm glad you've decided to enlist my help. Now. While I'm talking to these two, I suggest you try not to get into the middle of it. It will only frighten them more and they will be less likely to speak to me. You can go find a stump or something to sit on." When she had spoke of the witnesses that Nomad failed to acknowledge, she wasn't just making something up so she wouldn't have to leave. No. The animals around them could be as much help, if not more, as another human would be. They did, after all, have keener senses and tended to pay attention to all that went on around them. The one thing that surprised her, however, was the lack of predators that had come around the scene. Surely they would have come for the free food that lay before them. It occurred to her seconds later that most of the scavengers that lived in the forest preferred a fresher meal, and if what Nomad had said was anything to go by, this had been here for quite some time. Her green eyes fell to the ground and the gore by her feet as she started to turn around and sure enough, just to her left was the arm that had once been attached to the hand that now sat atop the stump. It looked as if it had been chewed, small chunks of the skin and muscle torn off and thrown to the side. The bone itself had marks on it, scratches that were only visible if one paid attention as Evalee was now. She was beginning to see signs of animal life more and more as she searched for it. With her head clearer than it had been in the last few minutes, Evalee was able to pick up more, and with that hoped that she could get more information out of the two small rodents in the tree. With a sure foot and silent steps she moved back over to the tree, putting her foot on the tall root she had found before. Hoisting herself up she put her hand on a large branch protruding from the trunk to her right, giving her the extra leverage and balance to stand so easily on one foot on the root. Her head raised and was the level with the hole in the tree, her eyes searching once more for the two squirrels she so desired to speak with. With a soft voice, she cleared her throat before speaking. "Hello." To Nomad, it would sound just like normal speaking, but to the squirrels they would hear an entirely different language. The two squirrels, one a dark red in color and the other a gray, jumped as they heard her speaking. After scrambling for a moment in disarray they stopped and looked at one another before glancing back at the woman before them. The red squirrel, seemingly the braver of the two, stepped forward slightly, down on all fours with his tail up in the air. He leaned forward on three paws, the other one lifted off of the ground slightly as he took in a scent. In a deep but slightly gruff voice it spoke to her. "Of human form you may appear, but human tongue we do not hear." Its beady eyes watched her, moving across her features to the bright red of her hair before looking back at her face once more. "You speak our tongue with no distress, but how or why I could not guess." Evalee was slightly thrown aback by the way the squirrel spoke to her. Rhymes? It seemed so different from the other animals she had spoken to previously, but then she had never tried speaking to a squirrel. Already she knew she wouldn't be able to answer in the same manner they spoke, so she just spoke politely and in the best way she could. "Yes, I am human. But I am also a shifter of sorts. I can take on the form of a..." She stopped quickly. It would be unwise of her to divulge what exactly she took the form of, as it would most definitely frighten the poor beasts. "The form of an animal. That in turn gives me the ability to communicate with all creatures, including you." The red squirrel seemed to relax slightly, sitting up and flicking its tail slightly. The gray squirrel behind him slowly scampered forward and sat beside its mate. It tilted its head slightly at her. "The wood is full of creatures rare, so why choose our unlikely pair? What is it that you wish to learn, so to our nuts we can return?" More rhymes? Evalee blinked at them for a moment before her brain reminded her of why she did need to speak with them. "Well, I was wondering what happened here a while ago. Why the forest is so quiet and why there is so much carnage befouling such a beautiful place as this?" She shifted her weight slightly, setting her other foot up on the root so as to make it easier. She didn't know exactly how long she would be standing there, after all. The two squirrels looked at each other before looking back at the girl. "We know the answers you do seek, but rather would not dare to speak." It was the gray one that spoke, its voice softer than the male beside her, who spoke next. "A horror we did witness here when insanity came very near." "Oh please, couldn't you help me? I'm... We're.... trying to figure out what happened and who did it, and you two are the only two I could find that would know anything." She said as she turned and looked at Nomad behind her. The two squirrels moved forward and peeked their faces out of the whole to look at Nomad before moving back a little. Evalee turned to face them again. The squirrels once again looked at each other, seeming to ponder together for a moment before turning back to the human. The red one spoke. "Your questions just might have an end, as answers we agreed to lend." Evalee's face brightened at his words. They would help her out. Give her possible answers to the questions that Nomad seemed to want answers for. Before she could say anything, the gray squirrel spoke. "A man of half blood he may be, his eye like that of fire. With raven hair and pointed ear looks the man you do desire." Evalee blinked for a moment, trying to decipher how it was exactly this man looked. But another question rose to the front of her mind. "But what happened here? This wasn't a normal murder. There are bits of people everywhere." After a bit of contemplating between each other, the red squirrel spoke. "A playful game they did endure, though for what purpose we are unsure." The gray squirrel moved forward and looked out at the slaughter before them. She seemed to search the scene before she spoke. "Another game the man did play, and for his own delight. For torn off flesh and broken bone did arouse and excite." Brows furrowed together slightly as she shuffled through their words. "Wait, a game? That's why they were set up this way, so he could play with them? And what was that about 'torn off flesh'?" The gray squirrel turned and looked back at her, taking her eyes away from the horror before them. "What sits before and covers all is not what is norm to see. Just take it off and put it down to have new identity." The red squirrel moved up to its mate and looked up at Evalee, seemingly no longer afraid of her or of what she could do to them. "Tis just one game that he did play, throughout the night and to next day." The shifter's eyes turned downward slightly as she turned her head and looked out at the scene before her. All of the carnage was still sickening to her. And after hearing some of the things the squirrels said to her, granted she'd have to decipher some of it, it made it even worse. Without meaning to speak to anyone in general, Evalee let out the question she had been wanting to find an answer for. "Why would anyone want to kill someone?" After a moments hesitation, the gray squirrel moved over to Evalee and placed a paw lightly on her head. "One cannot really truly die when madness will not let it lie." Evalee turned and looked at the squirrel for a moment. "And murder is truly madness. Thank you so much for what you've told me. It really has been a great help." Without waiting to hear what they said back, she turned and hopped off of the root she stood on. With a breath she walked over to Nomad and looked over at her. "So, how do you feel about riddles?" |

Nomad stood, in absolute silence, as not to disturb their conversation. Such that it was. Of course, to them, a lot was going on, but to her it was incredibly one-sided: All that she could understand was Evalee's responses to what the squirrels were telling her, but everything the squirrels said came out as a bunch of animal chatter, the same as it did when Evalee wasn't around. The three of them rambled on for what seemed like forever, the snippets of Evalee's speech that Nomad was able to pick up not making the least bit of sense heard solely on their own. Finally they finished speaking and the squirrels retreated back into their hole, and Evalee returned to Nomad's company. Asking how she felt about riddles. "Riddles?! So they couldn't just tell us, they had to make it into a game?!" She sighed a bit. "Figures. Those animals did always look mischievous. I guess if that's how they want to do it though, I don't have much of a choice, do I?" Why not? It couldn't be any harder than the one she was trying to solve right now. And she was normally pretty good at that kind of thing. All she had to do was solve a riddle concocted by two tiny little squirrel brains and she was that much further on her way to finding the killer and bringing him in. She sat down on a stump behind her, and looked back up at Evalee. "Looks like I might be here a while... Let's hear it." |

As the shifter carefully stepped around the bits and pieces of carnage on the ground before her, Evalee cycled through what the squirrels had told her. She had to remember exactly what it was they said, word for word, so she wouldn't miss anything that might be important or helpful. Reaching a fallen tree just in front of where Nomad had taken her seat on the stump, she stepped over it before sitting, putting an elbow on her knee and her chin in her hand. It would be impossible to write it down -- Evalee not only didn't have anything to write on but had never been put through schooling of any kind. But though she couldn't write, she could draw the clues and their answers. "They said something about a game. About a game that the man played with..." Her voice trailed off as she looked around them at the bodies. "...With them. Let's see if I can remember it. Maybe it has some clue or another in that. Umm... 'What sits before and covers all is not what is norm to see.' Well that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. 'Just take it off and put it down,' So something you wear? 'To have new identity.'" From on the ground she reached out and grabbed a long stick that had seemed to snap off of the fallen tree she sat on. Almost without thinking she started drawing in the dirt. First she sketched a person, just a rough, simple drawing of a man. Absently she started speaking as she drew another figure beside the first. The new drawing looked different, though not completely. "How does one change their appearance with something they can put on and take off?" She was silent for a moment before she spoke again. "They gave me a description, too. I know that will help." The woman turned in her seat slightly to face a patch of dirt she hadn't yet drawn in. She took the stick and started drawing the face of a man. "'A man of half blood he may be...'" Taking the end of the stick, she drew a diagonal line through the man's face before lifting it up again and moving it to draw inside the face. Slowly she began to draw two circles for the eyes. "'His eyes like that of fire...'" Inside each of the circles she drew small flames to represent the fire they spoke of. "But I don't know if that means anger, or passion." Her words weren't necessarily meant for anyone in particular, but were rather just spoken thoughts. Moving the stick to the top of the face she started drawing hair. With no idea how long or short it was, she went with a rough scruffy hair around his face. "'With raven hair," She finished with the hair and moved to the ears, drawing them particularly pointy at each of the ends. "'And pointed ear,'" She finished the ears and sat back, looking down at the picture. "'Looks the man you do desire.'" |
